REBBETZIN MIRIAM DESSLER ע״ה Academy in Action // 3 MEMORIAL TRIBUTE HESHY & SIMA NEIMAN THE MENDY KLEIN COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD HENRY ZIELENIEC THE ALUMNUS AWARD Born in Lublin, Poland, Henry Zieleniec and his family arrived on these shores in 1952 when he was seven years old. His parents, survivors of the Shoah, recognized the value of a Jewish day school education, and enrolled Henry in second grade when the Academy’s Taylor Road building was a modest onestory building. Henry continued his education at Telshe Yeshiva and Case Western Reserve University. The values imbued in him from his time in the Academy and Telshe, together with his upbringing, set the stage for a lifetime of commitment and accomplishments in Jewish communal activism and philanthropy. For Henry and his wife, Atta, Yerushalayim is their home. They also reside part of the year in Toronto. Wherever he finds himself, Henry is grateful for the education and opportunities gifted to him as a student at the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. A partner of the Carlton Group in Toronto, Henry is involved in a host of communal initiatives. A former Chairman of Machon Lev/Canadian Friends of Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT) where its nursing school is named in memory of Atta’s mother, Henry is also past president of One Israel Fund; and a current board member of Im Eshkachech Yerushalayim; and founder and chair of Canadian Friends of Kiryat Chinuch Lebanim of Ashdod. With a passion for Jewish outreach and continuity, Henry is chairman of the Jewish Education Program of Toronto (JEP), under the direction of Academy alumnus, Rabbi Shlomo Noach Mandel and in the Shema Yisrael Network of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, under the chairmanship of Mr. Albert Reichmann. Henry and Atta are the proud parents of four children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rebbetzin Miriam Dessler, whose incredibly accomplished life ended this past November at the age of 100, was the matriarch of the Academy. Born in Berlin, Germany to her parents, Rev. Chanina and Malka Finger, her family emigrated to Tel Aviv in 1936 where she received her high school chinuch. In 1940, her family relocated to Cleveland and, after working at Yeshiva of Flatbush in New York, she joined American Greetings Corporation as a secretary to Mr. Irving I. Stone whom she later introduced to her husband-to-be, Rabbi Nochum Zev .זצ״ל Dessler Multitalented, personable and knowledgeable in Judaic studies and Hebrew language, Mrs. Dessler was quickly recruited as a star teacher in the fledgling Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. Her marriage to Rabbi Dessler began a lifetime partnership in marriage, in nurturing a nationally renowned Jewish day school and in building a vibrant Jewish community. Theirs was a unique marriage and partnership which spanned over 65 years. Their legendary aristocracy, royalty and mutual respect for each other earned them enormous respect across the broadest segment of the community. Dynamic, engaging and hospitable, she opened her home to people from around the world and entertained at home with grace, dignity and elegance. Rebbetzin Dessler was a remarkable role model to young and old alike. Rebbetzin Dessler’s extraordinary career in Jewish education at the Academy spanned sixty years where she taught thousands of students, across the spectrum of elementary and high school grades, and later established and directed the Academy’s early childhood division. For decades she created curricula, wrote songs, played instruments, and directed creative plays and productions which were featured at the Academy’s annual banquets. Generations of students still sing the songs she taught them, still teach them to their children, and remember her as a fabulous teacher. She also created educational and fun filled fundraisers which benefited worthy organizations in Israel, which was a passion of hers. Rebbetzin Miriam Dessler will be remembered fondly by generations of parents and students who basked in her glow. Her legacy lives on in her distinguished family, in the Academy, and in the hearts and minds of all those whose lives she touched. In the worlds of community service and involvement, Heshy and Sima Neiman have emerged as di¢erence makers. President of Global Alliance in his professional life, Heshy is also President of Chevra Kadisha / The Jewish Sacred Society; Vice President of Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery Commission; a founder of Misaskim; a volunteer for Bikur Cholim; and a member of Chaverim of Cleveland since its inception. Heshy’s energetic personality, coupled with his remarkable passion for assisting others, motivates him to stand at the forefront of community service. From birth to burial, wherever and whenever there is a need, Heshy is the primary contact. Sima, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Yossi Abraham, is a true partner in her husband’s extensive communal activism. A graduate of Hebrew Academy of Cleveland’s Beatrice Yavne High School, Sima is a busy mother and yet still finds time to volunteer at the Academy, Bikur Cholim and Rofeh Cholim Cancer Society. Heshy and Sima are past recipients of Bikur Cholim’s Young Leadership Award. They are the parents of six children, all Academy students and alumni.

6 // Academy in Action J oyous singing and dancing escorted the new Sefer Torah that was recently dedicated by Nati and Chany Klein to its home in our beautiful new Beis Medrash. Hundreds of men, women and children joined the procession, elated by the magnificent ceremony of welcoming the Sefer Torah on its way to its new home. Peklach, flags, torches and special commemorative sifrei Tehillim were distributed in honor of the occasion and a dessert reception followed in the new Immerman Gymnasium. In anticipation of the Hachnasas Sefer Torah, and in advance of the event, the Rebbeim of the Yeshiva Ketana and Junior High School, were honored to write letters in the new Sefer Torah. Their talmidim watched and learned a lesson about the mitzvah of writing a Torah from the sofer, Rabbi Yosef Heinemann. Thank you to all those who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the day. May we continue to merit siyata d’Shmaya in all our initiatives and endeavors. The Momentous Occasion Continues with a Gala Hachnasas Sefer Torah for the New Campus

Academy in Action // 7 Zeh hayom asah Hashem nagila v’nismecha vo! Amid festive music, singing and dancing, bedecked in white shirts to mark the occasion, the entire Yeshiva Ketana gathered under the morning skies to celebrate the opening of our magnificent new Makom Torah. The boys and their Rebbeim danced by class and then formed a large 350-person circle, singing a newly composed song for the occasion. The talmidim excitedly approached the building and watched as local Rabbonim and members of the school’s Vaad Hachinuch Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rav, Congregation Ahavas Yisroel and Rosh Kollel, Kollel Torah L.I.F.E; and Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, Rav, Young Israel of Greater Cleveland plus Rabbi Zev Busel, Rosh Kollel, Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev – affixed mezuzos to the front entrance doors. It was befitting that Mr. Ivan Soclof, Academy Past President and the “father” of our beautiful Oakwood Campus, affixed the final mezuzah to its door. The Academy is filled with gratitude to the Ribono Shel Olam that it has reached this milestone. Yeshiva Ketana Moving Day

8 // Academy in Action Hodu l’Hashem ki tov, ki l’olam chasdoh! With heartfelt gratitude, Early Childhood students and their parents were invited to view our new, state-of-the-art Knapp Early Childhood Center at the Academy’s Oakwood Campus. Our youngest students have spacious classrooms with views of their own special playground. There is a child-friendly lunchroom, just for them, and a large gym full of a wide array of riding toys and an indoor climbing area. There’s room to learn and room to play; and lots of room to accommodate the growing number of children that are joining the Academy. Early Childhood’s First Day in Oakwood

Academy in Action // 9 Early Childhood The weekly parsha is a launching point for a myriad of activities that our youngest students can handle with aplomb. They can arrange the animals in Noach’s ark; act out the chesed that Avrohom Avinu displayed to all his guests; understand what it means to travel by ship, camel, or walking to one’s destination. Early Childhood teachers make the parsha come alive and share the excitement with our three-year-olds. This early age can be an introductory time to tefillah; each student was given a childfriendly, laminated version of a siddur so they could say Modeh Ani and Shema at night. This Division was founded and nurtured for over two decades by Rebbetzin Miriam Dessler ע״ה .Mrs. Dessler is remembered fondly for her professionalism and warmth, her mentoring of fellow teachers and her love for all the students. Many recall Mrs. Dessler’s passion for bringing the Shabbos spirit to students through Shabbos parties, songs, music, love, and joy. A bulletin board honoring Mrs. Dessler’s involvement with the Early Childhood Division is on display in the Early Childhood wing.

This is the year students complete initial learning of the aleph beis, master the art of reading Hebrew and English letters, and receive their first Siddurim. All these vital skills help them succeed in first grade. Every week the students learn another middah tovah from the parsha and complete arts and crafts activities, such as covering hangers for guests, coloring welcome signs, and making a list of classmates’ names and phone numbers to call so they can arrange times to visit each other. Students participated in different activities during each of the days of Chanukah. They searched for oil that was hidden about the room. They played musical Hot Potato, attended a carnival, and created special arts and crafts projects. These activities are in addition to regularly scheduled specials such as music, library, and practicing social skills. Kindergarten 10 // Academy in Action

Academy in Action // 11 The first step to becoming balei midos and talmidei chachamim is learning Chumash. Therefore, first graders always exult in receiving their very first Chumash. The talmidim joyfully sang niggunim and danced with fathers and the grandfathers who were able to attend. Fifth graders finished their first blatt Gemara. Fathers and grandfathers joined the boys for a deluxe breakfast and learning session celebrating this feat. The Yeshiva Ketana’s Shemittah Initiative is a yearlong program. Two videos were shown at an introductory assembly and Rebbeim talked about the importance of nosei b’ol im chaveiro, emunah and bitachon. It was emphasized that we can all have a part in the mitzvah of shemittah by supporting this endeavor. Each class was assigned a different shevet on the map of Eretz Yisrael and given special shemittah pushkas to collect for farmers in their area. Already, at this date, fourth graders have collected over $3,500. The General Studies Department is in the midst of augmenting their Project Based and STEM technology by establishing a stateof-the-art Innovation Lab in the school. The Center contains a 3D printer, laser cutter, vinyl cutter and woodworking equipment that enables students to successfully plan and execute physical projects that are tied to curriculum standards. Yeshiva Ketana

12 // Academy in Action This year’s theme is “Emes.” Each student received a booklet of stories and lessons on the concept of truth in all areas of life. It was noted that the word, emes, is made up of an aleph which is at the beginning of the aleph-beis; a mem, which is in the exact middle; and a sof, which is the last letter of the alphabet. Thus, the concept of truth is all inclusive and a vital concept to be learned early on in life. The Eretz Chemda Program enables students to regularly video conference live with a teacher in Eretz Yisrael to learn about Shemittah and the laws specifically pertaining to the land. Tefillah is also an important component of study as students concentrate on learning the meaning of major tefillos like Shemoneh Esreh. Students watched a PowerPoint presentation of entering the King’s palace so they could visualize where they are standing as they recite this tefillah. Students are incorporating STEM projects into the general studies curriculum. They are growing plants, learning about chemical reactions, following the life stages of butterflies, and undertaking STEM engineering projects. Girls Elementary

Academy in Action // 13 Yavne has a well-earned national reputation as a place where students are taught and given the opportunity to develop their talents through multiple projects that foster creativity while reinforcing their commitment to our heritage. The G.O. theme this year is ReMARKable, focusing on the power of each person to make their mark on the world. The theme of the Adira Program is “Inspiring Change,” how focusing on developing positive midos is essential for Jewish women. Chesed is a continuous theme, and this year’s “All Star Chesed” focuses on the elevated status of those who participate. In a tribute to their school, students made many phone calls to family and friends; they raised over $16,000 for the Hebrew Academy’s “All in One Campaign.” This year teachers made a special effort to connect world history with events in Jewish history that were taking place at the same time. For instance, a timeline was created correlating the rise of the Ottoman Empire with the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. This year, Yavne also spent a lot of time aiming to create an understanding of the growth that takes place through the mitzvah of Shemittah. Students arranged a Chanukah Chinese Auction and raised $9,000 for the Keren Hashiviis. A Technology Program run by four Yavne students seeks to address the issues raised by the continuing growth of technology in the world around us. The Program’s first workshop discussed how our core values are affected by technology. Students broke into groups to discuss what personal kabbolos they will take on this year. This year Yavne joined the Cleveland Clinic Community Health and Partnerships Department to provide students with the opportunity to participate in virtual career rounds with various medical teams. Junior High School This past Succos, many talmidim took part in various Succos programs. Seventh and eighth grade talmidim regularly participate in a Night Seder program with members of our school-based Kollel. The Beis Medrash is always open for the boys, and many boys learn there with their chavrusas – members of Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev. The talmidim are privileged to hear a weekly shiur by Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rav, Ahavas Yisroel, and Rosh Kollel, Kollel Torah L.I.F.E. Major speakers this past semester included: Rabbi Chaim Kass, author, lecturer, and expert in the field of tefillin who gave a special lesson on mezuzos and tefillin; Rabbi Paysach Krohn, author of the Maggid series, who provided a fresh perspective about concentration and connection during tefillah; Rabbi Nachman Levovitz, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva Mir Yerushalayim, who encouraged talmidim to be thoughtful and positive about their learning and shmiras hamitzvos. A deluxe Chanukah mesiba for the entire Junior High included a Jeopardy game on all aspects of the halachos and minhagim of Chanukah. Talmidim shared their Chanukah enthusiasm with the younger boys by organizing a Chanukah carnival for them to enjoy. Talmidim also collected over $20,000 to help the community’s Matan B’Sayser Campaign. The General Studies Department has started a spirited Intramural League for grades 4-8. Students must meet behavioral and academic markers in order to play on the League. And, the competition is not only sports-directed; there is also an academic aspect with boys competing with their peers. 14 // Academy in Action

Academy in Action // 15 The Academy’s school-based Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev’s Night Seder with the Junior High School is a wonderful opportunity for talmidim to learn and interact with Kollel members. Yasher koach to Rabbi Chanina Dessler for coordinating a truly dynamic Night Seder program and a special thank you to the members of our Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev, for making a difference in the lives of our talmidim! Kollel members are available for the bachurim, learn with them, and host them in their homes for Oneg Shabbos on Friday evenings. They are wonderful mentors and role models for our students. Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev

16 // Academy in Action Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose visited the Academy’s Mendy and Ita Klein Campus, toured the building, visited some classes, met with administrators and board members, and addressed the students of grades 4-6. Mr. LaRose viewed the Friedman Family Legacy Wall, which visually explains the history of the school and remarked, “What a point of pride that the school is for the Jewish community of Cleveland, and how hard successive generations have worked to make that dream a reality!” Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel, proclaimed the gratefulness that the Academy and its community feels towards the benevolence of the United States government. When a student asked how Mr. LaRose became involved in government, Mr. LaRose explained that he served in the U.S. Army’s Special Forces (the Green Berets) in Iraq and there began to understand the importance of the United States election system that lets the people choose those who serve in the government. A poignant moment in the visit took place when Mr. LaRose shook hands with World War II veteran Stanley Knapp, friend of the Academy. Both men have been awarded the Bronze Star Medal. This was Mr. LaRose’s first visit to a Jewish school. He clearly appreciated the enthusiasm and commented on the positive energy in the room and the vibrancy in the school. The morning reflected both a learning experience and a true kiddush Hashem. The Ohio Secretary of State Visits the Academy
