Chadashos 12.31.21

Chadashos 12.31.21

December 31, 2021 | ‫פרשת וארא | כ''ז טבת תשפ''ב‬

‫בס‘‘ד‬

JANUARY 3-5 What motivates an individual to risk his life for people he does not know and for a religion he
does not share?
NO BEACHWOOD BUSING
The story of Raul Wallenberg has become a symbol of courage and conviction. A Swedish
•••••• humanitarian based in Hungary during World War II, Wallenberg, a non-Jew, risked (and
eventually gave up) his life for the Jewish people. He established hospitals, nurseries, safe
JANUARY 12 houses and soup kitchens in Budapest during the War. He rented buildings under the
jurisdiction of Sweden thus rendering them protected through diplomatic immunity. He draped
Early Childhood Parent Teacher Swedish flags over them thereby saving thousands of Jewish lives. Most importantly, he
Conferences 7:00-10:00 organized rescue programs and secured protective passports for thousands preventing their
deportation to Auschwitz. Wallenberg, a righteous gentile, was posthumously granted honorary
•••••• citizenship in numerous countries, and his heroism has been duly noted and celebrated around
the world.
JANUARY 23
While not everyone is in a position to provide for or rescue those in need, we are all able to
Gedolim Fair empathize—even if only in thought—with the hardships and suffering of others.
(more information to follow)
In this week’s parsha, the Torah records the names of the children of the shevatim, tribes. In
•••••• doing so, we find a striking difference between the recording of Levi’s children in contrast to
those of his brothers’ children. Instead of the common bnei Reuven (the children of Reuven) or
JAN. 30 - FEB. 6 bnei Shimon (the children of Shimon), the Torah adds two added words in recording the names of
Levi’s children: V’aleh shemos bnei Levi, And these are the names of the children of Levi
Mid-Winter Vacation (6,6). Why?

•••••• The Shelah HaKadosh explains that while Levi was not personally affected by the shibud
Mitzrayim, the Egyptian subjugation, he prophesized with Ruach HaKodesh (Divine
FEBRUARY 26-27 understanding) that the Jewish people will indeed suffer painfully during this exile. Although
Levi was not directly affected by these events, he empathized so strongly with the fellow Jews
Yavne Production that he chronicled his empathy within the very names he selected for his children. The Torah
(see attached flier) specifically emphasizes v’aleh shemos (and these are the names) because in this manner Levi
participated in the suffering of klal Yisroel. Levi named his children: Gershon, because we were
4:48 strangers in a foreign land; Kehas, because their teeth were blunted due to their troubles; and
Merari, because their lives were embittered.

We read about terrorism and anti-Semitism. We hear about a terminal illness, a debilitating
medical condition, a Covid casualty, a child at risk, poverty, a pending foreclosure,
unemployment, or fragile family dynamics. We take a step back because we feel there is little
we can do to alter the situation. Are we in a position to tackle these problems or truly alleviate
an individual’s sufferings? Perhaps not; but perhaps yes. Thus, contrary to what we might think,
our empathy for the plight of another is truly of critical import—as taught in this week’s parsha.

Is the empathy to benefit those in need or to refine and sensitize our own character? Perhaps
Levi teaches us that it is both.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev

Besides for being mentors, role models and chavrusos to our Junior High talmidim, Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev
yungeleit host Friday evening Oneg Shabbosos at the homes of its Kollel members. Thank you to Rabbi and Mrs. Zev
Busel who recently hosted the eighth grade and Rabbi and Mrs. Barak Strimber who hosted the seventh grade. This
Friday night, Rabbi and Mrs. Mordechai Sommers will host an Oneg Shabbos for the eighth grade in their home.
Thank you for opening your homes and hearts for our boys!

Junior High School

The energy in the room was amazing, the seriousness inspiring, as the
Junior High talmidim gathered in the Beis Medrash to take an exam
on the entire Sefer Bereishis. The exam was a culmination of the
division- wide study of Chumash Bereishis with a new parsha
curriculum under the guidance of Rabbi Kahn. We are proud of our
talmidim for rising to the occasion both in the learning process and
the knowledge attained. Keep it up as we advance through Chumash
Shemos!

Yeshiva Ketana

This past week, the Yeshiva Ketana launched its Shnayim Mikra program covering all grades (including Junior High).
Each talmid who chose to participate was required to recite a portion of the week’s parsha appropriate for his age
level. Every talmid who participated received a reward while 4th thru 8th grade talmidim were also included in the
weekly raffle with an opportunity to win a Target gift card. The program is an eleven week program (covering Sefer

Shemos). It was wonderful to see the amount of boys who chose to participate.
The winners for this week’s raffles were: 4th grade: Yaakov Boim, Shneur
Zalman Jacobs, Yerachmiel Kroll, Moshe Kushnerski and Dovid Samowitz. 5th
grade: Moshe Abrin, Menachem Elkan, Binyamin Nathan, Moshe Dov Salamon
and Yaakov Tolchinsky. 6th Grade: Chaim Alevsky, Eliezer Berkman, Shimon
Meisels, Boaz Smith and Avrohom Spector. Each week the boys will come
home with a “Shnayim Mikra” card explaining all the rules and what is
expected of them. Looking forward to an even greater participation in the
upcoming weeks.
Mazel tov to Aharon Klahr who made a siyum on Meseches D’mai in Rabbi A.L.
Mann’s fourth grade class.

Junior High

At Yavne, we recognize that academics and emotional
wellbeing go hand in hand. Therefore, we are committed
to nurturing our girls emotionally as well. Mrs. A. Grodko,
our guidance counselor for grades 7-9, recently ran a
“growth mindset” workshop with Yavne Junior High 7th
grade. Pictured here is the poster that Leah Axelrod,
Devorah Cohen, and Bailey Lempel designed. Congratula-
tions to the raffle winner, Nechama Sauber.

The following are some responses submitted by our girls -
from the raffle incentive at the conclusion of the work-

Girls Elementary

All of our third grade classes completed Parshas Toldos. Pictured
here are students in Miss Libersohn’s class celebrating with an ice

cream party.
General Studies
Mrs. Durfey’s Social Studies
classes are learning about the
French and Indian War. Mrs. Durfey reached out to Mrs. Stoll’s 5th grade to see
if a former student would like to try a day of teaching. “Morah” Ruthie Aloni
volunteered to teach this week. With much dedication to lesson planning and
preparing, she definitely got a real taste of homework at a new level!

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten students enjoy a rich and exciting curriculum. A
new addition to the program this year is Library time with our school
librarian, Mrs. Jacqueline Stern. Each week, Mrs. Stern prepares a
special story for our students and they eagerly await her visit!

Early Childhood

This week’s parsha is so exciting for the children. The makkos came alive in every class
through stories, creative games, activities and fun projects.
Our four-year-old kinderlach have been learning about Shabbos for the past couple of
weeks. They created beautiful challah boards and challah covers. This week, they baked
delicious challos. The kinderlach are so excited to bring home all their projects and challos
and to sharing them with their families for Shabbos!
