Chadashos 8.12.22

Chadashos 8.12.22

August 12, 2022 | ‫פרשת ואתחנן | ט''ו אב תשפ''ב‬

‫בס‘‘ד‬

AUGUST 28 Towards the end of his life, my grandfather, Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, zt”l invested
his precious time to trace his ancestry but his most accomplished life ended too soon and
Kindergarten Open House at this project was incomplete. After my grandfather left this world, my father, zt”l
the Klein Campus continued where his father left off. Among my childhood memories are my father’s
(lower parking lot) tireless efforts in his spare moments to trace his ancestry back to Dovid HaMelech with
11:00-12:00 an accompanying biography of each subject along the way. Until this day, his
genealogical sefer, Ilana D’Chaye, serves as an incredible, and equally impressive,
•••••• ancestral resource for our family.

AUGUST 31 Our work often requires the efforts of subsequent generations to bring it to fruition or to
realize its full potential. In this week’s parsha, Kli Yakar draws our attention to the
First Day of School analogy of an elderly individual who toiled to plant an Esrog tree despite his realization
Early Childhood Orientation that the tree couldn’t possibly produce its fruits during his lifetime. Yet, he invested his
time and energy so that his progeny would reap the fruits of his labor. So too, comments
•••••• Kli Yakar, the Torah states Veshamarta es chukav v’es mishpatav asher yitav lecha
u’levanecha acharecha, And you shall observe Hashem’s decrees and commandments so
SEPTEMBER 1 that Hashem will bring good to you and to your children after you (4,40).

First Full Day of School Kli Yakar explains that the word acharecha, after you, is seemingly redundant and thus
First Day of Early Childhood comments that levanecha acharecha dictates that one should seize the opportunity of a
mitzvah even if its rewards, the fruits of his labor, were destined to emerge beyond his
8:11 own lifetime. Whether the benefits of one’s labor will be good for himself or for his
children after him, either way we plant for the future and it will be to the benefit of the
contributor or those who succeed him.

We strive, and ultimately do the best we can, to enrich our lives and to accomplish our
mission during our sojourn in this world. But we don’t live merely for ourselves. We live
for our children and for the generations which follow, because that is the mesorah of Klal
Yisrael; to pave the path of hemshech hadoros, Jewish continuity.

So many of those who preceded us were instrumental in building a post Holocaust
spiritual infrastructure or, at the very least, can be credited with making the right
decisions which altered the trajectory of their family and upgraded their spiritual
landscape for generations to come. Which landmark contributions and life altering
legacies will we make for banecha acharecha, the future generations which are destined
to succeed us?

Have a wonderful Shabbos!
