70TH ANNUAL HEBREW ACADEMY 2 Over 700 guests attended the Academy’s milestone 70th Scholarship Dinner at the Beatrice Stone Yavne High School. The dinner honored Dr. BrianandGill Wolovitz and presented the Alumnus Award to Mr. Hillel Soclof of Baltimore, Maryland. Twenty-fi ve year veterans, Rabbi Malkiel Hefter and Rabbi Shraga and Mrs. Sharon Weimer were presented with tickets for trips to Israel. The Hebrew Academy Boys’ Choir, under the direction of Rabbis Simcha andShmuel Yaakov Mann, performed beautifully. Dinner participants received a brand new book, A Touch of Class: 70 Years of Indelible Chinuch Moments, edited by Academy alumnus Rabbi Yechiel Spero. The book contained students’ memories of Academy teachers, staff, and lay leaders. Those in attendance also received the newest edition of Peninim on the Torah by Rabbi Leibel Scheinbaum; this series is always a welcome addition to the Shabbos table. The dinner was graced with the presence of Rabbi Yisroel M. Lau, former Chief Rabbi of Israel and currently Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv. Rabbi Lau delivered an inspiring speech to the audience. Rabbi Lau explained that the continuity of the Jewish people defi es natural laws, that the fl ames of the Holocaust should have devoured the entire nation. However, thanks to the Jewish characteristics of perseverance and tenacity, the Jewish people have survived. Thanks to the determination and vision of leaders like Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler, k”mz, the Hebrew Academy has nurtured thousands of families across the globe. Because of the positive enduring vision and the hard work of its leaders, Judaism prospers. Other speakers included Rabbi Shlomo Eisenberger, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Mr. Gary Gross, Dr. Louis Malcmacher and honorees, Dr. Wolovitz, andMr. Hillel Soclof. 4 EARLY CHILDHOOD Kindergarten is a time of discovery and the time when children are initiated into the world of knowledge. The Hebrew and English alphabet are introduced, berachos are learned, and the year is capped with its wondrous highlights; siddur parties that are always very sweet a n d t o u c h i n g occasions. For the fourth year in a row the Academy’s Early Childhood Division has earned the distinction of a Star Award rating by the State of Ohio’s Step Up to Quality Program. This year the Early Childhood Division has a record enrollment. Our youngest members of the Academy family delight and amuse us all. Theirs is an adventurous journey around the Jewish year – so many yomim tovim, shabbosos, a different parsha story each week! Lugging home bags of handmade projects, these proud mini-students savor their introduction to the phenomenal world of our heritage. KINDERGARTEN
5 YESHIVA KETANA Chumash, Mishnayos, and Hascholas Gemara are taught with attention to each individual talmid. Project B.E.A.M. (Be a Mentch) encourages exemplary middos. Students performed this Chanukah at Legacy Village (a local shopping district), Montefi ore (a senior citizen’s rehabilitation center), Stone Gardens (an assisted living facility), and at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. Student Council raised money for Noah’s Ark of Hope (a counseling program in memory of Noah Pozner, a six-year old boy killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School) and collected nonperishable food for the Hachnosas Orchim apartment in Cleveland. The theme of this year’s annual Middos Program was “Nishmas,” lessons to be learned from each of Hashem’s creations. The program highlight was a Mother/Daughter Melaveh Malkah in memory of Mrs. Beverly Koval, v”g. All talmidos participated in the Tiki Program, a year-long effort by the Chofetz Chaim Foundation to eliminate bullying. Curriculum includes intensive writing workshops and profi ciency in computer programs like Type to Learn, Inspiration, and PowerPoint. Our award-winning Bigs and Littles program matched 70 pairs who meet weekly and share activities. GIRLS ELEMENTARY AROUND THE YEAR
6 The Yeshiva High School has instituted programs to enhance the Torah study and supportive atmosphere of this division. Weekly review tests are given on the material learned. Three levels of achievement are recognized with Kesser Chazzara awards. Talmidim who excel in Tefi llah are rewarded with a Sundae with the Menahel, Rabbi Yissochar Fishman. Kollel fellows learn in the same Beis Medrash as the talmidim, and pair with talmidim for night seder learning sessions. The Kollel fellows have formed warm relationships with the talmidim and often invite them to their homes. The Rebbeim are dedicated to the growth of their talmidim and often arrange Shabbos get-togethers and melaveh malkahs in their homes. There is a winter Friday night learning program, Summer Shelosh Seudos and a mishmor program on Thursday nights. There was a communitywide bonfi re on Lag B’omer and a community-wide Yarchei Kalleh learning program before Shavuos. The High School also has instituted a Chessed Program; talmidim visit nursing homes on a regular basis throughout the school year. Plans are in progress to add Advanced Placement Calculus and English. AP courses are modeled upon comparable college courses. These courses teach students to develop advanced critical thinking skills and content knowledge. YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL
This year Yavne hosted over 600 delegates from 60 high schools around the country who came to Cleveland to participate in the International Bais Yaakov Convention. Yavne students combined their talents to organize the weekend. In a short span of time our talmidos formed committees to arrange programming, productions, and classroom design according to the theme. Committees also arranged housing, transportation, a gala local trip, and food for the guests. The convention ran smoothly and participants were impressed with our multi-talented students. The eleventh grade government class invited retired Congressman Louis Stokes. The seniors enjoyed a visit to Ohio State House where they were addressed by House Minority Leader Armond Budish and State Senator Nina Turner. Student Council raised over $1,000 for relief funds for Hurricane Sandy victims. Every month, a Rosh Chodesh activity unites the student body in a fun activity that adds to the camaraderie of the school. Their day is long, and the emphasis is on academics, but students relish the convivial atmosphere on the Yavne campus. YAVNE HIGH SCHOOL 7
This past winter marked the Hebrew Academy Kollel’s formal inauguration as Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev, in memory of Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler, k”mz, the esteemed visionary who guided the Academy for sixty seven years. The occasion was celebrated with a gala melaveh malkah graced by the presence of the venerable Rabbi Yitzchok Scheiner, Rosh Yeshiva of Kaminetz, member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, and a friend of Rabbi Dessler, k”mz, dating back to the early 1940’s. Other speakers included Rabbi Zev Busel, Rosh Kollel, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Educational Director, Mr. Mendy Klein, and Mr. Reuven Dessler. Dr. Louis Malcmacher was master of ceremonies, and Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Baron was honored with reading a letter signed by this generation’s foremost gedolim who reside in Israel. The text which follows, Rabbi Scheiner’s address to the Yeshiva High School student body, inspires us all to reach for greater heights in learning and teaching. KOLLEL 1. It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to be in this place today. I have come many miles to be here, and I am not a young man. It is not easy for me to travel but a person always goes where HaKadosh Boruch Hu tells him to go. Hashem sent me here for a very important purpose. The holy yeshiva, the Hebrew Academy, was founded many years ago by a dear friend and although we were almost the same age, I always looked up to him very much because he was a very special person, and he came from a very special place – a very famous and holy city which was destroyed by the Nazis, a”nh. That friend of mine was Rabbi Nochum Velvel Dessler who many years ago founded this yeshiva – which has brought to Torah tens of thousands of people throughout the many years that this wonderful makom Torah is in existence. If HaKadosh Baruch Hu sent me such a great distance to speak with you boys, it was for a purpose. I personally was born not far from this city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The two states – Pennsylvania and Ohio – are not far from each other. In those years, when I was born, the beginning of 1922, almost 100 years ago, there was almost no Torah in America. There was no Torah in Cleveland. There was no Torah in Pittsburgh, and I went to public elementary and high school. There were 60,000 Jews in Pittsburgh and the great majority of them had no connection with Judaism. I had a miracle…A person came from a great distance and saved my spiritual life. He took me to one of the only yeshivos in existence in America at that time. You know why he did it? Because he cared. He was a caring individual who always tried to do something for the Ribbono Shel Olam. Whenever he could save someone in the Ribbono Shel Olam’s army, he did it. And that’s why I was saved. Baruch Hashem you are in a tremendous makom Torah… I want to tell you today about the little town where Rabbi Dessler was born. He was born in a little town in Lithuania called Kelm. That little town was the most special town in the whole world outside of Yerushalayim. What was so special about Kelm? There was a yeshiva in Kelm, like this yeshiva. The Roshei Yeshiva and teachers in that yeshiva were the grandparents of Rabbi Dessler, and they were among the greatest tzaddikim and geonim in the world. What was special about the teaching of Kelm that every one of us should try to learn from? The air of Kelm was full of kedusha. Kelm taught us to love every Jew with all your life. The Torah teaches v’ahavta l’raacha kamocha but in Kelm, they did what no one else did. An example was one who always did mitzvos until late at night. When he came to the house where he stayed, the occupants were always asleep, and he was afraid that he would wake someone, so when he entered the door, he took off his shoes. The sound of the creak can awaken a person, and he was always afraid that maybe he would disturb someone. He would never do something to cause pain to someone else. In Kelm they did everything in their power to make everyone happy. They were the most kind, considerate people. They never spoke one word of lashon harah. They never touched something that did not belong to them. They were superior in all mitzvos bein adam laMakom and bein adam l’chaveiro. Today the great teachers of mussar in yeshivos all over the world are the students of those teachers in Kelm. You have a tremendous opportunity as students of this yeshiva. The Academy could be called “The Kelm of America” because Rabbi Dessler was born in Kelm, and he lived like a Kelemer all his life. He talked like a Kelemer. He couldn’t shout like an American could. He always spoke like a prince. The people of Kelm were famous for their princely manner. Their goodness. Their kindness. You have a tremendous opportunity and zechus, but you also have a big obligation. You have to be nicer than others. More considerate than others. You have to speak to your parents and teachers more respectfully than others do because you learn in Rabbi Dessler’s yeshiva. I want to give you a bracha – each and every one of you – from the depths of my heart; that you should become true talmidim of Kelm – of the tremendous city of Kelm destroyed by the Nazis that was rebuilt by your teachers in Cleveland. May Moshiach Tzidkenu come bimhera veyamenu. Amen. And we will meet in Yerushalayim – and please, whoever is in Yerushalayim, don’t forget to look me up! Kol tuv. Address by Rabbi Yitzchok Scheiner, Rosh Yeshiva, Kaminetz Yeshiva, Jerusalem and Member, Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah 9
10 The list of events coordinated by our PTA Presidents, Mrs. Gracie Clements and Mrs. Shoshie Klein and their committees is long and impressive. Events include a Percentage Off Sale at “Five Below”, a Chanukah raffl e, Cookie Dough Sale, Chocolate Sale, Gift Wrap Sale, and HAC Car Magnet sale. PTA arranged a Sunday musical event with the Yeshiva Boys Choir and the Kol Simcha Orchestra. Also on their agenda were a Ladies Melaveh Malkah, Swim and Gym for Fathers and Sons and another one for Mothers and Daughters. There was a trip to Lake Metroparks Farmpark during Succos, ice-skating during winter break, and an amusement park trip to the IX Center on chol hamoed Pesach. Enrichment programs helped foster individual talents and a Purim Carnival was a successfully boisterous and jolly event. The Chinese Auction is always set up beautifully and draws a large crowd. Our PTA has created an indefatigable team. Fun in the sun, guided activities, morning learning, exciting trips, caring and competent counselors, many friends – these all add up to the invigorating summer experience that is provided by the Hebrew Academy’s summer day camp program. Each day is packed with activities that are healthy and productive, the camp creates great, lasting memories for all its participants. CAMP STEP PTA
