Chadashos 5.6.22

Chadashos 5.6.22

May 6, 2022 | ‫פרשת קדשים | ה' אייר תשפ''ב‬

‫בס‘‘ד‬

MAY 10 World War II was over. The Jewish world had been decimated, its spiritual infrastructure was
destroyed, and six million Jews tragically perished in the Holocaust. After enduring the most
School Pictures for unspeakable atrocities, Holocaust survivors heroically attempted to rebuild their lives. Amid this
Yavne High School most incredibly challenging landscape, an envelope made its way through the European postal
service to the United States. It was a letter penned by my grandfather, Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler,
•••••• zt”l to his only son and only daughter, my father and my aunt. Due to the war, the family was
geographically separated for some seven years but this letter, and hundreds of others, became well-
MAY 22 springs of parenting, bonding, education and inspiration. This particular letter addressed the
challenge of life after the Holocaust:

“The riches we once had are destroyed and gone. The picture of that rich past is still vivid before our
•••••• eyes…but the present is void. That spiritual wealth, that unique yeshiva atmosphere, that yearning
for truth, that intellectual brilliance, that fear of Hashem, that warmth, are no longer with us. Our
MAY 26 sacred ones have gone to a place where no destruction could ever overtake them. The Shechina has
gone from us, and if we tell our children what we have witnessed and experienced, it would merely
Picture Retakes be a story. We saw the Shechina revealed, but how would they see it? But wait! Let us search our
souls. Is idealism gone or perhaps it still stirs within us? Perhaps it can be revived and we can restore
•••••• sanctity on this earth. If we can revive the desire for life, we are alive… Why have we survived?”

JULY 4 - AUGUST 12 “We are the ones who observed the greatness of sanctity. Who can restore it if not we? The spirit of
Torah shall not perish in our generation. If the destruction was profound then our collective resolve
Camp STEP to rebuild must mirror it. If we sacrifice for it, our children could yet witness the sanctity as we
witnessed it. They, too, will know the revelation of the Shechina in their hearts; they will still
8:11 recognize the ancient spirit of Klal Yisrael which dwells in the yeshiva; they will yet breathe it and live
it... Real sacrifice is demanded of us. Come, let us build ourselves, our children, our Torah
institutions. Let us restore the hearts of parents and children to Torah and Hashem will bless our
efforts with success. Come, let us be strong and persist, let us grow further and ascend higher. We
shall never retreat.”

In retrospect, at a period in time when spiritual ambition and infrastructure development were
highly unlikely, my grandfather’s passionate charge now appears prophetic. Fortunately, the
incredible rebirth of Torah scholarship, the development of schools, yeshivos and kollelim, and the
growth of our communities post Holocaust are astounding. But we are never quite there and we
must always be cognizant of who we are and why we are here.

Much of the successes of America’s early Torah pioneers can be attributed to their adherence to the
imperative which introduces this week’s parsha: Kedoshim tihyu, to be holy and to consistently act
with sanctity and dignity (19,2). For them, this injunction represented a mandate for Jewish living.
Our approach to all aspects of life and our ambitions for our progeny are to reclaim that which was
lost and rebuild that which was destroyed. Yet, our contributions and accomplishments must reflect
the spirit of kedoshim tihyu, the ultimate barometer by which growth oriented Jews are measured,
defined and perceived. That is who we are and why we are here.

Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev

Two new amazing opportunities for junior high talmidim are presented by Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev members. Hilchos Shab-
bos followed by toameha is led by Rabbi Eliyahu Machlis on Erev Shabbos, thirty minutes prior to early Mincha at Congrega-
tion Zichron Chaim. On Shabbos afternoon, a second program features 45 minute chavrusah learning led by Rabbi Ahron
Simcha Baum, also held at Zichron Chaim. Yasher koach to Rabbi Machlis and Rabbi Baum and to all the talmidim who
choose to participate and enhance their Shabbos experience!

Junior High School

The Junior High Night Seder had a special visitor on Monday as Rabbi
Yaakov Bender, Rosh Yeshiva of Darchei Torah in far Rockaway, who was
in Cleveland for a wedding, came to spend some time with our boys.

Highly complimentary of the
boys, he lauded them for
voluntarily spending their
time at Night Seder and
furthering their learning.
Rabbi Bender’s message,
using Rabbi Akiva as the
ultimate role model, was that regardless of what comes our way in life, one
should never give up. After his talk he spent a few moments getting to know all
the boys.

Yeshiva Ketana

In two separate assemblies yesterday, the
Yeshiva Ketana was treated to a live from
Eretz Yisrael, interactive presentation about
Eretz Yisrael. We took a virtual tour of the
land at its mekomos hakedoshim and the
boys were able to ask the guide questions.
Rabbi Morris’s 4th grade talmidim celebrated completing Meseches Sukkah at “Get
Air” Trampoline Park, followed by slurpees. Special thanks to Mr. Bloom and Mrs.
Covitch for helping with transportation. The boys had a great time!

Top Shacharis winners in the sixth grade (includes daily attendance with proper
davening and decorum): Meir Simcha Burgess, Eliyahu Cohn, Yanky Elkan, Efrayim
Finegold, Avrohom Freedman, Zevy Joseph, Aviezer Kirsch, Yonah Koval, Yehuda
Perman, Yaakov Ribiat, Gideon Salamon, Mordechai Samowitz, Dovid Aryeh Stelzer,

Yavne High School

Yavne High School broke out Color War on Rosh Chodesh and it was a
very successful and enjoyable event. Congratulations to our amazing
G.O. and Color War Captains for facilitating such an incredible
event. Our two teams Bein Adam LaMakom and Bein Adam LaChav-

ero were led by Rochi Rappaport, Mindy
Platcheck, Shira Mann, Rivky Spolter,

Perri Elias and Miriam Netanel. The girls
competed and presented very creative and
meaningful art, snacks, songs, inspiration,
multi-media, accessories and song-
dance. We are very proud of our Yavne High
School students for their tremendous dis-
play of achdus, ruach and tochen!!

Girls Elementary

What a wonderful way to begin the week. Our week began by celebrating Rosh
Chodesh Iyar, with the beautiful sounds of Hallel echoing throughout our hallways.
Morah Zuckerman's class is using the days of Sefiras HaOmer to fill their hearts and
“Thank you Hashem” notebooks with hakaras hatov. Every day the girls brainstorm
and thank Hashem for the multitude of reasons for which they are grateful. How
fitting it is that as we prepare for Matan Torah, their first big thank you is “ Thank
you Hashem” for the Torah. If you are visiting our building, you will notice the beau-
tiful bulletin board that our first graders worked on, depicting their outstanding
middos, bain adam lichavairo. They are true loyal and caring friends!

Eretz Yisrael was in our hearts and minds, once again, yesterday as we partici-
pated in a special, live program with an instructor in Yerushalayim. We
learned so much about the beauty of the land, the mitzvos to be observed
there, and the many opportunities within Eretz Yisrael.
Morah Liebershon’s first grade reviewed all the shorashim they have learned
this year. For each shoresh learned, one of the girls dropped a popcorn kernel
into the jar. The girls then enjoyed freshly popped popcorn at their party!

Kindergarten

Morah Rivky and Morah Tehilah started a nice v’ahavta l’raiacha kamochah
program. Every time Morah catches someone being a kind friend, the class earns a
scoop on the ice cream cone. They are excited for their ice cream party in a few
weeks. The children worked hard illustrating beautiful pictures on how to be a nice
friend.
Please note that our classes are gearing up for their Siddur parties scheduled for the
end of the year. Each class has informed parents about the upcoming schedule. We
are so excited for each Siddur Mesiba!

Early Childhood

On Monday, Rosh Chodesh Iyar, our kinderlach decorated Rosh Chodesh hats, got
treats, and celebrated together singing and dancing.
Morah Laya and Morah Shayna's kinderlach are learning about community helpers. This
week, they learned all about police officers. They read books and created their very own
uniforms. Additionally, they learned the importance of "stranger danger," what to do if
they chas veshalom get lost and how to call 9-1-1.
Morah Dena and Morah Chaya’s afternoon class have been learning their colors for
some time now. To culminate this unit, the children created binoculars and set out to
search for as many colored items as they could possibly find in their classroom, and
throughout our building. This was a really fun, and “hands and eyes on” learning
experience.
We strongly encourage everyone to complete the registration papers for their
children for the coming year. Believe it or not, we are already planning and working
on our next year’s classes and some classes are already full!
