CL H GHER MBING EIGHTY-FIRST ANNUAL NURTURING CONNECTIONS. INSPIRING LEADERS. 4 // Academy in Action The chinuch provided by the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland has flourished for eighty-one years. Founded in 1943, initiated and guided by the Telshe Roshei Yeshiva, the school began as a beacon of hope for a generation that felt compelled to relentlessly build after the Holocaust destroyed their lives, homes, and community institutions. Throughout the years, in times of peace and times of turmoil, the Academy has continued to educate generations of children with a love of Hashem, Torah, and the Land of Israel. Today the Hebrew Academy is stronger than ever, with a current enrollment of 1,457 students at three campuses. The parent body now includes fourth generation students as well as many families who have chosen to live in Cleveland and establish family roots here, in the knowledge that their children will be educated in excellence. The Hebrew Academy has a long-standing policy to accept students regardless of their financial considerations. It is for this reason that the Scholarship Campaign is vital to the Academy’s budget. Through the funds received from its annual campaign, the Academy upholds its legacy of providing an outstanding education for each and every student. The Academy’s Scholarship Tribute Dinner will אי״ה place on April 1, 2024. The Dinner will be held at The Cleveland Museum of Art. The Dinner will pay tribute to Doctors Shaya and Tamara Lempel. Rabbi Yitz Frank will receive the Mendy Klein Community Service Award. The Alumnus Award will be presented to Rabbi Maimon Elbaz. Scholarship Campaign Chairs are: Mrs. Ita Klein, Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Reuven Dessler, and Mr. and Mrs. Amir Jaffa. Our Scholarship Campaign goal is $2,436,000. For more information, please call 216.382.3300 ext. 360. For ads, please call extension 372 or email [email protected]. (continued from page 1) A Message from Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel When the Torah extolls the virtues of Eretz Yisrael, the land of Israel, Rabbeinu Bachya expounds with an analogy: Just as the heart of man represents the source of life, for its blood flows through the pulmonic valve into the pulmonary arteries and lungs thereby sustaining life, so too, Eretz Yisrael represents the heart of the world, the central focus of Divine aspiration, and its blessings emanate throughout the world. A love for Eretz Yisrael is incorporated in the longstanding mission of Beis Chinuch Horav Dessler / Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. The Academy is a pioneer not only in Jewish day school education but also in sending its graduates to continue their studies in Israel. This year, in the days preceding the festival of Succos, my wife and I were delighted to host a Yerushalayim reunion dinner for the thirty-six 2023 Beatrice Stone Yavne High School graduates currently studying there. It was a nachas to witness their camaraderie and to hear their enthusiastic appreciation both of the school and the opportunity to experience the gift of Eretz Yisrael. On the evening of October 7, subsequent to the tragic current events, when it was still Yom Tov in America, I reached out to each of the graduates to offer comfort and assistance, and thankfully they were all safe. Since that fateful day, the Academy has implemented over 20 initiatives to foster a sense of empathy within the hearts and minds of our students. We held immediate assemblies highlighting acts of achdus and nosei b’ol, unity and empathy. We divided up the entire Sefer Tehillim to be recited daily. We participated in a national Torah Umesorah Yom Tefilah. We held Amen parties for added zechusim and students accepted personal initiatives upon themselves. We incorporated an Acheinu song into our daily tefilah. We joined a 10 minute a day national Achim b’Tefilah program. Our students wrote letters of encouragement to the Israeli soldiers. We collected and communicated the names of Academy alumni who are serving as soldiers on the front lines. We created a Shemiras HaLashon S.O.S. Save our Soldiers program. We held a tzedakah auction and we participated in campaigns for the families of needy soldiers. We created tzitzis for soldiers who expressed a thirst for spirituality, and we launched a school-wide Chanukah menorah campaign for soldiers on the go. We welcomed fifteenyear-old Shira Perez whose brother Daniel, an IDF tank commander, is missing in action, and she inspired Yavne students with an incredible story of faith. We created a partnership and pen pals with a school in Netivot, Israel. We enhanced the school’s popular midwinter Daf a Day program by connecting each talmid with the name of a soldier to daven for. The Academy also hosted the Federation’s community-wide vigil for the hostages, many families joined the Federation sponsored rally in Washington, and we distributed Federation’s awareness lawn signs. As we prepare to celebrate 81 years of excellence in chinuch, we recognize that all of the above is encompassed in an education for life. As we expand our school’s infrastructure to accommodate its astounding growth, we are humbled to be a primary anchor for Jewish education and continuity. As we build upon our ever strong foundations, we feel privileged to educate and inspire a fourth generation of students with a joy for learning, for Yiddishkeit, and for life. Thank you all for your partnership in ensuring a promising Jewish future.

Academy in Action // 5 Chanukah Delights The energy in the auditorium was incredible as a capacity crowd gathered to celebrate this annual event. Students in kindergarten and in second grade as well as the Hebrew Academy Boys Choir regaled the audience with songs of faith, hope, inspiration, and appreciation for our heritage. The choir was joined by the Junior High Guitar class and clarinet accompaniment. Refreshments, crafts, inflatables, a photo booth, and many smiles enhanced the evening which was ably organized by the PTA and dedicated volunteers.

6 // Academy in Action Early Childhood These early years are the time to enhance social skills, promote a love of Torah and mitzvos, as well as develop fine and gross motor skills and an introduction to language. The Early Childhood Division does all this with many hands-on projects, teamwork, and exciting activities. Every parsha comes alive as students design umbrellas for Noach’s flood, and recently made bassinets for Moshe in the teivah. A pajama party was held when the classes learned about the berachos that Yaakov Avinu gave Ephraim and Menashe; and students enjoyed singing the bedtime Shema together.

Academy in Action Academy in Action // 7 Kindergarten This is the year when children are taught the fundamentals of the kriah, Hebrew reading, have an auspicious Aleph Bais Siyum, and go on to master nekudos, the vowel sounds below the letters. Students are also introduced to English reading with an activity for each letter such as m for marshmallows and n for necklaces. Students created mini parsha books to celebrate the completion of Shabbos Chazak Bereishis. Social Skills continue to be a priority with Flexy the Monkey who teaches the children to change rigid thinking into flexible thinking.

8 // Academy in Action Yeshiva Ketana Several annual programs are in place to motivate talmidim. Each year, the Division highlights different local organizations to raise money; this year the organizations will be Bikur Cholim and Matan B’Sayser. The Eretz Chemda program, started nine years ago, is taught remotely from Jerusalem. The Keser Shem Tov program awards certificates to students who excel in kavod harav and display exemplary midos to their classmates. The Shnayim Mikra program encourages the talmidim to review the weekly parsha throughout Sefer Shemos. Two annual highlights were Haschalas Gemara, when fathers of fifth graders joined the talmidim to learn together, and Haschalas Chumash when first graders are gifted with their first Chumashim. Eretz Yisroel is on the minds of all our talmidim. The boys have been completing Sefer Tehillim each day. Classes raised over $3,350 for Israel. The Daf-A-Day program during winter break is dedicated this year to the people in Israel; Rebbeim and Moros in every grade created a booklet and assigned a review for the talmidim to complete during the vacation. General Studies has an intramural program, Leagues, that divides fourth through sixth graders into teams that collect points for academics, behavior and athletics, including a chess tournament, spelling bee, geography bee, and other engaging academic challenges. The innovation lab enables elementary school students to experience STEM, laser printing, and wood working. Students are also given the opportunity to work in a greenhouse, to grow maror that will eventually be used at upcoming sedarim. The art class teamed with Limudei Kodesh to create a wall-sized Al Hamichya which now enhances the boys’ cafeteria. The Leagues’ motto is, “play hard, play smart, and always be a mensch.”

Junior High School The theme of the year is the importance of Shabbos and all it entails. There are Shabbos learning programs and inspiring speeches given each week by two different eighth graders. Every month there is a Rosh Chodesh Challenge to motivate the talmidim to reach greater heights. In Chesvhan the challenge was to increase five points of Tefillah; in Kislev the talmidim were charged to learn one hundred hours during the month and each week a different midah, character refinement, was emphasized and practiced. The Chanukah Mesiba included twenty minutes of learning followed by ten minutes of Tehillim for Eretz Yisroel. Every Thursday Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rav, Ahavas Yisroel, Rosh Kollel, Torah L.I.F.E. Ateres Chaim Boruch, and a member of the school’s Vaad HaChinuch, presents a dvar Torah. On Fridays, Rabbi Zev Busel, Rosh Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev speaks as part of the chizuk program for the talmidim. The M’Dor L’Dor program successfully unites fathers, grandfathers, and talmidim for a wonderful legal holiday morning learning session each year. General Studies provides opportunities for the boys to expand their skills and creativity with elective programs. The LEAGUES program is also implemented in the Jr. High. There are elective computer graphics course as well as optional courses in STEM, the stock market, Jewish history, chess, guitar, and art. In addition, Hebrew Academy, in conjunction with CIJE, will host the first-ever Midwest Robotics Tournament for middle school students. Academy in Action // 9

10 // Academy in Action Girls Elementary This year’s theme is “Banim atem l’Hashem, “ we are all the daughters of a King and should look around and try to be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. The social and emotional aspect of this begins in first and second grades where students learn to be empathetic and assertive when friends look upset or need help. A Bas Mitzvah program called LINKS, focuses on a different mitzvah or middah each month in connection to one of the seven nevios, women prophets. The first semester ended with an inspirational Erev Shira, Evening of Song, for parents and students of grades four through six. Many classes have undertaken special obligations for the merit of our soldiers in Israel. Every day students say Tehillim for the soldiers. The younger grades committed to saying berachos out loud and answering amen. Sixth graders try every week to do something special for Shabbos. The sixth graders partnered with Ohel Tamar in Netivot, Israel, exchanged letters, and sent over $3,000 to their newfound friends. General Studies science activities are hands-on and creative. Students made Oobleck, a mixture of water and cornstarch to create a colloid, a mixture that moves when force is applied. Other experiments included creating functional parachutes and mixing acids and bases. Even math becomes exciting when a teacher created an escape room where math skills were required to escape.

// 11 Yavne High School The theme of the Junior High School’s G.O. is “Joys R Us; Tamid B’Simcha,” how to achieve true happiness. The beautiful world Hashem created for us was experienced through a Rosh Hashana trip to Shaker Lakes. The semester continued with Kabbolas Shabbos groups in all three neighborhoods plus eighth grade Friday night get-togethers in students’ homes. A Tefilla Program concentrated on expressions of our appreciation to Hashem like Nishmas, Aleinu, Birchas Hamazon, and Hashkamas Haboker. A Yom Tefillah that included the participation of students’ mothers was arranged for grades seven through twelve. The highlight of the semester was Yavne Junior High’s (Grand)mother/Daughter performance. This year’s theme was hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol, our joy and pride in being the am segulah, a treasured nation and an example for others - one big family, each member unique, yet one big whole. Students in the High School are constantly striving to climb higher and reach their full potential. Project Stand Up focuses on different aspects of kavod; kavod to friends, and kavod to parents and adults. The year began with an emphasis on tefillah; students took a trip to Fairport Harbor where students davened at sunrise over Lake Erie. The Chessed tzedakah program taught students to make the right moves in life. The Kriah Club met twice a week after school and Yavne students volunteer to tutor elementary students to improve kriah skills. The tefillos of the students are focused on those in Israel. Berachos parties were organized where thousands of Amen’s were recited. The school joined a phone conference with five other schools to hear divrei chizuk and say Tehillim. A tzedakah auction raised money to benefit displaced and needy Jews in Eretz Yisroel. Students in grade ten learned on the phone four nights a week as a zechus for soldiers in Israel. Students also joined in a national Mishmeres program whose theme is TSA – Think, Speak, Act, in an effort to SOS – Save our Soldiers. Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, Rav, Young Israel of Greater Cleveland and member of the school’s Vaad HaChinuch, gave words of chizuk and encouraged students to say extra Tehillim. In General Studies, science students used beams of light to identify solutions, suspensions, and colloids. In government class, students worked in groups, created their own political party and developed possible solutions for contemporaneous issues such as homelessness, crime, and hunger in the United States. The High School Basketball Team played against Atara High School in Cincinnati. Academy in Action

12 // Academy in Action The Life & Legacy Partnership Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev is a school-based Kollel which provides role models who connect with our students. Its Night Seder Chavrusa program pairs Junior High Students with members of the Kollel who serve as chavrusos and mentors. The program involves oneon-one learning with yungeleit who are also available to be shoel u’meishiv (answer questions). Members of the Kollel also open their homes on Friday nights to welcome Junior High boys for a weekly Oneg Shabbos. The connections formed between Kollel members and the Junior High talmidim greatly benefit the students involved. Life & Legacy is a partnership program offered by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Planning and Endowment Department and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. This program provides training, support and incentives to help Jewish non-profits secure meaningful after-lifetime gifts. The Hebrew Academy is proud that it was chosen as one of 13 Federation agencies to participate in this program, partner with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and continue our longstanding association with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. Please remember to be remembered with a legacy gift! Monies can be distributed from bequests, retirement funds, life insurance, and other assets. Legacy gifts can be allocated at any age. The vast majority of estates are left to family members since Legacy commitments are only a percentage of an estate and improves the community that heirs will inherit. Be remembered forever by The Hebrew Academy of Cleveland with a gift in your will, trust, retirement account or life insurance policy. For more information, please contact Rabbi Moshe Marcovich at 216.727.3008 or [email protected].

Academy in Action // 13 The Taylor Road Building Renovations Principals, Moros, and teachers of the Girls Elementary Division did a fantastic job of temporarily relocating in September and October so that renovations could be conducted on the Taylor Road Campus. It was with a sense of gratitude and excitement that the Elementary Division returned to their building in the end of November. The Phase One of the renovations projects is completed, and Phase Two of the construction process is currently underway. Under the leadership of Mrs. Shirah Stern, Director of Family Engagement, the PTA has blossomed into a major asset for the school. The school has benefitted from innovative programing, skillfully facilitated by PTA President, Mrs. Yocheved Neeland together with co-presidents Mrs. Rivky Silver, Oakwood Campus; Mrs. Chany Klein, Yavne Campus; and Mrs. Miriam Berman, Taylor Road Campus. The year began with a Popsicles in the Park Meet and Greet for families with children in Ktan Tan (twos) and kindergarten. Sunday Playdates with crafts and refreshments were arranged for threes and fours of the Early Childhood Division. A Family Fun Guide suggested places families could go on Chol Hamoed Sukkos. A Family and Business Directory was published that promotes the building and bonding of school unity. The Chanukah Delights charmed all who attended. The Annual Ladies Melave Malka is a yearly highlight. Always appreciative of teachers’ and school personnel’s efforts, the PTA sends a monthly token of appreciation to all staff members. The PTA has done a tremendous job of connecting our school body of more than 530 families. PTA

14 // Academy in Action Graduates in Eretz Yisrael During their trip to Israel in October, Rabbi and Mrs. Simcha Dessler hosted the 2023 Beatrice Stone Yavne High School graduates currently studying in Israel. An Evening of Inspiration Upper elementary students showcased their Project Based Learning units to the greater community. Fourth grade shared their States Fair projects; fifth grade the solar system, and sixth grade invention convention projects and Robotics experiences. These multiple outlets to express curricular knowledge together with art, technology, and the innovation lab create the necessary avenues to tap into each student’s individual strengths. Evening of Song Melave Malka This energizing evening brought together mothers, grandmothers, and daughters for an evening of achdus and inspiration, a wonderful Erev Shira. Upper elementary grades presented magnificent songs accompanied by choreography that expanded on the theme of Shabbos. Though temperatures outside were in the teens, the atmosphere inside was full of warmth and appreciation.
