RABBI SIMCHA DESSLER, Educational Director The celebration marking 73 years of excellence in education enables us at Bais Chinuch Harav Dessler, Hebrew Academy of Cleveland to pause and reflect upon past achievements and future aspirations. Our founders, the great Roshei Yeshiva zt”l who survived the atrocities of the Holocaust and the dedicated lay leaders who were their partners, were visionaries who planted the seeds of an incredible future. Today, the Academy educates and inspires 970 students, many of whom are second and third generation Academy children. Scores of families have relocated to Cleveland to benefit from the Academy experience. We are blessed with an extraordinary Limudei Kodesh and General Studies faculty – who are dedicated beyond words to the success of the individual child. They continue to invest their efforts and energ y, indeed, their hearts and souls, into their avodas hakodesh, sacred life’s mission. Our children are beneficiaries of many life altering programs as they receive an education for life. Innovative midos programs, Shabbatons, Eretz Yisrael partnerships, Bigs and Littles, enrichment, intergenerational and chesed / community service programs enhance the Academy experience. New and exciting this year and joining our team of professionals are a math coach, literacy coach, technolog y integration specialist and two behavior interventionists. This month, Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev, our school based Kollel held a Melava Malkah and Siyum HaShas commemorating the fifth yarhzeit of my father, our unforgettable Dean, Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler zt”l – a man of vision and inspiration whose unique imprint continues to guide the standards and nurture the neshama, soul of our school. At our recent mother-daughter Melava Malkah I expressed that the Torah is a morashah, a heritage. Rabbi Mordechai Gifter zt”l explained that a morashah is different than a yerushah, inheritance. A morashah is an inheritance to be cherished and enjoyed but with a stipulation to transmit it to subsequent generations. This is the beauty of our heritage. At the Academy, we are writing another chapter in Jewish continuity. The Academy’s remarkable growth has resulted in significant space constraints at the school’s current facilities. After much strategic planning by our most dedicated lay leadership, the Academy acquired the 92 acre property of the historic Oakwood Country Club. Our vision, with Siyata d’Shmaya, is to create a fabulous, state of the art educational complex that will promote excellence, provide a new generation of children with a promising future, and be transformational for the community. Please join us as we continue to grow m’chayil el chayil, from strength to strength. Thank you for your continued partnership and support. SEVENTY-THIRD HEBREW ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN The enrollment in the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland has now topped 970 students, the largest in its decades of existence. The Academy is delighted with this phenomenal growth and is looking towards the future as it continues to adhere to its original mission to promote excellent Judaic and secular studies while transmitting our Jewish heritage with vibrancy and expertise to future generations. The Academy is constantly searching out innovative programs and securing professional staff to service the needs of our diverse population so that the potential of every child can be nurtured and developed. Over the years the Academy has produced generations of graduates who have pursued careers in religious and secular fields; many have assumed the mantle of leadership in their respective communities across the globe. All students at the Academy receive the same excellent education regardless of financial considerations. It is for this reason that the Scholarship Campaign is so vital to the Academy’s budget. Through the funds received from our annual campaign, the Academy can uphold its legacy of educational excellence for all students. This year’s Scholarship Campaign Chairs are Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Reuven Dessler, Mr. and Mrs. Amir Jaffa, and Mr. and Mrs. Mendy Klein. The Scholarship Campaign goal is $2,136,000. The Dinner, to be held on Sunday, March 13, 2016, will pay tribute to Dr. and Mrs. Shlomo Koyfman. The Alumnus Award will be presented to Rabbi Mordecai Mannes of Chicago. For reservations and journal ads please e-mail [email protected] or call 216-321-5838 ext. 160. IN TRIBUTE TO: Dr. Shlomo and Aliza Koyfman An alumnus of Yeshiva University, Dr. Shlomo Koyfman completed his medical training at Yale University School of Medicine and his residency at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Koyfman holds joint appointments as an assistant professor in the departments of Radiation Oncology and Bioethics at the Cleveland Clinic and is a member of the hospital ethics committee. Deeply committed to Torah scholarship and Jewish education, Dr. Koyfman is a board member of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland and has been active with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s campaign for Jewish needs and other communal endeavors. Aliza Koyfman is a graduate of Stern College for Women with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She has volunteered her time on behalf of the school’s advisory committees, and PTA fundraising campaigns. The Koyfmans personify the absolute finest in young leadership and are shining examples of community minded activists. They are the parents of seven children – six of which are currently enrolled at the Academy and an infant who will follow his siblings! THE ALUMNUS AWARD Rabbi Mordecai Mannes Rabbi Mordecai Mannes has earned an outstanding reputation for his remarkable contributions to the worlds of Torah chinuch, adult education and Jewish outreach. Rabbi Mannes continues their legacy as he inspires a new generation with a greater appreciation of their heritage. Tzeischem L’Shalom / Farewell At the Dinner, a tribute will be tendered to Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Baron, Rosh Mesivta Emeritus, who will pursue his life’s dream and relocate to Eretz Yisrael later this year. For over eighteen years the Foundation has demonstrated a deep commitment in improving the health and wellbeing within the Jewish and general communities. They make a profound difference in lives.” The Hebrew Academy also received a grant from the James Patterson Foundation thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Jan Braverman, the writing mentor for elementary grades. MOTIVATING AND INSPIRING PROGRAMS We are blessed with fellow Clevelanders who have taken time to inspire our students. Holocaust survivor, Mr. George Kronenberg, a resident of Beachwood who was one of three hundred children on the second kindertransport from Germany to England, spoke with Yeshiva High School students. Our own Bubby Esther Mann spoke to Yeshiva Ketana students about her experiences in Russia during World War II. Rabbi Simcha Dessler moderated a dynamic career panel of local professionals who spoke to students in the Yeshiva High School about their respective professions. The panelists included (right-left) Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein (Rav, Young Israel of Greater Clevelend); Dr. Brian Gastman (Co-Director, Cleveland Clinic Melanoma Program and Associate Professor of Surgery at CWRMS and the Cleveland Clinic); Mr. David Seiger (Vice President, Long Term Care Insurance Marketing, Berson-Sokol Agency); Mr. Andy Lefkowitz (President and CEO, Ganeden Biotech,Inc.). Under the leadership of Mrs. Chani Berner and Mrs. Avigayil Malcmacher, PTA arranged many school programs. The school collected funds to purchase Chanukah menorahs, candles, and doughnuts for IDF soldiers. “The Cleveland Market” at the stately Oakwood Country Club featured Ms. Miriam Pascal,“the Overtime Cook”, and a multitude of vendors displayed their wares to an enthusiastic crowd. PTA also arranged Chanukah Delights, a family program featuring special performances by kindergarten students and the Hebrew Academy Boys Choir. On January 10th Uncle Moishy wowed the community with his usual exuberant performance on the wonders of being a Jewish boy or girl. The hard work of the PTA presidium and their many volunteers ensured the success of these projects. PTA KOLLEL ATERES NOCHUM ZEV The Kollel continues to be an integral part of the Academy community. Kollel members inspire the community with their dedication to the Academy, hosting melava malkahs and Friday night get-togethers as well as forming personal relationships with bachurim in the Yeshiva High School. The Kollel hosted a community-wide Shabbos of Chizuk, Melava Malkah and Siyum haShas on January 23 to commemorate the fifth yarzheit of Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler, k’’mz, the unforgettable Dean of our school. Speakers included renowned Roshei Yeshiva, R a b b i S h m u e l Kamenetsky, t’’yhka, and R a b b i E l y a Brudny, t’’yhka. 4 13

This day is dedicated to health education. Yeshiva Ketana students heard a Torah message by Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, Rabbi, Young Israel of Cleveland, followed by health information from medical doctors. An overall fitness class was arraigned as well as an introduction to martial arts. Students learned about the importance of proper hand washing and how to build a food pyramid. Healthy smoothies and rainbow snacking were added treats. Girls Elementary students heard a Torah message from Mrs. Shani Hefter, Principal, Girls Elementary Division; local doctors provided health information. A fitness class and dance class were held as well as an art activity. Students were reminded of proper hand washing techniques. The day ended with healthy snacks and delicious smoothies. Thank you to GoJo, Mustard Seed, Trader Joes, and our PTA for sponsoring this event. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HEALTH DAY Talmidim are engaged in a myriad of activities geared towards enhancing their path towards greater achievements in Judaic studies. A Kesser Chazzara Program promotes constant review of the Gemara learned in the classroom. Chavrusos and connections with members of Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev provide the bochurim with role models to emulate. The Yeshiva has instituted in-Shabbosim, enjoyable Motzei-Shabbos programs and a Cocoa Club that encourage unity and proper use of time. Also, this year, students arranged the Community Schach Project. In addition, talmidim continue their practice of bi-weekly visits to Montefiore and Menorah Park Center for Senior Living. GENERAL STUDIES The General Studies of the Elementary Division has secured a literacy specialist and math specialist to counsel teachers on the new math and reading curricula that the school has instituted this year. The school has hired an instructor and purchased Chrome books so that students can utilize computers in the classroom while others use the computer lab. This year, teachers attend monthly grade level meetings, called Professional Learning Centers, where all teachers on each level gather, collaborate, and set specific goals for students across grade level. Also new this year, students are tested in the Fall and Spring with the I-Ready testing program; a program that enables teachers to assess individual student needs in the area of reading, writing, and math. Besides its college level courses, in keeping with the national program to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Yavne students used CDs, shish kabob skewers, and rubber bands to build cars that converted elastic energy to kinetic energy. They also built rollercoasters for marbles using only pipe insulators and tape. They measured the gravitational potential energy, mechanical energy, and kinetic energy of the rollercoaster and calculated how must energy was lost in the process. The Elementary Division, under the direction of Dr. Yoel Schwartz and Mrs. Tehila Stelzer, has also adopted the Mindset philosophy developed by Dr. Carol Dwek of Stanford University. This educational philosophy believes that intelligence and talent are not fixed; they can be developed through hard work and dedication. Emphasis is placed on perseverance and resilience as attributes that should be recognized and developed; students may not understand a concept YET, but all students have the ability to succeed at their own pace. Yavne is bustling with activity. Students are learning diligently and improving their middos through a compendium of student-propelled programs. The GO has adopted a yearlong theme of l’chol zeman v’es, there is a time for everything. For instance, there is a time to fight conflicts and struggles. Conversely, there is a time to keep quiet and utilize the power of silence. Yavne’s Chessed Program helps local families navigate daily challenges. The Chesed Program’s theme is the Art of Giving, dedicating time and energy in an effective manner. The Mishmeres Program’s theme is DMV, learning the rules of safe speech and a Deeply Meaningful Chavrusa Program encouraging students to learn the laws of proper speech. Yavne held two successful Shabbatonim for Junior and High School students. Recently, students studying Psychology tested kindergarten students on their cognitive development using simple experiments like the fluidity of liquids and comparison of measurements. Students also joined hundreds of volunteers at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s annual Super Sunday Campaign for Jewish Needs. YAVNE HIGH SCHOOL 6 11

The annual highlight of first grade is the Chumash Party. Students performed songs related to parshas Bereishis and Rabbi Dessler presented each student with a treasured Sefer Bereishis. CHUMASH PARTIES What can be more exhilarating than watching young boys receiving their first Gemara… hovering over their seforim to learn how to decipher Rashi…intently absorbing their Rebbeim’s presentation of parsha stories every week…using the Smart Board to reinforce lessons about the vessels of the Beis Hamikdosh. This year a record number of forty-five first-grade students took part in the Chumash Mesiba, marking a milestone in their Jewish education. Many talmidim participate in the voluntary Cocoa Club morning learning group and in the Mishnayos enrichment program. The Hebrew Academy Boys Choir delighted an overflow crowd at the School’s Chanukah Delights evening. The environment in the Yeshiva Ketana is electric as students plug into the wonders of Yiddishkeit. YESHIVA KETANA VISITORS 1. Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky, Philadelphia Yeshiva 2. This award-winning division has added new classes to accommodate the growing number of children who enroll each year. Teachers are constantly learning new strategies such as how to become more intentional teachers and High Scope methodologies. Classrooms have become centers for creative teaching, hands-onprojects, social skills development, and lots of age-appropriate fun. EARLY CHILDHOOD The annual middos program this year deals with the art of friendship; how to be a friend, how to make friends, how to create an environment that promotes the well-being of all classmates, and how to increase peaceful relationships by compromise and good will. The walls are decorated with student-created posters that prove students have inculcated this program into their daily lives. One of the annual highlights remains the Mother/Daughter Melava Malkah in memory of Mrs. Beverly Koval, v”g, Students in each grade performed beautifully and shared a special time with their mothers.
