he Hebrew Academy of Cleveland celebrated its legacy and shared its vision for the future on Sunday, March 10th, when over 835 people gathered at Executive Caterers of Landerhaven in celebration of the Academy’s 76th anniversary. There was a special energy in the room as Roshei Yeshivah, Rabbanim, faculty, parents, grandparents, alumni, supporters, and community members, were present to support the Academy. The dinner began with a lovely reception, and guests were greeted with opening remarks by Rabbi Yitz Frank, Director of Agudath Israel of Ohio, and with some words by Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, Rav of the Young Israel of Greater Cleveland and member of the mosad’s Vaad Hachinuch. Speakers included Mr. Gary Gross, Board Chair of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel of the Hebrew Academy, and Dr. Louis Malcmacher, the President of the Hebrew Academy. One theme that was constant with every word spoken by every person; for 76 years the Academy has made sure that every Jewish child has access to a great education and the Academy will continue to do so for any child that comes through its doors. The Hebrew Academy Boys Choir, gave a stellar performance, under the direction of Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Mann, that was both moving and inspirational, and was followed by a beautiful video presentation, featuring the children of the Hebrew Academy. Watching the video presentations for the honorees of the night was particularly moving. Mr. Thomas Langer, recipient of the Alumnus Award, was enrolled at the Hebrew Academy in 1958, after his parents escaped the Communist regime. Mr. Jeffrey Zuckerman was awarded the Mendy Klein Community Service Award for his dedication in heart and soul to helping others in the community and keeping an open door policy in his home. This year, the dinner was especially emotional as the Academy held a special tribute to Mr. Mendy Klein, k”z, who was always unwavering in his devotion to the klal and whose relationship with the Academy was that of family. Coordinated by Rabbi Yitzchok Kahn, the Junior High School completed Shisha Sidrei Mishna and third grader, Sruli Klein, Mendy’s grandson, made the siyum. Mr. Yoni Klein and Mr. Nati Klein then recited kaddish, all in the zchus of Mendy, whose legacy will forever live on. The Klein family was presented with a special gift to commemorate Mendy’s love and affection for the Academy and the Cleveland community at large and Mr. Yoni Klein responded. T 2

Our award-winning Step Up to Quality Hebrew Academy Preschool is continuously growing! We are always working on achieving new heights. This year we had a record breaking enrollment of two hundred and twenty-fi ve children, who were nurtured by our talented and creative staff of over forty-fi ve loving teachers. Our staff attend workshops each year to gain further knowledge in Early Childhood Education, they share ideas and information with their colleagues, and work as a team to model language, social skills, and behaviors which they want their students to learn. Our motto is Chanoch lanaar al pi darko, Educate a child according to his way. Our teachers are dedicated to providing each child with appropriate and unique learning experiences to enable them to reach their highest potential, to take pride in being a Jew, to love learning Torah and doing mitzvos, and to gain many important life skills. This year, to provide the teachers with more resources, strategies, and ideas for teaching new concepts, we created a teacher lending library in our offi ce. The library is fi lled with teachers guides as well as children’s books which the teachers borrow to read to their students. To take care of our children’s gross motor skills in the winter, new bicycles were added for the children to ride in the gym during their recess when it’s too cold to go outside. As you enter our wing you will see the children’s work and creativity displayed in our hallways, and you will hear their beautiful voices davening, saying brochos, and singing parsha and Yom Tov songs. Upon glancing into our classrooms; one can see the children in action, learning, experiencing, sharing, making friends and, most importantly having fun and smiling! Early Childhood 6
This school year has been an incredible mix of learning, mastering, developing, experiencing, experimenting, creating, achieving, and building, and we had a fantastic time doing it! Learning Lamed Tes Melachos and putting on a fair, mastering our knowledge at the Spark Chidon, developing our middos with the Middos Program, experiencing learning through Project Based Learning, experimenting with different ideas and concepts to produce a great product, creating interactive exhibits, achieving and celebrating with siyumim at the end of the year, and building a brighter future through hard work, positivity, and passion! There is constant action with programs like Calendar Fun, water fi ltering, math escape rooms, Kahoot competitions, literature circles, fi tness competitions, and map makers! Our girls get it done! To observe the friendships, student to teacher interactions, and the overall energy is something to behold! We are so proud of these future leaders! Girls Elementary 7
Our boys have been busy learning, growing, and achieving! We are so proud of how much they have triumphed and accomplished! Our third and fi fth grades made Chumash siyumim after completing Bereishis and Shemos respectively. Our sixth graders put on an incredible Gedolim Fair and had a superb Color War! Grades 1 and 4 made a siyum on Tehillim and our fi fth and sixth graders made a cocoa club siyum! The second grade class did a beautiful job singing at Montefi ore Nursing Facility. The Ashreichem Program energized scores of talmidim at the end of the school year. Meanwhile, in General Studies, Project Based Learning is the tool we use to prepare students for academic, personal, and career success in the future! Learning comes alive; from creating student businesses to entry into a future “Making A Difference Wax Museum” based on future occupations; and from being cartographers of imaginary islands to city designers and electrical engineers of LED Town, students learned so much in the most fun, authentic, engaging and meaningful way possible! Yeshiva Ketana 8
The spirit and energy that fi ll the halls of Oakwood are contagious. You could see the love of learning and the work ethic these boys have when entering the building. You will always fi nd Rebbeim learning with students one on one, creating programs like The Five Week Excellence in Learning Program, and really toiling to achieve greatness! We’ve had the honor of having many guest speakers including: Rabbi Sholom Kamenetsky of Philadelphia Yeshiva, Rabbi Menachem Eichenstein of Yeshiva Dvar Torah in Yerushalayim, Rabbi Yosef Elefant of Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim, Rabbi Chaim Yehoshua Hoberman of Mesivta of Long Beach, Rabbi Dr. Akiva Tatz, and Dr. Chaim Presby, noted physicist and lecturer. In General Studies, the boys have been learning through the experience of problem solving, creating ideas, and fi nding solutions. From drones, atomic structures, real estate market studies, electrical engineering, to writing their own children’s books and visiting Kindergarten to read their works to the children! It has been a fantastic year of learning, laughing, and building friendships! Junior High School 9
Watching our girls grow this past year has been truly inspiring, rewarding, and moving. Our students tackled every project, initiative, and assignment with such fervor and enthusiasm! The Yavne iChoose program was a huge success, with girls choosing to put down the phone and put themselves fi rst and it was followed by an overnight trip! Another big focus for these young ladies is chessed with our weekly chessed program and our girls being Big Sisters for the Bigs and Littles Program and participating in the amazing end of year Color Run! Yavne is always a happening place between production, Chessed/ Mishmeres/G.O. Banquet, Lag B’aomer trip, and our innovative and comprehensive S.T.E.M Program! Our future infl uencers created mechanisms, commercials, and instruments, and designed parts to be printed on a 3D printer! We cannot wait to see what these ladies can cook up in the future! We are proud of our 2019 Beatrice Stone Yavne High School graduates; one hundred percent will continue their studies, almost all in Israel next year! Yavne High School 10
Due to dramatic growth and serious space constraints, the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland must expand to meet the needs of our school community. To maintain our growth and better accommodate the depth and breadth of our school’s mission, to educate a child according to his way, fundraising efforts are underway for a new educational complex which will house the Early Childhood and Boys Elementary divisions. The complex will be built on the grounds of the Academy’s Oakwood campus and feature state-of-the-art amenities. “During the past 76 years, the Academy has led and nourished the growth of the community and provided outstanding facilities,” stated Mr. Ivan Soclof, Past President of the Academy. “We will continue to meet the challenge by providing a cutting-edge education with state-of-the-art accommodations for our children and grandchildren...well into the future.” JOIN US IN THIS HISTORIC ENDEAVOR! • CREATE AN EVERLASTING LEGACY!
