The mul ple terrorist a acks in Eretz Yisrael this week are stark reminders of our fragility and
•••••• mo vates world Jewry towards a call for ac on. Is it appropriate to accept upon ourselves
something that would serve as a merit for ourselves, for our people and for the world?
APRIL 13-24
Once, in a discussion with the Telshe Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Chaim Stein, zt”l, regarding a series
Pesach Vacation of unfortunate tragedies and illnesses that had plagued world Jewry, I asked the Rosh Yeshiva
for an ini a ve that our community could accept upon itself as a Divine merit for mercy and
•••••• thereby bring peace into our communi es, and good health and happiness into our lives. A er
some thought, the Rosh Yeshiva suggested an ini a ve focusing on bein adam lachaveiro, to
7:33 improve our rela onships between one another and, in par cular, to be more cau ous with
regard to lashon hara, slander.

Per nent to our ini a ve, the commentaries discuss an integral connec on between the
parshios of Shemini and Tazria. Parshas Shemini delineates the laws of kashrus. Observant
Jews everywhere are cau ous in this regard as they share the belief that non‐kosher food
contaminates the neshama, the Jewish soul. Parshas Tazria addresses the consequences of
forbidden speech. Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, zt”l, founder of the Mussar movement, explains that
through this connec on the Torah teaches the profound direc ve that the same cau on used
to guard what enters one’s mouth must be matched with equal cau on regarding what
emanates from the mouth—thus, the severity of the sin of slander parallels that of ea ng
forbidden foods.

The word nega, afflic on, appears numerous mes in Parshas Tazria. Rabbi Leib Lopian, zt”l,
the Gateshead Rosh Yeshiva, comments that nega and oneg, delight, are wri en with the
same le ers of the Hebrew alphabet, differen ated only by the placement of the le er ayin
(meaning eye). Oneg (‫ )ענג‬is spelled with the ayin at the beginning, while nega (‫ )נגע‬is spelled
with the ayin at the end. Thus, it is truly the wise individual who immediately sees—
understands—his responsibili es and is careful to travel the pathways of righteousness. This
individual will ul mately find oneg, delight and sa sfac on in his life. His eye (ayin)—vision—
precedes his ac ons and thus he achieves success. Correspondingly, the individual who
ini ally fails to keep a watchful eye on his ac ons brings nega, afflic on, into his life and too
o en he does not realize—see—his mistake un l it is too late!

In a society that worships materialism and venerates honor, we must try that much harder to
resist influences and go against the societal grain. The manner with which we speak of others
defines us as individuals and as a people. When we are ready to recognize the strengths of
people and not their weaknesses; when we are ready to celebrate the success of others and
not their failings, then we have succeeded.

79th Scholarship Tribute Dinner

You had to be there to experience the incredible feeling, and
a capacity audience of 800 guests experienced it. The event
was the Academy’s 79th annual scholarship tribute but it was
held for the first time in the Freschl Auditorium and Immer-
man Gym at our new building. It was beautiful, elegant,
heartwarming and enjoyable. Tribute was paid to the
memory of Rebbetzin Miriam Dessler; the Alumnus Award
was presented to Mr. Henry Zieleniec; and Heshy and Sima
Neiman accepted the Mendy Klein Community Service

Award. Chaired by Dr. Louis
Malcmacher, attendees
were addressed by Rabbi
Boruch Hirschfeld, Mr. Dan
Zelman, Mr. Gary Gross and
Rabbi Simcha Dessler. The
HAC Boys Choir, under the
direction of Rabbi Shmuel
Yaakov Mann and Mr. Avi

Lampert, did a fantastic
job. A surprise musical trib-
ute to Rebbetzin Dessler was
tendered by HAC fathers
and sons: Avi and Tzvi Lam-
pert, Josh and Shimmy
Bookman, and Rabbi
Shmuel Yaakov and Meir
Mann.

all those who participated in the raffle cam-

Junior High School

On Sunday morning, the Junior High School talmidim were addressed by
Rabbi Shaul Dolinger, Rosh Yeshiva, Kiryat Chinuch Labonim in Ashdod, Eretz
Yisrael. Rabbi Dolinger, who was in Cleveland for our school’s dinner that
night, shared meshalim and stories with our boys which engaged and

intrigued them. He later offered an incentive
to any student who would summarize his
address on paper and many boys rose to
the challenge!
On Tuesday, we welcomed Dr. Boruch
Fertel, Academy parent and Director of
Emergency Medicine at Cleveland Clinic,
who spoke to the entire Junior High about
health, wellbeing, and responsible living.
We thank both speakers for sharing their
time with our boys.

Yisrael to reach a total of almost $7,000. This effort is a reflec on of

Kindergarten

Morah Rivky and Morah Tehilah’s class enjoyed a hands on activity of
writing words in shaving cream. The
kinderlach did a great job sounding out all
the words!
Three of Kindergarten classes enjoyed a
brachos party for finishing their brachos
chart.

Early Childhood

The children in Morah Feifer and Morah Gitti’s
class have been working all week decorating
their Kittels and aprons with fabric markers and
paint. They are so excited about their beautiful
projects and are looking forward to wearing
them for the Seder, IY”H. Morah Chani and
Morah Devorah’s kinderlach decorated pillows
and afikoman bags with paint stampers and
colorful gems. The children in Morah Naomi and Morah Rena’s class are working on
a Makkos Booklet where they learn each makkah in depth and then color a picture to
reinforce what they learned. In Morah Leah and Morah Rochel’s room the children
created Bedikas Chometz hats to wear while they help their parents search for chametz.
