arents, supporters, friends – and students! – enjoyed the Academy’s Virtual Event from the comfort of their homes! The smiling face of Academy President, Dr. Louis Malcmacher greeted participants with his trademark humor and comprehensive synopsis of current events in the Academy. Dr. Malcmacher updated participants on the exciting plans for our new campus. Construction is in full swing, with contractors clearing the land for our Yeshiva Ketana and Preschool Divisions. Special mention was made of Mr. Ivan Soclof, Past President of the Board, who lends his expertise to every phase of the building process. Thanks were extended to Vision 2020 Chairman, Mr. Amir Ja a, for his constant devotion to this project. Rabbi Elya Brudny, Rosh Yeshiva, Mir gave divrei bracha to the Academy. Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel, described the incredible e‡ ort – and heart – of teachers and students throughout the recent pandemic. Rabbi Dessler stated that it was remarkable to witness the unity and connectivity engendered by the interactions achieved through distance learning. A highlight of the program was renowned speaker, Rabbi Paysach Krohn who interviewed several principals, parents, and students in the format of a Fireside Chat. Rabbi Simcha Dessler shared how the aim of the school was, “What did every student need most to succeed?” Rabbi Yitzchok Kahn, S’gan Menahel, Junior High Division, and Mrs. Tzipporah Zelasko, Principal, Yavne High School, spoke about how they tried to engage students in interactive programs as much as possible. Parents Mr. Je rey Zuckerman and Mrs. Shoshie Klein told of how they were amazed at the school’s accomplishments. Students were involved through Zoom conferences, one-on-one calls by Rebbeim and teachers, and many interactive activities. Student Meir Leibowitz commented on how he now realized how much his Rebbe cared about him and what he learned. To quote his words, “Even when we were apart, we could still be together.” Student Rivky Spolter told how Yavne arranged many interactive activities so that, “All of us were engaged in the same activity and felt part of the school in the way that learning alone could not.” The Academy is blessed with sta‡ that is professional, loyal, and devoted. Mrs. Miriam Koval and Mrs. Chantal Modes were honored for twenty fi ve years of dedicated service to the Hebrew Academy. Rabbi Chaim Ellis, Rabbi and Mrs. Chanania Goldbaum, Mrs. Hadassah Kuto , Rabbi Avrohom Muken, Mrs. Nechama Kutner, Mrs. Fayga Nathan, Mrs. Elisheva Plaut, and Rabbi Avrohom Thav were recognized for fi fteen years of service to the Academy. The evening continued with “video on video” presentations to our honorees. The Dinner paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Danny Gottesman, an alumnus of the Academy, member of the Executive Board; Board President, Cleveland Community Mikvah; Board Member of Bikur Cholim; and a partner of Ulmer and Berne, LLP. Mr. Maury Litwack, recipient of the prestigious Alumnus Award is the Founder and Executive Director of TEACH, an initiative of the Orthodox Union and multi-state network responsible for funding yeshivos and day schools. Rabbi Hillel and Bina Drazin received the Mendy Klein Community Service Award for their many chesed endeavors and enthusiastic, longterm commitment to the greater Jewish community. The Boys Choir sang briefl y and popular singer Rabbi Baruch Levine appeared and sang together while in the background (thanks to Zoom technology) students held up posters showing their appreciation to their teachers. The evening ended on a high note. Members of the Hebrew Academy – administration, sta‡ , parents, students, alumni, and supporters – perceived a glimpse into the enthusiasm and excellence that exemplify all those involved with the Academy. 77TH SCHOLARSHIP TRIBUTE DINNER 2

Virtual classes began with the distribution of interactive Pesach activities, custom-made by diligent teachers. Even our youngest students created beautiful Hagaddos and learned all about this wonderful holiday. Post Pesach, students connected through Zoom conferences. Teachers taught aleph bais, parsha, mitzvos, shapes, and more. Children joined their teachers by fi lling in the many coloring pages, projects, and fun activities that were delivered to their homes. Shavuos was celebrated with a gala Sing-a-Long and Drive-by Challah Bake. Teachers were gifted with wine and cheesecakes while students delved into their weekly activity bags fi lled with hours of learning experiences and Shavuos treats. Two-year olds celebrated several Upsherin Zoom parties. They also learned all about the berachos for various foods when thoughtfully assembled food items were delivered to their homes. One class followed a recipe to prepare edible play dough and then was instructed on how to shape the dough into aleph bais letters. Three-year olds received mitzvah treasure boxes which they decorated according to their individual styles. They were instructed to fi ll these boxes with mitzvah notes and told that each note was a Kosel brick. Even at this young age they realized that their actions could be instrumental in building the Bais Hamikdash. The End-of-the-Year Drive Through featured a chance to reunite with teachers, videos, and treats. Students were greeted by their teachers and given bags fi lled with summer projects, photo albums, and prizes. On this hot day, ices were distributed to the children as Flower the Clown performed right outside the many car windows. ARLY CHILDHOOD 4

After Pesach, the Girls Elementary Division dived into Zoom mode. Some classes had students write on mini dry erase boards and share their answers with their classmates. The kindergarten classes created bulletin boards on Zoom. Teachers delivered projects and treats. Even writing was taught with sock puppets that students fashioned at home by following their teachers’ instructions. There was a Pirkei Avos program and a bi-weekly hookup to Israel for the Eretz Chemda Program. Many classes completed parshiyos and celebrated their siyumim with a new concept – Siyum in a Bag, treats and activities in lieu of actual attendance. Fifth grade girls completed learning Shiras Devorah and invited mothers and grandmothers to watch a video where students sang and danced to various parts of the song. To celebrate a siyum on Parshas Ki Sisa, girls played a Family Feud game on Zoom while enjoying treats. The sixth grade Bas Mitzvah Program became an enterprising adventure. Students learned about the emunah and bitachon of Miriam HaNeviah and were supplied with fl owerpots, soil, and seeds. This was to teach them that, “Hashem is always making things happen, sometimes below the surface.” The program also included a mixed media painting project and a challahbaking project. The concluding event of this program was an in-person class celebration under a large tent. Mothers and daughters received a bag of treats and watched a music video created by the students. On the last Monday of the year, students joined Mrs. Shira Goldbaum’s Zoom account for a wonderful video highlighting the year’s events. Tuesday, the sun came out right in time for everyone to enjoy a drive-through carnival fi lled with games and activities and sincere goodbyes from teachers and sta‡ . Flower the Clown entertained the cars waiting on line, and treat bags were distributed to all. IRLS ELEMENTARY 5

Learning never stops as illustrated by the continuous activity in the Yeshiva Ketana. Before Pesach there was a weekly parsha challenge, kriah from the Hagaddah, Yedios Klaliyos (S.L.A.M.), Masmidei HaSiyum, Mishna Rishona, and a program from the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation. After Pesach, school became a Zoom adventure with Rebbeim teaching and materials distributed to all the students. Despite challenges, there were plenty of siyumim. First graders fi nished Parshas Bereishis. Second graders fi nished Parshas Vayeira. Third graders fi nished Sefer Bereishis. Fourth graders completed Parshas Beshalach. Each siyum was celebrated with shared divrei Torah and treats. Many siyumim began with the Rebbe telling his students on Zoom that they are about to celebrate a milestone, but hope that before they do, they should go to their front door and return. At the door, the students found a package of treats personally prepared by the Rebbe. A sweet joint siyum was shared by fi rst and fourth graders who joined together to celebrate a siyum on Sefer Tehillim with drive-through music and prizes. The Yeshiva Ketana’s year ended with an incredible Zoom experience where talmidim listened to a story presented by former Academy Rebbe, Rabbi Benny Wielgus, followed by a visit with well-known singer, Benny Friedman. Each Rebbe and Morah organized a special end-of-the-year party for the boys congratulating them for all their e‡ orts on maintaining a consistent learning schedule. ESHIVA KETANA 6

We are proud of our Junior High talmidim who excelled in their learning even through these challenging times. Every evening the S’gan Menahel, Rabbi Yitzchok Kahn, called the boys with a chizuk message.. There was also a daily Shnayim Mikra challenge with questions to answer. Every week there was a special Shabbos program, Thursday night mishmor program, Erev Shabbos calls, and parent chizuk calls. The entire division enjoyed viewing results of the daily contest featuring photos of talmidim learning. The Rebbe/talmid relationship was strengthened by daily Zoom conferences. There were many phone calls made, and Rebbeim ascertained that talmidim maintained their level of learning. Talmidim learned with kollel members at the Academy’s Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev. Guest speakers included Rabbi Alexander Charlop, Rabbi, Zichron Chaim Congregation, Rabbi Moshe Tuvia Lie , Rabbi Raphael Mendlowitz, and Academy alumnus, Rabbi Yechiel Spero. The bar mitzvah celebrations of our talmidim did not go unnoticed. 25 cars paraded in front of the houses of these boys, getting as close as they could to deliver greetings and mazal tov wishes. Talmidim received Kiddush, matzah, and maror for their Pesach Sheni Program. The message was that there are second chances in life, and there is no reason to ever give up. A unique Gedolim project took place via distance technology. Students researched and authored books on their Gedolim and were instructed how to create woodcut portraits of their Gedolim. Other highlights included a siyum on Gemara Makkos. The celebrants were treated to a deluxe breakfast from the Bagel Shoppe. Also, talmidim and their fathers joined in learning as part of the Academy’s M’Dor L’Dor program. UNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 7

In the month of Nisan, students joined a worldwide Tehillim initative where Mrs. Tzipporah Zelasko inspired students to accept ohl malchus shamayim with joy. Rosh Chodesh Nisan featured a kumzitz for mothers and daughters. A school wide book club focused on the lessons of two major books: All for the Boss and Scent of Snowfl owers. Following Pesach vacation, students were treated to a Rosh Chodesh panel discussion on Tips to Thrive; Not just Survive. The Birthday Committee dropped o‡ co‡ ee from Grand Judaica on porches and had a virtual scavenger hunt. Chesed Heads created an elaborate Behind the Mask computer game that demonstrated how chesed begins at home. Seniors created a senior quilt to remember their journey through their high school years. The Shavuos Yom Iyun featured inspiration by Rabbi Simcha Dessler, songs by the Yavne choir, and a story by Rabbi Yoel Gold on the presence of Yad Hashem in every detail of one’s life. Before the event, each student received a small cheesecake and the ingredients to make sushi. The event concluded with a chef explaining how to properly prepare the sushi ingredients. Yavne Junior High earned a two-day Virtual Retreat. On the Thursday morning of the retreat, students picked up custom t-shirts, snacks and program details. A G.O. assembly on Zoom featured a slide show of all the varied activities that were held this year and was followed by a music, dance, exercise, and movement class. In the evening, students gathered (with social distancing safely in place) in small groups at the homes of their mechanchos for deluxe barbeques. On Friday morning, two guest speakers, sisters Kelli and Alya Kalaora, told the incredible story of their journey towards Yiddishkeit. The retreat concluded with an Erev Shabbos “Zoomzitz” led by Yavne alumna, Chanie Solomon. Yavne held its fi rst Zoom Awards Assembly. Awards were given for academic excellence, academic growth, citizenship, community service, art, and writing. Mrs. Amy Greenspan, who is retiring after 40 years of teaching in Yavne, received a beautifully bound book containing letters of appreciation from her many students. 11 AVNE HIGH SCHOOL 10

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION Graduates and their families – in safely distanced clusters - joined under a huge outdoor tent to listen to students’ refl ections and farewells to their principals and Rebbeim. The evening began with a siyum on Shisha Sidrei Mishna. Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel, and Rabbi Yitzchok Kahn, S’gan Menahel distributed diplomas. As each boy crossed the stage, Rabbi Kahn noted what impressed and inspired him most about each of the graduates. The boys received a tote bag with sweatshirts and gift certifi cates to local stores in lieu of their class trip. A special yearbook was assembled that contained divrei Torah from each student and messages from parents. The evening, which was live streamed to grandparents around the world so they could share the nachas, ended with a specially arranged fi reworks display. Students thought graduation was the fi nal event of the year, but their enterprising principal managed to arrange a last minute day trip. The day started with davening and a shiur and continued with a kayaking trip to Hiram, Ohio. The graduates will treasure these years where learning and close Rebbe/talmid bonds were forged and developed. The Rebbeim really missed their students when they considered all the past years when Rebbeim and students spent the night in learning. To show the students how much they cared, principals and Rebbeim organized a drive-by Shavuos celebration where students could refl ect on past achievements and revisit the joy of this holiday. The nationally renowned Uncle Moishy came to town– to our Siddur Party. Kindergartners were split into fi ve groups, and Uncle Moishy performed fi ve times so each group could equally enjoy this momentous occasion. Rabbi Simcha Dessler handed out siddurim to eager students in a large and beautiful tent as parents watched this milestone event.
