2022 July Academy in Action

2022 July Academy in Action

(continued on page 2 79th Scholarship Tribute Dinner 2022 t was with a sense of gratitude and amazement that this year’s Scholarship Tribute Dinner was held, for the first time, in the Freschl Auditorium and Immerman Gym at our new building. The event was beautiful, elegant, heartwarming and enjoyable. Tribute was paid to the memory of Rebbetzin Miriam Dessler; the Alumnus Award was presented to Mr. Henry Zieleniec; and Heshy and Sima Neiman accepted the Mendy Klein Community Service Award. Academy in Action I TAMMUZ 5782 / JULY 2022 Building Futures. Growing Worlds.

2 // Academy in Action (continued from page 1) Chaired by Dr. Louis Malcmacher, attendees were addressed by Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Mr. Dan Zelman, Mr. Gary Gross and Rabbi Simcha Dessler. The HAC Boys Choir, under the direction of Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Mann and Mr. Avi Lampert, did a fantastic job. A surprise musical tribute to Rebbetzin Dessler was tendered by HAC fathers and sons: Avi and Tzvi Lampert, Josh and Shimmy Bookman, and Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov and Meir Mann. The Dinner also paid tribute to veteran staff members who have served with distinction for 25 or 15 years: Mrs. Libby Feifer, Mrs. Rochel Lax, Mrs. Chumee Mann, and Mrs. Chava Sasha Blech, Mrs. Tova Chaya Levitansky, Mrs. Ruti Goldstein, and Miss Sima Schneider. Our appreciation is extended to all those who ensured the success of this memorable evening: dinner hosts, Josh and Daniella Botnick and Rabbi Menachem and Elana Tenenbaum; the finance office personnel, Mr. Moshe Greenberg and team; Mr. Yosef Aryeh Greenberger; and our faculty and parents who made the effort to be there together! 4 // Academy in Action Academy in Action Our youngest division is thriving in our new Oakwood Campus. They love the big classrooms, their own lunchroom, huge indoor and outdoor climbing areas, the sensory room, and the outdoor playground. Spring was a busy time as students, even after the many fantastic Pesach projects were taken home and extensively used by the children at the Pesach Seder. Shavuos flowers and many versions of Har Sinai were cut and colored. Graduations emphasized the theme of Hodu LaHashem Ki Tov; the Early Childhood Division experienced a year of growth and achievements due to the tremendous efforts of moros and the administration of the Academy. Early Childhood

Academy in Action // 5 Kindergarten The hands-on learning process continues in our vibrant kindergarten where the emphasis is on imparting knowledge and inculcating midos tovos in the students. Social skills are emphasized as all five classes filled their bucket filler charts with lots of notes received for being good friends and considering the feelings of others. Student haggadahs provided children with the tools to partake actively in the Pesach Seder. Har Sinai table centerpieces helped give students an appreciation for the Torah that was given to all of us. Meanwhile, aleph bais was mastered. Spring brought the annual caterpillar metamorphosis spectacle as students observed and documented their very own caterpillars and watched them emerge as beautiful butterflies. Perhaps this activity is a fitting metaphor for this Division where our youngest students “morph” into true and proud Jewish stars! This metamorphosis was again highlighted during the many siddur parties when students joyously received their first siddurim.

6 // Academy in Action The atmosphere was electric as students learned and progressed in the new campus. Succos may be well over, but that did not stop fourth graders from creating Sukkah Fairs in conjunction with their mastery of Maseches Sukkah. Fifth graders were winners of the National Shomrei Halashon raffle. Sixth graders completed Perek Hakones in Gemara and celebrated with fathers and grandfathers who joined on a Sunday morning to learn b’chavrusa and share a deluxe breakfast. Talmidim once again researched and presented their gedolim projects and promised to work on lessons they had learned from their respective gedolim. Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rav, Ahavas Yisroel, and Rosh Kollel, Kollel Torah L.I.F.E. spoke to sixth graders and introduced a new tefillah initiative, the Shnayim Mikra program. During an interactive presentation about Eretz Yisrael, talmidim took a virtual tour of the land and its mekomos hakedoshim. The Rosh Chodesh Sivan assembly included a yedios kelalios song teaching about the measurements used in the times of the Mishna and Gemara plus the previous yedios kelalios songs learned throughout the year. A state-of-the-art Innovation Lab complements the General Studies curriculum. The Hebrew Academy has partnered with the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) to continue supporting efforts to provide quality STEM programming. The Drone Olympics, hosted by our school, was a one-day event that challenged students to navigate a drone through an intricate obstacle course. One team was actually able to complete the entire obstacle course and successfully land the drone onto the final landing pad! Yeshiva Ketana

Academy in Action // 7 Junior High School A new initiative, encouraged by Roshei Yeshiva and principals, was the first annual Bnei Aliya Asifa, hosted by the Cleveland community. This initiative involved seventh grades across three Midwest regions; talmidim met at the Kalahari Convention Center in Sandusky for an inspiring and fun filled program of Torah, chizuk, aliya, and introspection. Students learned the laws of shmittah and heard the inspiring story of Doron Tueg, an Israel farmer who is observing shmittah for the first time in his life. In an effort to teach students how to present their divrei Torah, a speech contest featured tips by Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel. The event was judged by Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, Rav, Young Israel of Greater Cleveland; Rabbi Nissim Abrin, Rav, Bais Avrohom, and Rabbi Moshe Marcovich, Director of Development. The Junior High boys showcased their innovative and technological skills at an Evening of Inspiration held during the winter at the Oakwood Campus. Students presented a large variety of products that were created using the techniques of project-based learning. Project-based learning continued throughout the year with much elaboration of previous topics. At the final display students showed the results of their study of the animals mentioned in the Torah, woodworking, and learning how to play the guitar, drums and piano.

8 // Academy in Action Girls Elementary Creative methods of teaching skills is one of the hallmarks of this Division. Younger classes learned aleph beis script by decorating their own cookies with their Hebrew names in their best handwriting. Other students used the days of Sefiras HaOmer to fill special “Thank You Hashem” notebooks with paragraphs on hakaras hatov. A siyum on part of Sefer Yehoshua took its cue from the Navi and featured a Chinese Auction that brought home the idea of the goral that Yehoshua drew in the perakim they learned. A live presentation from Eretz Yisrael gave students the opportunity to connect and learn about the country. And, as always, the Annual Lamed Tes Melachos Fair dazzled parents with its thorough presentation of the work that is forbidden on Shabbos. STEM projects abound. For example, students built a Revolutionary War Escape Room that involved cracking codes, detective finds, and much team work. The highlight of the year was Showcase Day, May 24. Students presented project-based displays. Grade One focused on careers; Grade Two presented playground design ideas; Grade Three focused on healthy choices/living; Grade Four created Ohio’s Futuristic Museum; Grade Five researched future careers that make a difference; and Grade Six created islands in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Academy in Action // 9 The second semester started off with a bang. Two sold-out performances enjoyed the singing, dancing, drama, and amazing props of this year’s production. Over one hundred girls earned an overnight trip for completing the Annual Tech Challenge. Student activities included a Machane Yavne Talent Show; Counting the Miles Markers for Jr. High; All Our Stars Program from the Chesed Committee; a program called G.I.F.T., Gaining Inspiration for Tefillah; the first formal debate by the Yavne Debate Team; Lag B’Omer at Camp Whitewood; and a basketball team trip to meet Bais Yaakov of Cincinnati, share divrei Torah, sportsmanship, and achdus. Color War teams were Bein Adam LaMakom and Bein Adam L’chavero and taught the importance of both aspects of avodas Hashem. In partnership with Yavne, representatives from the national office of the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) set up a Drone Olympics for the ninth grade STEM students and taught the girls SCRATCH coding. Eighth Graders, who travelled to Columbus for their graduation trip, visited the Holocaust Memorial and Mohican State Park. The highlight of their trip, arranged by Rabbi Yitz Frank, Executive Director, Agudath Israel of Ohio was a special tour of many chambers in the Senate usually closed to the public. The Kollel is constantly seeking to create beneficial partnerships with talmidim. This year the Kollel formed two new opportunities with the Boys Junior High. Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev members formed a chabura on Hilchos Shabbos led by Rabbi Eliyahu Machlis on Erev Shabbos, and a second program on Shabbos afternoon that features 45-minute chavrusahs led by Rabbi Ahron Simcha Baum; both initiatives held at Congregation Zichron Chaim in Beachwood, Ohio. Dial-A-Rebbe, the brainchild of Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev’s Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Resnick, is a national resource for students to gain access to a Rebbi as needed for homework or support – anytime. The innovative program was featured recently in the national Mishpacha and Ami periodicals. The Academy’s school-based Kollel provides our Junior High and High School talmidim with chavrusos and mentors throughout the year. 12 // Academy in Action Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev The Norman Family Hachnosas Sefer Torah The Mendy and Ita Klein Campus and its Simon and Rose Mandel Building were full of simcha, singing and excitement as a new Sefer Torah was welcomed into the Academy. The first and second grade boys each made a special flag for the simcha. The Yeshiva Ketana and the Boys Junior High School joined the procession, and it will be etched in their minds for many years to come. When the Sefer Torah entered the new building, it was greeted by the other Sifrei Torah and continued to the Freschl Auditorium for more dancing. In a beautiful display of achdus and kavod HaTorah, each grade danced around their Rabbeim as they held the Sifrei Torah and were able to experience the simcha personally. We are humbled that Ms. Deena Norman, the mother of our own Rabbi Moshe Marcovich and grandmother of multiple Academy families, has chosen to donate the Sefer Torah to the Academy in memory of her parents z”l in such a meaningful way.

Academy in Action // 13 We are always honored and delighted by the many important speakers and guests that visit our school. The venerated Rabbi Shmuel Avigdor Feivelson of Tzefas visited our school. Rabbi Elya Brudny, Rosh Yeshiva, Mirrer Yeshiva and member, Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah spoke of the magnificence and scope of the Hebrew Academy and urged the boys to remember, “who you are and what you are.” Rabbi Yaakov Bender, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva Darchei Torah, Far Rockaway addressed the talmidim of the Yeshiva Ketana and Junior High School. He spoke to the boys about the importance of Torah in their lives and the importance of kindness to peers, and spent some extra time with the Junior High. Rabbi Lipa Geldwirth, Rav, Khal Kol Torah, Brooklyn, New York, marbitz Torah, Yeshiva Torah Temimah spoke with the Junior High talmidim. 14 // Academy in Action Yavne Students Win National Award in Engineering Three students, competing against 1,000 students and four hundred projects, presented their project at the National CIJE Innovation Day at the American Dream Mall, New Jersey and brought home a trophy for second place in Engineering Design. A professional development evening featured nationally acclaimed Larry Thompson, author of Roadmap to Responsibility and Give ‘em Five. Thompson’s approach is to change traditional discipline models into ones that nurture a responsible climate and more responsible students. In conjunction with the Academy’s professional development program, the New York-based Consortium of Jewish Education brought a cadre of national principals to be trained by Mr. Thompson and by the Academy. Long a national training ground for aspiring educators, the Academy was selected as the host school to train principals from Detroit, Silver Springs, Philadelphia, South Bend, Waterbury, Houston, Montreal, Calgary and Santiago, Chile. On Tuesday morning, the visiting educators were addressed by Rabbi Simcha Dessler, and delegates networked with Academy principals, toured the school’s new Klein Campus, observed best practices and visited vibrant classrooms. This was an opportune time to connect with Jewish educators around the world. Professional Development and Principal Training The Mesibas Siddur, always a highly emotional occasion, was extra special this year due to the participation of five generations of the Katz/Weiser/Roth family. Mrs. Charlotte Roth, great-great grandmother of Noah Katz, showed Rabbi Dessler the numbers on her arm and expressed that she is a survivor of Auschwitz. Mrs. Roth pointed to her great great grandson and said, “This child is my trophy.” Mrs. Roth’s presence at the event was an inspiring expression of Am Yisroel Chai and the continuity of our mesorah against all odds. M’Dor L’Dor

Academy in Action // 15 The theme of our annual auction was the uniqueness of air balloons that fly peacefully through the air. Piloted by dedicated teachers and staff, our students are given the tools to navigate life’s many pathways. This fabulous virtual fundraiser was possible due to the tireless efforts of those who ensured the success of the Virtual Auction: Mrs. Chani Berner, Mrs. Sara Farkas, Mrs. Beth Kaliff, Mrs. Chaya Rochel Korn, Mrs. Tammy Post, Mrs. Debbie Schlesinger and Mrs. Yehudis Weiss. HAC Chinese Auction After-school enrichment programs enable students to expand on their interests and talents. Afterschool Mishnayos and the Hebrew Academy Boys Choir have been longstanding constants in this area. This year other programs that were offered were hockey for the boys; s w i m m i n g , drama, and junior ballet for the girls; plus a variety of art classes for the boys and girls divisions. After-school Enrichment Bigs and Littles Program Over 70 matches of Academy Bigs and Littles bonded this year. Bigs were given leadership training so that the year would be beneficial and successful. Students met with their “big sisters” once a week for a fun activity or just to get together and schmooze. On March 20th, the Bigs and Littles Mentoring Program had an event at Cre8 Sparks, a new art studio in Beachwood. Ten Bigs, students of Yavne High School, were awarded the Presidential Volunteer Award for working above and beyond the assigned hours.

Many relatives and friends gathered to celebrate the milestone Yavne graduation in the Beatrice Stone Yavne High School.
