his year the Hebrew Academy celebrates 78 years of excellence; 78 years of educating over 7,000 alumni to become leaders and dedicated laymen in Jewish communities around the globe. The Academy has been blessed with continuing success due to its dedicated veteran sta plus a steady infl ux of young Rebbeim and teachers who keep the school innovative and vibrant. The Academy’s parent body has also contributed greatly to form ongoing dialogue and supportive relationships that benefi t each student. This year the Academy has been additionally blessed with the advancement of its longstanding vision, the construction of a state-of-the art educational complex to house our growing Early Childhood and Boys Elementary divisions. In 1943, in the midst of the terrible confl agration of the Holocaust, Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler, k’’mz together with Telshe Roshei Yeshiva and dedicated laymen established the fi rst full-day Jewish day school in Cleveland that was to become the fl agship school for day schools across the country. Decades passed, and the school grew exponentially to its present enrollment of 1,250 students. Despite its growth and the overwhelming costs involved, the Academy has never wavered from its longstanding position to accept all students, regardless of fi nancial consideration. It is for this reason that the Scholarship Campaign is so vital to the Academy’s budget. Through the funds received from its annual campaign, the Academy upholds its legacy of providing an outstanding education for each and every student. The Scholarship Tribute Virtual Event is scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 7, 2021. The Virtual Event will pay tribute to David and Sarah Farkas. The Living Memorial Award will be presented to Dr. Sam and Ruthie Salamon. Dr. Rachel M. Garber will receive the Mendy Klein Community Service Award. Dr. Sam and Ruthie Salamon - THE LIVING MEMORIAL AWARD IN TRIBUTE TO: David and Sara Farkas Dr. Rachel M. Garber - THE MENDY KLEIN COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD 3 David S. Farkas received his rabbinical ordination from Ner Israel Rabbinical College in 1999, his law degree from the University of Maryland in 2001, and worked in private practice before joining FirstEnergy Corp. in 2011, where he currently serves as Senior Corporate Counsel. He has published two books of original insights on the Bible and Midrash Rabbah, and his many contributions to scholarship have appeared in diverse forums such as the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Tradition, Jewish Bible Quarterly, and elsewhere. A popular and entertaining speaker, David also lectures on topics of Jewish interest to both local and out-of-state audiences. David is active in numerous community causes, often involved in behind-the-scenes e orts on behalf of community institutions, or individuals experiencing di culties with observance in their workplace. He is a long-time board member of the Hebrew Academy, a member of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland Human Resource Development committee, and a past board member of Congregation Zichron Chaim. Sara is an alumna of the Academy’s Beatrice Stone Yavne High School, and attended Darchei Binah seminary in Jerusalem before graduating Magna Cum Laude from Yeshiva University. She worked as an Operations Analyst for the Lehman Bros. International Desk before her marriage. Upon her return to Cleveland, Sara developed a freelance bookkeeping practice which she still maintains. Sara is the co-founder of the popular Academy PTA Fun Run, and for many years the driving force and organizer of the Academy’s Chinese Auction. She currently serves on the board of Young Israel of Greater Cleveland and on the Academy’s Budget committee. David and Sara are the proud parents of fi ve boys, all Academy graduates or students. With a passion for “The World That Was” and a commitment to Jewish education, Sam and Ruthie Salamon are staunch supporters of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland and its Living Memorial Program. Dr. Salamon is a longtime Academy board member, and serves on the board of Congregation Zichron Chaim in Beachwood. Ruthie Salamon is a very active, involved grandmother and has been organizing women’s Torah learning for decades. Dr. Salamon is a graduate of Yeshiva Rabbi Jacob Joseph in Manhattan, Yeshiva University High School for boys, Columbia College, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He founded the Cataract Eye Center of Cleveland, with locations throughout greater Cleveland. Growing up in the Bronx to parents and a grandmother who survived the Holocaust, Ruthie Gelb Salamon attended Bais Yaakov of Kelly Street, and Breuer’s Seminary for two years. She became a Registered Nurse with the encouragement of her Bais Yaakov principal, Dr. Ullman. Ruthie met her husband while working at Einstein Hospital in the Bronx. While visiting her friends, Avi and Devorah Freund in Cleveland, she was privileged to meet Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler k”mz who showed her around the Hebrew Academy. The Salamons enthusiastically moved their young family to Cleveland in 1985 for the Academy and the community. Ruthie was a substitute school nurse at the Academy for a few years. The Salamons have had a profound impact upon our community. Their three children are Academy alumni and their Cleveland grandchildren are Academy students. When Covid-19 threatened to further close schools across the nation, Dr. Rachel Garber joined with the Hebrew Academy leadership to create a safe place to learn and work, facilitating safe re-entry of children back to school. She continues to devote her days and nights for our school community. Rachel M. Garber, MD, FAAP was raised in Dallas, Texas and attended University of Texas followed by residency at Cleveland’s Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Her interest in medical education and clinical care led to her appointment to the faculty of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics where she rose to direct the General Pediatrics Ambulatory Department. In her drive to develop more personal service to the Jewish community, in 1997 she created University Suburban Pediatrics, her own independent general pediatrics practice. She is an assistant clinical professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, participates as a medical preceptor for pediatrics for the CWRU Physician Assistant program and the Yale Physician Assistant program, and maintains privileges at both University Hospitals and Hillcrest Hospitals. Her a liation with both systems enables her to welcome newborns and direct their medical care from Day 1 through childhood and adolescence at her busy outpatient practice. Her longstanding commitment to community and school health led to her contributions as medical advisor and consultant for The Hebrew Academy, Yeshiva Derech Hatorah, Torah Nursery, YABI Nursery, Laurel School, Bikur Cholim of Cleveland, Camp STEP, Camp Agudah Midwest, Camp Nageela Midwest, and Camp Shai. She has arranged the N’shei Women’s Shabbos shiurim for years and provides medical guidance for kallahs prior to their wedding. She is married to Feivel Schwartz and is the proud mother of six children and grandmother of ten. Dr. Garber writes, “I have been impressed with the value of HAC’s incredible in-person education system that is tailored to allow each child to reach their full potential.” OLLEL ATERES NOCHUM ZEV
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SIMCHA DESSLER, Menahel l Educational Director When our school leadership planned the current school year, we were aware that we were on the cusp of entering a world of uncertainty. With a strong commitment to in-person school and a heartfelt prayer on our lips, the Academy implemented a plethora of the recommended guidelines and precautions to keep our sta and students safe during the current pandemic. With a record enrollment of 1,254 students, the Academy began its 78th school year like none other in its history. We opened school with new resources and concepts, including a COVID planner, medical guidance, social distancing, masks, desk dividers, sanitization stations, temp checks, electrostatic disinfection, and extra day porters. Thanks to the generosity of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, modular classrooms were secured to alleviate overcrowding due to the astounding growth of our institution. The Academy has invested and continues to invest enormous time, e ort, fi nances and heart to maintain in person school amid the COVID challenge. The phrase “it takes a village to raise a child” is more true today than ever before. We could never accomplish this much without the incredible partnership of our dedicated parents who have been exceedingly enthusiastic and supportive; our gracious benefactors who continue to invest in Jewish education; our indefatigable team of menahalim, menahalos and administrators who toil tirelessly to provide academic excellence; our Rabbeim, moros, teachers, interventionists and support sta -- the true heroes and heroines—who work harder than ever to achieve our mission, goals and objectives; our technology team who prepared and distributed almost 1,000 chrome books to support curriculum and remote learning; our food services who prepare over 1,400 daily lunches and 650 family food boxes every other week; and last, but certainly not least, our medical guidance, primarily Dr. Rachel Garber, who has been a driving force and a major contributor to our success in providing in-person school. Day and night, literally, she selfl essly provides guidance, advice…and inspiration. The commitment of all involved is remarkable. Why do we do it? We do it for the children! The Midrash teaches that when the Almighty prepared to present the Torah to Klal Yisrael, the question was asked: Who will be the guarantors to ensure the continuity of the Torah throughout the ages? Only when it was suggested that the children will be the guarantors, that the adults will teach the children and the youth will carry the mantle of responsibility to transmit our heritage to subsequent generations, did Hashem agree to present the sacred Torah to Klal Yisrael. More than anything else, we invest in a Jewish future. Parents and sta have risen to the occasion in incredible ways thereby enabling the Academy to maintain its high standards of learning even in these unprecedented times. We, and they, are ever cognizant that the children in the Academy classrooms of today are both the guarantors and leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for your role in the Academy Family! A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SIMCHA DESSLER, Menahel l Educational Director 4
Yeshiva Ketana Teachers strive to make this division, “the happiest place on earth.” Our youngest students are smiling and playing together, singing and learning about the parsha and yomim tovim. Projects are colored and cut, pasted and assembled. Children even stomped on grapes to make their own grape juice as they learned about the berachos. O cials who visited to assess this division are always impressed and pleased to grant it Step-Up-To-Quality star rating. ARLY CHILDHOOD 5
The entire division is working hard to keep the spirit of simcha and dedication to Torah alive during these challenging times. Students launched a campaign to raise funds for Matan B’Sayser, a charity that benefi ts local residents. Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rav, Congregation Ahavas Yisroel and Rosh Kollel, Torah L.I.F.E. gives a weekly shiur to the talmidim. Night Seder continues to be a wonderful opportunity for the bachurim to learn with the Kollel members. Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Rabbi Yitzchak Kahn, Rabbi Alexander Charlop, and Rabbi Menachem Meisels gave words of chizuk, encouragement at various programs and events. Chanuka was celebrated with an in-school mesiba, replete with music, a catered meal, and divrei Torah. In General Studies, project-based learning activities included mini courses in woodworking, stained glass renditions of the Shevatim, and in-depth research of the Gedolim that lived in the historical periods being studied. UNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 11 In this essential year, students are learning the skills that will enable them to succeed in fi rst grade. A hands-on approach combines learning with interactive activities. Students created an edible timeline to learn their numbers. The concept of elections was taught through a vote on school snacks. Hachnasas orchim was taught by crafting beautiful beaded hangers for guests to use to hang up their coats. Berachos parties included the preparation of food. Students created a bulletin board of buckets which are fi lled when they show respect for one another and demonstrate positive behaviors. Crowns are worn when learning aleph bais. Each child delighted when Rabbi Simcha Dessler showed them an actual Sefer Torah with the letters of their names. Learning is relevant, personal, and creative. INDERGARTEN 6
7 Excitement is mounting as the Academy is heavily involved in the construction of its new building at the Oakwood Campus. The building will house the Early Childhood and Boys Elementary School Divisions and is adjacent to the Kindergarten Wing, Junior High School, Kollel, Financial O ces and Yeshiva of Cleveland. Mr. Ivan Soclof, Immediate Past President of the Academy has once again taken a leadership role in the expansion of the physical facilities of the school which was necessitated by the astounding growth of the school in recent years. Mr. Soclof expressed that the construction is on schedule for occupancy for the 2021/22 academic year. He talks with visible pride of what this will accomplish for a new generation of sta and students. At a recent Board of Directors meeting, Mr. Soclof lauded the leadership of Mr. Amir Ja a, Vice President of the Academy who has invested signifi cant time and e ort in his active role as Chairman of the school’s Vision 2020 Project. Mr. Ja a stated: “For 78 years the Academy has been a national trendsetter in Jewish education. This remarkable project enables the community’s children, grandchildren and beyond to benefi t from a stellar education in a physical environment truly conducive to excellence. We continue to count upon the generosity of the broader community to bring this historical project from dream to reality and from conception to fruition.” Mr. Harlan Cohen and Mr. Eric J. Greenberg of Harlan+Associates, who have worked closely with architect Ron Kluchin, share some details: All trades continue progressing at an incredible pace and all the major utility services have been connected to the new building. Weather permitting, all structural masonry should wrap up this month, with steel and roofi ng to quickly follow. Exterior masonry veneer progresses with a majority of the Gymnasium and Auditorium having been completed. In the Elementary School classroom wings, structural masonry walls are completed, roof trusses and steel deck are complete and the roofi ng work should be fi nished this month. Overall – the project is moving quickly – and is on schedule! “We are so grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from many parents, board members and supporters. This is a testament to the devotion of so many to our transformational Vision 2020 campaign and the importance of having a state of the art facility for decades to come. We are almost at our goal and we would like to call on our friends to help us in our e orts to achieve our fundraising needs,” said Rabbi Eli Dessler, Financial Director. Great value is placed on the Chumash Mesibah held each year when fi rst graders, after mastering the aleph beis and basic reading, are presented with their fi rst Chumash. This year, the event was held in Congregation Shomre Shabbos’ outdoor tent – a di erent venue but defi nitely as momentous an occasion for our precious talmidim. Fifth and sixth grade boys are now housed in a special modular unit to ensure proper social distancing. Special programs continue. The BEAM program emphasizing extra learning of Chumash, Mishnayos, and Gemara plus a Tzedakah Campaign is dedicated this year to the memory of long-term Rebbe, Rabbi Calman Fishman, k’’mz. A memorable Zoom Conference allowed Rav Reuven Feinstein, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva of Staten Island, the opportunity to speak with sixth grade students. Talmidim are involved in Yedios Klalios and an ongoing Parsha Challenge. The sixth grade Invention Convention and Island Project are integrating science skills and social studies to teach students project-based learning. Meanwhile, classroom math centers provide interactive math activities in a student-based environment. 4 Students are learning the meaning behind our daily tefi llos, prayers that connect us to the Kingship of Hashem – a King we can visit on a daily basis. This year’s theme is hakaras hatov, noticing the good around us and the kindness that others do for us. Students acknowledged their gratitude towards teachers and sta by writing touching notes that expressed their recognition of the work the sta does. Students are now concentrating on becoming aware and expressing their gratitude for all their parents’ e orts. Creativity continues during General Studies when students “swat” correct sums on the board, experiment on forming “clouds” in science, and approach math problems by fi guring out how best to seat 22 people on a rectangular table. A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SIMCHA DESSLER, Menahel l Educational Director Students were treated to a G.O. Breakfast that emphasized l’gadel ul’chazek l’kol, to grow and become strong from all situations. A Smile Program spread good cheer and encouraged a positive attitude. On Chanukah students celebrated the triumph of the few over the many who were able to bring light to the world. Students committed to looking out for others, making sure to include all students in their activities, and never being “gelty” of excluding others. Students split the many chapters of Tehillim so that the Book of Tehillim could be completed on a daily basis. The “Hearts Ablaze Tefi llah Program” ended with a successful Paint and Ponder activity. Meanwhile, in General Studies, students in the Physics class competed in the annual Egg Drop; the science class grew bacteria in Petri dishes to demonstrate the e ectiveness of masks; and the Public Speaking class made presentations expressing their gratitude to administrators and maintenance sta .
