NOVEMBER 23 Widely recognized as an architect and vanguard of Torah education in America, Rabbi Aharon
Kotler zt”l was vigilant and forceful, yet revered and admired by all. His profound impact
Jr. High Parent Teacher changed the face of Torah Jewry. In a eulogy at his funeral, Rabbi Elazar M. Shach, zt”l, Rosh
Conferences Yeshiva of Ponevez, called attention to a development in this week’s parsha.
6:30-10:00
Yaakov Avinu prepared for his impending confrontation with his brother, Esav, in three distinct
•••••• manners: prayer, gifts, and battle. It would seem that prayer and gifts could be tendered by
virtually anyone. How does one, especially one not engaged in military, prepare for battle? Rav
NOVEMBER 25 Shach explained that with regard to tendering gifts the Torah states: Vayikach min habah
beyado mincha, He took from that which had come in his hand, a tribute to Esav, his brother
Thanksgiving (32,14). That is with regard to gifts, but regarding battle one does not have the luxury to take
what he has in his hand. Rather, in preparation for battle one must know when to attack and
Boys Divisions Only when to retract, when to make that clarion call and when to maintain silence. Rav Aharon
9:00 School Start for Grades 1-4 Kotler knew this well. With remarkable insight and incredible wisdom he knew when to be the
valiant fighter for Torah and when to maintain a status quo. Steeped in the Talmud and its
7:45 Minyan for Grades 5-6 lessons, he was a visionary builder who shaped the Torah world and a gentle giant who knew
7:50 M’Dor l’Dor Jr. High how to choose battles and when to fight them.
12:30 Dismissal for Grade 1-6
2:10 Dismissal for Jr. High Perhaps we can borrow a page from Yaakov’s strategy and find its application in the world of
twenty-first century parenting. Yaakov addressed the challenge at hand with a three-pronged
•••••• strategy: prayer, gifts and battle. Effective parenting, too, requires fervent tefilah, incentives
toward motivation, and carefully chosen battles – as there are many.

Proper chinuch dictates that we teach children right from wrong; that we imbue them with the
All Divisions Regular Start foundations of middos tovos and principles of yiras Shamayim. The challenge is that we are
K-6 Dismissal at 12:00 living in difficult times, in a world replete with inconsistencies and grey areas, and in a society
where parents are often unsure where, when, and if to draw the line.
Jr. High Dismissal at 12:30
Yavne Dismissal at 12:00 Every parent has witnessed one or more of the familiar development stages in the lives of their
children, from toddlers to teens, where they presented as being overly assertive, inflexible or
•••••• unreasonable. And every parent has considered if the battle of the moment was worth the fight.
While it may not always work, we might take a step back from our natural reactions and ask
DECEMBER 1 ourselves: What message does my child wish to communicate or convey? Does the behavior
conform or conflict with our family’s moral compass? Will there be a ripple effect? Can we live
Chanukah Delights at 6:45 p.m. with it? What impact, if any, will this behavior have on the child in the future?

4:44 Parents must also realize, and be comforted by this fact, that it is perfectly normal for battles to
emerge and occur in the best of families and among the most exemplary parents. We just need
to choose those battles wisely. Moreover, it is okay to lose the battle as long as we remain
focused to win the war.

Junior High School

Last Friday, the talmidim of Junior High School were happy to meet, greet, and
be addressed by two renowned visitors. Rabbi Paysach Krohn, noted lecturer
and author of the “Magid” series joined us for davening and addressed the

division after davening.
Rabbi Krohn provided a fresh
perspective about concentration and
connection. Later, on the
same day, Rabbi Nachman
Levovitz, a Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim, encouraged the
talmidim to be thoughtful and positive about their learning and
shemiras hamitzvos.

Please note that Parent Teacher conferences for the Junior High division
are scheduled for this coming Tuesday evening. We look forward to
greeting you!

Yeshiva Ketana

Following his inspirational speech to grades 4-6, Rabbi Paysach Krohn
helped reward a group of boys who were deserving of accolades. In
conjunction with the recent Hachnasas Sefer Torah, the Klein family
purchased beautiful leather shtenders for our fifth and sixth graders who

daven in the school’s daily
minyan. When there was a
technical delay in production,
many boys offered to delay the receipt of their shtenders so others can
receive them earlier. The Klein family graciously rewarded them with gift
cards and Rabbi Krohn, who had just spoke about the power of giving, was
visibly impressed with the middos
of our boys!

Mazel tov to Dr. and Mrs. Michael
Shapiro on the upsherin of Naftali
which was celebrated recently in
Rabbi Eiserman’s first grade class. May they always have much nachas from him!

Top Shachris attendance winners in the sixth grade (includes proper davening
and decorum): Chaim Alevsky, Yehonatan Bensoussan, Meir Simcha Burgess,
Eliyahu Cohn, Efrayim Finegold, Avrohom Freedman, Zevy Joseph, Aviezer Kirsch,
Yonah Koval, Tzvi Lampert, Yitzchok Lebovics, Yaakov Ribiat, Avrohom Yitzchok Rossman, Gideon Salamon, Mordechai
Samowitz, Avrohom Spector, Elazar Steinfeld, Yehuda Aryeh Thav and Moshe Weimer. These boys will be treated to a slice
of pizza or fries for their admirable efforts. Other treats will be distributed to the remaining boys for their attendance, as
well.

Yavne High School

Mrs. Chen’s 8th grade Lashon class enjoying their fresh homemade
doughnuts with their own custom fillings – as a culmination to the Cha-
nukah themed unit they just learned.

General Studies

Mrs. Vale and Mr. Chollet have continued our integrated learning of
world history this week with the 9th grade. Mrs. Vale explained the
impact the Ottoman Empire had on the Jewish communities after the

expulsion from Spain in 1492. Because the Turks
welcomed the Jews, Tzofas became a huge Torah
center for Kaballah and Halacha impacting our lives
until today.

Basketball Season are begun! Ms. Sorah Chana Ye-
ganeh has returned to coach our basketball team
with the help of Ms. Esther Richman. The 24 girls are developing their skills and strategies to prepare for competitive
games after winter break.

Girls Elementary

All of our 4th grade girls Chanukah
are busy learning and
reviewing their Chanukah
facts in exciting Chanukah
centers. They are playing
Bingo, Memory, sorting
games, and even working
to get a lock box open;
all the while becoming
experts!

General Studies

Mrs. Reinhardt’s Science class has been hands on looking at forces and motion!
Between making wind blown rockets and playing hot wheels, the girls are becoming
quite capable at putting things in motion!

Kindergarten

Chanukah is in the air! All our classes are very busy making
beautiful Chanukah projects and learning all about Chanukah.

Morah Katz and Morah Orit’s
hid oil bottles around the
classroom. The kinderlach
looked all over the oil till they
found the shemen zayis zoch.
In the afternoon the classes
learned the letter U and our
classes all made umbrellas with candy canes.

Early Childhood

The spirit of Chanukah is definitely here in our Early Childhood division! Recent-
ly, the children in all our classes decorated Rosh Chodesh hats. Chanukah music
played on our p.a. system and the kinderlach gathered in the hallways, singing
and dancing. Some classes even brought their musical instruments with them.
Morah Rivky and Morah Rochel gave out dreidels and the Chanukah festivities
and preparations began.

We enjoy listening to the sweet voices of our
kinderlach singing their Chanukah songs as they
are working on their Chanukah projects, putting
together menoros, painting Chanukah pictures, spinning dreidels, and practicing the
brachos to recite for menorah lighting. Even our k’tan-taners are jumping around spin-
ning like dreidles, and hopping around as they sing “latkala latkala hop in the pan”.
In conjunction with this week’s parsha, our three-year-old kinderlach learned about the
importance of davening. Each child received a “child friendly” laminated siddur. The
children decorated them with gems and are so excited to bring them home and to be
keeping it by their bed to say Mode Ani in the morning and Shema at night!
