Chadashos 6.2.23

Chadashos 6.2.23

8:36 The use of cell phones has become a fact of life. Individuals around the world feel its impact – both the positive and the negative – upon their quality of life. My own cell phone once inspired me to reflect upon one of Jewish life's great opportunities. I had just concluded Shemoneh Esrei when suddenly the vibration of the cell phone indicated an incoming message. Glancing at the display screen immediately after davening, I was surprised to see the shouting words "Good bye", an indication that the battery had expired and the phone had lost its power. I immediately reflected upon an ironic connection (or disconnection, as it were). The fact that the battery expired and the phone shut down precisely as I concluded my personal tefilos seemed an obvious reminder that just as a battery's power enables us to communicate until the last possible moment of its life, so, too, does Shemoneh Esrei provide the incredible opportunity to communicate with Hashem -- to converse and connect, to plead and beseech and present our myriad needs – until the last syllable is uttered and the prayer ends. But is our ability to daven to Hashem, to develop a personal relationship, largely taken for granted? In this week's parsha, the Torah tells us v'ish es kadoshav lo yihyu, a man's holiness shall be his (5,10). Much like a spectacular investment opportunity in the world of commerce, the time we spend engaged in tefilah is a huge investment for our children and ourselves, for our extended families and Klal Yisrael. Rabbi Matisyohu Salomon, Mashgiach of Beth Medrash Govoha, once shared the story of an average student at the Gateshead Yeshiva who consistently landed the absolute brightest chavrusah, study partner, in the yeshiva. Observers wondered how he succeeded in accomplishing this until once, on the first day of the zman, semester, someone overheard a phone conversation wherein he told his mother that she no longer need to recite Tehillim for him as he had succeeded in obtaining a chavrusah of choice. The efficacy of a mother’s heartfelt prayers is further expressed in the following incident: After years of successful learning, an individual once sought the counsel of the Chazon Ish because he experienced a diminished feeling of satisfaction in his learning. The Chazon Ish blessed him, but commented that this individual still lacked the tefilos of his mother during hadlakos neiros, candle lighting, prior to Shabbos. Yet none of this should surprise us! It is well known that when a parent approached the Brisker Rav, zt"l, for a brachah that her children succeed in their chinuch, the Brisker Rav responded that it is not the brachah that produces the desired results in chinuch, rather it is Tehillim und treren, the recitation of Tehillim and the outpouring of tears, which effect hatzlacha. Such is the power of prayer! Do we take advantage of this opportunity? Have a wonderful Shabbos! | | Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev The wives of Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev were inspired by Yavne High School mechaneches, Mrs. Miriam Barkin on the topic of chashivus haTorah. Just in time for Shavuos, Mrs. Barkin spoke of the incredible zechusim that the women have in their unique roles. The Kollel thanks Mrs. Barkin for sharing her time and inspiration, and as well, Mrs. Pessie Leff for hosting the gathering in her home. Junior High School On Tuesday, most of our Junior High boys gathered in the Beis Medrash, together with our Kollel members, to watch part of the live stream of the levaya of the venerable Rav Gershon Edelstein, zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevez and one of the gedolei hador. In the words of seventh grader, Avraham Lancry who watched the livestream: “ It is really sad that the world lost such a gadol”. May we all be inspired to take on something small to help fill the void! Prior to Shavuos, Rabbi Resnick’s 8th graders celebrated the completion of the first perek of Meseches Gittin with a siyum. The class also visited and were addressed by Rabbi Dovid Goldberg, Rosh Yeshiva, Telshe Yeshiva and also enjoyed recreation at a park on the water where they played on sand volleyball courts. The experience was rounded out with an enjoyable barbecue. Our school once again went national (and viral) the week of Shavuos with the following text and accompanying video which were included in Rabbi Yisroel Besser’s Meaningful Minute: “The 8th graders at The Hebrew Academy of Cleveland are learning Meseches Gittin. An innovative and encouraging Rebbi arranged for a different one of the young men to deliver the Daf Yomi shiur at Zichron Chaim… The audience is also getting the zechus of building future magidei shiur!” We are quite proud of the junior magidei shiur: Yosef Chaim Admon, Yossi Dessler, Eli Boruch Elias, Moshe Friedner, Nachi Koyfman and Naftali Roffman. Yasher koach to Rabbi Chaim Sturman and his eighth grade talmidim for this wonderful kiddush Hashem!

| | Yeshiva Ketana Mazel tov to Rabbi Janowski's class on finishing Parshas Chayei Sarah! Pictured below is Rabbi Boim telling the boys an amazing story while two boys give out soda and nosh for the siyum. Nachi Neuman shared a dvar Torah with his classmates at their siyum of Parshas Yisro. The 5th and 6th grades were hard at work taking bechinos for the upcoming Ashreichem event. General Studies Our team has learned that when we raise the bar of expectations, the boys respond with impressive results. Our General Studies program rests on the driving principle of making learning engaging through projects that promotes student inquiry each and every day. The more outlets we design that demonstrates content mastery, the higher student engagement and the better the results. The 1st and 2nd grade teaching teams invited parents to see the results of this process. Our 1st graders shared their knowledge of animals and our 2nd grade team learned about natural disasters and world geography. The beauty and power of Hashem’s world was highlighted throughout the process. Thank you foremost to our teachers since the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers. Thank you to (Grade 1) Mrs. Rina Radcliffe, Mrs. Amanda Rashid, Ms. Sarah Schwartz; (Grade 2) Mrs. Smadar Chafetz, Ms. Kelly Jones, Mrs. Shoshana Mizrachi, and Ms. Esther Schwartz.

| | Yavne High School Senior fundraisers, headed by the dedicated Yehudit Netanel and Aviva Shyken, pulled off their last successful event for the year. In a creative auction, students bid for surprise “gifts” from the different teachers. From breakfast parties to school privileges, the girls were excited with their prizes. A particular moment of nachas was observing the sincere joy of the tenth graders when they won a night class in the home of Mrs. Vale – a testament both to the girls and the teacher and the love of learning in the Yavne air! Chesed heads closed the year with an enjoyable activity connected to their beautiful theme of the year “Making Waves”. We are proud of our chesed heads whose beautiful middos truly exemplify all they promoted this year. General Studies Yavne High School is proud to announce that our 9th grade STEM students have won two incredible awards from the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) Innovation Day STEM Competition. On May 18, the students participated in a Zoom competition with other Bais Yaakov schools across the country, with one winner chosen. Yitty Cohen, Malky Gutman, and Aura Nahon took the prize for their invention, called D.O.F., a smoke alarm that not only emits a sound and a light but also opens a door when it senses smoke. On May 23rd, Devora Bernstein, Rina Bulua, Shira Katz, Michal Kutoff, Chayala Maimon and Rochella Strulowitz traveled to the American Dream Mall in New Jersey to compete with 36 other schools and 412 unique inventions. Yavne High School walked away with the First Place win in the Engineering for Children category for Rock-A –Baby, a device our students created that hooks to a stroller and, using a noise sensor, begins to gently rock the stroller when a baby emits a cry. Beyond the win, the students were able to interact with girls from like-minded Bais Yaakov schools, see other inventions and become further inspired. Every student in the STEM class is a winner! They all successfully completed the project and presented to a panel of judges. In addition to learning the coding necessary to program the Arduino to react properly to various stimuli, the students also needed to build a working prototype using TinkerCad and a 3D printer, create an offline PowerPoint “website” to promote their product, and a display board explaining their process, flow chart, code, and research. It is a testament to the commitment of our school community, the administration, and the students to upholding our values and our mesora while also striving for high academic achievement. Thank you to Mrs. Elene Feigenbaum for her perseverance, expertise and guidance throughout the year. Thank you to Miss Altose for her guidance, tips, and support of our STEM students in the classroom. Thank you also to Rabbi E. Dessler, Rabbi S. Dessler, and Mrs. Zelasko for their support and encouragement to provide this chance to let our girls shine! We invite parents and the community to view their presentations on June 6 at 7:30 pm in the Yavne auditorium.

| | Kindergarten Today marked the first of our Siddur Party celebrations. Congratulations and mazel tov to the students in Morah Modes and Morah Mindy’s class for a job well done and an adorable performance! We look forward to sharing some of the photos next week. Special thanks to the Moskovitz Family for donating the siddurim אהרן בן אליעזר אליהו נ”לע , HAC alumnus, Mr. Eddie Moskovitz, z”l. Girls Elementary We were so excited to welcome our students back after a beautiful and uplifting yom tov. Here are some highlights from the girls: “Every Shavuos my father takes out his Har Sinai rock for all of us to see.” “On Shavous I went to shul and listened to the Aseres HaDibros.” “I helped my grandmother create beautiful bouquets of flowers to decorate the house for yom tov.” The girls in Mrs. Schneider's second grade enjoyed singing all the yom tov songs from their Shavous packet. Mrs. Stoll's class amazed us with a meaningful song, making the words of Megillas Rus come alive. The girls not only enjoyed learning this song but practiced their Hebrew skills as well. Morah Zuckerman's first grade learned that Hebrew words can be different in rabim and rabos and have been practicing changing words from singular to plural. There is also a beautiful chelkei haguf bulletin board hanging in their classroom and the girls learned a special Hebrew song, thanking Hashem for all their healthy body. Mazel tov to Morah Freedman's fifth grade on the completion of Parashas Beshalach. The girls celebrated with a special siyum at Grand Coffee. General Studies After studying the fundamentals of Economics such as save/spend, need/wants and goods/services, Mrs. Rossman’s second grade students took their learning to the store! The students applied these concepts plus they enjoyed the hands-on Math practice.
