“A People Survives As Long As It Transmits Its Heritage From One Generation To The Next”
Chartered by the State of Ohio, the Academy provides an intensive Judaic and General Studies curriculum from early childhood through high school. The Academy is constantly searching out innovative programs and securing professional staff to service the needs of our diverse population so that the potential of every child can be nurtured and developed. In its seven decades of existence, the Academy has educated over 7000 students. Its graduates have assumed leadership positions – in virtually all walks of life – in communities across the globe. All students at the Academy receive the same excellent education regardless of fi nancial considerations. It is for this reason that the Scholarship Campaign is so vital to the Academy’s budget. Through the funds received from our annual campaign, the Academy can uphold its legacy of educational excellence for all students. This year’s Scholarship Campaign Chairs are Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Reuven Dessler, Mr. and Mrs. Amir Jaffa, and Mr. and Mrs. Mendy Klein. The Scholarship Campaign goal is $2,172,000. The Scholarship Tribute Dinner, to be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017, will pay tribute to Nathan and Sylvia Pollack and Rabbi A. Leib Scheinbaum. For reservations and journal ads, please e-mail [email protected] or call 216-382-3300 ext.360. M’DOR L’DOR AWARD Nathan and Sylvia Pollack Through an extraordinary relationship with the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland that has spanned four generations over sixty years, a tribute to Nathan and Sylvia Pollack refl ects the beauty of our mesorah and the continuity of our people. Nathan and Sylvia Pollack, both Academy alumni, were nurtured by Holocaust survivors, who were not merely survivors, but selfl ess builders and passionate leaders who taught by example. They transmitted their cherished legacy to their children, while planting the seeds of a spiritual landscape for subsequent generations. Nathan’s parents, Michael and Rose Pollack z”l, and Sylvia’s parents, Louis and Lilly Feig z”l, were early benefactors of the Academy and builders of virtually every facet of Jewish life in our community. Louis Feig was also an ever dedicated president of the Academy. In their quiet but dignifi ed manner, Nathan and Sylvia have been longtime active supporters of the Hebrew Academy, Bikur Cholim, Matan B’Sayser, Cleveland Gemach and many other philanthropic causes. They have imbued within their children a deep sense of commitment to character integrity coupled with communal activism and leadership. Their children, Adam, David and Jeffrey, are Academy alumni who continue the family’s tradition, and eight of their grandchildren are current Academy students. The enduring legacy of the Pollack family is a testament to the vibrancy of our people, m’dor l’dor, from generation to generation, and serves as an inspiration to an entire community. HARBOTZAS TORAH AWARD Rabbi A. Leib Scheinbaum A musmach of Telshe Yeshiva, Rabbi A. Leib Scheinbaum came to the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland in 1980, after serving four years in Phoenix, Arizona as founding principal of Yeshivat Ohr Hamidbar. During his tenure at the Academy, he has held both academic and administrative positions. As founding Director of Camp S.T.E.P., he guided the camp to become the premier day camp program in the Midwest. A prolifi c author, Rabbi Scheinbaum has published the Peninim Al HaTorah series which has, over the past 26 years, become a staple in thousands of homes throughout the world. Twenty-two volumes have been published in book form. His historical volumes, The World That Was: America and The World That Was: Ashkenaz, have been lauded by students and scholars alike. Eclectic in his harbotzas Torah, Rabbi Scheinbaum is a fi rm believer in the infi nite value of every Jewish soul. To this end, his infl uence extends to all areas of the Jewish spectrum. He has conducted a Torah studies class in Canton, Ohio, which has fostered increased Jewish consciousness and developed strong personal relationships. In his role as Jewish Chaplain in several correctional institutions, he has counseled hundreds of Jewish men and women. He attributes his success to the strong support of his family, and the encouragement of his colleagues and administrators at the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. SEVENTY-FOURTH HAC SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN 2
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN: VISION 2020 The Academy’s growth in enrollment – topping at over 1,070 students, including hundreds of second and third generation Academy students and scores of families that relocated to Cleveland primarily because of the Academy – has resulted in serious space constraints at the school’s current facilities. As we approach the year 2020, our vision is to create a trend-setting environment that will provide the innovative Academy experience and promote our long-time goal of excellence in education. Building upon the foundations of the past, our children will be benefi ciaries of an education for life – and a promising future. Chaired by Mr. Amir Jaffa, the Capital Campaign plan will enable us to accommodate our explosive growth in enrollment and provide unique opportunities unlike any other of its type in the region. A jewel is about to transform Cleveland’s Jewish community and beyond. Phase 1 of the Capital Campaign includes the purchase of the former Oakwood Country Club and land and the renovation of the clubhouse. Phase 2 of the Capital Campaign includes the building of the new educational complex housing the Preschool and Boys Elementary School. The complex will be built in a beautiful park-like setting on the grounds of the Oakwood campus and feature state-of-the-art amenities, including a beis medresh, aquatic center, media center, gymnasium, indoor play area and Holocaust Memorial Gardens. Join us in this historic endeavor by participating in our exciting expansion of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. A wide range of dedication opportunities are available. Create an everlasting legacy through your donation. Please call (216) 382-3300 ext. 362 for further information. Over 400 community members, rabbonim, leaders, and parents joined together to celebrate the inauguration of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland’s Oakwood Campus on Sunday, November 20th. The event was an excellent opportunity for the community to see and appreciate Phase 1 of a monumental project that, with siyata d”Shmaya, will be a jewel in our community. The audience was addressed by Dr. Louis Malcmacher, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Rabbi Zev Busel, Rabbi Eli Dessler, Rabbi Yissochar Fishman, and Mr. Stephen Hoffman, President of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. Mr. Hoffman expressed his appreciation of the Hebrew Academy, his long-standing ties with the institution, and his enthusiasm to be part of such a momentous occasion. “Nothing will top this in my memory,” Hoffman said, “to see the Oakwood property transformed like this.” Mr. Ivan Soclof received a surprise award for his years of dedication to the Hebrew Academy, presented by Rabbi Eli Dessler, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, and Dr. Louis Malcmacher. In addition, students participated in an inspiring siyum of the entire shisha sidrei mishnah in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. HAC Parents, Rabbi Moshe Dovid Choueka and Mr. Yosef Aryeh Greenberger, sang a beautiful rendition of Shehechiyanu and provided musical accompaniment, respectively. The morning concluded with a reception of elegant refreshments, chaired by Mrs. Sara Farkas, Mrs. Shoshi Klein and Mrs. Frumi Pollack, and guided tours of the Oakwood building. 1. YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL AND KOLLEL The Yeshiva High School is benefi tting greatly from the various amenities available at the new Oakwood Campus. Students enjoy the beautiful beis medresh, classrooms, science and computer labs, lunchroom, and gym facilities on a daily basis. A leibidig Simchas Bais Hashoeiva set the tone for the new year and new campus. The Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev appreciates its new home at the Oakwood beis medresh, where Kollel members continue to supplement our strong limudei kodesh program and serve as mentors to our talmidim, both in and outside the classroom. Kollel initiatives designed for the talmidim include a comprehensive bekiyus program, daily halacha shiur, Question of the Week, and a student-delivered Dvar Torah program. The Junior High participates in monthly visits to Montefi ore and Menorah Park as part of the Legacy Heritage/Better Together intergenerational program, as well as in a Mishnayos Cocoa Club. The M’Dor L’Dor Father & Son learning program continues to be a very successful monthly event, as does the Kesser Chazzara program where students receive raffl e tickets for extra learning. The junior high has been enjoying weekly Oneg Shabbos in the homes of Kollel members in University Heights and Beachwood, as well as a Friday night program for all divisions led by Rabbi Fishman in Cleveland Heights. In addition to a regular Motzei Shabbos program, the High School has a new dinner and gym program on Wednesday nights. They also took their fi rst overnight trip to Pittsburgh in December, spending an inspiring Shabbos with the Kollel and enjoying various activities in the area. Both divisions celebrated Chanukah with very exciting mesibos, both at the homes of their Rebbeim and at the Oakwood Campus. 7
Yavne students have had a jam-packed fi rst half of the year, fi lled with various stimulating curricular and extra-curricular activities, including: a Yomim Noraim Yom Iyun, school Melave Malka, Shabbaton, Rosh Chodesh activities, visits to local nursing homes, Chessed, Chanukah Chagigah and the Mechaneches program. Junior and Senior G.O., led by our capable student leaders, continue to provide exciting special programs as well as leadership opportunities for the Yavne student body. The spotlight is on STEM this year in General Studies. The Yavne STEM initiative, in association with CIJE, enables students to focus on more hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math curricular endeavors. Students are learning computer coding as well as making plans to make robots. Earlier in the year, the Environmental Science class took a trip to the Cleveland Metroparks Watershed Stewardship Center and the Physics class had an exciting – and messy Egg Drop Competition. 9 From the Chumash Mesiba to the Haschalas Gemara, learning Torah at the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland is always a celebration. So many extra-curricular initiatives enhance our strong limudei kodesh curriculum. Programs including Yedios Klalios, Brachos, BEAM (Be A Mentch), RAYS (Respect and Yiras Shamayim), voluntary Cocoa Club and after-school Mishnayos Enrichment, Kosel Interactive Video Conference, Eretz Chemda Program, and the Parsha Challenge excite our students to apply their learning to everyday life. A new lunchroom program has proven to be successful in engaging students in bentching out loud and other daily initiatives to make lunch time productive. In addition, students participated in many fascinating Living Legacy Programs, including shofar making and an interactive olive oil demonstration, which add an experiential quality to their learning of the yomim tovim. YESHIVA KETANA
10 1 The theme of the annual middos program this year is “Be a Mentch”, focusing on inculcating our students with the values of responsibility, self-control, and sensitivity. Projects and assemblies run throughout the year to emphasize this theme. Our fi rst graders received their Chumashim earlier in the year, signaling their foray into formal learning of Chumash. Students have also enjoyed many special events this year, including the Living Legacy shofar making and olive oil demonstrations, the Eretz Chemda program bi-monthly interactive lessons teaching the mitzvos of Eretz Yisrael, the interactive Kosel Video Conference, siyumim, Chanukah musical package activity, pre mid-winter ice skating, and of course, the Mother Daughter Melave Malka and musical extravaganza at Young Israel of Greater Cleveland. GIRLS ELEMENTARY
11 The General Studies division at Taylor Road is bustling with many stimulating learning initiatives designed to both make learning exciting and meet the needs of all our learners. Kindergarteners utilize the Waterford phonics software and 1st through 3rd grade students take advantage of the Pearson SuccessMaker software, both adopted through the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education. In addition, the Fundations phonics program has been expanded through 2nd grade. We are proud to introduce a Homework Club for girls, a new enrichment program for grades 1 through 6, and a new STEM program. Special activities and initiatives include a Reader’s Theatre Event, human graphing math program, community guest speakers enrichment program, Writer’s Workshop celebration, Health Day for boys and girls, 4th through 6th grade Graphic Short Story Contest, and the project-based learning Boat Launch for 6th grade boys and girls. The General Studies division continues to make individualized instruction a priority, keeping in mind the strengths, weaknesses, talents and interests of our students. Flexible groupings, based on both student level and interest, are emphasized throughout the subjects. ELEMENTARY GENERAL STUDIES
