“A People Survives As Long As It Transmits Its Heritage From One Generation To The Next”

Beis Chinuch Horav Dessler/Hebrew Academy of Cleveland held its 74th annual Scholarship Dinner on Sunday, March 19th. Almost 700 guests joined to celebrate the accomplishments of the Hebrew Academy, support the school, and recognize the esteemed honorees. Grandparents and long-time supporters Nathan and Sylvia Pollack received the M’Dor L’Dor Award and Rabbi A. Leib Scheinbaum, author and faculty member, received the Harbotzas Torah Award. In his State of the School address, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel, recounted the growth of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, with enrollment surpassing 1,000 students, and emphasized the school’s commitment to excellence in chinuch. “May I humbly thank you all,” Rabbi Dessler said,“and may I express the bracha tendered by none other than Moshe Rabeinu, the leader of Klal Yisrael, in this week’s parsha: Yehi ratzon shetishre Shechinah b’maaseh yadeinu, May the Almighty’s Presence rest in the work of our hands, as we build a stronger school, a more vibrant community, a more robust Klal Yisrael – and most importantly a promising Jewish future… for our children and yours and for the next generation and beyond.” The audience was addressed by Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, member of the Vaad Hachinuch of the Hebrew Academy, David Adler, executive committee member of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, and Dr. Louis Malcmacher, president of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. PRESCHOOL GRADUATIONS YAVNE GRADUATION OAKWOOD 8TH GRADE GRADUATION 4

This past spring, the Academy launched our newly re-designed hac1.org website. Our new website showcases the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland in an improved format and serves as an effective resource of information for both current and prospective parents as well as the community at large. The website incorporates many suggestions that we have received from our staff and parents. The site has been wellreceived by our HAC parents, with the Parents Corner including all necessary forms and a syncable calendar as some noted favorite features. The site also includes updated news and announcements, video and photo galleries, current Peninim, Chadashos, and weekly fliers, and detailed information about each of our school divisions. Academy campaign information and donation forms can also be accessed in the Support HAC section. Visit www.hac1.org. NEW HAC WEBSITE! CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE The Hebrew Academy is continuing Phase One of the Capital Campaign with our recent approval by the Cleveland Heights Planning Commission to add six new classrooms on the ground level of the Oakwood clubhouse. These classrooms will house the 125 kindergartners for the incoming 2017-2018 school year, an increase from the 92 students in Kindergarten this past year. The self contained kindergarten unit will have dedicated offices, intervention centers, cafeteria, bathrooms and indoor and outdoor play areas. Fundraising efforts continue for the new educational complex which will house the Early Childhood and Boys Elementary divisions. A wide range of dedication opportunities are still available. Create an everlasting legacy through your partnership. 5 Please call (216) 382-3300 ext. 360 for further information.

EARLY CHILDHOOD 6 No wonder registration for our award-winning Early Childhood Division is larger than ever before. Pass by our preschool classrooms and you will hear and see hands-on learning that is fun and engaging, day in and day out. Purim was a big celebration of singing and dancing, with a Purim Chagiga for each age group featuring Shu-shu the Clown. For Pesach, students made interactive haggados and an array of projects for the seder, as well as hosting their very own model seder with their teachers. In honor of Yom Haatzmaut, our children took pretend trips to Israel on “airplanes”, made passports, and attended an assembly where they learned about Israel through pictures and video. A unit on the mitzvah of loving our fellow neighbor in honor of the sefira period and preparing for Shavuos with Har Sinai cupcakes, dairy placemats and presents for mothers and fathers rounded out the yom tov educational experience. The year culminated with our Fours’ Preschool Graduation, featuring our oldest students in costume and song as they celebrated this special milestone with their families.

7 1 The Girls Elementary Division continues to inspire our students with motivating activities related to Torah learning and living. From Rosh Chodesh Adar celebrations to matzah baking with the Living Legacy Foundation, students enjoy hands-on experiences to celebrate the yamim tovim. The Eretz Chemda video conferencing program continued with sessions twice a month for the 6th grade. Students learned about the special mitzvos that are specific to Eretz Yisrael through video clips, beautiful worksheets, and a question and answer sessions straight from Yerushalayim. In honor of Yom Haatzmaut, 4th through 6th grade students listened to Mrs. Chaya Newman, former Clevelander, author, and lecturer who currently lives in Israel, about living in Eretz Yisrael. And to celebrate Lag B’omer, 6th grade girls ran a carnival for grades 1 through 5, with each booth relating to the yearly theme of “Being a Mentsch.” To end the year, the 6th grade girls ran a Chinese Auction for the younger grades and had a special trip and brunch in celebration of completing their years at the Taylor Road campus. On the last day of school, all students were treated to a video presentation of the highlights of the school year, starring our dedicated teachers and their very capable students. GIRLS ELEMENTARY

The end of the school year brings many opportunities to celebrate in the Yeshiva Ketana. The division had major siyumim this year, with 1st grade completing Parshas Bereishis or Sefer Tehillim, 3rd grade completing Sefer Bereishis and 5th grade completing Sefer Shemos. In June, the 6th grade participated in the annual Gedolim Fair. Students researched a great Torah scholar and presented fascinating tri-folds filled with information and photographs for parents and family members to enjoy. The BEAM (Be a Mentsch) Learning Initiative, run by Rabbi Shraga Weimer, had a culminating banquet in June celebrating all the extra Chumash, Gemara, and Mishnayos that the boys in grades 3 through 6 have learned as part of this wonderful program. The banquet featured a Chinese Auction where students could use the tickets they had earned all year. A mini raffle was held in May. Students always look forward to the end-of-year trips at the Yeshiva Ketana. Grades 1 and 2 had a special outing to the JCC Park and grades 3 through 6 went on the annual Fun n’ Stuff trip. A big yasher koach to our rebbeim and teachers who tirelessly invest so much in our children and enable them to share in their ahavas haTorah. YESHIVA KETANA 8

9 There is so much learning and development to showcase in the Elementary General Studies Department. Kindergarten kicked off Writer’s Workshop and has been busy discovering through center-based instruction, motivating manipulatives and multi-sensory activities. 1st grade girls had a cumulative carnival in FUNdations, our phonics program, with word games and word creations. Through a unit integrating science and literature, 1st graders also created motion stations via data collection and hands-on trials as they studied force, motion and energy. 2nd grade enjoyed using a reading notebook to highlight comprehension and literary skills. Teachers worked closely with a reading coach to implement the new FUNdations in 2nd grade classrooms. In addition, our math coach worked with teachers to cultivate a hands-on approach to math throughout the year. 3rd graders learned about plant life cycles, adaptations and environment, becoming botanists while creating a new plant species. And 4th graders became experts on Ohio, creating a new museum depicting important people, places, events and resources which were featured at our Ohio State Fair. Utilizing research skills and creativity, our 5th graders designed a “Making a Difference” Wax Museum with the boys depicting people who have made a difference and the girls featuring various career choices. Another Project Based Learning experience called the “Invention Convention” had our 6th graders as inventors displaying solutions to common, and some less common, problems of today. We are proud of the efforts our staff has taken this year to ensure meaningful, creative and long-lasting learning for our students. ELEMENTARY GENERAL STUDIES

YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL Students continued to make progress in their learning, taking bechinos, making siyumim and learning together with members of the Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev, the Academy’s school-based kollel. It is beautiful to see the accomplishments of our talmidim from one year to the next, thanks to the tremendous efforts of our devoted rebbeim. The members of Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev continue to open their hearts and homes to our students for learning, mentoring, onegs, or Shabbos meals. A successful winter Motzei Shabbos program was held as well. Our annual Lag B’Omer event and bonfire proved to be a huge success at its new location, the new Oakwood campus. Finally, our well-attended M’Dor L’Dor Father/Son Learning Program celebrated the year with a special closing session, including a beautiful breakfast and awards ceremony. In General Studies, the 8th grade Science classes performed egg drops to better understand force, gravity and other laws of physics. In addition, they created marble rollercoasters out of pipe insulation to illustrate the laws of motion. As the year wrapped up, students finished Ohio state exams and end of the year projects, followed by finals. 10

11 In the Judaic Studies department, some new curricular initiatives were instituted to benefit our student body. We now offer an optional early morning advanced Ramban class as well as a third track for 7th and 8th grade Lashon to best accommodate the various Hebrew language levels of our students. This semester, our mechanchos ran lunch and learn sessions for their students who are interested in pursuing different topics in Judaism in depth. The end of the year topped off with an inspiring annual Pre-Shavuos Leil Iyun on the topic of “The Legacy of Rus: Mother of Royalty.” Mrs. Devorah Goldstein of Bamboo Cradle fame was the featured speaker and shared her famous story to a fascinated audience. Spring had students very busy with Ohio State exams. After exams, the 11th grade began an in-depth Holocaust Studies course. 11th and 12th grade Physics students went to Cedar Point on a very exciting field trip to calculate how roller coasters and other rides use physics principals in action. The Seniors took a trip to Columbus to attend the School Choice Rally in support of EdChoice which benefits so many of our HAC families. They took a tour of the Ohio Statehouse and met with representatives. At the Engineering Fair, the 9th grade featured electronic machines which they designed and programmed themselves. Health Day turned out to be a great success, with speakers ranging a Binah Magazine columnist to a Cleveland Clinic pediatrician to a nutritionist, addressing internals vs. externals, healthy body image, and nutrition. G.O hosted a fabulous Purim Chagiga Carnival, a sushi-making Rosh Chodesh event, and a pre-Pesach camp run by G.O Fundraisers. Students also enjoyed the “‘NASA’ V’nishma: Accepting the Torah” special event where they were treated to an inspiring speech by HAC mother Mrs. Isa Lefkowitz who spoke about her journey to Torah. Mazel Tov to our graduates! We are very proud of your accomplishments during your years at Yavne and we look forward to hearing of your future successes. YAVNE HIGH SCHOOL

On Friday, June 9th at the Oakwood Campus, the 7th and 8th grade boys celebrated with residents of Menorah Park and Montefiore, their rebbeim, and administrators as they concluded their year of intergenerational programming as part of the Better Together program. Residents were greeted at the door by the 7th and 8th graders and entered the cafeteria which was beautifully arranged with fresh flowers and featured a delicious brunch. In his opening remarks, Rabbi Simcha Dessler spoke about the hallmark quality of chesed and how the boys work with the elderly as part of the Better Together program personifies this quality. Then the HAC Better Together video was shown, produced by Mr. Dovid Stern of Cleveland Creative Outlet, that tracked the boys progress over the year via student interviews. Akiva Gecovich presented a poster featuring a picture of himself putting a note written by resident Mr. David Ramser into the Kotel, as well as a Jerusalem snow globe to Mr. Ramser. Mr. Ramser accepted his gift with a dvar Torah about the parsha and a message of thanks and appreciation to the boys for visiting him and other residents over the year. Next, silver medals were awarded to Shalom Dym, Tzvi Lebovics, and Yossi Maimon, the runners up of the Better to Write Essay Contest. Menny Greenberg, the gold medal winner and recipient of a $1500 prize to sleepaway camp, read his winning essay to a very attentive audience. Mazel Tov, Menny! Mr. A.Y. Nakdimen and Mr. Avi Lampert provided the musical entertainment, and the boys enjoyed painting mugs with the residents and singing and dancing to the music as the inspiring and enjoyable morning concluded. Thank you to Mrs. Alex Fleksher, Mrs. Suri Goldman, and the 7th and 8th grade rebbeim for making the Better Together program such a success this year. BETTER TOGETHER 13
