Rav Nochum Zev Dessler kwwmz A pioneer and legend in Torah chinuch and an educator’s educator, Rabbi N. W. Dessler kwwmz, venerable Dean, was instrumental in transforming the landscape of Jewish education in America. A gentle giant, he was an exemplary mechanech who taught three generations of youth by example. The scion of generations of illustrious Rabbinic personalities, Rabbi Dessler was the son of Rabbi Eliyohu Eliezer Dessler kwwmz, one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, and a grandson of the revered Alter of Kelm and Rabbi Yisroel Salanter kwwmz. In 1943, Rabbi Dessler introduced the then foreign concept of a Jewish day school to Cleveland’s Jewish community. Under his leadership, the Academy emerged as a national leader and innovator in the field of Jewish education and continuity. Rabbi Dessler’s impeccable character and visionary leadership profoundly impacted the 7,000 alumni who were fortunate to benefit from the Academy experience. Rabbi Dessler’s inspiring legacy lives on in the Academy, in his family, in his students, and in the thousands of lives he touched. lurc urfz hvh

Our First Line of Defense The high goals set for the Hebrew Academy by our founders back in 1943 – to give the children of the Cleveland community a meaningful, Torah-oriented education, to develop students with a sincere respect and understanding of Torah scholarship, a profound and mature feeling for Torah living, concern for the community, and a love for Israel – remain essential in today’s world. Certainly, Torah educated youth, like Hebrew Academy educated youth, represent our first line of defense against indifference towards our heritage. Growth of the Academy The growth of the Hebrew Academy from a basement classroom with a handful of students to today’s three campuses with an enrollment of over 1,457 students has been remarkable. Educational aids and curriculum materials, prepared at the Academy, have been used by other day schools in the United States, Canada, England, South America, South Africa, and in other locales. For most of the span of our history Rabbi N. W. Dessler k"mz, Dean, and Irving I. Stone k"z, Chairman, were at the helm of the Academy. They were the pillars of the school in their respective roles as the two men who contributed most to the expansion of the school as it is today. Today at the Academy Rabbi Simcha Dessler serves as Menahel/Educational Director. Education is provided in a wholesome school environment which fosters moral and ethical behavior in the true tradition of our great Jewish heritage. Rabbi Eli Dessler serves as Financial Director. The Academy today offers a complete religious and secular educational program from early childhood through the Philip and Mary Edlis Elementary School, the Beatrice J. Stone Yavne High School for Girls and through its association with Yeshiva of Cleveland at the Mendy and Ita Klein Campus. Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev, the Hebrew Academy Kollel, is an innovative, schoolbased Kollel, providing mentors and friends to our Junior High School and High School students. The students attend classes six days a week, 34 weeks a year. The Judaic Department meets Sunday through Friday for 23 hours weekly for first, second and third grades; 26 hours weekly for fourth grades; 32 hours weekly for fifth and sixth grades; 35 hours weekly for seventh and eighth grades and 41 hours weekly in the High School. The Academy is renowned for a unique dimension in its Judaic Studies Program. Voluntary after-school enrichment programs have played an integral part in enhancing the spirit of Torah education that thrives in the school. The Irving I. Stone Student Tzedakah Fund, community service and intergenerational programs are indispensable components of the Academy experience. Another Academy innovation is the Summer Torah Enrichment Program. Camp S.T.E.P., as it is called, is a full-scale Torah and activities program that offers its campers (with intensive learning) each-morning, followed by swimming, sports, and trips to various places of interest. Over the years, special classes and tutors have been provided for New American immigrant children or lateral transfers to Jewish day school to enable them to learn and grow as Torah Jews. All of this and more make the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland a very exciting place to be! World-Renowned In Torah Education
The Hebrew Academy students receive a well-rounded, intensive and extensive education – an educational background that will enable them to enter a yeshiva, seminary, college, or any school of higher learning of their choice. Most important, it prepares them well to meet the challenges of the world of tomorrow. The Hebrew Academy has a specific fourteen-year program. Hebrew alphabet is introduced in prekindergarten. Hebrew reading is mastered in kindergarten. Hebrew writing and the study of Chumash is introduced in the first grade. The Rashi Commentary in the third, Nach - Prophets and Mishna in the fourth, Talmud in the fifth, and Tosefos Commentary on the Talmud in the seventh grade. The study of Mussar and Hebrew Literature is introduced in the Senior High School. Hebrew Language, history laws and customs, a review of the weekly Sedrah is taught throughout all classes. Special time is also devoted for the study of the geography of Israel. Boys, beginning with the fifth grade, attend morning minyan with active participation of the students as shluchei tzibur and baalei-kriah. As many as 160 students participate daily at both Academy minyanim. The Rabbeim serve as participants at the minyan. Starting in kindergarten, students begin the learning of reading and mathematics. Emphasis on reading comprehension and developing writing skills continues throughout the elementary program. Elementary mathematics includes topics in word problems, measurement and geometry and a strengthening of problem solving and computational skills. As students progress into high school they receive courses in Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Sociology, Computer Application, Music, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and more. Also, college courses in English, Literature, Calculus and American History are offered. Student services available at the Academy include: a special education program in Judaic Studies; special education services in General Studies, speech and language therapy; remedial reading; services of academic and behavioral interventionists, enrichment specialists, social workers, nurse and designated professionals for the learning disabled. Special programs are offered for those with a limited Hebrew background. The award-winning Bigs and Littles Mentoring Program has captured the attention of the State of Ohio and was recognized with an award. PENINIM, an Academy publication edited by Rabbi L. Scheinbaum, deals with weekly Torah thoughts on Parshas Hashavuah. This includes weekly insights plus questions and answers on all levels. The Academy thus enhances the Shabbos table of families across the globe. The ACADEMY IN ACTION is a biannual publication keeping parents and supporters abreast of all facets of school activity and accomplishments. CHADASHOS is a weekly bulletin including an educational/inspirational message from the Menahel/ Educational Director, information and accomplishments in every division. Over 1,000 state-of-the-art computers and chromebooks foster the integration of technology in the curriculum and serve as an integral part of the Academy General Studies programs. The Academy is also equipped with a full complement of audio visual equipment and materials including projectors, VCRs, and interactive Smart Boards and clevertouch screens. Our High School is fully accredited and chartered by the Ohio State Board of Education. We offer university level courses in conjunction with a local college. Credits are transferable to the university of the graduate's choice. The All Day School From Early Childhood Through High School sbkchke•rkxs crv lubhj ,hc
Our Graduates One commencement class after another produces graduates, all of whom continue in schools of higher Jewish learning. Most attend Yeshivos and teacher training schools in Israel. Over 500 graduates of the Hebrew Academy are now engaged as Hebrew teachers, Rabbis, or administrators in our community as well as in close to 75 communities throughout the nation and Israel. The school’s objective is to recreate the image of the talmid chacham and the aishes chayil. Its scope encompasses more than the transmission of knowledge and inculcation of our culture; it includes the obligations to continue the glorious chain of our mesorah and to recreate and restore love for Torah and Eretz Yisroel. Approximately 600 of our graduates now reside in Israel, in fulfillment of the ideals and aspirations with which they were imbued throughout their years at the Academy. The graduates of the Hebrew Academy can be found in the study halls of the finest yeshivos and universities in the world. There they perform with distinction and go on to take their honored positions in education, in the arts, in the sciences, in professions and in services to community. To date, the Academy has educated over 7,000 alumni, many of whom have assumed leadership positions in virtually all fields of accomplishment in communities across the globe. National Recognition The curriculum developed by the Academy for its elementary, junior and senior high school divisions are nationally renowned. It has been adopted and published by Torah Umesorah - The National Society for Day Schools, as a model curriculum for day schools throughout the country. More recently, the Academy has published a Holocaust curriculum series which is currently being studied in high schools across the country. The Academy was honored by Torah Umesorah as Day School of the Year in 1987 and by the Cleveland Jewish Community Federation with its prestigious Charles Eisenman Award in 1992 and again in 2003. In 2002, the Hebrew Academy was awarded a National Schools of Character Practices Citation for its exemplary character development curriculum. In 2006, the Academy's special education programs were recognized by Partnership For Excellence in Jewish Education as some of the “most noteworthy practices” in national Jewish education. The State of Ohio awarded the Academy its Stellar Award in 2006, its Asset Builder Award in 2008 and its Quality Achievement Award in 2009. The Academy was also the recipient of two day school excellence awards from PEJE. Beatrice J. Stone Yavne High School 2023 Graduating Class Tomorrow’s Teachers, Professionals, Community Leaders

The Hebrew Academy of Cleveland has earned a well deserved national reputation for its accomplished Torah chinuch over the past eight decades. With remarkable growth and the inspired investment of heart and soul of so many dedicated professionals and baalei batim, the mosad continues to be a shining star in Klal Yisroel. It’s hard to imagine what Cleveland would look like, or for that matter what Klal Yisroel would look like, without the successes of this mosad. Mazel Tov to this year’s honorees: Doctors Shaya and Tamara Lempel, role models in the community; Rabbi Maimon Elbaz, an exceptional mechanech; and Rabbi and Mrs. Yitz Frank, recipients of the Mendy Klein Community Service Award. February 28, 2024 Rabbi Simcha Dessler Menahel Hebrew Academy of Cleveland 1860 South Taylor Road Cleveland, OH 44118 Dear Rabbi Dessler, Mazel Tov on the remarkable 81-year legacy of exceptional achievements in Torah chinuch for the Cleveland community. The visionary and pioneering leadership of Rav Nochum Zev Dessler זצ"ל has yielded remarkable results, reflected in the classrooms of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland/Beis Chinuch HaRav Dessler, and in the hearts and minds of all the talmidim and talmidos. Torah Umesorah values its enduring and fruitful relationship with the Hebrew Academy. אדר ב' תשפ"ד Dear Rabbi Dessler, א"שליט On behalf of the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools (CoJDS), it is my pleasure to express our appreciation for your efforts in Climbing Higher, Nurturing Connections, Inspiring Leaders. We strongly value the partnership between CoJDS and the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland (HAC). Your session on “Professionalism” to our Lilmod U’lilamed teacher training program was very apropos as it typifies the spirit of professionalism you have infused in your staff. We view HAC as a paradigm of what a Jewish day school can do to build a community and inspire leaders. Indeed, many of your graduates have climbed higher to serve as leaders in the greater Cleveland community, North America and beyond. There is no doubt that the success of the Cleveland community would not be possible without the HAC, the vision of your father Rav Nachum Zev Dessler, ה"ע ,and the continued dedication of you and your wonderful staff. During this difficult time for Klal Yisrael I keep in mind the spirit your father, ה"ע, infused into the school and the relevance to our time. As your brother R’ Eli put it, “he felt every Jewish child was entitled to a Jewish education, no matter what color his kipah was or even whether he wore a kipah or not.” This lesson is what builds our people and connects us all. This recognition of the primacy of Jewish education and אחדות is our hope for the future. As you celebrate your dinner, we continue to cherish the special relationship we have established and hope to be able to see Hebrew Academy of Cleveland grow חיל אל מחיל. כל טוב, Rabbi Heshy Glass, Ed.D. National Chairman Consortium of Jewish Day Schools
