Dassi Hoen, in eleventh grade, won first place Honorable Mention in the high school division of the Jossi Berger Holocaust Study Center Essay and Poetry contest. Yavne girls Sora Domb and Hannah Rosenthal had poems published in the high school edition of Creative Communications, and primary students Bracha Greenfeld, Seema Kazen, and Tzippy Mahalli had poems published in the elementary school edition. An overflow crowd attended the Hebrew Academy’s 62nd Scholarship Tribute Dinner which paid tribute to the Jewish Community Federation and honored Yechezkal (Evan) Spero of Tifrach, Israel with the prestigious International Alumnus Award. 6 3 Sunday morning Father/Son Learning sessions are one of the highlights at Saperstein Campus. The program helps forge the bonds of Torah that unite father to son. On one particular Sunday, a moving and memorable siyum was held on Shesha Sidrei Mishnah in commemoration of the tenth yarzheit of veteran Academy mechanech, Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Katz, zt’l. Various talmidim spoke on each of the sidrei mishna; Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Educational Director and Rabbi Avrohom Katz of Toronto delivered stirring messages, and Rabbi N.W. Dessler recited the kaddish – Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Katz’s legendary ahavas Yisroel will continue to inspire us all. ART AROUND THE YEAR REMEMBERING RABBI C.T. KATZ, ZT’L Our art units revolve around our bountiful plethora of wonderful holidays. Whether it’s making havdalah candles or Purim masks, baking matzos or designing Shavuos flowers – students learn hands-on how creativity can enhance special ocassions. The themes of our yearlong midos program in the Girls Elementary Division were hakaras hatov, gratitude, and shmiras halashon, proper speech. As part of the hakaras hatov program the girls sang a touching tribute to their mothers and crafted beautiful hadlakus haneirus, candlelighting plaques which they presented to their mothers at our annual Mother/Daughter Sing-a-long evening. Students learned how the Cleveland Bikur Cholim program provides meals for patients and caregivers. Fourth grade girls worked in groups to sew cozy blankets which they delivered to the Bikur Cholim House which hosts out-of-town patients at Cleveland Clinic. A fourth grader wrote, "From my visit to the Bikur Cholim house I learned not to take the fact that I can talk, walk, and move around easily for granted. When I grow up I want to be a volunteer." Project BEAM (Be A Mentch), an ongoing middos program, coordinated by Rabbi Shraga Weimer in our Yeshiva Ketana Division, teaches friendship and concern for others. The boys publish a newsletter, "The Honorable Mentchen," that highlights extraordinary examples of these traits. This program continues throughout the year, encouraging achdus, unity and hislahavus, enthusiasm for doing good. MIDOS PROGRAMS CHESED / COMMUNITY SERVICE Throughout the year, seventh and eighth grade boys at the Sapirstein campus gained immensely from weekly trips to Menorah Park Center for Senior Living, Montefiore Home, Stone Gardens Assisted Living Residence, and Wiggins Place. Because these trips were conducted on a regular basis, talmidim got to know residents by name and form warm relationships. The staff at one home responded with a note, "You brought your youthful presence, of comfort, prayers, and friendly wishes to so many people. You were truly the Mitzvah Makers this year at Montefiore." Many thanks to Mrs. Suri Goldman for coordinating this successful program. Another chesed program blossomed when Mrs. Adi Feen, an Academy parent, asked Children’s Services at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital how the school could help, and was advised to encourage students to paint murals for the playroom at Rainbow Hall. Students at all grade levels embraced the idea and created many original works of art. "The hospital feels more child-friendly and ‘homey’ with what you’ve created," wrote a hospital representative, "They added so much to our unit." The arrival of Purim, Pesach, and Shavuos herald a yearly tradition at Yavne: entertaining tzedakkah projects that raise funds for those in need. Before Purim, students designed original shlach manos containers that were raffled off to the highest bidder. Right before Pesach, girls participated in a Chinese auction whose dividends went to tzedakah. The annual Shavuos flower sale drew customers from surrounding communities who bought dozens of roses and carnations that the girls put up for sale; once again proceeds went to Tifrach Torah Centers in Israel. These programs are under the umbrella of the Irving I. Stone Student Tzedakah Fund. TZEDAKAH PROJECTS AT YAVNE TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING TOOL Fifth grade Rebbe, Rabbi Ariel Klein, has incorporated the innovative Gemorah Berura computer program into his curriculum, using it as a tool to reinforce Gemorah vocabulary skills. Words are color coded according to shape, and flow charts link various aspects of each piece of Gemorah. A computer will never supercede a Rebbe, but some software now developed can help students with different learning styles acquire proficiency in a way best suited for them. 2005_July_News2.qxd 7/26/05 4:35 PM Page 8

Akiva Goldstein and Aharon Meir Freund earned top places in the national V’Dibarta Bam Mishnayos program. Many other boys completed Masechtos Megillah, Yuma, Sanhedrin and Beitza and took exams on what they learned. This program is dedicated to the memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. 5 Now in its fifth year, the sixth grade continues to invite grandparents to speak to the class. Always, the girls emerge with a clearer understanding of history and vivid, poignant remembrances that they will not forget. This year’s speakers included Rabbi Joseph Fabian who traveled through Shanghai, Mr. Herbert Schabes who grew up in Switzerland, and Mr. Joseph Greenfeld who told about his childhood in Hungary. The sixth grade boys listened to a talk by Mrs. Esther Mann who spent the war years in Russia. As one student wrote in his thank you letter, "I really learned a lot about how to treat food, what your life in Russia was like, and how you felt. We know that everything that happens and takes place is something that is up to Hashem our G-d. We should not take things for granted." INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM SIYUM MISHNAYOS 4 After months of combined Torah learning, the impossible occurred. The time difference between Israel and Cleveland disappeared and was replaced with simultaneous joy as students in our fifth grade celebrated a joint siyum with their counterparts in the Od Yosef Chai/Yeshiva Tiferet Moshe in Beit Shean, Israel. Rabbi Simcha Dessler addressed both schools through a live video conference. Talmidim were able to hear the Hadran recited at the completion of Meseches Beitza in Mishnayos, and watch each other sing together as if they were in the same room. The feeling of achdus and ahavas ha’Torah stretched across the continents and created an unforgettable experience for boys on both sides of the ocean. Hale Farm is a working historical farm about an hour’s distance from the school. Boys traveled there, observed a working loom, glassblowers, tinsmiths, farmers, and sheep shearers. This helped them truly understand the concepts involved in the 39 melachos. BEIT SHEAN VIDEO CONFERENCE HALE FARM KOL YISROEL AREIVIM The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland coordinated a visit by members of the Israel Defense Force. The soldiers expressed gratitude for the daily Tehillim recited on behalf of our brethren in Israel. Students peppered the soldiers with questions about Israel and their life in the army. All left with a feeling that "kol Yisroel areivim," all Jews are connected to one another. HAC SCIENCE AND BOOK FAIRS Science Fair projects display a mastery of scientific theory and research skills. This year, students outdid themselves with well-researched presentations that offered scientific hypotheses for everyday occurrences that sometimes stymie our minds. As Dr. Eli Feen, a parent and judge wrote, "Everyday in my work as a physician, I depend upon medications and treatments that have been tested through the very same methods you teach your students. It is clear to me from speaking with each of them that they understand the science behind their experiments." Book reports are not a thing of the past in Hebrew Academy. Students are encouraged to read and fifth graders conclude the year with an afternoon book fair that lauds the information that can be derived from books. Politics comes to life when politicians come to the classroom. Third grade girls had many questions for Mr. Herbert L. Braverman, Orange Village Councilman who came to visit the classroom and extended an invitation to visit his chambers. The girls accepted and even elected a mayor for a while. STUDENT MAYOR A major fundraiser, the Hebrew Academy’s Chinese Auction is indebted to Mrs. Suri Goldman for spearheading this most successful event. Parents volunteered, students gladly chipped in to help, and a wonderful time was had by all. HAC CHINESE AUCTION “S” GEZUNT Everyone has a favorite recipe, preschoolers included. As a momento of each school year, the Early Childhood Division publishes a unique cookbook. Each page contains a preschooler’s recipe, the child’s photograph, and a quote about their recipe. The books are a joint effort that unite parents, teachers, and students in a bond of friendship. Students in the chemistry class were assigned research projects on elements of the Periodic Table. The project concluded with a PowerPoint presentation that showcased their research in an innovative way. POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS 2005_July_News2.qxd 7/26/05 4:32 PM Page 6
