Chadashos 5.17.24

Chadashos 5.17.24

8:22 Perhaps it was a reminder. Or was it an admonishment? For decades the national media presented a nightly, familiar question as a public service announcement: “It is ten p.m. now. Do you know where your children are?” The question is perhaps more relevant today than ever before – even in the most sheltered of communities. In presenting the commandment to kindle the menorah, Hashem addressed Moshe Rabbeinu with a specific instruction: Yaaroch oso Ahron, Ahron shall arrange it … chukas olam l’doroseichem, an eternal decree for your generations (24,3). Baal HaTurim points out that, unlike a parallel pasuk in Parshas Tetzave which mentions Ahron but includes his sons (Shemos 27,21), this particular pasuk only mentions Ahron. This is because after Ahron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu, died when they entered the heichal, Ahron refused to allow his remaining sons to enter the heichal by themselves; he accompanied them. Quoting the above commentary, Rabbi Yitzchok Zilberstein, Rav of Ramat Elchonon, underscored that we are talking about an incredibly sacred family – the sons of Ahron HaKohen no less – and yet Ahron refused to allow his children to engage in the sacred work unaccompanied. He inferred from here that, even in the most noble of places, parents must be cognizant of the whereabouts of their children. It behooves us to be ever aware of their actions, whereabouts and surroundings. We are living in a permissive society and one in which more and more parents are overburdened by the challenges of everyday life. The combination of these two factors brings yet another daunting challenge: the supervision of our children. And sometimes we rely on technology as a convenient means of entertainment in lieu of parental supervision. Liberties taken by friends and neighbors as they raise their children need not hold every family captive. Parents must acknowledge that, although overburdened with responsibilities, we must prioritize both time and attention for the betterment of our children – for all aspects of their growth, development, safety and welfare. What has shifted from previous generations is that we are no longer out of the woods with the knowledge that “it is ten p.m. and our children are safely at home.” That sense of relief is now tempered by the intrusion of vulnerabilities that have crept into the sanctity of our homes and the privacy of our kids’ rooms. They might be home but do we know what they are doing? The nicest children, the finest families and the most sheltered communities are not immune. It’s not only about technology but, for better and for worse, technology is reshaping our society and our communities – even the most sheltered of communities. That’s where parents could and should step in. At the very least, we should be aware of the dangers, but we could do better. Let’s be vigilant and care enough to make a difference! | | Early Childhood This week, our licensing inspector visited to conduct an evaluation to maintain our star rating for Step Up To Quality, a government initiative focused on continual improvements in various domains. All the necessary paperwork and documentation were meticulously reviewed and completed. Of greater significance, the inspector was notably impressed by the calm atmosphere throughout our facility and the consistently positive and nurturing interactions between our teachers and the children. She acknowledged the warmth and care evident between the staff and the students, and needless to say, we passed the inspection with exemplary results and were awarded maintaining our multi star rating. Morah Shani and Morah Elisheva’s kinderlach celebrated the culmination of learning the letters Alpeh-yud. During their Siyum, they enthusiastically decorated hats, ties, and bows with bingo markers, played an Aleph-yud bingo game, ate yummy Aleph Beis cookies and even visited Rabbi Dessler in his office as they sang their Alef Bais song for him, showcasing their learning in a fun and interactive and proud way. The kinderlach in Morah Laya and Morah Shani’s class learned about the mail carrier. They children were delighted to learn about the process of how letters and newspapers get from one place to the next until it reaches the mail box of their destination. They had a blast decorating mail man hats and playing post office with the toys and proper materials in their classroom. Morah Fayge and Morah Shoshi invited Detective Alvin who is part of our security team, to their class. The children were enthralled to welcome him and to listen to what he shared with them about the tools and methods he employs in his work to apprehend wrongdoers. Kindergarten Spring has sprung in Kindergarten (in theory?) and Morah Modes and Morah Mindy’s class have been learning words in Hebrew to express that. They painted beautiful butterflies and learned the word “Parpar”. Now their classroom really looks like spring!

| | Girls Elementary Our Girls Elementary division began its Eretz Yisrael assembly this week with a heartwarming video presentation about the many aspects of Eretz Yisrael and culminated with Tehillim for those on the front lines there. Our hearts are always with them! Our third-grade classes enjoyed a memorable party on the culmination of their brachos unit and the completion of a classwide brachos incentive. The girls had the opportunity to make brachos aloud and answer Amen; this was a hands-on and tasteful learning experience! Upon walking into the Beis Medrash on Wednesday morning to celebrate the completion of the entire Sefer Bereishis, our fourth-graders were amazed to find it beautifully decorated for this momentous occasion. Everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast of bagels, cereal, and more! In addition, and thoughtfully, the girls sent a delectable breakfast and wrote meaningful letters of hakaras hatov to the moros from their previous years—the meaningful kind that moros put away into their personal parent and student letter archive at home—for helping them reach this milestone. Kindergarten (continued) As the next step in English reading, the kindergarteners have learned about digraphs. (Ask your kindergarten child to explain what that means). The first one they learned was “ck”. How fun it was to decipher Morah‘s riddles and get a lollipop (lick on a stick) and a black magic to do with a stick, and some classes made a duck mask! The new digraph is “ch”, which found the classes using their math skills to illustrate addition and subtraction equations with the coins in their treasure chests.

| | Yeshiva Ketana We are extremely proud of our talmidim in the Yeshiva Ketana. Throughout the year the boys have been giving tzedakah daily, raising money for Bikur Cholim and Ma'atan B'sayser. Up to date, we have raised nearly three thousand dollars, bs"D. We received a large check presented by Rabbi Aryeh Leib Joseph, Executive Director of Bikur Cholim expressing their hakaras hatov to the Yeshiva Ketana. Tizku lmitzvos! Mazel tov to Moshe Aharon Cohen in Morah Burnstein’s first grade class for his siyum on Meseches Sukkah. May he continue to be misayeim many more limudim in the future, b’ezras Hashem and bring much nachas to all. We are extremely proud! Girls Elementary (continued) General Studies: Mrs. Post's second grade class began a math unit on measurements. The girls are doing a great job using rulers to measure items in inches and centimeters. Thanks, Mrs. Miriam Koval, for taking the time to come in to speak to our 3rd grade about the business you started. The girls are working hard creating their own businesses and it was nice to hear about someone's personal experience. Our first and second grade classes enjoyed a special treat for reading 200 hundred books in our reading program. A few of them finished the reading program and earned a special prize! We are excited for all the girls to complete the program. The girls are enjoying the tether-balls and nice spring weather! Thank you to Mr. Hershel Shaw for working on adding new recess games and keeping our building needs always under control! Thank your to Mr. Josh for helping prep a garden for our 3rd graders who requested to build a new Monarch Butterfly garden! Ahuva Stern, in Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Spolter’s class wrote a very persuasive essay convincing the administration that the 3rd grade could plant and take care of this new addition!

| | Yeshiva Ketana (continued) This past Monday, grades 1-3 were treated to a very special three-part video presentation in the auditorium generated by Torah Live. The first segment dealt with the remarkable ma’alos of Eretz Yisrael and how so many Yidden, dating back to the times of the Ta’anaim and Amoraim, dreamed of having the opportunity of traveling to the Holy Land where our ancestors walked. The middle section dealt with several mitzvos hatiluyos b’aretz – those mitzvos which are kept in Eretz Yisrael. Lastly, the boys were captivated by the video which discussed the importance of tefilah and refraining from talking in shul; especially now, with the present situation in Eretz Yisrael. The boys walked away inspired, with a better appreciation of Artzeinu Hakedosha and additional yedios about these special mitzvos. May we be zoche to see the coming of Moshiach b’miheira b’yameinu, amein! On Monday, the Yeshiva Ketana (grades 4 -6) was treated to a live stream, via Zoom, from Eretz Yisrael. It was an inspiring presentation given by a shemita observant farmer, Mr. Avichai Koch, who lives down South in Eretz Yisrael. Miraculously, his Moshav was completely spared on 10/7. The presentation included the details of how farming works on a Moshav, the observance of Shemita, and the miracle that spared them on that fateful day. In response to recognizing the Yad Hashem, he and his family, with the help of yeshiva students from Netivot, have been supporting chayalim with food and necessary supplies. What a beautiful testament to the achdus of Klal Yisrael. The boys (and Rabbeim) walked away truly inspired. This past Rosh Chodesh, the third and fourth grade talmidim joined together in our Bais Medrash for the singing of Hallel and the davening of Mussaf. They were also treated to an entertaining story told by Rabbi Matitia, followed by an exciting raffle. Earlier that day, the 5th and 6th grade davened a beautiful davening for Rosh Chodesh, Pictured is Gavriel Klavan, leading the tefillah. General Studies: The first grade boys have been working hard on their animal research for their upcoming Project-Based Learning Event: “Exploring Our Habitat Expedition.” As their year of hard work comes to an end, the first grade boys are celebrating their accomplishments with an ABC Countdown to second grade! Each day, they will be completing an activity based on the letters of the alphabet. For the first letter of the alphabet, they went to the zoo to see the animals! Can’t wait to follow along as their countdown continues! Thank you to the first grade team and our amazing chaperones for keeping our boys happy and safe! Thank you to Mrs. Pentelnick, Mrs. Elbaz, Dr. and Mrs. Israeli, Rabbi Grodko, Mrs. Stern, Mrs. Solowitch, Mrs. Zak, Mrs. Arnstein, Mrs. Boim, Mrs. Hiller, and Mr. Herssein!

Junior High School Rabbi Chanina Dessler’s seventh grade completed the second perek of Meseches Makkos and plan to celebrate next week with Pizza and a baseball game. Mechayil el chayil. General Studies: Mr. Dier’s 7th grade History class welcomed Academy alumnus, Dr. Jeffrey Lautman to speak about his mother’s incredible journey through the Holocaust. The boys saw a video interview with Dr. Lautman’s mother and real artifacts and mementos from her experiences. A powerful and meaningful experience all the boys will remember. | | Yavne High School Our Iyar G.O. girls in Yavne Junior High, Miriam Boim, Tova Covitch, Sara Emuna Friedman, Sofya Itin, Bracha Kielski, and Shani Schultz prepared and performed a compound skit to break out our upcoming Lag Baomer trip. The girls are super excited to go to Fun n Stuff to celebrate the joyous day! StandUp is a program where we are focusing on different aspects of kavod. This week we focused on kavod haTorah. At an assembly this week, Mrs. Shani Kohn spoke about the importance of kavod haTorah and how it applies to our daily lives. All the girls made a kabbalah that they would keep until the end of Sefirah that will help them enhance their kavod haTorah. The chessed heads prepared an activity for the girls to “Get to know our chessed players”. The girls had to find other students who do different acts of chessed in the community, and were treated to ice pops. Also, those who did their chessed over Pesach were treated to H.O.M.E baked cookies. Thank you to the chessed heads for their devoted hard work.
