Principal Says
Greetings to FLT Parents/Guardians:
Good-bye to summer and welcome to the beginning
of the 2019-2020 school year. This is the time of year
when you, your children and the staff of Furman L.
Templeton Preparatory Academy make, what I call,
“School Year Resolutions”. It’s sort of like “new
year’s resolutions” but the things I promise to do for
the new school year. Here are my new school year
resolutions:
· I will support our teachers, you , and our students in creating school climate and
culture where every child and parent feels welcomed, safe, and loved.
· I will enhance school and parent relations by taking a “personal touch and interest” in
student, staff and parent concerns.
· I will always be a bridge, when needed, between you and your child’s teacher. When you
call or text, I will respond as soon as possible.
· I am interested in what you think about our school so I am here to listen if you want to
share.
· And most importantly---I will always put students first. It’s not what’s best for me.
It’s not what’s best for you. It is what’s best for the kids.
I hope you and your child have the best school year, ever. Stay connected with the school,
the teachers and the administration. All of us have big dreams for your children. Together
we are a TEAM.
Team Work Makes The Dream Work.
Sincerely,
4
Dr. Evelyn M. Perry, Principal
Core Value
This month’s core value is respect. Respect throughout a
school building helps ensure safety and learning which is
the number one thing each of us is charged with. Respect is
defined as a feeling of deep admiration for someone or
something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or
achievements. Michelle Obama once said, “We learned
about gratitude and humility- that so many people had a
hand in our success, from the teachers who inspired us to
the janitors who kept our school clean…any we were taught
to value everyone’s contribution and treat everyone’s
contribution and treat everyone with respect.
” Here at Furman, it is our continued mission to ensure that all stakeholders are treated
respectfully through positive word choice, action, and affection. It was through respect
that I was able to listen long enough to the words and lessons of my elders that were
necessary for the development of strong character, critically thinking skills, and
empowered spirit. Kindness and courteous is free but so necessary in a space filled with
people of different backgrounds, upbringing, and stories. Let’s continued our combined
effort to teach our students the power and benefit of respect through honest
conversations, positive modeling, and accountability. We are building SUPERHEROES in
our very own backyard. It is up to us to teach them how to use their powers for good and
not evil and it starts with RESPECT.
5
Core Value
Respect: due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others.
Ways to show respect include but is not limited to:
1. What does it feel like to be respected?
2. What does it feel like to be disrespected?
3. What role does respect play in your relationships
with friends and family?
4. What are some respectful behaviors?
5. How important is respect in our lives? Why?
6. Do you consider yourself to be a respectful
person? Why or why not? In what ways do you show
respect to others?
Ways to discuss respect with your child and/or family include:
● Don’t insult people or make fun of them.
● Listen to others when they speak.
● Value other people's opinions.
● Be considerate of people's likes and dislikes.
● Don't mock or tease people.
● Don't talk about people behind their backs.
● Be sensitive to other people's feelings.
● Don't pressure someone to do something he or she doesn't want to do.

Illuminating Intervention
The intervention team at FLT is hard at work completing pretests with all of the students in the
school in reading and math. The pretest data will be used to track the students’ progress and to
identify students that may be in need of support by the intervention team. After testing is
completed, the parents of students identified for intervention services will be notified via letter.
Students that are identified for the intervention program will receive support every day from an
interventionist. All referrals for intervention (including Reading Partners) will go through the
Intervention department. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Benton.
The Gifted and Advanced Learning (GAL) program will continue this year! Last year, we had 29
students in the GAL program in grades K through 5. Students in Kindergarten this year will taking
the Naglieri Non-verbal Ability Test (NNAT3) in the coming months to identify those students
needing gifted and advanced programming. If you need more information about our gifted
program, please see our school website!
If you would like to know more about how to support your child at home, do not hesitate to ask!
Mrs. Benton is available on Wednesdays to provide support for families. Please contact her by email
at [email protected] or call 443.836.6439 to schedule an appointment.
This year, we continue to partner with Healthier Generation to provide health and wellness opportunities for
students, families, and staff. Throughout the year, we will have many activities and fundraisers that support
our goals of bringing health and wellness to our school community. At the end of the school year, our
culminating event will be the Furman Fit Festival!
th
On September 12 , we will have our first Furman Fitness Day Fundraiser. Students who choose to participate
in the fundraiser will pay $3 to dress in workout clothes for the day, participate in a group workout session,
and receive a healthy snack to re-energize after the workout. Stay tuned for a flyer with more information
about the upcoming Fitness Day and other activities!
Wellness tip for September: Water is the best choice for fluid consumption for people age 6 months and
older! Did you know that the human brain is 70% water! Consuming water instead of juice and/or sports
drinks is healthier for your brain and your body! Australian researchers have found that children that drink
who drink 16 oz. of juice or more per day are twice as likely to be overweight or obese. Sparkling water is also
a great substitute for soda. This month, when you’re thirsty, skip the juice and grab some water! If you need
some zest, add a lemon or lime!
