AS A LEO, I’VE EXPERIENCED AND GAINED SO WE AS A LEO CLUB, HAVE BEEN SERVING
MANY QUALITIES THAT I HAD NEVER EVEN SOCIETY WITH OUR UNIQUE PROJECTS AND
THOUGHT OF EXPERIENCING, DURING MY LEO IDEAS, WHERE MANY OTHERS CAN GET
JOURNEY UP TO NOW. STARTING THE JOURNEY INSPIRATION TO DO THE SAME. AND THAT’S
WITHOUT ANY CLUE ABOUT MY PATH TO BEING WHAT WE EXPECT AS PROUD LEOS, FOR
A SOCIAL ACTIVIST, I FIRST LEARNED THAT EVERYONE TO JOIN TOGETHER IN THIS
LEOISM IS NOT JUST ABOUT DOING SOCIAL WONDERFUL JOURNEY OF LEOISM AND MAKE
SERVICES, BUT IT IS ALSO ABOUT IMPROVING A BETTER WORLD FOR GENERATIONS AHEAD.
YOUR SOFT SKILLS AND LEADERSHIP QUALITIES, LET ME STOP HERE WITHOUT LENGTHENING
SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH THE THIS PIECE OF SHARING MY EXPERIENCE OF

Leo Club of UOC FOS –
University of Colombo, Faculty of Science has been a
wonderful and flourishing term that was able to MOST OUTSTANDING
achieve greater heights by accomplishing numerous LEO CLUB OF THE DISTRICT

held on the 13th of August 2022 at the Havelock City Clubhouse, Colombo 5 with the

LEO STELLIUM - RISING LEOS
ON THE HORIZON

If you've ever met someone with a strong and well-defined personality, chances
are, they were born with a stellium. A stellium is when three or more planets are
clustered in a single zodiac sign on someone's chart. “Leo Stellium” is such a
bunch of grandiose, expansive energy and talents that come together at the Leo
zodiac sign which isn’t exactly something you could call “common”.

The Leo Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Science has always proved that
it is a wonderful leadership paradise where young people blessed with different
skills and talents come together. Taking a huge step forward, we are proud to
introduce the newest addition to the first quarter of the Leoistic year 22.23,
“Leo Stellium” which is the first-ever official talent pool of our club aiming for the
betterment of Leoism. Skillful and gifted leos are given the privilege to join this
under 6 main divisions of performing arts namely Singing, Dancing, Lyrics and
Scriptwriting, Music composing and Instrument playing, Acting and Voice acting,
and Drawing.

Plans are being made to improve the talents of these brilliant youngsters through
workshops and also to create a platform to showcase them. Also, they will be
adding colours to our future projects through various contributions and
entertaining events. It is our strong belief that this initiative will be a great
opportunity for our Leos to show their unseen talents to the world and be the
best version of themselves.

Orientation

Leoism, taken as a whole, is all about creating a better community and a better world while
gaining opportunities, experiences, and various skills which will make them thrive into a great
leader. The main objective of “Orientation 22.23” was to give the new members information
about the Leo journey that they will be walking through and realize the club goals, how the club
works, and their responsibilities towards it. The program was held on 25th June from 10 a.m.
onwards with Leo Randhir Samarasinghe, District President of Leo District 306A1 as the chief
guest, Leo Malmi Kuruppu, Vice president of Leo District 306A1 as the guest of honor, and
many other directors, advisors from Leo district 306A1 and past executive committee
members and directors from the Leo club of UOC FOS.

The officials for the year 22.23 organized the event in an entertaining way including several
game rounds to keep the audience engaged. Aiming to build friendships and mutual
understanding all the members were divided into 10 teams under the guidance of the avenue
directors of the club to battle for the trophy of Orientation 22.23. The first game was the
game “Mystery” where they had to identify the person from the parts of a picture. In the next
game, each group had to do a creative introduction of themselves with a team name and a
creative post. With so much pride, we should mention that the teams had done an incredible
imaginative job there which was even more than any of us expected. However, the most “on-
fire” game was the dubbing game. The teams had to dub a very short video clip that they were
provided with. This was a very lively and laugh-a-minute for the audience and undoubtedly
helped us to pick out their mind-blowing talents. The final game was conducted via kahoot
platform which included a few questions about Leo’s history, some general knowledge, and
some fun sprinkled questions.

8th Installation Ceremony

The 8th Annual installation ceremony of Leo club of University of Colombo Faculty of
Science was held on 13th of August 2022 at the New Arts Theater. It was a great
pleasure to all of us as we were able to organize this glamorous event physically this
time. The event was glown up by the presence of Leo Randeer Samarasinghe, the District
President of Leo District 306A1 as the chief guest, Leo Malinda Ganewaththa, Multiple
District Treasurer of Leo Multiple District 306 and Lion Sethuramalingam Anthony,
President of Lions Club of Wellawatte as the guests of honor, Lion Deshan Hewawithana,
District Chairman for Leos of Leo District 306A1 as the special guest and many
distinguished guests.

The installation of the newly appointed Executive Board, Director Board and members
was successfully done to move for another flourishing term accomplishing with full
achievements. Here we received all the blessings and the motivational cheers from the
experts to move with dedication on the upcoming adventurous journey as we are making
the dawn of another remarkable year. As a club filled with talented Leos, we made sure to
add a relaxing performance to the agenda that undoubtedly mesmerized the audience.
With loads of happiness, positivity and pride, another auspicious day of the Leo calendar
which signified a new chapter of the Leo Club of University of Colombo Faculty of
Science was concluded.

The immense contribution of the organizers and all the on-stage and back-stage
performers made the installation ceremony a reality full of glamor and pride. This is the
time to continue the legacy by embarking upon an impactful journey in Leoism for this
Leoistic year 22.23 with a magnificent dedication. There’s nothing that this strong family
cannot achieve. Stay tuned with us as our Leos will Serve with pride and Lead with
confidence!

Abhiwandana

The Leo Club of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science, just walked through
the greatest year of the club. With a grateful heart for all the ups and downs,
celebrative and happy memories, struggles and pains faced this past year,
“Abhiwandana” marked the beginning of the projects of the Leoistic year 22/23 of
our Leo family like it had been in the previous years. More than a duty or a
responsibility, “Abhiwandana” has always been the shower of blessings to embark
on a fresh beginning with great missions in our minds.

This time too, the project was organized and held at a temple, a church and a kovil
to represent different religions and to promote cultural understanding and
harmony. On the 4th of July, our Leos got the blessing of triple gems at
Kachchiwaththa Deepaduththarama Temple – Galle, performed the Christian rituals
at Thewatta Church – Gampaha, and Hindu rites at the Kadireshawaran Murugan
Kovil – Bambalapitiya. These religious places were chosen from different districts
over the island to ensure that most of our Leos can physically participate amidst
the distance barriers. Strengthening the bonds of brotherhood, many were able to
participate in this, and the newly appointed officials, along with all the enthusiastic
members, were blessed for a new chapter in Leo’s journey. We believe that with
these countless blessings and our acts of kindness, our club will get the power to
work through the hardest time with greater strength and determination.

INVICTUS

As we all know, back-office roles are important because they are essentially the
backbone of a club to properly function. The Marketing team of our Leo club is the
main back-office function where live streaming, moderating, photography, and all
the marketing tools are being designed. The better one understands these roles,
the more the club operations will run smoothly, setting up for success by boosting
productivity. Hence, the directors of the Marketing Team 22.23 organized
“Invictus”, a workshop series under 4 level upgrades starting from Content writing
followed by Graphic designing, Video editing, and finally Moderating. The
workshops were conducted from the 15th to 18th of July by all the respective
marketing directors, blending with fun and curiosity.

At each level, a task was given to the participants to encourage them as well as to
get a wide idea of the varieties of talents we possess as a club. The winners of
these tasks were given a token of appreciation for showing up their talents with
the contribution of “Felt Crafts”, the official gift partner for the event. Invictus
was really a huge success with over 240 active participants. 4 days with 4 levels,
different tasks, and experiences, we believe that this workshop series definitely
would have been a kickstart for our young Leos and a source of colors to unlock
their true potential and expertise their talents.

Ecotopia – Phase 1

Let’s nurture nature for a greener tomorrow!

Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful islands in the world with excellent climatic
conditions for living, which are gifts by nature we should protect and preserve.
Instead, we destroy our nature which was protected by our forefathers who
adored, venerated, and protected the environment. EcoTopia was such a project
implemented by the Explorers’ Avenue of the Leo Club of the University of
Colombo, Faculty of Science, with the heartiest purpose of conserving the
valuable water resources of the country. The first phase of EcoTopia was done
very successfully with the participation of many at Bomburu Ella, Galpalama,
Nuwara Eliya. We collected all the non-biodegradable waste dumped here and
there that contaminated and blocked the waterways too.

We hope that the hidden ravishing beauty of Bomburu Ella was enlightened by this
cleanup that we carried out. We got the urge to do more successful projects in the
future also by the influence of this project. Our hearts are filled with so much
happiness still when we are reminded of this. The memories we collected, and the
bonds we created will remain the same. And also, the teamwork and hard work of
each and every member of the avenue brought success to this preliminary project.
We believe the good things we do towards Mother Nature will bless us for sure!

Metanoia – Phase 1

“Spiritual journey towards a successful journey.”

Since two years back the world is battling the worst pandemic in history, Covid 19
and so did our country. Along with the pandemic situation and the ongoing
economic crisis on the island, Sri Lanka had lots of negativities in the education
sector where most of the children from both schools and universities were
affected. This period of upheaval has made a significant negative impact on
mental health as a result of schools and universities being closed, quarantines and
isolations, and other sudden changes to their lives.

As responsible and sensitive citizens, the Fellowship and Public Relationship
Avenue Leo Club of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science, therefore, put
forward the project “Metanoia – Phase 1” to provide support for these students at
their maximum. The project was an interactive online webinar held 12th of August
from 6.00 pm onwards via the Zoom platform. The occasion was graced by
Mr.Lakshan Wattuhewa, who is a lecturer at the university of Kothalawala, a well-
known presenter, and also a scriptwriter. We strongly believe that we were able to
touch the young minds of the participants and lit the sparkle of positivity in the
student’s academic life.

League of Leos

“Talent wins games. But teamwork wins championships”

League of Leos 2022 was a fun and enjoyment-filled project organized by the
Sports Avenue of Leo Club of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science. It was
an exciting cricket tournament held at the University grounds on the 11th of
August, with the collaboration and support of all our Leos. Adding to the
excitement of the match, there were food stalls as a part of fundraising to
contribute to the pocket of the club. Everyone’s eyes were drawn to these food
stalls where mouth-watering dishes were displayed. We didn’t forget to add DJ
music throughout the match as a part of this sports experience in order to boost
the energy of our talented champions, create a stress-free, whooping environment
for our own brothers and sisters, and strengthen the bonds among everyone.

There were 20 extremely talented teams on the field led by respective captions
representing all the batches of the faculty. The most interesting fact that made us
crack up was the names of the teams. After a cheerful and competitive match
series, the team “Thanamalwila Moons”, whose aim was to shoot at the moon, and
“Sewanagala Smiles” got selected for the glorious grand finale, and “Sewanagala
Smiles” was the luckiest to win the championship of the League of Leos – 2022. It
was a cheerful day for all the Leos as well as non-Leos as it was a new experience
for everyone to be together as all academic activities were held online from 2020.
The excitement and the energy of the players created many wonderful memories
worth a lifetime.

Isiwara Asapuwa - Phase I

“Age is a matter of feeling, not of years. We must give love, kindness, and care to
those who have walked the path before us.”

Isiwara Asapuwa was a project of love and humanity that was organized by the
Health Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Science. The
project was held on 20th August at the Dehiwala Salvations Army elder’s home.
With the aim of improving the mental and physical health and well-being of those
beautiful souls. Our kindhearted Leos traveled all the way there to conduct the
task with a magnificent contribution. Then a herbal garden was set up there with
the most valuable collection of herbal plants on earth. At the same time, a medical
clinic was also held for them on that day. The medical clinic was conducted by Dr
Bhagya Eshani Somasiri for our beloved elders. After that, our elders were gifted
with local medicines and gifts brought by our Leos. At the end of the day, our
hearts were filled with immense joy and countless blessings. Finally, the
dedication of our Leos made the project a success with an ending full of happiness
and self-satisfaction.

Santhana Phase - 1.1

"Maternity is a glorious thing since all mankind has been conceived, born, and
nourished of women." - Martin Luther

Being pregnant is a big life event and it is natural to feel a lot of different
emotions. It is said that anxiety and depression are commonly found mental issues
during pregnancy.

Santhana - Phase 1.1 is all about breaking the stigma people hold about mental
health and making pregnant women aware of the issues they have to face during
the pregnancy period. Dr I. R. Medagama, a consultant psychiatrist in Panadura
Base Hospital who visited this project didn't forget to give chances for the
mothers along with their family members to express their thoughts and problems
they are currently facing with the intention of giving solutions to uplift their
mental wellbeing. Avenue of Psychological well being and Women empowerment
was able to conduct this soulful phase 1 of the project at the MOH clinic at
Panadura on 20th August 2022 successfully with the hope of coming back
through another amazing project just to give the idea to society that "Mental
Health Matters".

ශ්වේතபுறா - Phase I

"Peace is not the highest goal in life, it is the most fundamental requirement. "

The recent events that took place all around the world have proven the importance
of peace doubtlessly. Peace is something that grows through the purity of the
human heart. So ශ්වේතபுறா was the first attempt of breaking the "invisible wall"
between cultures with the weapons of knowledge and understanding, which was
organized by the Peace and justice avenue of Leo club of University of Colombo,
Faculty of Science.

As the first phase of ශ්වේතபுறா, we embarked on the journey of organizing
shramadhana campaigns at a church, temple, kovil, and a church respectively. As
the first step, we started with organizing a shramadhana campaign at the
St. Lazarus Church on Bandarawatta on the 11th of August followed by
Siri Wajirarama temple and Vajira Pillayaar kovil on the 20th of August as the
second and third steps. As the final step of the first phase, we organized a
shramadhana campaign on Dehiwla Muhaddin Maha Jumma Musjid on 28th August.
Throughout the process, we were enlightened about the effect of cultural
understanding on the peace of society. So as the kick-start ශ්වේතபுறா project
was a great opportunity for us as responsible citizens of the society to explore
and experience cultural understanding.

Yummy Corner

Due to the prevailing situation in the country, it is difficult for the students in the
university to find healthy food, for a reasonable price. The “Yummy Corner” was a
project launched by the Community service avenue of the Leo club of University of
Colombo, Faculty of Science in order to serve the university community healthy
food for an affordable price.
This was the very first project conducted by the avenue for the leoistic year
22.23.

The project was launched successfully on the 31st of August, at the Faculty of
Science premises of the University of Colombo. The quality and the safety of all
the food items sold in the stall were assured as they were prepared under
standard conditions, with careful inspection. We believe the university community
was strongly benefited from the project as a lot of students and staff members
were present at the food stall. We offer our sincere gratitude to the executive
committee of our club for guiding us throughout this amazing project.

Tortuga – Phase 1

“Tortuga-Phase I” was a joint project that was conducted with eight Leo clubs on
the 21st of August 2022 at Jungle beach Unawatuna to promote the conservation
of the marine ecosystem. The Leos, who are keen on beach conservation, were
able to give their maximum contribution to complete the targets to the fullest
level. In this Project, our main focus was on beach cleanup, mangrove replantation,
sea turtle conservation and tree plantation to conserve the coastal habitats. All
these necessary steps affect the conservation of marine biodiversity with a
greater impact.

This idea was generated by the Leos of UDS (Leo Club of Unawatuna Diamond
Stars) and they have planned to do a joint project with the mother Club; the Lion
Club of Unawatuna. Then the other Leo clubs got together to make this worthwhile
idea a reality. The Leo Club of University of Colombo Faculty of Science, Leo Club
of University of Colombo Faculty of Arts, Leo Club of the University of Ruhuna, Leo
Club of Colombo Millenium and Leo Club of Mount Lavinia Oriental Centennial were
the joint contributors behind this successful project. It’s a great pleasure to
mention that all the efforts of the Leos led the task to huge success and we
believe that this act of ours will inspire everyone to act now and save our oceans
by developing marine conservation.
