During the tabling of the department policy speech at the Eastern Cape legislature, the MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Nonkqubela Pieters announced the spring water protection projects as part of the ongoing department’s program. Pieters handed over spring water protection projects to more than 250 Sompondo Village households on the 9th of February, this trained for the rollout of the project including maintenance when there are challenges with infrastructure. It is estimated that one thousand and twelve people benefited from this project including clinics and schools, and two hundred and fifty-three households benefited from the total of forty-three installed taps. “The last time we had water taps, it was 4 years ago and all the time we were struggling to get water, we had to use water from the river which is not clean for consumption. PAGE 6 February 2024 EmpumaNews An ambitious graduate who saw tutoring as a hobby ended up having his own establishment where he tutors students from different schools in King Williams Town, in the Eastern Cape. Ebenezer Asiamah graduated in 2010 in the University of Ghana in Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. He came to South Africa in 2012 hoping to further his studies, he said he stayed about one month in Pretoria then after moved to King Williams Town. Initially he was employed by Mr Kam Kam doing house to house tutoring helping kids who are struggling with their subjects. Ebenezer said he got admitted in the University of Fort Hare to do his Honours but financially he could not carry on, so he continued visiting homes helping learners until he got a job at Peekay College. “2013-2014 I started teaching agricultural science and life science” he was formerly known as Ebenezer but a student started calling him “Mr E” he liked the name and all students began calling him Mr E. He continued sharing how the journey of his establishment started “My first student was Sinazo Kos who was doing grade 9 in De Vos Malan and was struggling in mathematics, someone I know asked if I could help and I did” as time went by Sinazo was doing great in her Maths she later brought a friend from school also in the same grade as her and they both excelled. After seeing that he could actually teach learners and take them from level 1 to level 4 that excited him. He said a number of learners came with Sinazo she also requested that they join the extra classes that shocked him but he agreed “They asked about the price and at that time I didn’t know how to price them so I told them they will pay R300 monthly they paid and I was amazed that I could make up to R3000 in 30 minutes more than I was getting paid at Peekay college”. Then he did not have a place to accommodate learners for extra classes but, the college allowed him use their classrooms. Looking at the numbers of students that multiplied weekly he made a timetable for the students for he had students from different grades. “One faithful day a learner named Lonwabo came to ask how much was I making when I count all the students that I have for extra classes. He made me come to my senses as he advised me to save, as i used to do shopping and other things with money” said Ebenezer, he mentioned that it was 2019 when that particular learner opened his eyes and he started saving. Ebenezer continued saying that 2019 was his breakthrough as he had many learners from different schools doing Mathematics and Maths literacy. 2020 during Covid-19 pandemic he said that it was really hard but the learners followed him to his house for tutoring that he would take his bed outside to accommodate all learners as he was staying in a one roomed flat. He said after realising that he need a more spacious place to accommodate his learners he went looking for a bigger place to rent that needed a little bit of touch to be in a perfect condition he took it and did not tell learners about it so it was a surprise. He went to show them the building and told them he will be moving there soon they were all happy about his progress, he paid rent and fixed the building and was left with only R800. He said it was not easy but because he enjoyed his job it didn’t feel like he was starting this business with only that amount of money, in 2021 he operated as Mr E Extra Tuition tutoring Maths, Maths Lit, Physics and accounting with the help of other teachers that joined him. In 2022 he started offering help in all subjects. Seems like the president has it under control when it comes to corruption because he said they have set up an Investigating Directorate as a specialized and multidisciplinary unit with the National Prosecuting Authority to investigate corruption and other serious crimes. The Legislation is currently before Parliament to establish the Investigation Directorate as a permanent entity with full investigating powers. Based on the recommendations of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council, they are determined to introduce further measures to strengthen their anti-corruption agencies, protect whistle-blowers, regulate lobbying, and prevent the undue influence of public representatives in procurement and they will not stop until every person responsible for corruption is held to account. In terms of setting out a clear plan to end load shedding, the president stated that they have been implementing with a single-minded focus through the National Energy Crisis Committee and they have delivered on their commitments to bring substantial new power through private investment to the grid, which is already helping to reduce load shedding. In the previous year, a major debt relief package was implemented and will enable Eskom to make investments in maintenance and transmission infrastructure and ensure its sustainability going forward. More than 14,000 km of transmission lines will be built to accommodate renewable energy over the coming years, the President mentioned the way of fast-tracking the process and said “We will enable private investment in transmission infrastructure through a variety of innovative investment models”. New and innovative funding mechanisms will be utilized to increase the construction of infrastructure. The Department of Water and Sanitation aims to enhance water resource management by initiating infrastructure projects to secure water supply and diversifying water sources to reduce dependence on surface water. Bulk water projects are under construction across the country to improve water supply to millions of residents in villages, towns, and cities.

A 25 years of age Nontyatyambo Cangcu who is also known as “Nomkhitha” worked as a nurse at Lovington Hospital in Gqeberha and was diagnosed with lymphoma Cancer in April 2023, she fought cancer until she passed away in early January this year. Her Mother Noxolisile Cangcu said that the journey was not difficult, as she was there to take care, support and encourage her daughter, she added and said “What the organizer has done on World Cancer Day has shown me that my daughter was important and respected by people around her, as she was always giving the same energy to people”.
