(Chapter 3: Job Analysis and Job Design, page 149)

Discussion Questions

1) How can a firm know when it’s a good idea to implement telecommuting or not?

Marissa Mayer is the Yahoo’s new CEO ended telecommuting at the struggling Internet-search
company. This decision surprised people because telecommuting is prevalent in high-tech industries
like Yahoo’s. According to this text, Marissa Mayer try to stated few reason why implement
telecommuting is not suitable for certain company. The firm know when it’s good idea or not to
implement telecommuting when they ask themselves and the employees that can the work be done
successfully form home or not. Marissa Mayer’s decision is to ban the employees from working from
home and some of the proponents of telecommuting argue that flexible work arrangement can
improve the productivity of the employees.

The firm come out with few reason why telecommuting is not suitable and the first one is
because you can lose valuable collaboration time. Yahoo sent the memo to their employees that the
best decision come from the casual conversation that sparks ideas to make a company better. The
other reason is telecommuting is not suitable is because the working in the office keeps the team
members on the same path. If you’re implementing a new business strategy, it is essential everyone
understand the company’s goals. The best way to ensure the employees are on the right path is to get
them in the office and working together. This may be one of the reason why Marissa Mayer made the
decisions to axe telecommuting in the first place. In the middle of implementing a new business plan
for Yahoo, Mayer believe having everyone on site helps to ensure success.

2) Can you think of any other pros and cons related to telecommuting that aren’t mentioned in this
case?

From the employer’s perspective, there are many pros to allowing employees to telecommute.

organization running in case of inclement whether or other circumstances. Telecommuting can be
attractive to a variety of employees who need flexibility at the workplace. For example, working
parents can benefit form a jobs that enables them to spend more time at home and . Allowing
telecommuting also can give the employers a wider geographic reach with employees in remote
locations. The employers can reduced costs in the office through less electricity used and less office
supplies needed. Allowing the employees to work from home can save a company money on
permanent work stations for new staff members.

The cons of applying telecommuting to the employees are the first one is the employees are
left out of social activities. Socializing among the employees are very important in order to build the
positive trust and support in the workplace. Those who are work from home will miss the
opportunities that occur during social activities. The other cons of telecommuting less face time with
managers and the employees can me major communication roadblock. Moreover, the benefit of
