18 WELCOME FROM CEO CAPE TOWN PRIDE TOMMY PATTERSON I t gives me enormous pleasure in welcoming all people in our community to Cape Town Pride 2023 ... and this year I have been contacted by a number of people coming to our city from overseas, a group of over 30 lesbian women are coming from the United States, there are people coming from Sweden, Germany, the UK, Denmark and Belgium ... I would like to welcome each and every person visiting this year’s annual City of Cape Town Pride month. The Western Cape Government is a proud supporter of the LGBTQI+ community, and a leading province in promoting equality and individual rights. Their support is visible with the lighting up of the Cape Legislature building in Wale Street in the rainbow colours on the 9th February for Pride month. This year's line up on the Pride stage will have you on your feet and promises to be one of the best yet ... We welcome all the performers, those that are returning as well as those who will appear on the Pride stage for the first time, such as Dope St Jude who has been touring overseas for the past few years and is returning to the city where she attended her first Pride at the age of 16 - Cape Town. Yes, this year, the Pride March is the largest ever and after covid restrictions, the Pride Mardi Gras also promises to be the largest to date ... The annual Pride Festival highlights the diversity and accomplishments of the LGBTQI+ community, while also promoting local tourism and contributing to our economy. Don't forget your sunscreen, don't drink and drive and whatever events you attend at Pride 2023 - have a blast, enjoy yourself and stay safe! #OwnYourTruth 4 #OwnYourTruth

We welcome the thousands of visitors from outside Cape Town traveling for the festival, with the high point being the Pride Parade through the streets of the Mother City. On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I wish the organisers, members of the LGBTIQ+ community and supporters of the festival, a wonderful event experience. Enjoy your stay in our beautiful city. My best wishes, Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis 8 #OwnYourTruth #OwnYourTruth

Life partners need to ensure they have a will in place Contact us at Evagor BlueStar A will is one of the best gifts you can give your loved ones. This is even more so in the case of couples who live together but are not married. It is important to be aware that when it comes to legal affairs and wills, love alone will not always prevail. Your will, in particular, requires careful planning and consideration: 1. If, as a couple, you are accumulating assets together or individually, make sure you have your intentions documented in your will in terms of how and to whom you want your assets distributed. 2. Have some form of agreement, for example a contract of domestic partnership, to regulate your financial affairs. 3. Record your wishes and intentions regarding your assets as far as your life partner is concerned. In this way, you are protecting each other from family members who may have a different view as to how your assets should be distributed. The Law of Intestate Succession does not apply to life partners, but automatically kicks in when someone passes away without leaving a valid will. In order to determine who will inherit the deceased estate, the intestate succession formula works as follows: If a person dies leaving only a married spouse behind, the spouse will be the sole heir. • If there is no married spouse, but there are children, those children will inherit equal portions. • If there is a married spouse and children, they will all get a share of the deceased estate. • If there are only parents, the parents will inherit and if there are only siblings, they will inherit the deceased estate. Based on this, if you are not married but in a stable monogamous relationship and your partner passes away without documenting what he/she wishes to leave you in terms of assets, you will not be able to inherit from his/her estate. It is strongly recommended that life partners speak to their financial adviser to guide them in protecting each other’s assets. It is also advisable that partners in these relationships protect their interests by entering into a contract with one another, for example protection of property interest, or right to maintenance and support, depending on their circumstances. Naturally, it is also essential that life partners execute a last will and testament should they intend to leave assets to their unmarried partner. 18 #OwnYourTruth #OwnYourTruth 36 THE RAINBOW CROSSING WILL BE THE OFFICIAL START OF THE PRIDE MARCH Green Point in Cape Town is now the proud host of a pedestrian crossing in the rainbow colours, the worldwide symbol for the LGBTQIA+ community. This district has in the past been home to many, if not the majority, of the LGBTQIA+ social amenities in the Mother City as well as the annual Cape Town Pride Parade and Festival Mardi Gras. The crossing is also supplemented with a pink strip painted on the sidewalks which serves as a Pink Route to guide visitors and tourists through this iconic LGBTQIA+ neighbourhood and beyond. The pedestrian crossing in the rainbow colours – red, orange, yellow, green, indigo and violet – is located along the busy Somerset Road, between the intersections with Alfred Street and Dixon Street in Green Point. ‘Cape Town is known for its vibrant LGBTQIA+ nightlife and community. We want all to feel welcome in our city where we embrace diversity and the addition of this bold pedestrian crossing to our road network will help spread this message. It also speaks to innovation in public spaces and support for public art that we’d like to foster,’ said the City’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis. The pink lane, which has caused some controversy on social media, runs along Somerset Road, all the way from the intersection with Liddle Sreet, and then along Dixon, Waterkant, and Rose Streets, up to the intersection with Strand Street. ‘You cannot miss the Pink Route, it is about 20cm wide, and painted on the sidewalk. This is a fun way for visitors to get to know the area and a great addition to our tourist offering soon before the peak holiday season. It is also intended to create awareness and celebrate Cape Town as an inclusive city. ‘This exciting ‘place maker’ precinct activator is the first of its kind in Cape Town, and is aimed at re-invigorating the buzz of the LGBTQIA+ district using road markings. There are many more spaces in the city that can be looked into in future and where heritage or unique attractions can be amplified by using sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. I’m calling on visitors and residents to look out for this crossing, and to follow the Pink Route as they explore this part of our city,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. When the Rainbow Crossing was first unveiled, social media was buzzing, with supportive comments: 3 Fingers wrote, “Initially, when I saw this it put a huge smile on my face because it promotes progressiveness in inclusivity and diversity...” Hayden Oosthuizen: “Love this!”️ Tertia Alethea Fairbairn: “Love this!! Truly awesome!!” Natalie Williams: “Moooove over zebras the proud rainbows are moving in on your space” Tristan Mathlay said, “I saw it yesterday and was super impressed!! Love this can’t wait to see more!!” Linda Mayekiso said, “A great start, however those are

19 #OwnYourTruth #OwnYourTruth 37 THE RAINBOW CROSSING WILL BE THE OFFICIAL START OF THE PRIDE MARCH not the inclusive colours. Were are the Trans colours? Where is the black and the brown? Can we start leading with INCLUSION!” Linda has a valid point, but imagine incorporating all the colours of the LGBTQIA+ acronym in one zebra crossing ... just wondering ... And then, of course we had the detractors ... Jennifer Davies Willis asked, “Who paid for this?” - Really! Seriously, a few tins of paint! The religious haters, of course crawled out of the woodwork again - Colbern Heaton: “I kinda think it is a big FU to God, coz that isn’t the rainbow of God’s promise in fact its celebrating everything God despises. Remember Sodom & Gomora ....” - sad. That other little quote from the good book comes to mind ... something about “Judge not ....” Wayne Feldman: “That roadmarkings (sic) is not in accordance with the law?? Turn capetown into a circus... (sic)” - boring. The City in its press statement did assure the likes of Wayne, because there’s always at least one, that “the paint used for the pedestrian crossing and Pink Route complies with the SANS standards for road markings.” Chet Gordon-Povey, lamented, from Paris, France, on the fact that the “gay village” is no more, commenting, “I understand the symbolism and location but sadly all bars nightclubs and restaurants are NOT there anymore. What happened to Crew Bar???? What happened to Amsterdam Bar??? What happened to HOT House???? What happened to the bar next door to Amsterdam bar ??? What happened to the lesbian dance bar on Somerset Road??? And the list goes on and on.....oh what happened to the bar opposite Manhattan???? What happened to Bronx, Angels and Detour???! Nothing replaced all these iconic spots in de Waterkant!!!!!!!!!!! Sydney and here in Paris we have these crossings but it’s in the thriving spots of the gay districts....sorry Cape Town it’s pretty but it’s 5 years too late, nothing happening there just Cafe Manhattan and that’s very straight friendly at best. Ohhhh I left out Beefcakes, a hen party treasure now.” Chet is right, but high rents, online pick-up sights and what seems to be a general apathy, amongst a host of other reasons, I guess, have killed De Waterkant as a “Gay” district, but it’s great to have the visibility, and acknowledgement that the queer community are a valuable part of the social demographic of our diverse city. Rainbow crossings are a feature in many major LGBTQIA+ friendly cities around the world, and Cape Town Pride welcomes this addition to Cape Town’s urban landscape, a project that was started by Cllr Ian McMahon some years ago. Cape Town Pride have already adopted the crossing as the official start point of the Pride Parade on the 4th March 2023 ... Pride supports LGBTQIA+ visibility in the city, and looks forward to the creation of more.

The SAMA nominated artist who performed at the Rugby 7's before a packed stadium in December to rapturous applause has a number of accolades to his name ... his debut album “BREAK THE RULES” was nominated in the BEST POP ALBUM category in 2019. He started at the age of 14 entering talent shows, he persevered and began writing his own songs, in an interview with Netwerk24 he said, "I grew up in Athlone and come from a home where there weren't funds to do things musically or send me to music schools. I had to acquire the skills on my own and I did any and everything to educate myself and get on to stages." This drive and determination has paid off with performances both locally as well as internationally in Spain, Finland, Sweden and more. Jarrad is also a Youth Ambassador for Cape Mental Health, saying "I always told myself that when I make it, I was not going to forget about the people and where I came from. I was a young boy looking for someone to inspire me once. I want to be that for someone." Jarrad regularly tours schools delivering his testimony. Jarrad married best friend Kim Wentzel in a private ceremony in September 2020... DOPE SAINT JUDE Dope Saint Jude is an electro-hip hop artist from Cape Town. Already at the age of four the kid from Elsie's River, Cape Town, knew that he wanted to become a singer. He was a natural and he was hooked. At Elsie's River High School he joined the Echo Band. (The Elsie's River Community of Hope and Opportunities) - They did jazz festivals, the TV program Hectic Nine 9 and participated in the popular High School Jam competition, where Craig won Best Male Vocalist in 2014 and 2016. In 2016, Grade 12, Craig joined the band Major7 SA, after which he went to study at Cape Music Institute for two years, graduating in November 2018. In 2019 Craig joined SA Idols and became one of the finalists, singing Dancing With A Stranger by Sam Smith ft Normani for which he received a Whoosem from SA Idols Judge Somizi . Craig is also the resident vocalist at Utopia Café and Lounge returning from Spain, where we did a Bruno Mars and Friends Tribute show for 6 months. 18 #OwnYourTruth #OwnYourTruth 42 HEADLINING ON THE PRIDE 2023 STAGE 3 FINGERS Hailing from Nyanga in Crossroads, the female vocal group 3 FINGERS began as a trio, Siyamthanda Matsolo, Unathi Bokolo and Fezeka Ferk Dlephu. Unfortunately, Fezeka left the group to pursue a solo career. This hit them hard. Whilst being a trio they created two tracks, Let’s Go and Sak’baweli produced by Wisemax. However, they maintain that their biggest highlight was in 2019, when through a competition they won at Zer021 Social Club, they were given an opportunity to perform the Cape Town Pride Festival Mardi Gras. After Fezeka left, they decided not to change their name, saying "as believers, we rather included the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the third finger is The Almighty." Fascinating right! They are now working on an EP consisting of seven tracks titled, Sivulele Singene that will be released soon. After their amazing performance at Pride 2019, it is no surprise that they are back on the Pride stage this year! 3 DIVAS 3 Fingers at Pride 2019 Three Divas / 3D will be Celebrating 13 years as a Drag/ Girl Group at Cape Town Pride this year. 18 THIS IS WHY WE STILL NEED PRIDE #OwnYourTruth 48 #OwnYourTruth Pride reminds us of the importance of celebrating the diversity within our community and the achievements that we have made … The fight to have our rights recognised by the South African government was a long and hard-fought struggle. The Apartheid government criminalised sexual intercourse between men under the common law crime of “sodomy” and “unnatural sexual offence”, as a part of the governments Immorality Act. In 1969, an amendment to the Immorality Act further prohibited men from engaging in any erotic conduct when there were more than two people present. This galvanised the formation of several groups to oppose and fight for our equality. There are some notable people who spearheaded this movement: Simon Nkoli, Beverley Ditsi and Edwin Cameron (who was later appointed to the high court), and many other workers and activists operating in their support. In the late 1980’s, Cape Town Pride’s Tommy Patterson organised one of the first “gay” fund-raising days called Shaft 8 which for the first time in the country, saw top South African talent performing at an LGBTI+ event. The event held in Johannesburg was a huge success. The first Pride march was held on 13 October 1990, as a part of a broader struggle to decriminalise homosexuality in South African law and a protest against Apartheid. Marchers feared for their safety, and many wore masks during the event. Simon Nkoli addressed the crowd, saying, “I am black, and I am gay. I cannot separate the two parts of me into primary or secondary struggles. They will be all one struggle”. In the following years Pride marches have become annual events and were held primarily in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Under South Africa’s ruling National Party from 1948 to 1994, homosexuality was a crime punishable by up to seven years in prison. In 1993, as a direct result of the activism, the interim Constitution prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In 1996 the constitution was approved and two years later the court gave its ruling on 9 October 1998 that the law prohibiting homosexual conduct between consenting adults in private violated the Constitution, made it legal. The court ruled that its order should be retroactively applied to 27 April 1994. In 1994, during his inauguration speech as president, Nelson Mandela stated the following: “They speak of a constitutional, democratic, political order in which, regardless of colour, gender, religion, political opinion or sexual orientation, the law will provide for the equal protection of all citizens.” South Africa’s Constitution became the first in the world to prohibit unfair discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. It thereby guarantees equality for gay and lesbian people. We are still taught that being gay is evil, especially by religious groups, meaning that the fight that each person with a sexuality different than the run-of-the-mill straight person has is a fight for acceptance, a fight for equality and a fight for being able to just be who you are. Whilst attitudes are changing, the process is slow, so the
