MEANINGFUL SERVICE. REAL CONNECTIONS. TRUE ADVENTURE.

My son loved every minute
and would do it again in a heartbeat!

“ ”Parent of Max E., Los Gatos, CA

Dear Friends,
For 31 years, Adventures Cross-Country (ARCC) has
been offering extraordinary experiences for teenagers.
I am extremely proud of the lasting impact that ARCC
students have had on people, on communities, and on the
environment around the world. Check out our “Spotlight
Projects” on the program pages to see some of the terrific
work that will be done by ARCC students this summer.
This year we are excited to be offering several exceptional
new programs:
»» The Uganda Service program will be working in rural

villages building desperately needed water catchment
systems to provide a more dependable water supply
for residents. We’ve been running our Gap programs
in Uganda for years and are just now opening up this
wonderful country to our high school participants.
»» The China Language Immersion and Service program
combines our years of experience running service
programs throughout China with our expertise teaching
language in an immersion environment.
We have also expanded our series of Combo Programs
so if you wish, you can now easily combine ARCC trips
to Ecuador & Peru, Vietnam/Cambodia & Thailand, and
Uganda & East Africa.
Of course we have a number of other programs available
and I’m certain we can find a program that will fit your
interests and needs.
I hope you will join us this summer for the adventure
of a lifetime!

Sincerely,

Scott von Eschen, President

WHY
ARCC?

SUPERB PROGRAM DESIGN

Superbly planned programs are a hallmark of Adventures Cross-Country.
ARCC programs are planned years in advance of their departures--a
monumental challenge--but one that pays off immensely for our students.

UNIQUE AND UNFORGETTABLE
EXPERIENCES

ARCC is committed to providing unique and life-changing experiences
that resonate deep within our students. ARCC students engage in intimate,
authentic encounters with the people, the cultures and the lands they visit.

RICH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

Education is an essential part of the ARCC experience. Lessons throughout
the program may be academic, in the form of the trip curriculum, or may
be experiential, delivered through immersion in new ideas and situations.

EXCEPTIONAL TRIP LEADERS

ARCC Trip Leaders are exceptional individuals of extraordinary character
and experience. Selected from many hundreds of applicants, ARCC leaders
are enthusiastic about serving others, and most importantly, helping our
teenagers thrive.

IMPECCABLE SAFETY RECORD

Our commitment to safety is the envy of the industry and we are very
proud of our safety record: in 31 years of operation, no ARCC student
has ever suffered an injury requiring an overnight hospital stay.

QUALITY PARTICIPANTS

ARCC students want to be on our programs and arrive ready to immerse
themselves in this extraordinary experience. We screen references from
every prospective student and only accept those we believe will be positive
and enthusiastic group members.

ARCC boasts over a fifty percent return rate for staff. Ranging from 21-32 years old, Parents of Genevieve B.,
our leaders have extensive experience in team leading, adventure travel, marine
biology, service, and language. Each ARCC program is led by one male and one Upper Montclair, NJ
female leader. In addition to these leaders, we also enlist professional outfitters
for our adventure activities such as rafting, surfing, sailing and SCUBA diving.

SELECTION

ARCC’s outstanding reputation in the industry brings us hundreds of staff
applications each year. We take careful steps to ensure we hire leaders with
extraordinary character and experience. We only hire new leaders after they
participate in a multi-stage interview/hiring process; this process includes a
detailed application, multiple reference checks and in-depth interviews. In addition,
all leaders must pass rigorous background checks in order to work for ARCC.

TRAINING

Every ARCC leader has training in emergency wilderness medicine and most
of our leaders are WFR certified (80 hours) or EMTs (120 hours). In addition to
the multitude of experiences our leaders bring to ARCC, leaders are required to
attend our ten-day intensive staff training focusing on trip safety, group dynamics,
logistics, leadership, communications, protocols, and emergency procedures.

STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

JAMIE OCKNER IN 2013, ARCC STUDENTS

PROJECT: “Trunks for Thailand” 6 DIFFERENT CONTINENTS.

AGE: 18  HOMETOWN: Bloomfield, Michigan OUR STUDENTS WERE
HIGH SCHOOL: Andover High School GREETED WARMLY IN OVER 20
LANGUAGES AND DIALECTS
MY FAVORITE ARCC MEMORY:

When we stayed at the orphanage Mae Maeh, the children were
so happy to see us because they rarely had visitors. There,
I connected with a six year old girl named Orapin. One day we
were drawing pictures with the kids, and I drew Orapin a picture
she could hang in her room so she would remember me. As I
began to draw, she pulled out her own piece of paper and began
copying my picture. When I wrote “best friends” on the top, she
did her best to copy my English and added her name in Thai at
the bottom of the picture.  We exchanged drawings and to this
day, I still have her picture hung up in my room.

HOW MY ARCC EXPERIENCE INSPIRED ME:

Staying at Mae Maeh, we immediately noticed their poor living
conditions. Seeing this made me feel grateful for what I have,
but also inspired me to do something to help these kids. When I
returned home, I began making and sculpting elephant pendants,
keychains, and pins, which I gave out with each donation made
to Trunks for Thailand. I decided money would be the best thing
for the orphanage because it could be used to better the living
conditions of the children. Since I started Trunks for Thailand,
I have raised $801 dollars, which I donated to the Mae Maeh
orphanage in 2013.

ADVICE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS:

Never take these experiences for granted and use this opportunity
to be more open-minded or to start a project of your own. Make
connections with other students on the program, children you
meet at orphanages and locals who help you along the way and
immerse yourself in the culture. But most of all, never forget
these experiences because they shape who you are and can
inspire you to do more.

Service adventures honor the desire to contribute. Offer a helping
hand in building a school for an indigenous community in Ecuador
and exchange a smile with a villager after a day of hard work. Care
for an elephant in a rehabilitation center or build a healthier stove in
the home of a Peruvian family. Join a group of like-minded people
who wish to serve and make real connections with African villagers,
native Hawaiians, gentle Thai monks or exuberant Fijian children.
Participate in projects that seek to improve the lives of individuals
and communities and take satisfaction in knowing that you have
truly made a difference.

The ARCC Gap Semesters are an opportunity to live, work, learn Emily O., St. Helena, CA
and explore in some of the greatest classrooms on earth.

ARCC Gap Semesters have a rich academic fabric complementing
each and every location, highlighting regional issues that are
directly linked to global challenges. As a small community, we
embark on a journey of discovery of people, places, cultures
and ideas. Over the course of our travels, we examine five
essential themes:

• Literacy & Education

• Public Health

• Urbanization & the Movement of Peoples

• Environment & Conservation

• Microfinance & Economic Growth

To accomplish this, we go behind the scenes to meet with local
experts, field researchers, scholars, community leaders and
government officials to better understand these topics.

On an ARCC Gap Semester, we immerse ourselves into the
culture through homestays, service work, teaching and exchange.
Going beyond the weekend visit, we take the time to plant our
feet in each location, becoming part of the community at large.
Eating, sleeping and working amongst the local people, we are
welcomed to the community as friends. Working in partnership
with area leaders, we pinpoint worthwhile service projects and
collaborate with community members to achieve a common goal.
Refurbishing a school, building an athletic field, or working with
orphans, our hard work supplements our education on the five
major themes, but also reminds us that we are part of something
bigger. Often the magnitude of the experience doesn’t reveal
itself until much later, after our return home.

ARCC offers Gap semesters in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Each program is an academic semester (3 months) with a defined
curriculum and leadership development component. College
credit is available.

GAP SEMESTER Gap Africa explores the majesty,
cultures, and challenges of three
East African nations: Kenya,
Uganda and Tanzania. We take
advantage of our unparalleled access
and gain a unique education in this
fascinating expanse of Africa. Seeing the
eager smiling faces in a Masai primary
school while teaching English in an
overcrowded classroom with limited
school supplies, we feel the scarcity of
education. Sitting down to interview
farmers from a community teaching
farm, which strives to bring personal
and financial independence, we see a
solution. Building a soccer field hand
in hand with local players, converting
an old dirt lot into a community
centerpiece, we feel the power of
service. Witnessing a family of elephants
trek through the savanna of the Masai
Mara at sunrise, we experience one of
life’s unforgettable moments. Never
again will you look at education in quite
the same way.

Program Highlights:

• Join Biologists and Rangers in
