Voting Starts: January 24 at noon | Voting Closes: January 27 at 2:00pm 30+ YEARS OF SNOW SCULPTING Photo: Sarah McLear, Breckenridge Ski Resort Snowmaking + Sustainability at the International Snow Sculpture Championships How Breckenridge Ski Resort snowmaking experts create perfect sculpting snow. THE BEST SNOW ON EARTH This year’s competition showcases 12 teams representing eight countries, each handcarving a 12-foot-tall solid block of snow into a detailed sculpture. In order to get these impressive blocks situated in the Riverwalk Center parking lot, event organizers with the Town of Breckenridge work closely with the Breckenridge Ski Resort snowmaking team. The resort snowmaking team uses the fan guns over five to six cold nights to create giant piles of snow in the Colorado Mountain College parking lot. Town of Breckenridge crews load the snow into dump trucks and haul it over to the Riverwalk Center where it’s loaded into block molds and then stomped down by volunteers to remove any air pockets. “The resort and town work together lockstep to pull this one off,” says John Anicito, Senior Manager for Mountain Operations at Breckenridge Ski Resort “It’s really fun to be out there and to see this event come together.” Keeping up with the snowmaking times, the new snow gun technology is part of Breckenridge Ski Resort’s recent sustainability investments. The resort’s snowmaking program has evolved over the years to stay current with energy-efficient snowmaking practices and to speak to Vail Resort’s larger EpicPromise commitment to achieving a zero net operating footprint by 2030. Over the past few years, Breckenridge Ski Resort installed 220 low-energy stick guns that use compressed air with a fixed nozzle size to make more snow with less energy by maximizing cold-weather windows. “For skiing, we want snow that’s dry but can still be pushed around easily on the runs,” Anicito says. “But for snow sculpting, we want a heavier snow with more water content to ensure that it will compact.” “It is always impressive to see what these folks can make out of a block of snow,” says Sara Lococo, Senior Communications Manager Breckenridge Ski Resort, “We love to celebrate with signature events that connect the mountain and the town. Ullr Fest and the International Snow Sculpture Championships are great winter events to celebrate snow and the Breckenridge experience.” 2. DENMARK: HARMONY BONDS Steffie Pederson - Team Captain Gleb Dusavitskiy, Jan Lastovicka, Ditte Busch Unity, balance, and interconnection, a dance of shapes and lines. The sculpture's circular elements symbolize a continuous and harmonious cycle, representing the interconnectedness of everything. The forms embody the idea that elements find unity and strength through their bonds with one another. The relationships and connections that bind us all, emphasizing the beauty that arises when forms come together in perfect harmony. Testament to the enduring power of unity, reminding us of the strength we find in our connections with others and the world around us. CHINA: HOME GARDEN IS EVER GONE Wang Haifeng - Team Captain MengXianguo, Yang Hao, XuDengjun The theme of this work is to call for human protection of the natural environment. It tells the story of a bear hugging a big tree but feeling empty. It turned out that the tree had been cut down by humans, and the little bear closed its eyes with a sad and lost expression, thinking of its former home in its head. The 33rd Annual International Snow Sculpture Championships presented by Toyota Teams Are: 4. GERMANY-BAVARIA: FLOAT - Zero Gravity Series Franziska Agrawal - Team Captain Gabriela Kulenkampff, Lisa Webster, Daniel Miller-Lionberg Geometry is the music we experience with our eyes. (Music is the geometry we experience with our ears). The sculpture’s subject lies in the geometric creation of order, comprising the reduction to the maximum - ‘aesthetic essence', which is attained when nothing more can be taken away, and all that is left is what it is - influenced by concepts of concrete Art and minimalism. It's about balance and the transformation of what is, dealing with matters of attachment, detachment and temporariness of existence in time/public space. Once again we will go even further to the limit and try to create seemingly impossible magic in the snow - within the designs of the zerogravity series we will try to make snow hover. INDIA-CALLISTO: TEMPORAL MELTDOWN Zahoor Din Lone - Team Captain Mridul Upadhyay, Suhail Mohmad Khan, Matt Seeley It is a testament to our collective struggle with time anxiety. The melting clock is a reminder of the fleeting nature of time and the anxiety that can come with it, as if time is passing too quickly. It is also a commentary on the way we perceive time. The other two clocks represent the eternal and relative nature of time and we just pass through it as a fraction. We make our own clocks, a clock in molten surrender, symbolising our relentless apprehension of time's passage, evoking overwhelming deadlines for doing and achieving. ECUADOR: THE DANCE OF THE WIND Kevin Alexander Estrella Correa - Team Captain Alavaro Xavier Ganzalez Negrete, Carlos Emilio Pozo Ruiz, Erika Jeanine Carrion Paredes The wind caresses us, shelters us, devours us, and struggles to leave us a message, a voice that flames in our body every moment of the day. Blessed wind that lifts me up with its howl every dawn, that shelters me every nightfall, tireless and inexhaustible as if its work would never be turned off. The wind never stops caressing the world at every moment, leaving us with its romantic music when shaking the leaves of trees and hum of its strength when going through glass and walls as if it wanted to stop for a moment in its path. Each new-to-the-world gesture flows from a lifetime of thought and deliberate disregard of boundaries. His sculptures grace public spaces, dwellings and gardens around the world including recent heroic sized dancing trios at the Cornell Arts and Entertainment Complex in Joplin MO and in Silverthorne CO at the performing arts center. Harold’s work is on public display and in collections in ten western cities and the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland. USA-WISCONSIN: ANNUS MIRABILIS Brett Tomczak - Team Captain Jeff Shawhan, Gregory Brulla, Nolan Shawhan The foundation of modern physics can be traced to a specific point in history – 1905. That’s the year that Albert Einstein published four papers in the Annalen der Physik (Annals of Physics) which revolutionized science’s understanding of the fundamental concepts of space, time, mass and energy. Because Einstein published these papers in a single year, 1905 is called his annus mirabilis (miracle year). Our sculpture will pay tribute to Einstein, by sculpting his wonderfully wild hair and weathered face on the front of our block. The real interest will lie on the back our our piece, though, which will offer viewers a glimpse into (our vision of) Einstein's incredible mind. Elements of his discoveries will be layered into the back of the piece creating a window to view his amazing discoveries.
