Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

Summary EDP International Stakeholder Conference
Thursday, 8 September 2022

Forest fires affected many aspects of life, even abroad. There are huge challenges to
reducing, recovering, and resilience the earth, one of them is the solar plane. There is a
method to calculate the impacts of the impacts called LCA. This method is the only relevant
tool starting at the design phase to decarbonize. There is a huge need to accelerate the pace
for standards harmonization and also stakeholder training to implement this method.

Mr. Ryding or Sven-Olof Ryding presents the stage that has to be done for sustainable
development to identify the different areas to start work on standardization, one of which is
LCA. ECO Platform and GED net are great networking that declares this environment label.
LCA is needed because we need something to keep in mind, to understand the ISO standards,
especially in type II and type III. The presence of ISO 14029 gives a lot of practical guidance
on how to harmonize work between EPD program operators. On the other hand, the pros and
cons also appear in ISO implementation, so we have to calculate which regulation or ISO
that can be implemented for your company.

Topic 1: EDPs as a Policy / Compliance Instrument (Speaker: Dolla, Olympia as
Sustainability Construction Manager at Eurima)

The speaker on this topic is Miss Dolla who attends online meetings. The title that Miss
Dolla presents is Understanding EU Regulation for EDP. From 2019 until March 2022, the
EU regulatory framework is going to green deal, circular economy, spring package to address
environmental challenges, CPR (specific product regulation) to implement ESPR (umbrella
framework in case no pr. Specific legislation) measures to construction products.

EPD International AB 1

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

The building material is the minimum criteria to meet the tendency to reduce the number
of houses. So what is the difference between ESPR and CPR?

ESPR (Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation):
1. Focus on the product design
2. New requirements to make products
3. Product-specific information requirements will ensure consumers know the env.
Impacts
4. All products will have DPD
5. Other regulations can regulate the implementations

CPR (Construction Product Regulation):
1. Provides a list of rules and requirements that shall be met to sell products
2. The product is assessed/verified

EPD International AB 2

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

3. There is a revision for environmental sustainability. Especially on the digital
transition, improve competitiveness, overall the built of environment, and efficiency

Mandatory standards for this CPR revision also include a declaration of LCA indicators
to be implemented according to this approach e.g climate change (total/fossil / biogenic, etc).
Will have additional indicators for LCA, like particulate matter emissions, Ionizing radiation,
freshwater, etc. Revision of the CPR rules includes verifying and verifying the body to assess,
update and apply the process, modeling use, and correct use of IT tools. To facilitate the
updates and verification, digitalization is used to provide information to customers,
downstream economic operators, product databases, DPP, choices between products based
on sustainability performance, etc. Connection for ESPR and product labeling is required.
Part of the provisions of the ESPR and its connection to Product Specific, etc.

Questions:
1. Communicate with each other institutions so there are no double regulations
2. Product information is the important thing for the environment’s sustainability
3. If you want to distribute your product in the EU, you have to comply the EU regulations

Topic 2: Digitalisation strategies and LCA/EPD tools
1st theme: Why Digital?

1. Why digital? to find out quickly the amount of available data and information. In
addition, data is not scalable, and the market needs a complete but fast data
availability platform.

2. For example, Unilever has carbon labeling on its products
3. Digitization is needed because this can improve the quality of existing products.
4. Digital has 3 issues; format, function, and usability

a. Format; in LCA and EPD. Digitization can help interpret data. Example of
calculating GHG emission data

b. Function;

c. usefulness; assist WRI and organizations in performing data calculations, and
preventing EPD data fraud. so we need to accept the availability of digital
technology that can support and make it easier to solve problems

2nd Theme
EPD in BIM - Digitalization as a Chance

1. Digitization is used for; visualization, calculation, compiling LCA, documentation,
simulation, and design tools.

2. The dynamic digitalization phenomenon causes changes in various tools and forms
3. BIM can store a variety of data products and simplify the needs of architects to

integrate data. BIM is also an eco portal and can present LCA data.

EPD International AB 4

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

4. Data can be accessed easily, accessed by owners and non-owners
5. Company data; have various types and combinations of data, have different forms

and the data issued is more specific
6. Example of an EPD BIM project using the Revit app with a plugin that helps resolve

EPD data
7. Report EPD Secretariat type is Automated and allows multiple data

Important News of PCR
1. Update version 1.2 of PCR 2019 for construction products to comply with our general
program instructions version 4.0. The important changes are:
a. Clarified rules on co-product and waste allocation
b. Updated characterization factors for the GWP-GHG Indicator
c. Annex 2 added to clarify how to calculate GWP biogenetic results
d. Changed and clarified rules on EPDs of multiple products including
classification etc.
2. PCR news is important because:
a. Have a new set of default indicators been implemented for non-construction
products (for more information go to www.environdec.com)
b. Pilot ongoing development of PCR rolling stock for social product declaration

Topic 3: Harmonization/standardization and innovation in LCA/EPD
The perspectives to become a globally accepted and trusted instrument for decision-making in
various applications, EPDs will need to further align and comply with existing and new
standardization and legislation requirements, whilst not losing the pace to innovate.

Speaker 1: M. Blumberg & S. Smedley - Generic Data Bundles ECO-Platform/Building
Transparency
Providing a consistent data foundation for sustainable construction worldwide

1. Building transparency is multiple fostering to better building future by addressing
embodied carbon’s role in climate change
- Mission: to provide the open access data and tools necessary to enable broad and
swift action across the building industry in addressing embodied carbon’s role in
climate change
- Tools: EC3, Tally
- Lead sponsors: amazon Microsoft Autodesk, interface, Skanska, Breakthrough
Energy, and CleanBC

2. Green building activity continuous grow is the technology LCA data of construction
product

3. EPD still does not have a sufficient geographic project
4. Bridging the data gap is to provide free data and o support effort data
5. Key partner for the stakeholder is the foundation so the partners have created a governance

organization. once callynance which has been created among governance with partnership
6. How to develop global embodied carbon data? (for the first identify the building and

approximately). But the key question is how really to develop a global embodied carbon
data set for construction materials
7. The approach for building transparency from 2022 until 2023 is:

a. Devpiloting and pilot methodological and technical foundation/approach (2022)
- LCA methodology modeling principles for building material
- Process for exporting LCA data into both Open EPD and ILCD+EPD
- Define approach that determines the material and the scope of database
- Establish technical infrastructure for database

EPD International AB 6

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

- Provide LCA data in open EPD and ILCD+EPD format for approx 25
building (pilot study)

b. Provide approx 1500 LCA datasets for building materials in OpenEPD and ILCD
+ EPD formats (2023)
- Determine database scope via reference evaluations regarding the
composition of build environment (building LCAs) for a specified array of
geographical regions and use types (residential, commercial, and industrial)
- Develop LCA datasets for approx 1500 building materials
- Implement technical infrastructure that allow acces to datasets in both
formats
- LCA dataset documentation in a variable database background report
- Dataset verification and release

Speaker 2: J. Hanafi. Ph.D. - PT Life Cycle Indonesia
EPD Trend and role as an Environmental Label in Southeast Asia

1. The labeling of environmental products is trending because of the growing demand for
market-driven data. Growing the market demand:

EPD International AB 7

2. Popurating in Indonesai is Carbon Tax

3. Setting methods and baseline for carbon disclosure

4. EPD in Indonesian Environmental Performance Rating (Asindicator off EPD such as
rating in Pupuk kaltim)

EPD International AB 8

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

5. ISO technical 14029:2022 to mutual recognition arrangement (MRA)

Speaker 3: M. Elwany - Dcarbon Egypt
MENA region; an emerging perspective.

1. Current status in Mena Region (EPD is mainly for people here who are not interested in

EPD because of the exports of goods and services in 2020)

2. Challenges of LCA/EPD in MENA
a. Data collections/records are almost non-existent
- Most companies in MENA do not monitor all the inputs and outputs of their
supply chain
- The lack of these data urges the LCA consultants to use assumptions that
lessen the accuracy of the LCA study
b. High costs of conducting LCA

EPD International AB 9

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

- The fees for conducting an LCA are not met with easiness in many countries
in the MENA region

- The difference in USD/Euro currencies and most local currencies in the
MENA region is a lot - this makes modeling tools license very expensive

- This urges the consultants to perform the services at a relatively high cost
c. Lack of trained personnel

- Multinational companies in MENA are the ones that opt to conduct LCA
and they do so through the main headquarters which are based in
Europe/USA

- Companies based in MENA Region cannot access local LCA practitioners
as they are minimal

- Thoughgh EPD Egypt thrives to expound its capacity building, still, it is a
long way to go

d. Lack of awareness and thus policies (These mean LCA thinking concepts are not
at all common in the MENA Region, and as industries understand that if not a
national policy regulation, it is not necessary to implement an LCA)

3. The certification related to embodied carbon is very tiny compared to Europe if we also
look at the picture:

4. Possible solutions to the issue:
- Creating general awareness for emerging markets in their language (workshops,
training, etc)

EPD International AB 10

Summary of EPD International Stakeholder Conference

- Creating national regulations or policies through engaging with policy and
decision-makers

- Expanding the practice in MENA or Africa can help create prices that are more
affordable to local companies and facilities the process of data gathering due to the
absence of language barriers

- Provide low-cost tools and database for emerging markets
- Supporting low-cost tools and database and data centers

5. The MENA region has its particularity, things are changing from COP 27-28, EPD as
baseline MENA DCarbonization roadmap.
