line

In The Last Supper, The lines all point to the
Leonardo has used a center of the picture where the
combination of vertical, oval face of Jesus is framed by
horizontal and diagonal lines a window. The lines work to
to arrange the scene. Jesus make sure we know who is the
and his disciples, designed most important character in
with mostly rounded lines, this story. Leonardo's lines
are seated at the table in a also balance the painting, so
room with windows, all that the setting on the right-
composed from straight and hand side of Jesus is echoed
diagonal lines. on the left, even though the

figures and faces are different.

2

SHAPE

Leonardo has used shapes to represent characters and
surrounding objects. The shapes are used in this
painting to create the feeling of space like the
squares and rectangles are the parts of the subjects in
the building such as, food, table, and windows.
Leonardo could combined these basic shapes with
value of color to create the three-dimensional
painting effect on the flat surface of the wall of the
refectory.

FORM 4

To understand the basic concept of form
throughout The Last Supper, Let's take a
look all of characters in the picture. Figures
appearing to be three-dimensional because
of their forms, they are directed towards
each other, each of them has its own
position, which makes them interacting
with each other at different angles. For
example, there are a lot of perspective lines
that are going to the vanishing point on the
picture. It can be seen that all the
perspectives are going to the center of the
painting, which is the Jesus figure, his head
if more specific.

COLOR

Leonardo tried to create an ambient where we could feel the divinity of Jesus and it very holy
atmosphere. However, the colors are not bright as they used to be due to poor conditions. He used the
colors in a sad and dark way with a lot of shadows and sad color like blue, white and gray. For
example, Jesus wears blue and red cloths which blue signifies the sky and the purity, the truth,
whereas red signifies fire, danger and also passionate heart. This combination of colors may
correspond to the holly spirit of Jesus and the danger that about to come. All the colors except the
clothes are calming and create peaceful atmosphere.

TEXTURE The Last Supper painted on the wall of the
refectory, or dining room, for the holy men at
6 Santa Maria Della Grazie in Milan, so the
original surface that Leonardo has used to paint
on was cement wall which provide us the hard
feeling of hard cement texture when we look at
the art work. Texture can also create by the
combination of shape form and color. For
example, in the painting we can see the
different textures like the one of the tablecloth,
surface of the food, and even the skin of every
characters.

SPACE

Normally, space is defined by shapes and forms. In the Last Supper,
we can see the positive space such as, the table, food, and characters.
The negative space is the atmosphere around the room such as, the
space in the room of the painting. The illusion of space is created by
shadows and colors. We can see that there are shadows on the wall
and under the table, which adds to the effect. Moreover, the light is
coming from the back windows, highlighting Jesus and the darkness
of back wall which create atmosphere to space of this picture.

7

VALUE

In the painting the value is nearly dark like natural sunlight. The
balance in value of The Last Supper is mild it has calm colors
that create a good atmosphere to the picture. The most important
thing we can notice that this work is really created by Leonardo
because the unique value technique created by Leonardo, he was
the first artist that implemented “chiaroscuro” (tonal move from
dark to light in a graduated way) and “sfumato” (blurring of
edges of shadows). We can see both techniques used in this
painting: blurred shadows of the background landscape and
gradually blended tone from dark to light on the walls.
