In this edition of UMC Lifelines, you will find an in-depth article about a groundbreaking procedure provided by our team members at the UMC Lions Burn Care Center. This article focuses on the innovative RECELL system, which uses a sample of the patient’s skin to create spray-on skin cells. UMC’s burn surgeons have used this technology since 2020, producing life-changing results for patients with second- and third-degree burns. I encourage you to take a moment to read this story, which highlights the world-class care offered by our team at Nevada’s only Verified Burn Center. Burn Care Technology Offers Life-Changing Results When meeting Astyn Levy, you would never know that the 12-year-old girl suffered life-threatening burns covering nearly 50 percent of her body two years ago. Thanks to the specialized care she received at the UMC Lions Burn Care Center, she has virtually no scars or any other signs of the second- and third-degree burns she sustained when a propane grill exploded in her backyard. “It sounded like an airplane crashed. It shook the entire town,” said Astyn’s mother, Britney Levy, explaining that the grill explosion sent flames 40 feet into the air, leaving Astyn with severe burns across her face, hands, arms and legs. “Her legs were burned so badly that her shorts melted into her skin. I thought she was going to die.” With Astyn’s life hanging in the balance, she was rushed via helicopter to UMC, which offers Nevada’s only Verified Burn Center. After stabilizing Astyn in the UMC Trauma Center and performing surgery to remove the burned tissue from her wounds, UMC’s clinical experts gave Astyn’s family valuable hope during their greatest time of need. Dr. Syed Saquib, Medical Director of the UMC Lions Burn Care Center, met with Astyn’s parents and recommended an innovative procedure that would ultimately provide the best possible medical outcome for the young girl. Spray-On Skin Cells Patients like Astyn have experienced impressive results from the RECELL system used by UMC’s burn surgeons. Designed to reduce the need for traditional skin grafts among patients with burn wounds, the system uses a sample of the patient’s own skin to generate spray-on skin cells that are personalized to the individual patient. For many patients, this can significantly accelerate the healing process. (continued on next page) by Scott Kerbs 6
“This has revolutionized the way we care for burn patients,” said Dr. Saquib. “We take a very small sample of the skin, generally less than the size of a business card. With this sample, we’re able to isolate the patient’s own epidermal cells, concentrate them and spray them onto the patient’s burn wounds.” UMC has provided patients with access to the RECELL system since 2020, and it is now frequently used by the hospital’s burn surgeons to treat second- and third-degree burns. The system allows surgeons to close large second-degree burns much more quickly while offering improved cosmetic results and a reduced need for painful dressing changes, Dr. Saquib said. When treating patients with more severe third-degree burns, this technology reduces the amount of healthy skin needed to perform traditional skin grafts. “With these procedures, we don’t have to use as much of the patient’s own skin, which improves recovery times and decreases the risk of infection and other complications.” Dr. Saquib said. “This technology helps our patients recover quicker and get back to their lives sooner.” Astyn is just one of the many patients who have benefited from this cutting-edge therapy, and her impressive recovery now serves as a valuable benchmark for UMC’s burn care experts. “At the UMC Lions Burn Care Center, we have a team of more than 100 burn care professionals who dedicate their careers to caring for patients just like Astyn,” Dr. Saquib said. “As the state’s only Verified Burn Center, we have a responsibility to provide our community with access to the latest clinical innovations to support the healing process.” Rapid Recovery Prior to receiving treatment with the RECELL system at UMC, Astyn was expected to face a long road to recovery. “We were initially looking at 38 to 42 weeks in the hospital,” Britney said, explaining that Astyn, then only 10 years old, remained in critical condition, requiring a ventilator to support her breathing. “We thought it would be weeks before she was even able to start walking again.” (continued on next page) Kerry Bubolz, President and CEO of the Vegas Golden Knights, Astyn Levy, and Deryk Engelland, former Knights defenseman, stand together during the "Player of the Day" event at City National Arena. 7

Aided by her strong will and the high level of care she received at UMC, Astyn walked out of the hospital on her own just 10 days after being transported to UMC via helicopter. After Dr. Saquib used the RECELL technology to treat Astyn’s wounds, she began to show rapid signs of recovery. As Astyn healed, she received round-theclock care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at UMC Children’s Hospital. Within a few days, she no longer needed breathing support from a ventilator. While still unable to speak at first, she began writing “thank you” on a notepad to convey her gratitude toward the doctors and nurses. On day seven, she started to walk, determined to regain her mobility. “She walked 30 laps around the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit that day,” Britney said. “It was nothing short of a miracle.” Astyn was determined to get better quickly so she could attend one of her favorite events of the year: the annual Clark County Fair & Rodeo in her hometown of Logandale. “I really wanted to get better so I could go, but I didn’t know if I would be able to,” Astyn said. Just two days after being discharged from the hospital, Astyn found herself enjoying carnival rides at the fair alongside her family. After leaving the hospital, Astyn continued her rapid recovery, requiring only a few outpatient visits with Dr. Saquib to track her progress. Within one month, her burns had healed almost completely, and today there are virtually no signs of the life-threatening burn injuries she sustained. “She doesn’t have a scar on her body,” Britney said. “You wouldn’t know in a million years that she was burned.” Part of the UMC Family Several months after leaving the hospital, Astyn had the unique opportunity to join UMC and the Vegas Golden Knights for a special “Player for a Day” event at City National Arena. She and many other former patients from UMC Children’s Hospital signed contracts with the NHL team before joining staff from the Vegas Golden Knights on the ice for skating lessons. In October of 2023, Astyn reunited with Dr. Saquib during the UMC Foundation’s Evening of Hope Gala, thanking the burn surgeon for making her recovery possible. “I ran up to him and gave him a hug,” Astyn said. “I was so happy to see him again because he saved my life and took such good care of me.” For Dr. Saquib, the reunion was equally moving. “After caring for her and seeing the extent of her injuries, it was such a rewarding experience to see her fully healed and enjoying the event with her family,” Dr. Saquib said. “Astyn will always be part of our UMC family. Her incredible recovery continues to inspire our team as we work together to provide our patients with the highest level of care and life-changing results.” 8
