UMC has grown to become Nevada’s premier academic medical center, preparing our community’s future physicians, nurses and many other medical professionals for rewarding careers in health care. UMC works alongside a variety of Nevada higher education institutions to build the next generation of health care professionals in our community. With nearly three decades of collaboration, the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) serves as one of UMC’s oldest and most trusted academic partners. Together, we have trained thousands of students. In 2025 alone, more than 400 CSN students received in-depth training from UMC’s world-class team. At UMC, we deliver hands-on instruction for CSN students in a variety of key areas, including nursing, paramedic/EMT training, cardiorespiratory, clinical laboratory sciences and other valuable disciplines. In this edition of “UMC Lifelines,” we have included an article focused on UMC’s collaboration with CSN, including details about the many CSN graduates who now deliver Nevada’s highest level of care as UMC employees. We look forward to continuing this valuable academic partnership as we work together to build a healthier future for the people of Southern Nevada. In addition to training the health care workers of tomorrow, UMC also remains committed to safeguarding the health of our community through injury prevention initiatives. In this issue of “UMC Lifelines,” you will find a helpful infographic explaining the dangers of pavement burns during the summer months in Southern Nevada. Each summer, our team at the UMC Lions Burn Care Center cares for an alarming number of patients with severe burns from the pavement and other hot surfaces. As temperatures rise, dangerous pavement burns can happen in a matter of seconds. Please make sure to protect yourself and your loved ones this summer. Our team at Nevada’s only Verified Burn Center is always here to take care of you, but we want you to spend the summer with your family, not ours at UMC.Sincerely,Mason Van HouwelingUMC CEOMason’s Message Mason’s Message

As Southern Nevada’s population and economy continue to expand, a strong health care workforce is vital to meet the growing needs of our community. Training the next generation of health care professionals is an important state-wide effort, and one innovative partnership isproviding an expanding pipeline of homegrown talent.Since 1999, the Engelstad School of Health Sciences at College of Southern Nevada (CSN) and UMC have collaborated to provide thousands of students with hands-on clinical experiences before they graduate. The goal is to expose students to what life is like outside of the classroom.“It was eye opening,” said Victoria Ornelas, a fourth-year student in CSN’s Cardiorespiratory Science Program. Ornelas grew up in Las Vegas and found her calling as child, supporting her brother through severe asthma. With her graduation on the horizon, Ornelas jumped at the chance to do a clinical rotation at UMC’s Level I Trauma Center. “The experience was invaluable. It helped me improve my critical thinking skills and taught me how to be fast on my feet and work with a team,” Ornelas beamed. In the ClassroomFrom nursing to laboratory sciences, CSN offers a wide variety of degree and certification programs for students looking to start or grow their careers in health care.Janice Glasper, Dean of CSN’s Englestad School of Health Sciences, said the school is comprised of students from all backgrounds, ages and income levels. Many students are local and want to stay in Southern Nevada.“I’m proud of our programs. We provide our students with a quality education in their hometown thanks to our incredible faculty and our advanced training equipment,” Glasper added. The advanced equipment includes CSN’s Cardiorespiratory Simulation Lab, which is the only one of its kind in world, said Program Director Tracy Sherman. She leads hundreds of students through simulations each year using a specialized robotic patient that students can practice various procedures on, including breathing treatments, intubation and even blood draws.by Emily Antuna, UMC Public Relations CoordinatorFrom the Classroom to Clinical ExcellenceInnovative Partnership Between UMC and CSN Trains Next Generation of Health Care Professionals“We can put students into very complex situations and help them perform their way out without any potential harm to patients,” Sherman said.According to Sherman, when it comes to hands-on clinical experiences for students, there is no comparison to UMC. “UMC runs the gamut of patient care. Our students have access to a wide range of patients from premature babies all the way to geriatrics, from trauma to anything in between,” Sherman said. Both Sherman and Dean Glasper agreed while state-of-the-art simulation can prepare students for many scenarios, interactions with real patients at UMC become some of the most formative teaching moments.Mark Britton, UMC Respiratory Care Practicioner and CSN graduate, sets up a ventilator in UMC’s Level I Trauma Center. 4

Filling the GapsIn 2025, UMC provided hands-on training to 419 CSN students through clinical rotations in a variety of key programs, including nursing, paramedic/EMT, cardiorespiratory, clinicallaboratory and other areas of study. Noel Madic, Clinical Director for Education Services at UMC, said partnerships with institutions like CSN help to address shortages of health care workers in Nevada.“When people hear about shortages in health care, physicians are usually the first group mentioned, but the industry is multidisciplinary. There are many different people involved in one patient’s care, and it’s important that we focus on growing every discipline while working with partners like CSN to identify where there may be additional needs in the future,” Madic said.Madic said students who do clinical rotations at UMC are often hired shortly after graduation. “We find CSN graduates have a much shorter orientation time, primarily because this is where they learned. It creates a better overall experience for our patients,” Madic said.Life After Graduation“I was really excited when I got the call,” said Mark Britton, Respiratory Care Practitioner at UMC. Britton was hired not long after his graduation from CSN in 2023. During his clinical rotations, he was trained by 2006 CSN graduate Maribel Thiel, an Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner at UMC. Britton said he’s now come full circle, training his own CSN students from time to time.“Working in trauma, anything can come through those doors, so you need to be prepared.” Britton said. “I try to instill the same guiding principles that Maribel taught me,” Britton smiled. As she nears her graduation, current CSN student Victoria Ornelas said learning from former students at UMC like Mark Britton and Maribel Thiel was inspiring.“We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this program, so seeing former students end up at such a well-respected facility drives excitement in me. I hope I can make a difference for patients like they do in the future,” Ornelas said.Cardiorespiratory students practice intubation on a mannequin at College of Southern Nevada’s Englestad School of Health Sciences. Cardiorespiratory student Victoria Ornelas (left) demonstrates proper intubation techniques to Program Director Tracy Sherman (right) in the Cardiorespiratory Simulation Lab at College of Southern Nevada’s Englestad School of Health Sciences. “We encourage our learners to demonstrate not just sympathy, but empathy as well. That’s hard to do with a robot,” Dean Glasper laughed.5
