Dark Chocolate: Delicious and Nutritious

Everyone loves chocolate, right? Good news for all the
chocolate lovers out there: chocolate, specifically
dark chocolate, can be incorporated into a healthy and
nutritious diet! The cocoa bean, from which this delicious
treat originates, is actually not even a bean. This misnomer
can cause some confusion. In fact, the cocoa bean is a
seed from the fruit of a cacao tree. Like many other plant
derivatives, this seed possesses many healthy qualities. For
example, the primary ingredient in dark chocolate is cocoa.
Cocoa is chock full of free-radical-fighting antioxidants known
as flavonoids. Flavonoids are thought to help lower blood
pressure, cholesterol and reduce other risk factors associated
with heart disease.

In order to get the most “bang for your buck” when choosing
the right type of dark chocolate, there are a few things to
look for as you peruse the potentially overwhelming selection
of different dark chocolates. The first thing to pay attention
to, in order to help narrow down your search and identify
the chocolate with the most flavonoids, is to look for dark
chocolate that is without alkali. Another way this could be
labeled is that the chocolate product will say it has not been
“dutched.” Additionally, dark chocolate should contain
at least 40 to 70 percent cocoa bean or what could be
alternatively listed as “cacao.”

Furthermore, do not liken the health properties of dark
chocolate to all types of chocolate. Milk chocolate, for
example, is not a good source of antioxidants. Milk binds to
the antioxidants and makes their free-radical-fighting benefits
unavailable. And while chocolate — yes dark chocolate
too — contains both saturated and unsaturated fat, it does
not appear to increase blood cholesterol levels. However, as
with most everything, moderation is key! The daily serving size
recommendation for dark chocolate is 1 ounce. So the next
time someone questions your daily intake of 1 ounce of dark
chocolate, just remind them that studies have shown dark
chocolate has heart-protecting properties. What more reason
do you need to indulge in this sweet and antioxidant-rich
delicacy?

Join us for our Mother’s Day Chocolate
Making Class on May 4 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Registration opens April 10 and space is limited.
