When I was interviewed recently for this evening’s Banquet and asked
what impressed me most about working for the local Agudah for almost

50 years, I gave the standard stock answers about all we do for the
community etc. I knew if I said that I can’t wait to hit 50 years because

slaves go free in Yovel it would not have made the final cut.
However, what I really wanted to say was the following:

Many years ago, at a Board meeting, the possibility to a new community
project was brought up and discussed. One board member pointed out,
that due to city politics, with the name of Agudath Israel behind it ……
the project didn’t stand a chance of succeeding. To this sad but accurate
statement, the Rosh Yeshiva, Horav Avrohom Chaim Levin ‫– שליט"א‬
may he have a ‫ – רפואה שלמה‬said: “If the community will benefit from

the program we should do it and leave the name of Agudah out of it.
Agudath Israel is here to serve klal Yisroel not to put
feathers in its cap or toot its own horn” (probably
not his exact words but the message was clear).

Mr. Interviewer, that mindset is what has impressed me most,
and it has been the driving force behind my working for
Agudath Israel – and the klal - all these years. Iy”H it
will continue that way for many more years to come.

Mazel Tov along with sincere feelings of gratitude and respect to all the
visionaries of each generation – including tonight’s honorees - who have

given of their time, experience and resources to help the Agudah
continue to grow and fulfill its mandate to serve klal Yisroel. May your

efforts be a source of bracha to you and yours in the years to come.
