Congregation Beth Israel Book 2020v1

In Memoriam

5780-2019

Congregation Beth Israel

Scottsdale, Arizona

My Dear Friends;

Hamakom yinachem etchem…May you be comforted by God among all who
are grieving in Zion and Jerusalem.

These ancient words are recited to mourners upon the outset of Shiva. As our
spiritual intention moves from the dead to the bereft. When souls of our loved
ones depart our physical world to become one with the Eternal, we can often
feel the depths of loneliness which is measured in the strength of our love.

In Judaism, the concept of Zachor, “Memory” is the providence of time and is
actualized through our deep feelings of love, loyalty and devotion to those who
have left this earth. Memory enables the spiritual connection we so
desperately need when we are no longer able to see those who we love with
our own eyes or hear their voices with our own ears. Memory is the spiritual
connector which enables us to continue seeing. The act of hearing, seeing and
feeling the presence of our parents, siblings, spouses, partners and children
when they are no longer here is held within our hearts. Memory consists of
the vast tapestry of “snapshots” of our shared experiences and hold the
deepest emotional connection so as to enable them to become part of us as we
continue our own journeys here in this world.

Four times every year: today, on Yom Kippur, during the end
of Sukkot and Pesach and on Shavuot, we are given the gift of time to
remember the ones who are closest to us. This moment of Yizkor – and the
remembrances their spirits bring to us – are part of the life of our Jewish
calendar. Today, we remember by word and by deed. We ask God for
permission to keep a watchful eye on their souls that they might be “bound up
in the bonds of Eternal Life.” Most of all, we commit ourselves to live our own
lives as they would have wanted for us – with joy, health, strength and peace.

May the souls of all our loved ones be sustained by our love and protected
under the wings of the Shechinah. May their memories be for a blessing to
us, l’dor va’dor, and for the generations yet to come.

L’Shalom,
Rabbi Stephen Kahn
Congregation Beth Israel

Roeder in the synagogue office.

In Judaism, we are bound together by many things. Our traditions, rituals
and love of one another sustain our faith and our covenant with God. Yet
in Judaism it is the concept of Zachor–memory–which has given us the
immeasurable capacity to see ourselves as part of something bigger. We
are commanded to link ourselves to our past so that we may become
active participants in the ongoing creation of the world.

When we speak of Jewish history, we really are speaking of Jewish
memory. Our memorial of the exodus from Egypt at the Passover Seder
reminds us that we should strive for the freedom of all people. The
memory of the deeds of our ancestors is what links us to the faith of
Abraham and Sarah. And it is the recognition of those beloved souls who
continue to bless us through the strength of memory that brings us
together this day for Yizkor.

In the pages of this book you will find the names of many beloved
members of our family of families. We pray that their souls will be bound
up in the bond of eternal life. May their memories continue to bless us,
l’dor va’dor, from generation to generation.

Hamakom yinachem etchem b’toche
av’lei tzion v’Yerushalayim

May you be comforted among all those who bereave in Zion and
Jerusalem. Amen.

Rabbi Stephen Kahn

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul;
He guideth me in straight paths for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil.

For Thou art with me;

Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;

Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Silent Remembrance

May God remember forever my dear ones who have gone to their eternal

rest. May they be at one with the One who is life eternal. May the beauty
of their lives shine for evermore, and may my life always bring honor to

their memory.

"The Lord gives; the Lord takes away;

Blessed be the name of the Lord”

Early or late, all must answer the summons to return to the Reservoir of
Being. For we lose our hold on life when our time has come, as the leaf

falls from the bough when its day is done. The deeds of the righteous
enrich the world, as the fallen leaf enriches the soil beneath. The dust

returns to the earth, the spirit lives on with God.

Like the stars by day, our beloved dead are not seen by mortal eyes. Yet

they shine on forever; theirs is eternal peace.

Let us be thankful for the companionship that continues in a love

stronger than death. Sanctifying the name of God, we do honor to their

memory.

“the Lord has given,

the Lord has taken away”
