Rosh Kollel
“Do not forget what you saw (at Har Sinai) and tell it to
your descendants.”
According to the ן’’במר, this is one of the 248 השע תוצמ,
which many of לארשי ינב וניחא say daily at תירחש. What does it
incorporate, and why is it so pivotal?
The ן’’במר, at the conclusion of Parshas Bo, explains
why so many תוצמ are םירצמ תאיציל רכז. The various forms of
disbelief in Hashem fall into three categories. There are those
that claim the world is not the work of a Supreme Creator, but
somehow happened. At the time of םירצמ תאיצי, however, and
for all of the periods of the םיאיבנ; the prevailing belief was that
our world, which reflects such plan and purpose, has to be the
work of a Supreme Intelligent Creator. Rather, they maintained
that the Creator set it into motion in a way that He would not
be involved, given that the Earth is only a speck in our own
solar system, and certainly in the entire universe.
Klal Yisroel in Mitzrayim, due to their environment, had
become influenced by these alien beliefs. The םיסנ incorporated
in the entire הלואג process, the תוכמ and ףוס םי תעירק, came
to disprove these falsehoods. Therefore, since Hashem wants
these םיסנ to remain fresh and vibrant in our minds, daily in
הליפת – morning and evening before הרשע הנמש – we mention
םירצמ תאיצי – and specifically תורוכב תכמ and ףוס םי תעירק.
Pesach and Sukkos, of course are major reminders, and, for the
men and boys, תיציצ and ןיליפת.
In view of this, it is especially interesting to learn the

Yeshiva Mesoras Hatorah is built upon this principle;
the faithful transmission by the generation of Roshei Yeshiva

wonderful bochurim each year.
Our Guests of Honor, Dr. & Mrs. Justin Hirmes, are
very prominent in the Yeshiva Family. The entire חור of their

A Message From
Rav Moshe Zev Katzenstein, Shlit”a
Rosh Yeshiva
Here we are, once again celebrating another year of the
Yeshiva’s success and accomplishments. We are now in the
fifteenth year of the Yeshiva Gedolah’s existence in its present
state in the community. Fifteen is also the number of steps
leading into the Bais Hamikdash. The Kohen would ascend
these steps reciting a different one of the Shir Hamaalos on
every step. The Yeshiva has ascended many steps, each taking
us to a higher level of engagement, productivity, and םש שודיק
םימש. At each level, we need to sing a ריש to acknowledge the
ascent. We are truly able to sing a song of gratitude to Hashem
for the gift He has given us to accomplish with so many people.
We can also sing a song that expresses בוטה תרכה to all of you
who have helped us reach these plateaus. To the Bnei Yeshiva
who have created a standard of commitment and to the Baalei
Baatim who appreciate it and enhance it – Thank You!
These same steps lead into the Azara. The Kohen uses
them to enter into the place of higher Kedusha. This is also
appropriate in that the Yeshiva represents an opportunity
for each individual to enter into a place of greater levels of
Torah and Kedusha. The Yeshiva, through the Bnei Torah
who comprise it, represents an unwavering standard that is
consistent with the Mesorah upon which it is built. All of the
members of the Yeshiva Family are seeking to be part of that
elevated standard and want to ascend the steps to enter the
sanctuary that embodies it. Each step that brings us closer to
entering those hallowed halls is punctuated with Shir – with
song.
These fifteen years have represented tremendous אתעייס
אימשד, real growth in the facility, the size of the Yeshiva and the

number of Baalei Batim that call it their home. The era of
single bochurim has evolved to the building of new homes. The
era of Brisim has continued to the Simcha of Bar Mitzvas. The
small storefront has evolved into a beautiful facility, in which
every corner is being used for Torah, Mussar and Kiddush Shem
Shomayim.
In looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to work
together with Rabbi Knobel, Shlit”a, in creating a partnership
dedicated to building Torah and Torah Families. He has allowed
me to join him in continuing to build a fortress of Torah and
Hashkafa that he started almost 40 years ago. The Yeshiva
could not have achieved its success without the Chashuva
presence of Rabbi Knobel and his Rebbetzin. In addition, I
must express my gratitude to Baruch Moskowitz for his tireless
devotion to the building and maintaining of the Yeshiva. He
and his staff are tireless and devoted in their roles as guardians
of the Yeshiva. I am grateful to the Rebbeim who have shown
שפנ תריסמ for the Yeshiva and its Talmidim, way beyond the
call of duty. The Board of Directors, led by Mr. Adam Goller,
has undertaken the responsibilities of directing the Yeshiva
and doing what is necessary to ensure its continued success.
As well, I would like to acknowledge the work of the N’shei
and the hard work of many dedicated women to provide an
environment for the women of our Kehilla to grow.
And finally, I am grateful to the honorees who have not
only undertaken the discomfort of being honored, but are true
representatives of what the Yeshiva tries to accomplish. Dr. &
Mrs. Justin Hirmes are two individuals who will do anything, big
or small, to further the cause of Torah, Avodah, and Kiddush
Hashem. Rabbi and Mrs. Yosef Richtman are a selfless

embodiment of servants of Hashem, sparing nothing
in their quest to bring more people to appreciate Torah and
create an environment of excitement in Torah and Mitzvos for
young and old alike. Reb Menashe and Mrs. Benedict are a true
family of Talmidim, who have used their unique capabilities
to endear everyone they come in contact with, to Torah and
Hashem. They have taken their talents to Philadelphia and are
accomplishing Kiddush Hashem on all levels.
I will end with a Tefilla that the Yeshiva should continue
to have Siyatta Dishmaya in bringing honor to the Torah and to
Hakadosh Boruch Hu. We should continue to address the needs
of the Bochurim, Yungerleit, and Baalei Batim in Torah and Yiras
Shomayim, and together we should become a piece of the
necessary elements in bringing Moshiach so that we can all live
in ונימיב הרהמב שדוקה ריע םילשורי!

A Message from
Adam Goller, President
This past Shabbos, we read about Yisro and how he
and the Jewish people mutually impacted each other. Chazal
tell us that Yisro had many names, each for a different reason.
We are also told that what separated Yisro from others was his
ability to see the events that occurred and glean from them the
positive, which led him to join the Jewish people. Others see the
same events and take only what works for them, failing to see
the truth and, equally sad, failing to grow from them.
The Yeshiva has transitioned in many ways over the past
few years, following the events that created its establishment in
the Woodmere community. Many beautiful shuls have opened
around us and we continue to provide the backbone of Torah
to all those who desire it, in whatever way we can. That means
different things to different people and families. Whether it is
for Torah, tefilla or both, the Yeshiva remains committed to
helping everyone grow to their potential.
The growth of the Yeshiva continues to exceed
expectations. What started as a small kollel has blossomed
into a community beis medrash full of yungerleit, outstanding
bochrim and serious baalei batim who all strive to grow in
Torah learning and in Yiras Shamayim. What was once a minyan
which was sparse is now a source of beauty and vibrancy on
a given day, Shabbos or Yom Tov. Growth can be seen in the
number of people, children and adults, who now make use of
the Yeshiva to learn, both during the week and on Shabbos.
We take particular pride in the beautiful avos u’banim program
where we get to see multiple generations, often three, come
to learn together. From an early morning chabura to chavrusa
learning late at night, the Yeshiva continues to facilitate growth
to all those who seek it. Recently, Yeshiva added a Thursday

night mishmar program for boys, amongst other initatives. The
mishmar is attended by boys all over the neighborhood. The
practical learning of Halacha, such as how to make tzitzis, gives
the boys a true appreciation of the Mitzvah.
Yeshiva Gedolah continues to try and find ways to add
programs and accommodate different interests in learning. The
number and level of bochrim continues to grow, as the interest
in attending the Yeshiva continues to proliferate worldwide.
The kollel continues to thrive and far more of the students
who get married are staying local and learning in the Yeshiva
or working and learning when they have opportunity in the
Yeshiva, while raising their beautiful families. As important, the
number of local residents using the Yeshiva keeps expanding.
Our minyanim have seen increases in the number of people
attending. Night seder is seeing many new faces at various
points during the week. Other programs, such as women’s
shiurim and events, as well as others have been a success. We
continue to try and think of ways that the Yeshiva can increase
harbotzas Torah within our community.
Dr. and Mrs. Justin Hirmes are a beautiful example of the
totality of the relationship between the community and Yeshiva.
Justin and his family, anchored by his aishes chayil, have chosen
to make the Yeshiva and our community home. Justin frequents
the Yeshiva for daily sedarim, Shabbos davening, always looking
to help in any way possible. Be it setting up the Kiddush, doing
the small things, or when the morning of the Chanukas Habayis
the Yeshiva had to go rent a truck due to rain, it was him
getting it done in his quiet way. Mrs. Hirmes herself is always
looking to help where possible, including with N’shei events.
Specifically, she organizes the N’shei’s tehilim group, which

connects the women in a beautiful and meaningful way
around Tefilah. Both are local products from families who are
so supportive of how they are raising their beautiful family. We
could not be prouder in having them recognized as our Guests
of Honor.
Rabbi and Mrs. Yosef Richtman are mechanchim,
proliferators of Torah in our community and beyond. Uniquely,
they are from the founding members of the kollel. We
are pleased to be able to recognize them with the Avodas
Hakodesh Award. The Richtmans impact the Yeshiva in so
many ways. The obvious is the beautiful learning programs
for children, but it is the less obvious that makes them such a
special family.
The Harbotzas Torah Award is appropriately being
given this year to Rabbi and Mrs. Menashe Benedict. I have
heard about the energetic way the Benedicts influence the
Philadephia community, trying to enhance the ruchniyus of
others. Menashe is a former talmid who thrived in the Yeshiva
and still maintains such a close connection. His father was
instrumental in helping the Yeshiva construct its building and
that commitment to Torah is apparent in the next generation.
There are many others who have played and continue
to play such a large part in the success of the Yeshiva. My wife
and I truly appreciate all those who enable the Yeshiva to be
there for our family and many others. As we reflect tonight,
let’s appreciate those who have dedicated themselves to our
success. As we look forward, let’s try and consider the ways in
which we can all increase and maintain the level of kedusha
within our homes and community, through the medium of
Torah. Thank you all for coming and for your support.

Guests of Honor
Dr. Justin and Riki Hirmes
It is always special when a family’s connection
to the Yeshiva is holistic. While Justin is a regular in
Yeshiva, both during the week and on Shabbos, it is
the presence, however often, of the rest of the family
that makes this couple special. The Hirmes family does
all of the little things which people don’t necessarily
notice, but are important and meaningful. It could be
setting up the Kiddush, helping with meals for those
who are in need, organizing Tehilim and so much
more. They have chosen to raise their family with a
deep sense of chessed through action, not just words,
and sincerity in everything they do.
The Hirmes family moved to Woodmere almost
nine years ago. Justin, who grew up in Woodmere,
attended HAFTR until leaving to study in Reishit
Yerushalayim in Israel. Upon returning, he attended
and graduated from Lander College, staying at Touro
to earn his DPT in physical therapy, which he now
practices privately. Aside from all of his responsibilities,
Justin is an active member of Hatzala for the past 13
years.
Riki (fka Bernstein) Hirmes also grew up in
Woodmere and attended HAFTR. Following a year of
study at Midreshet, she attended Adelphi and then
Molloy to ultimately earn degrees as a nurse and

nurse practitioner. She recently joined LIJ after 8 years
at NYU. Additionally, she practices at Urgent MD.
Aside from her busy work schedule and family, Riki is
active in organizing Yeshiva events, as well as many
programs at Bnos Bais Yaakov.
Both of them use their professions as vehicles
for chessed and Kiddush Hashem. The Hirmes have
B”H a beautiful family. Zev, attends Darchei Torah,
while Shayna and Deena attend Bnos Bais Yaakov.
Leeba and Esther are at home. The Yeshiva is certainly
appreciative of their ongoing support and help in so
many ways and excited to be able to show our hakaras
hatov to them this year.

Rabbi Yosef and Shani Richtman
There are many ways that people contribute
to the growth of an institution. In the case of the
Richtman family, there are just too many to list.
Everything from the weekly divrei Torah, the food in
the Yeshiva, Mosher Kosher, Avos U’banim and so
many other things, Yosef is there to fill in the blanks.
Regardless, when it comes to the Richtman family,
nothing is done or said without a smile, dedication
and selflessness. The Yeshiva is fortunate to have them
as members of its hanhala. Outside of Yeshiva, Yosef
volunteers for many organizations and also assists
in running programs for Siach Yitzchok. Yosef can
be seen all over the neighborhood during the week,
running to a chavrusa or to do a chesed.
He grew up in St. Louis and Chicago, graduating
from Skokie Yeshiva High School before learning at
Bais Yisroel for the following 4 years. During his 4th
year in Bais, Yosef married his wife Shani. When they
returned to America, Yosef learned in Yeshiva Sh’or
Yashuv for one year, after which he joined the then
newly formed YGFT Kollel. After learning full time in
the Yeshiva for several years, Yosef was added to the
YGFT staff as Director of Special Projects. He is truly
instrumental in the Yeshiva’s success.

Rabbi Menashe & Amanda Benedict
It is always rewarding when alumni move on
and are so productive and integral to their new
communities. It is, as much as anything else, a
testament to the Yeshiva, its rebbeim and overall
environment. The Benedict family is continually
allowing the Yeshiva to take pride in their
accomplishments. Their collective dedication to the
Yeshiva and the growth of Torah is an inspiration to us
all.
Menashe learned in Yeshiva and excelled.
As a young boy, he grew up in Queens, attending
Tiferes Moshe and South Shore respectively. After
time at Yeshiva Tiferes Yerushalayim, Bais Yisroel
and Mir in Eretz Yisroel, Menashe came to study at
the Yeshiva. His energy and passion for Torah and
yiddishkeit earned him a sterling reputation amongst
his rebbeim and peers. After learning in the Yeshiva’s
kollel, following his marriage to Amanda, for 2 years,
Menashe went to learn again in Eretz Yisroel, going
back to the Mir. Subsequently, the Benedicts settled
in the Philadelphia community to join the local kollel
where, aside from learning full time, he learned with
community members at night. After 3 years in the
kollel, Menashe took on a role teaching and doing
kiruv at local universities, under the Meor program. It
is here where Menashe’s deep love for Torah and

chesed make him a true asset to those he teaches.
Aside from all of that, Menashe makes time to be part
of an organization called the Chevra, who give weekly
shiurim in the city to young Jewish professionals.
Amanda (fka Tammam) Benedict grew up
in West Orange, NJ and attended both Kushner
elementary and Bruriah High School. After studying at
Midreshet in Eretz Yisroel, she eventually pursued her
sonography degree and currently works at Mainline
Healthy Hospitals in the Philadelphia area. Amanda
juggles her professional career with her responsibilities
at home with her growing Mishpacha.
Both respective set of parents’ love for Torah
and chessed is evident in the home that the Benedicts
are building. Of note, Menashe’s father, Dani
Benedict, was instrumental in helping the Yeshiva
obtain the construction financing for our current
building. We are proud to be able to acknowledge
their efforts and accomplishments. The Benedicts find
opportunities to come visit the Yeshiva, as frequently
as possible.
