Debbie and Marc Turansky

‫ עמוד אש‬- Pillar of Fire Award

The Turansky’s service to RPRY reflects the partnership of two talented
people, both passionate about Jewish education, who each found a
high-impact avenue of involvement in the yeshiva while also supporting
the other’s activism. The result is a cascade of much needed changes at
the yeshiva that continue to this day.
Marc became a member of the Board of Directors (as it used to be known)
shortly after their sons were enrolled in RPRY. He got more involved by
working on sub-committees and volunteering his time where possible.
Though his day job, previously at Merrill Lynch and currently as Executive
Director/Head of Financial Advisor Directed Programs at JPMorgan
Securities, keep him quite busy, he carved out large blocks of time for the
yeshiva over the past decade.
After spending a number of years on the Board, Marc served on the
Executive Board, before becoming president of the school and serving in
that role for three years (2011-2014). Marc is most noted for organizing a
Strategic Planning initiative in partnership with Yeshiva University Institute
for University-School Partnership, for which he served as chair of the
coordinating committee (2012-2014). This multi-year project involved
performing a parent and governance survey, full analysis of the school,
across both administration, education and finance, to allow for a
benchmarking comparison between RPRY and other comparable Jewish
day schools. It was determined that four key focus areas needed to be
addressed, in the area of Educational Excellence, Recruitment & Retention,
Fundraising, and Financial Success. This became RPRY’s first ever Long
Term Strategic Plan. After stepping down as president, Marc chaired the
constitutional reform committee (2015), which led to the new/current
governance structure of the school.

Debbie, a Veterinary Medical Doctor at the Raritan Animal Hospital in
Edison, grew up in an observant Jewish home in Oak Park, Michigan that
was deeply committed to Jewish education. Debbie’s grandfather, Maurice
Lowenthal, was a successful pharmacist in Cincinnati, Ohio who, with the
support of his wife Hester, served as one of the founders of the Chofetz
Chaim day school in Cincinnati. Maurice got involved so that his children
would have a yeshiva day school to attend, in an area where none
previously existed. The yeshiva he helped establish is now a long-standing
and well-respected part of the Cincinnati Jewish community. Mr.
Lowenthal’s commitment to the yeshiva did not end with his three
children’s graduations. He remained involved as a volunteer and financial
supporter for five decades. He also set up a family foundation with the
primary focus to support initiatives for secular and religious excellence in
Jewish education. Debbie’s mother Mitzi Traurig z”l, Debbie herself, and
other family members sat on the board of the foundation and were
charged with allocating funds each year.
While Marc was becoming more involved as a lay leader, his passion and
dedication inspired Debbie to direct some of the foundation’s allocations
to RPRY. They identified a growth opportunity in the school’s use of
technology and had the funds dedicated to that area. This began with the
installation of the school’s first smart boards in a growing number of
classrooms, implementation of RenWeb, partnership with the Gruss
Foundation on the new computer lab, and the hiring of a consultancy
group to advise, support, and oversee all the changes.
A few years later Debbie saw another opportunity at RPRY and rose to the
occasion. Chana Luchins, then Benji’s 7th grade math teacher, talked with
Debbie about the prospective value of ALEKS, a Web-based math
assessment and learning system that identifies each student’s proficiency
and delivers a personalized learning program. Debbie directed funds from
the foundation to support the acquisition of ALEKS for the 8th grade and
the results were remarkable. The yeshiva has since expanded access to
ALEKS to students in all the upper school grades.
Debbie takes great pride in both technology initiatives that her family’s
foundation made possible at RPRY. She remarks that, as a scientist who
comes from a family of scientists (her mother was a pharmacist, in an era
when female pharmacists were rare), it was natural for her to identify and
support projects that give students hands-on exposure to science and
technology.
While their sons have graduated and moved on to high school - Eli (15) a
student at TABC and Benji (14) at Yeshivat Frisch – Marc and Debbie
remain big boosters of RPRY and actively encourage others to send their
children and their financial support to the school.

Penina & Asaf Shmuel

‫ לפיד‬- Leadership Award

You’d be hard pressed to find two people with a more informed view of
RPRY than Penina and Asaf Shmuel. They gained their perspective from
their experiences as parents of former and current students, active
volunteers, successful fundraisers, generous supporters, as well as
Penina’s work as an assistant teacher in the Yeshiva.

The Shmuels have five children – Rachel (15), Tamar (14), Yosef (13), Ezra
(10), and Molly (7). When their youngest graduates, Penina and Asaf will
have been proud RPRY parents for over two decades.

Asaf was enlisted to serve on the board of directors over seven years ago
and was later tapped to be a member of the executive committee. Three
years ago he graciously agreed to co-chair the scholarship breakfast and
under his leadership the event has continued to attract a marked increase
in support.

When he’s not volunteering on RPRY’s behalf, Asaf works in his family’s
cabinet manufacturing business, Choice Cabinetry, in Somerville.

Penina received her Masters in Education from Brooklyn College. She is
currently an assistant teacher in the kindergarten class at RPRY; she has
worked in this role for three years. She also serves as a substitute teacher,
as needed, in different grades in the mornings and has volunteered at the
school as a class parent and as a helper in the lunch program.

The Shmuels are members of Congregation Ohr Torah in Edison, where
Asaf serves as Gabbai. They also take great pride in their family’s regular
involvement and support of the Tomchei Shabbat program and Rutgers
Jewish Experience.

Brooke and Rabbi Daniel Reich

‫ נר‬- Alumnus Torah Award

If you want to meet role models of deep loyalty and HaKoras Hatov to
RPRY and the broader Highland Park/Edison Jewish community, you
should speak with Rabbi Daniel and Brooke Reich.
Rabbi Daniel Reich is the second son of a family deeply tied to the Yeshiva.
He grew up in a home on Harrison Street, across the street from the
school, and his mother Nancy was a beloved pre-school and elementary
school assistant teacher there for 15 years. He and his two brothers, Phillip
and Isaac, and sister Rebecca all attended RPRY, as did their two cousins.
His aunt Mina Reich still serves the school as a teacher in the early
childcare department.
Daniel is currently completing his Semicha studies in the Rabbi Isaac
Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) of Yeshiva University and is a
member of the Wexner Semicha Honors Program. He received the
Maybaum Sephardic Fellowship and previously received the Kupperman
Fellowship. He is also completing a certificate in pastoral mental health
counseling, at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva
University.
Daniel and his Aishes Chayil, Brooke, married in 2014. They live in Teaneck
and attend the Zichron Mordechai shul, where Daniel teaches periodic
shiurim. They have two children, Leeba (2 ½ years old) and Shira (3 months
old).
Brooke is a licensed social worker (LSW) who received her undergraduate
and graduate degrees from Yeshiva University. In her role as a Social
Worker, Brooke has worked in a nursing home, in a clinical mental health
agency, and at YU Connects. Most recently, she supported clients in the
Jewish Family and Children’s Services in Wayne, NJ. In her college years,
Brooke worked as a counselor in Camp HASC and as a volunteer leader in
the Kids of Courage Travel Camp, run by Chai Lifeline.

Daniel and Brooke decided to pursue a life in the pulpit rabbinate and are
now planning for the next stage of their family’s life.
Semicha training includes a tour of duty as a Rabbinic Intern and Rabbi
Daniel found his way back to town to serve in this capacity at
Congregation Ahavas Achim, from September 2016 – June 2017. This
opportunity allowed Daniel, Brooke, and Leeba to visit with his family in
Edison and to stop by his parents’ (and his childhood) shul, Congregation
Etz Ahaim.
Daniel and Brooke credit RPRY, and Daniel’s family, in providing them with
the foundations of their Hashkafic outlook – an abiding commitment to
V’Ahavta L’Reyecha K’mocha (Love each Jew as you love yourself) and a
firm belief in the inherent value of every single Jew and every single
person. They look forward to building on this outlook as they raise their
children and serve the Jewish community.

Head of School

In Brachot 33b, Rabbi Chanina teaches that, “Hakol bidei
shamayim chutz miyirat shamayim – All is in the hands of
Heaven except for reverence of Heaven.” Rashi explains
that Hashem determines almost everything – how tall or
short we are, how intelligent or wealthy we are. Most of
what we experience in life is out of our control, and
sometimes our success or failure seems arbitrary. What we
do control, however, is how we react to these
experiences. We can have a positive attitude and choose
to react in a way that exhibits yirat shamayim, reverence of
Heaven, or we can have the opposite reaction.
There are so many individuals who have put in
tremendous effort on behalf of RPRY these past few years.
The yeshiva has grown and developed in many ways; we
have a lot to be proud of, and a lot more work to do. In all
of our efforts, we must keep in mind that ultimately, Hakol
bidei shamayim chutz miyirat shamayim. Our success is in
the Hands of Hashem; it is our responsibility to have the
right attitude and motivation.
Our honorees tonight exemplify this approach. Debbie
and Marc Turansky, Penina and Asaf Shmuel, and Brooke
and Rabbi Daniel Reich all understand that Hakol bidei
shamayim chutz miyirat shamayim. In their work for our
yeshiva and for other Torah institutions, they approach
every endeavor with an optimism and courage that is
possible because they know that they are doing the work
of Hashem and that ultimately our collective success is not
the result of our own efforts but because of Him.
Thank you all for coming out to support our yeshiva and
for helping us to elicit the siyata dishmaya, the help of
Heaven, that results from working out of a sense of yirat
shamayaim, reverence of Heaven. May Hashem continue
to grant RPRY success.

RPRY DINNER

Message from the President

Everyone knows that Moshe Rabbeinu was the ultimate
Jewish Leader. Indeed, the highest praise given to
Moshe, according to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, in his book
“Lessons on Leadership,” is that he was a “servant of the
Lord.” This description appears 18 times throughout
Tanach. Moreover, it is clear that leadership was not, to
Moshe, a vehicle of authority or power. It was, and is so
basic to Jewish tradition, an opportunity to serve.
Leadership never elevated Moshe above the masses, but
rather compelled him towards increased humility. And so,
we are told, Moshe was “very humble, more so than
anyone else on earth” (Bamidbar 12:3).
Since its inception over 70 years ago, RPRY has served as
a pivotal institution in the greater Central Jersey area. It
helped build our rich and supportive community, and led
thousands of families in providing Torah education, values
and priorities to generations of future Jewish leaders.
RPRY has done this not to gain power or authority, or to
establish its place at the top, but rather to humbly serve
the community and to teach our children how to serve
Hashem. Critically, RPRY’s success could not have been
possible without the modest yet powerful leadership of so
many altruistic community members.
This year, we celebrate the “Light of Leadership”: RPRY’s
leadership, the leadership of so many dedicated men,
women and students, and, especially, the leadership of
Debbie & Marc Turansky, Penina & Asaf Shmuel and
Brooke & Rabbi Daniel Reich. Each of these incredible
couples has led by example, unpretentiously and
selflessly.

The Turanskys have led the Yeshiva with tireless
dedication, through Board membership, Committee
efforts, three crucial years of Presidency and enormous
donor generosity and establishment of academic
advanced technology integration.
The Shmuels have been RPRY leaders with unbridled
passion and loyalty, through Board and Executive
Committee membership, building the Scholarship
Campaign to help families who cannot afford the full cost
of tuition reap the benefits of an RPRY Jewish Day School
education, and as a beloved, nurturing Early Childhood
educator.
The Reichs are leading the RPRY alumni charge, by
becoming extraordinary role models, embracing our
Yeshiva’s pure, wholesome and robust foundation and
incorporating it and transforming the world through Torah
scholarship and leadership.
The “Light” of these three phenomenal Honorees’
leadership burns ever bright, particularly because of their
humility. May Hashem bless them, RPRY, our students –
past, present & future – and all of us with endless years of
Leadership opportunity, as we serve Hashem and our
community, edging closer every day, iy”H, to the coming
of Moshiach, speedily in our days.

examples of how you have built a life
together of always giving and sharing with
those around you. Whether it be through

your teaching or your chessed you are
always thinking about Klal Yisroel.

We look forward to watching you continue
to impact the Jewish community in the

years to come, especially as you become a
Rabbi and Rebbetzin in La Jolla, California.

We could not be prouder of you!

Alumnus Torah Award
We are pleased to honor these families who
honor our most enduring values and our most
precious assets: our Children, our Torah and

our Future.
In so doing, they bring honor to our community

by ensuring that our successors have the
opportunities, principles and national memories
that only knowledge of Torah and its teachings

can provide.
This is the vision of RPRY; these are the
visionaries who actualize it. May Hashem
reward them no less than they have rewarded

us.
