Our initiatives includes purchasing reading and math resource
materials for students in grades K-3. The students are exposed to
the arts and music, though the poster contest we implement and the
recorder music program, provided in partnership with Joe’s Music
Center & Performing Arts, located in Queens (and Brooklyn) NY. This
year, we implemented an “Anti-Bullying” program, targeted to 3rd
graders, instilling in them a positive sense of self identity and worth.
We work to provide them with the tools needed to confront bullying
behavior from their peers. A component of our umbrella program
under Services to Youth, we work in collaboration with the Health
and Human Services Facet, ensuring that our students at PS/IS 116
experience the “Bio Bus,” which helps students explore marine biology
in a self-contained mobile laboratory, equipped with microscopes,
science materials and resources. The students have the opportunity
to conduct hands on experiments instilling the basics of science and
biology.
The Health and Human Services Facet partners with the “Colgate
Bright Smiles, Bright Futures” mobile dental van. The Facet working
in tandem with the principle of PS/IS 116, schedules the van with
qualified dentists, to be available at designated times during the year to
provide dental screenings and education about the importance of good
dental health habits for life.
The Services to Youth Facet, also works closely with “You Can Go
To College” a nonprofit organization, to support Queens students
pursuing higher education, at a historically Black College or University.
In addition, the Chapter provides scholarships for college-bound young
men and women in memory of charter member, Muriel Baldwin and
our sister Deardra L. Turner.
Now in our 5th year, our work continues with students who participate
in the Annual Model UN Club. Students in grades 9-12 are introduced
to an educational simulation and academic competition in which
students learn about the mission and function of the United Nations.
They learn and practice strategies on democratic diplomacy and
developing international relations. They attend workshops perfecting

their public speaking, writing skills and enhance their leadership
abilities. This year, we tutored and sponsored sixteen (16) students,
who studied the culture, education, economic and global impact of Sri
Lanka
In addition, the Chapter established the LINK/NIA Art Scholarship
Fund. The Chapter has contributed several thousand dollars in
scholarship funds to students to attend Arts workshops and the Teen
Arts Intensive Program at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning
(JCAL). Our community service trajectory continues with two award
winning programs under the National Trends and Services: Linkages
to Health Facets implementing our Annual Health Fair, and the
Professional Women’s Group Program with internationally renowned
not for profit organization, Dress for Success, which empowers women
to achieve economic independence personally and professionally. .
The International Trends and Services Facet partnered with The Young
Women’s Leadership School of Queens with in grades 6-12 by creating
the International Wax Museum, a drama based program where young
women researched and learned about a diversity of global female
leaders, both past and present. We also partnered with the Queens
Family Justice Center for Domestic Violence, and held a televised
forum on Human Trafficking. Our 2nd Human Trafficking Forum was
held at York College on March 8, 2018, held on International Women’s
Day.
We had the privilege of hosting “a conversation” with the Hon. Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf, the first elected female president of Liberia and
Nobel Peace Laureate. The conversation focused on leadership
development and what it takes to be a leader, making a difference in
our communities and our nation. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is an
honorable member of The Links, Incorporated.
In our 22 years of service, our growing membership of accomplished
and dedicated professional women, continue to implement the vision
and mission of The Links Incorporated building upon the legacy of our
charter members, working collectively in sisterhood, friendship and
service.

Greater Queens Chapter of The Links, Inc.
22nd Anniversary 1996-2018
The Journey to Linkdom
March 9, 1996 thirty-two enterprising women realized their dream,
Greater Queens Chapter of The Links, Inc. was the first in Queens.
Nia was the first name they chose as they began to travel on their path.
The journey was not smooth but these women met each challenging task.
Sometimes their journey seemed endless and there were many detours on the way.
A few perspectives became weary and quit but others on their path did stay.
After their dream was realized they continue to contribute to the community.
Many needed projects and services were provided to continue the Links’ legacy
The Leadership Academy, Health Fair and UN Model are projects welcomed by all.
Many look forward to the celebration of the annual Masquerade Ball.
The chapter focused on National and International Projects too.
They provided services to the community in many things they did do.
These enterprising women embarked upon a journey;
trailblazers sharing their fight.
On their shoulder the present membership stands as they keep their goals in sight.
Thirty-two enterprising women did not lose faith,
vision or their dreams on the way,
That is why we celebrate our Chapter’s 22nd Anniversary today.
Alumna Link C. Janet Baker Banks
