The Makor
College

Experience

A Partnership Program of
Makor Disability Services
and Yeshiva University

What is the Makor College Experience? The Makor College Experience is
a three-year, non-degree program for young men (typically aged 18 to 25)
with Intellectual Disability at Yeshiva University in Washington Heights.

The Makor College Experience (MCE) provides its students the
opportunity to be part of the YU community while gaining skills and
exploring opportunities as they transition to a life of independence.

What is a day at the MCE like? The day begins with Jewish studies in the
morning and continues with general studies in the afternoon. MCE
participants attend specially developed classes, exposing students to the
liberal arts, enhancing students’ independent living skills, and providing
opportunities for vocational exploration.

Do MCE students earn a degree? No, the MCE is a non-degree program.
Students who complete the program requirements will graduate with a
Certificate of Completion, a resume, and a reference letter for future
employment.

What sort of student is appropriate for the MCE? The typical MCE
student should be eager to continue his formal education after high
school; have a strong motivation to learn and gain skills; have a long-term
goal of finding gainful employment; be excited to become involved in
campus life; and should be able to independently enjoy campus life with
minimal supervision. To be eligible for the program, a student must: 1)
Have a diagnosed intellectual or developmental disability; 2) have a
history of special education and/or State funded services for individuals

HOME NURSE’S ROOM INDOOR PLAY AREA SHABBOS FUND MUSIC THERAPY SPORTS THERAPY
RECREATIONAL THERAPY MEZUZAH FULL HALF QUARTER LISTING BIRCHAS HAMAZON

with intellectual or developmental disabilities; and 3) have attended a
high school program designed for students with intellectual or
developmental disabilities.
Are inclusion and social opportunities a part of this program? Inclusion
and social opportunities are very much a part of the MCE, including peer
mentors, lunch buddies, and Judaic study partners (chavrusahs). MCE
students attend daily prayer with YU students, have access to University
resources, attend campus events, and are generally a part of the YU
community.
Is there a residential component to the program? The Makor College
Experience includes a near-campus residential component, although this
aspect of the program is not mandatory and acceptance into the Makor
Dorm is separate from, and not guaranteed by, acceptance into the
College Experience. Please understand that that we cannot provide
transportation for students who choose to commute.
How is the program funded? For New York State residents eligible for
services through the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities
(OPWDD), some or all of the tuition and housing costs can be covered
through a combination of Day Habilitation, Supplemental Day
Habilitation, and Community Habilitation funds. For Out-of-State
students, the Makor College Experience is a tuition-based program. Staff
from Makor will work with families and service coordinators to see what
funding and assistance may be available, and financial need should not
preclude potential program participants from seeking more information.
To support or get more information about the Makor College Experience,
contact Dr. Stephen Glicksman, Director of Clinical Innovation at Makor,
at 347-390-1315 or [email protected]. To apply, visit

But some perspective: If Saadya’s trip

for us to reach this point.

It started with a chance comment at a
Shabbaton run by Yachad (the amazing
branch of the OU organization devoted
to the special needs population of the
Orthodox world). The Friday night
session was for “Parents of Special-Needs
Adult Children” and about midnight, I
headed into the tea room. Tired from the
hour, and a little overwhelmed by the
information, I didn’t look where I was
going. I literally bumped into another
mother. We both smiled and apologized
and started a conversation. “So, what’s
your son doing next year?” I asked.

“Oh, he’s going to the new program at
Yeshiva University,” she said.

I was taken aback. “I didn’t know there
was one.”

Somehow, we got separated between

scanned the crowded room, but couldn’t

Jeanne Warman, Founder and Executive Director

of Women’s League 1978-2018

If the Years Could Talk . . .

they would tell of your endless toil to create a warm “family” feeling within each residence.

If the Months Could Speak . . .

they would boast of WLCR’s superior standard of care lauded by OPWDD with the bestowal of the prestigious
COMPASS award.

If the Weeks Could Remember . . .

they would join you in celebrating each consumer’s milestones, be it tooth brushing and making eye contact for
one or securing a job for another.

If the Days Could Recall . . .

they would exult with the chasonim and kallahs for whom you hosted sheva brachos, surrounded by joyous staff
and friends.

If the Hours Could Report . . .

they would whisper about the depressed and anxious parents who turned to you for support and left with new
hope in their eyes.

If the Minutes Could Affirm . . .

they would sing zemiros along with the staff and consumers who graced your Shabbos and Yom Tov tables.

If the Seconds Could Announce . . .

they would delight in the smiling faces of consumers queued up at the WLCR Chanuka party waiting excitedly for
your complimentary words and $2 bills.

Then the four Decades Can and Will Attest to all the hard work, dedication and perseverance that you marshaled to

found and lead this extraordinary empire of chesed, also known as Women’s League!
