MESSAGE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

We started with eight children with cancer. Today we serve more than 5,000
children and families living with life-threatening illnesses, serious chronic
conditions, trauma, tragedy, or loss.
In the last 30 years, our doors have been open for all who need us. And every
year, the demand grows. Some years, the growth is close to 20%. So while we can’t predict how many people we
will serve in 2017, we can safely say it will be a multiple of our current case load.
Chai Lifeline will be prepared.
We can make that promise because the organization rests on the strength of our volunteers, staff, board, and
our committed friends and supporters.
The army of volunteers who donate thousands of hours and their wonderful talents infuse our activities and
services with enthusiasm and love for our children and their families. It is the (not so) secret ingredient that
helps kids stay focused, positive, and confident in even the most adverse situations.
Every organization strives to attract the best and the brightest. Chai Lifeline’s success comes from the reality
that our staff and lay leadership are of the highest caliber. They are filled with compassion and resolve to do
whatever it takes to help families in the midst of trying medical situations.
But it is the last group, our donors, who make us truly great. Chai Lifeline is community-based in the best way:
our list of contributors has reached 80,000 friends. We are grateful for the support we receive from each person,
but I would be remiss in not talking about three that have significantly changed Chai Lifeline in the past year.
Longtime corporate contributor Meridian Capital Group and Martin and Melodie Scharf of Lawrence,
NY, dedicated two of the four planned villages at the Camp Simcha campus. These villages incorporate a
division’s worth of cottages (4 in each village) and surrounding grounds to create natural outdoor recreation and
socialization areas and a home for each age group in camp. The dedications of Meridian Village and Scharf
Village (in memory of Susan Ann Scharf) are helping us reach our goal of renewing and expanding capacity
at the entire Camp Simcha campus. We look forward to our largest Camp Simcha season ever in 2017.
The Evan Levy z’l Fund, established by his parents, Andrew and Margaret, strengthens Chai Lifeline’s ability to
provide financial support for families in the midst of illness. The fund is intended to alleviate some of the strain
that the added cost of illness puts on family life. We are grateful to the Levy family’s vision and determination to
assure that families have the resources they need to fight the devastating impact of a child’s illness.

What makes the biggest difference
in the lives of families living with
pediatric illness or loss?

Community. People who care. Peers who understand and whose counsel comes from experience.
Being sick changes everything in a child’s life. Taking care of an ill child depletes a family’s energy and fortitude. The antidote to
feeling devastated, alone, and isolated is the care, compassion, and action of others.
For 30 years, Chai Lifeline has given tens of thousands of families the concrete services and emotional support that enables
patients, siblings, and parents to find hope and joy in their lives.
Our programs and services take care of everything from the mundane, like help getting to doctors’ appointments and hot
food when children are hospitalized, to the extraordinary: medically supervised overnight camps that give children confidence,
courage, and life skills they need to fight dreaded illnesses.
But it is our people, the trained, credentialed professionals and thousands of dedicated volunteers, who make the real
difference. They transmit the warmth and compassion, knowledge and empathy that transform programs into life-changing
events. More than volunteers…more than case managers, social workers, and regional directors…more than Big Brothers and
Sisters and counselors…they are the catalysts that help our children and families say,

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

Immune deficiencies, disability or dependence on medical
equipment can limit opportunities for socialization and impede
the development of meaningful relationships. Our remedy is a full
year of activities for young patients and their siblings that build
confidence, abilities, and friendships. Socializing with others living
with illness, loss and adversity in their homes helps normalize
their situations and helps them find strength through laughter and
shared experiences. The activities have another benefit: they enable
parents whose time is usually occupied by a sick child to focus on
other children or their own needs.
