In Parshat Terumah, perek 25, pasuk 8, Hashem commands Moshe to tell
Bnai Yisrael “ ַכנְ ִ֖תּי ְבּתוֹ ָכֽםMוְ ָ ֽשׁrש. ִמ ְק&ָ֑דּMוּ ִ֖ליrשׂs ָ֥ע.ְ”ו,EAxnadmthepylsehall make Me a
sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst.” The Or Hachaim Hakadosh
asks, why does Hashem use the word mikdash in directing Bnai Yisrael to
create a place where Hashem’s shechinah would dwell, when every other
time the Torah describes the place actually built as a mishkan. The first
answer given is that the commandment to create a mikdash for Hashem
is a mitzvah applicable for all generations. The word ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשׁis used by the
Torah as a reference to the ultimate dwelling place of Hashem in the
future. The Jews who left Egypt built the mishkan as a temporary
structure at Hashem’s direction so that it could be easily

assembled and disassembled to accommodate their travel through the
desert. Once Eretz Yisrael was conquered, settled, and in a more
permanent state, Shlomo ha-Melech completed his father Dovid
ha-Melech’s vision of a more permanent structure, the Beit ha-Mikdash,
to fulfill this commandment of וְ ָ֥עשׂו ִ֖לי ִמ ְק ָ֑דּש. Today without the Beit
ha-Mikdash we fulfill this obligation through our Mikdash Me’at. Our shul
serves as a focal point for ourIcnomhomnuonirtyo, fand it is where we unite to
serve Him. The second answer given by the Or Hachaim Hakadosh is
that the word ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשׁwasMusre.d&toMhirgsh.liHghotnthoarteeeverything done on
behalf of the mishkan wasTcohnesyidaerreedahmolayz, oinr gkadosh. So even though the
place created was called a mishkan, all tasks associated with donating,
creating, building and maintaining the mishkan were considered
important and holy. I believe this second answer can also be extended

generations. The work done to fulfil the mitzvah of וְ ָ֥עשׂו ִ֖לי ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשwill
forever be considered holy and an important part of who we are as a
nation.
Tonight, we honor and express our Hakarat ha-Tov to specific individuals
who have significantly contributed to the maintenance and future
growth of our own Mikdash Me’at and of our greater community. The

to help the shul. Eli Kahn grew up in a home that exemplified the phrase
“family first, but the shul is a close second.” Both of Eli’s parents have
given and continue to give their time and energy to the shul. Eli has
taken his parents’ lead at a very early age. Eli has contributed in so
many ways, providing his peers and the youth of our shul a model of
what it means to be part of the tzibbur. From helping the Men’s Club, to

Men’s Club Message
I heard a rumor that some people have short attention spans and
don’t really want to read a long message. In that case, I will write the
shortest message I can think of, but a powerful one:
VInolhuontneoerr!o!!f!
That is it. Volunteer.
Thank you for reaMdinrg. .& Mrs. Honoree
For those who allocTahteedymaorreeathmaanz1i5ngseconds to the Men’s Club
message, let me elaborate the way we would in our special minyan. If
you look at our honorees, each is more than just a participant. They are
all doers. They have all gone above and beyond, and have given time to
our kehilla when they cMourld. &havMe brese.nEdoxiangmotphleer things. For example -
David Schnaidman has been the Gabbai of our 7:30 a.m. minyan since I
moved into this part of town over a decade ago. That is no easy task.
Trying to make everyone happy, trying to be sensitive, trying to deal
with multiple opinions and, most importantly, ensuring that everything
ran smoothly week in and week out. Many people would take that for
granted. As someone who has been a Gabbai in multiple shuls and
minyanim, I can tell you -- it is not that simple. If you don’t believe me,
think about that the next time you hear a request for a Ba’al Koreh or
turn down saying the Haftarah.
Congregation Beth Aaron
44th Annual Journal Dinner
David Fisher has run events for the Men’s Club. Do you know
how many times we ask for people to run events and how few people
step forward to give a few hours to help make Beth Aaron the great
place it is? You can multiply that to the nth degree when you look at
Deena and her service as a past Sisterhood president. Not only did she
need to run an organization, bIunt hshoenhoardotof find people to step up.
Eli -- wel, what caMn Irs.a&y aMborust. EHlio? nHoerheaes good genes. He started
in the Men’s Club crew asTshoeony aasrheealmeaarnzeindghow to walk and has been
invaluable on multiple Shabbosim to the kehilla. Even more so, he gives
an amazing Daf Yomi shiur, has woken up at 5:00 a.m. over his break to
sell Hoshanot, and has lained multiple times at the 7:15 a.m Hashkamah
Minyan. Mr. & Mrs. Example
The message is simple. Look at our honorees and say: “What can I
do to be more like them, even in a small way?”

Sisterhood Message
At the beginning of this past week’s parsha, Parshat Terumah,
Hashem commands Moshe to tell Bnai Yisrael to give a terumah to

of hafrasha, separation, meaning when a person gives something of
themselves, they are separatinIng iht ofonroarnootfher person or purpose. Just
like Bnai Yisrael gave of themselves towards Hashem’s Mishkan, so to

Esther and David married in 1986 and moved straight to the apartments in
Teaneck. After a short time, they knew they wanted to stay in this friendly
and growing community. David got his first taste of Beth Aaron when he

house, it was natural to look at the Beth Aaron side of town. They joined
Beth Aaron in 1990 with a toddler and a newborn and immediately sensed
the warm, welcoming 'out of town' atmosphere and felt right at home.
Esther was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. Growing up, her family was
active in the Young Israel of St. Louis. After high school, Esther attended
Michlala in Jerusalem and then Stern College. David was born and raised in
Washington Heights, where his parents were active in the local community.
After high school, David attended Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh for two years.
After returning from Israel, he studied in Ner Yisrael in Baltimore and
received a BA from the University of Maryland.

When Esther and David joined the shul, there were many young families
joining the shul, so it was easy to make new friends. It didn’t take long for
Esther to get involved, and she joined the Sisterhood, where she
participated in programming events, Mishloach Manot, the Shabbat
womens’ parsha shiur, and the book club. Before the shul directory became
accessible online, she worked on updating the printed shul directory by
contacting every member. In a tribute to Esther’s father, the Schnaidmans
regularly purchase books on theIntohpiocnoof arvoeiflut to provide to people during
their time of need.

celebration of their son Chanan’s Bar Mitzvah with the shul in Chevron on
the CBA Israel Mission in 2005.

the school library and library program from the ground up. Over the past 20
years, she has had the privilege to teach hundreds of children in our
community. Esther has actively participated in the local chapters of the NJ

Both Shmuli (16) and Sorah (13) are group leaders, and Chaim (10) is looking
forward to being one too. Most importantly, the Rabbi and Chaviva are not
only their Rav and Rebbetzin, they are role models from whom they have
gained invaluable spiritual and emotional support.
