Cindy’s Blended Family
Cindy had a very happy family where she lived with her parents in a quaint cottage. Life was
great as a traditional family as she had very doting parents who loved her immensely. However, her
life changed when her father passed away due to colon cancer. Cindy was distraught as it was the end
of the world for her. However, her mother was a strong shoulder for her to lean on. With her mother’s
support, she accepted her father’s untimely demise and looked forward to a single-parent family.
Life was blissful with her mother as both mother and daughter got on well together. She worked
hard at school while her mother kept her nose to the grindstone. They would have their dinner
together and spent the night watching movies and eating popcorn. The weekends would be spent
going to the movies or shopping or simply having a lazy day at home. The bottom line was they were
happy together. Cindy was contented with life and did not wish for anything more.
However, a year later, things began to change as her mother would come home late every day
on the pretext of working late. Cindy began to fend for herself as she would make her own meals and
watch television on her own. She began to miss the good times she had with her mother. One Saturday,
Cindy’s mother told her that she had to work on a project and she would be home very late. Cindy
decided to meet up with her friends to watch Trolls World Tour, the latest Universal Pictures’ animated
film. After having a scrumptious dinner at Pizza Hut, the girls went to see a film. They took their seats
near the entrance, chatting merrily as they wolfed down the caramel popcorn and washed them down
with chilled Pepsi.
Just then, Cindy saw a silhouette of a very familiar woman. She peered intently and she had
goosebumps. It was her mother! She was with a man whom Cindy had never met. Her popcorn seemed
to have choked her! Warm, bitter tears rolled down her cheeks as she saw her mother holding the
man’s hands and walking to their seats. It began to dawn on her that her mother has been lying to her
for almost a year! She was not working late but she had a new love interest! Cindy was annoyed with
herself for being so gullible! While her friends were laughing at the antics of the characters, Cindy
was watching her mother and the man intently with tears flowing freely from her eyes. She could not
believe that her mother would lie to her.
After the show, Cindy went home and called her grandparents who lived in the same town. In
between sobs, she narrated the incident. Her grandparents, two aunts, an uncle and a few cousins
were in her house within twenty minutes. Cindy hugged them and cried. She was glad that she had the
support of her extended family. Her grandmother consoled her and spoke gently to her. She reminded
Cindy that everyone deserved happiness, including her mother. Cindy sat quietly and pondered about
what her grandmother said. She realised she was being selfish. She looked at her extended family who
were chatting happily and she went to join them.
At midnight, her mother came. She was puzzled to see her relatives at home. She ran and hugged
Cindy, asking her if she was okay. Both mother and daughter hugged each other and cried. When they
were calmer, Cindy told her mother that she saw her mother with a man at the cinema. Her mother was
shocked. She told Cindy that the man was her colleague, Jamie, and that she loved him and wanted to
marry him. Cindy nodded her head and said that she wanted her mother to be happy. That night, her
relatives spent the night at her home.

The next day, her mother invited Jamie and his daughter for lunch. Cindy was introduced to Jamie
and his daughter, Karen, who was three years younger to her. They ate and chat. Cindy realised her
mother was happy. She had never seen her mother this happy ever since her father died. She wanted
her mother to be happy. She liked Karen, too. Karen is a cheerful girl and soon the girls got on well.
Cindy learnt that Karen is not Jamie’s biological daughter. He adopted her from an orphanage when she
was a baby. Cindy realised that Jamie is a kind man and would make them all happy.
Later in the evening, Cindy’s mother and Jamie announced that they would be getting married
soon. Cindy would now have a blended family where she would live with her stepfather and stepsister.
She was glad that everything turned out well.

Discuss with a friend, which of the following would be the best way to help him/ her?
(Suggested answer)
A : I think I would tell his parents as it is important that they know their son is moving in a wrong
direction. Smoking is a habit that dies hard. It is a habit that will take one to the grave. Since I am
concerned about him, I should do what is best for him. If I try to advise him, he will not listen to me
as I am his peer. When his parents confront him, he would be obliged to tell them.
B : I think we should advise him first. Telling the parents would be the last resort. They would be
unduly worried.
A : I am afraid that if things become worse, his parents may blame us for not letting them know. As you
know, smoking is the stepping stone to drugs. We should nip this problem in the bud.
B : I still think we need to talk to him first and find out the root cause to this smoking issue. If he is
smoking because he is stressed, then we will need to identify the reason for his stress.
A : I still think we should tell his parents. If not directly, let’s send them an anonymous letter.
B : I think you are putting the cart before the horse. Like I said before, informing his parents, either by
talking to him is futile.
A : Okay, let us begin by advising him.
B : Yes, I agree. So, the best way to help a friend who was caught smoking by the discipline teacher is to

Hi,
It’s sad to hear that you are quarantined, but it is for your safety as well as others. We have to make
a model volcano for our Science project. The things that you need to make the volcano are an empty
plastic bottle, newspaper strips, glue and masking tape. For the lava, you will need bicarbonate of
soda, red and yellow food colouring and white vinegar. You can get all the necessary things readily
at home or buy online from Lazada.

Unit 2 Life's Great Mysteries
Reading Checkpoint
A Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.
CONTOH Stella Castle’s Mystery
My friends and I love adventures. One day, I read about Stella Castle in the newspaper. It is an old
castle that has been converted into a hotel. According to the newspaper report, the castle is haunted.
People who visited this castle claimed that they have seen spirits and even heard them laughing.
Last week, my friends and I decided to visit this castle. We stood from afar and stared at the castle.
I had goosebumps as the castle is indeed spooky from afar. I told my friends about it, but they thought
that I was being ridiculous. Karim told me that there is a myth surrounding this castle. The castle was
built for British officers by local residents. It was a very big castle and there was no machinery at that
time. So, it took many years to build the castle and many labourers died in the process. People said that
these dead labourers haunted the castle.
That night, I decided to surf the Net to learn more about this mysterious castle. There were
many articles posted about this castle on the Net. Historians stated that many labourers died while
building the castle. The British officers built the castle in the 18th century when they were building the
railway tracks to collect local produce. Archaeologists found evidence in the form of human fossils. A
medium who was a guest at the castle has posted that she had communicated with the dead labourers.
Guests claimed they could hear sound of people hammering on the wall. My search was overwhelming.
I looked at the pictures of the castle in its heyday. It portrayed remarkable Tudor architecture.
As it was getting late, I decided to sleep. However, I was restless. I tossed and turned in my bed.
Suddenly, I heard an unusual sound. It was a buzzing sound. I was confused as I had never heard such
a sound before. I decided to investigate, hoping to discover some evidence to solve the mystery of the
buzzing sound. I sat quietly on the bed and observed around me. It was quiet again and I could not
hear the buzzing sound. Suddenly, I saw some bright lights. I gasped! It was a spirit of a boy walking in
my room. He turned to look at me and he had bloodshot eyes! It was he opened his eyes so wide and
wanted to swallow me alive. Suddenly, the boy disappeared!
It was bizarre! What did I see? Was it a ghost? Suddenly, something dawned on me. I know the
theory behind this ghost. It’s a hologram! I remembered one of my friends had brought a hologram
kit. I smiled as I knew that it was my friends’ prank. I went to meet them and pretended to be afraid.
They had a great time laughing at me. When they stopped laughing, I told them that I knew it was a
hologram. There was pindrop silence. Now, it was my turn to laugh.
I was glad that the mystery of the ghostly figure was solved. Now, I can sleep at ease and let the
ghosts of Stella Castle rest in peace.

B : I don’t think so. I think we should notify an archaeologist team as the archaeologists may be able to

A Haunting Experience
By Akif Rayyan
Last Saturday night, my friends and I went to see a horror film. The film ended at midnight. After having
a hot beverage, we rode our bicycles home.
We had to pass a banana plantation to reach home. As we chatted, we could smell strong jasmine
fragrance coming from the banana plantation. We stared at each other. Suddenly, we saw a young lady
standing by the side of the road. We were stunned to see her. She was petite and dressed in white. I felt sorry
for her to be out in the middle of the night. I asked her where she stayed and she pointed towards the road. I
offered her a ride and she sat on my pillion. My friends rode ahead of us. The lady did not talk much although
I tried to strike a conversation. After a few minutes, I was struggling to ride the bicycle. I was surprised as it
was a straight stretch of road, and not an incline. I turned back and I nearly fell off my bicycle. There was a
tombstone on my pillion! I jumped off my bicycle and screamed. My friends were equally shocked when they
saw the tombstone and suddenly, right in front of our eyes, the tombstone vanished! We were dumbfounded.
We left the scene in a hurry. I took a pillion ride from my friend.
From that day onwards, we never saw a late-night film. The hair-raising haunting experience is etched
in my mind.
