Subject Pronouns (pp. 7)
1. A subject is a person, place or thing that the sentence is about. We use subject
pronouns to take the place of nouns that are the subject of the sentence.
2. Words such as I, you, he, she, it, we or they are subject pronouns.
Examples:
(a) “I am ten years old,” said Ramesh.
(b) “You are very good at badminton,” said Peter to Aishah.
(c) Ben has a bicycle. He cycles in the neighbourhood every evening.
(d) Wendy isn’t interested in music. She likes arts and craft.
(e) My family and I Iive in a condominium. We live on the fifth floor.
(f) The boys are good at dancing. They are in a dance troupe.
CONTOH
Present Simple (pp. 8)
1. We use the present simple to talk about regular or habitual events.
2. We often use words/phrases such as always, normally, usually, sometimes, often,
every day or every morning with the present simple.
Question Words (pp. 22)
Question words are used to ask questions.

1. And is used to join words or sentences.
Examples:

2. But is used to show contrast or opposite.

Past Simple (pp. 26)
1. Past simple is a verb tense used to show a completed activity that happened in
the past.
2. For regular verbs, we add d or ed to the main verb.
(a) For verbs ending in -e, add -d.
Examples:
(i) She closed the windows because it was raining.
(ii) He jumped over the mud puddle.

(b) For verbs ending in consonant + y, we drop the -y and add -ied.
Examples:
(i) The pupils carried the books into the classroom.
(ii) My mother fried some chicken wings.
3. For irregular verbs, the verbs in the past simple are spelt differently.

(a) My father drove me to school this morning.
(b) The children went to the playground just now.
CONTOH‘be going to’(pp. 31)
1. The structure be going to is used to show something is going to happen.
Examples:
(a) It’s going to rain again soon.
(b) Look out! you’re going to fall into the hole.
(c) Be careful! you’re going to drop the tray if you rush.
2. It is formed with the verb to be (am, is, are) + going to + the base form of the verb.
Examples:
(a) I am going to cycle at the park this evening.
(b) Adira is going to wash the dishes after dinner.
(c) The boys are going to play football during recess.
(d) They are going to leave very early so they get to see the sun rise.
Short Answers (pp. 33)
1. Short answers are special forms to answer a question.
2. They are usually used because they are more polite.

3. They are easy to form. After the word “yes” or “no” you have to take the person
and the first word of the question. In negative answers you have to use the short
form.

CONTOH
Countable and Uncountable Nouns (pp. 37)
1. Nouns can be countable or uncountable.
2. Countable nouns can be counted. For examples: an apple, two apples, three
apples, etc.
3 Uncountable nouns cannot be counted. For examples: air, rice, water, etc.
A and An (pp. 39 (a))
1. A and an can only be used with nouns in the singular if we don’t mean a special
thing or person.
Examples:
a banana a car a monkey a football
an egg an accident an umbrella an eagle
2. Some can only be used in the plural if we don’t know the exact amount of something
or if we use nouns we cannot count, e.g. liquids.
Examples:

1. We use some and any with plural nouns and uncountable nouns.
2. Some is generally used in positive sentences.
3. Any is generally used in negative sentences.
Examples:
(a) I have some food left for you. (Positive - Uncountable)
(b) I don’t have any food left for you. (Negative - Uncountable)

1. A collective noun is a naming word used to refer to a group or number of animals,
people or things.
2. Here are some examples of common collective nouns used for people:
(a) A band of musicians
(b) A board of directors
3. Here are some examples of common collective nouns used for animals:
(a) An army of ants
(b) A flock of birds
4. Here are some examples of common collective nouns used for things.
(a) A bouquet of flowers
(b) A bunch of flowers
‘How Many’and‘How Much’ (pp. 41)
1. We use How many ... to ask about the number of things (countable).
2. We use How much ... to ask about the quantity of things. ( uncountable).
Examples:
(a) How many eggs are there in the nest? There are 5 eggs.

(c) How much rice is there in the bowl? There is a little.
Object Pronouns (pp. 56)
1. Words such as me, you, him, her, it, us and them are object pronouns.
2. Object pronouns tell what or who is receiving the action in a sentence.
3. This is how we use object pronouns.

Possessive Pronouns (pp. 57)
1. A possessive pronoun is a pronoun that shows possession or ownership.
2. We use possessive pronouns in place of a noun to avoid repetition.
3. Words such as mine, ours, his, hers, theirs and yours are possessive pronouns.
Examples:
(a) Is that Alan’s car? No, it’s mine.
(b) This house is theirs.
(c) These bags are ours.

Indefinite Pronouns and Adverbs (pp. 58)
1. Indefinite pronouns and adverbs don’t refer to any specific person, place or thing.
2. This is how we use indefinite pronouns and adverbs.

Note: ‘-one’ is more formal than ‘-body’. They have the same meaning.
3. We use ‘some-’ for affirmative sentences and questions.

(d) Let’s go somewhere for tea.
4. We use ‘every-’ for affirmative sentences and questions. ‘every-’ means all people/
things/places related to a situation.
(a) Everyone is having a wonderful time.

(c) She planned everything for the party.
(d) There are Christmas lights everywhere.
Comparative Adjectives (pp. 65)
1. Comparative adjectives are used to compare one noun to another.
2. For one-syllable and most two-syllable adjectives, we add -er to the adjectives +
than.
Examples:
(a) I am taller than my brother.

(b) The hut is smaller than the house.
3. For adjectives that have three or more syllables, we add more before the adjectives.
Examples:
(a) A rhinoceros is more dangerous than a hippopotamus.
(b) The camera is more expensive than the mobile phone.
Superlative Adjectives (pp. 80)
1. Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more nouns. For one-syllable
and most two-syllable adjectives, we add -est to the adjectives and the before
them.
Examples:
(a) This is the cheapest dish available at the restaurant.
(b) The watermelon is the biggest among these fruits.
2. For adjectives that have three or more syllables, we add the most before the
adjectives.
Examples:
(a) This is the most interesting movie I’ve ever watched.
(b) Miss Lee is the most beautiful lady in the contest.

‘Should’and Shouldn’t (pp. 85)
1. Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs (helping verbs).
To make suggestions and give advice
(a) should – We should eat a diet of a lot of vegetables and fruits.
(b) shouldn’t – You shouldn’t add too much sugar in your coffee or tea.
