Lina will have to share her bedroom with her baby sister. She will probably not be too happy about it at first.

B In class, tell your friends about your family and yourself.
Hi, everyone. Let me tell you about my family and myself . My name is
Yong Jay Sern and I’m twelve years old . I live in Batu Gajah, Perak ,
with my parents, my sister, Emilia, who is 16, and my brother, Justin, who is nine . And I’m the
middle child . I have just started my Remove Class in SMK Sultan Ibrahim . The lessons in
school are interesting and I have made some new friends . I enjoy my school life so far.
My father is an engineer and my mother is a housewife. My mother is also a great cook. She cooks
all sorts of dishes. Her nyonya cakes are very popular with many people, but I like her Italian cuisine most. She plans to
start a small business of her own soon. Right now my mother takes orders to cater for small parties. She will not cook
for more than 50 people at a time because she has no one around to help her.
During my free time, I like playing board games with my friends. My brother and I both enjoy playing
badminton. I am quite good at badminton, but my brother is much better than I am. Occasionally, my father plays

badminton as well. My mother never joins in as she doesn’t like playing outdoor games. Cooking is always her favourite
activity.
When I grow up, I want to be a teacher. I have always been in awe of my teachers. They are not only dedicated
teachers, but are also kind and caring to their students. It is through their exemplary behaviour that I was inspired to
become an educator as well.
Thank you.

Read and enjoy the story about Sara’s family.
I decided to give up hunting. My daughter, Sara, had always been unhappy that her father was a
hunter. She was never happy when I used to talk to her glowingly of my successful killing of tigers,
leopards and wild boars. It was not an easy decision for me because hunting was my only bread and
butter. The walls of my house used to be decorated with antlers and stuffed heads of wild deer and
leopards. Sara, however, was never happy about these prizes. Slowly with my reluctant permission, she
removed my ‘trophies’ and had them donated to wildlife conservation centres.
Now, I am working as a wildlife warden for the Wildlife Department. I am an officer who protects
wildlife. My job is to warn and if necessary, arrest poachers who hunt animals without a permit. It is also
my job to get medical aid for animals in distress as well as for villagers who have problems caused by
animals.
Recently, I received a distress call from an Orang Asli village deep in the jungle. The village chief
told me that a herd of elephants frequently terrorised his village and their farming land. My men and I
were later ferried to the village in a helicopter. We had to lure the elephants away using the carrot and
stick method. One group of rangers took up the rear and drove the elephants from the village using loud
drumbeats while another group attracted animals from the front end using sugar canes.
This kind of work now gives me greater satisfaction than hunting. My wife and Sara are very proud
of my new role as a protector of wildlife.

In about 120 words, write an essay about your family.
You may use the notes below as guidance.
• Your name • Family bonding time – what do your family do
• Your family members • Sports and outdoor games your family play
• Your relationship with your sibling(s)
My name is James Lee Wai Ming . I want to write about my loving family .
There are seven members in my family. They are my grandparents, both in their eighties, my parents,
and two sisters. I am the youngest of three siblings. Being the youngest, I must admit that my parents and
even my grandparents tend to pamper me more than my sisters. There are times when my sisters find this
quite annoying, but we still love each other very much. My sisters, Yee Ling and Yee Ping, are twins. They will
be sitting for their SPM examinations soon. Therefore, they study real hard and have no time for me. During
these few months, I always make sure to be quiet when they are studying. My sisters hope to obtain straight
As in their SPM. I wish them good luck.
My family enjoys sports and outdoor activities. At weekends, we often go out together. We spend a lot
of time playing games and sports. We love swimming very much. I had fond memories as a kid honing my
swimming skills while having the perfect Sunday morning with my parents. Imagine packing swimming
costumes, goggles, towels and floats for some fun family time – it will get us excited! Swimming is an activity
that can be fun and healthy too, as fitness benefits develop over time. Another sport we love to do together
is playing badminton. You know it is fairly easy for the whole family to get a piece of the action. Badminton
courts are easily available in our neighbourhood and community centre. Each parent can pair up with one
child, or it can be parents versus kids. So everyone gets involved in the sport for some solid bonding time.
We have our ups and downs, but blood is always thicker than water.

Connie : So Owen and Vijaya, do you have a hobby?
Vijaya : Yes. My hobby is gardening. Gardening is not only a pleasant and relaxing hobby, but it’s also a fantastic way
to boost your productivity.
Sufian : How?
Vijaya : Gardening allows me to relax and unwind. It also takes my mind off the daily tasks, homework and assignments.
You know I’ve a small plot of land in my parents’ garden where I grow flowering plants and non-flowering
plants. Whenever the flowers bloom, my little garden is an array of colours. It gives me much joy to see the
fruits of my labour.
Connie : You really do have green fingers. What about you, Owen?
Owen : I enjoy doing extreme sports in my free time. I tried the whitewater rafting the other day and I absolutely loved
it. Do you like extreme sports?
Connie : I think extreme sports are dangerous but I don’t mind watching the sports on TV.
Sufian : Extreme sports are all about the thrill. For some, it’s for pure fun, and for others, it’s about testing the limits
of what is humanly possible. They are thrill seekers who love being outdoors. The most extreme activity I’ve
tried is zip lining. I wore a helmet and safety gear provided. I wasn’t afraid to do it. Owen, count me in next
time.
Owen : Sure. Let’s do it together. What about you, Connie?
Connie : I love knitting in my free time. You know taking time out of a busy schedule to concentrate on making
something with your hands – perfect or imperfect, for yourself or someone else, it marks a moment when
you forgot the outside world. And you’ve something at the end to show for it. With just two needles and yarn,

1 Sequencing adverbs are words that organise your writing and speaking like first, second, third, next, then,
after that, lastly and finally.
2 We use sequencing adverbs when we give instructions, describe a process, or tell stories.
3 Using sequencing adverbs is a simple trick that improves your writing and speaking because it organises
your ideas into sections and gives them an order.
For example:
Kingston had a scary night. First, he heard a loud boom. Next, the lights went out. Then, he tried to use his
