Japan is located in eastern Asia and its capital city is Tokyo, one of the
largest cities in the world. Japan is considered an island country because it has
many islands. In fact, there are about 7,000 smaller islands around Japan!
Besides having numerous islands, Japan is also a mountainous region.
Almost four-fifths of Japan is covered with mountains. The highest peak and the
most famous mountain in Japan is Mount Fuji, a cone-shaped volcano.
There are many temples and shrines surrounding Mount Fuji. It is a popular
climbing spot especially during summer as that is the climbing season. In 2013,
Mount Fuji was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Japan can be a dangerous place due to its frequent earthquakes and many
volcanoes. Every year, about a thousand earthquakes hit Japan. There are
around 200 volcanoes and 60 of them are still active, which also include Mount
Fuji.
