C all Celtic festivals. On Halloween, 18th-century Scottish villagers drove sheep through hoops of rowan branches to protect them from ghostly mischief including sickness. 18 19 The fear of the number 13 is so pervasive in Western culture that many hotels and offices omit the 13th floor while airports in Western cities do not have a 13th gate. However, in other cultures, no one bats an eyelid when Friday the 13th rolls around. In Chinese culture, four is a bad luck number because the sound of the word is very similar to the word for death in most Chinese dialects. However, the water rose higher (12) but we had to leave in a rescue boat. At the relief centre, we met (13) their neighbours. We spent time talking, reading and waiting for news about the floods. I didn’t know then but we stayed there (14) from two days. When we finally returned home, I (15) finds our entire neighbourhood in a mess. There was mud and debris everywhere. 72 73 Exploring Nature When my father read about Kampung Pangsun, he thought it would be a good place for us to visit. The village is surrounded by lush greenery and there were many interesting nature activities to do. The villagers welcome city dwellers to spend the day or weekend to experience village life. When we got there, we met a guide who took us around the village. After that, he lead us on a hike through the jungle. He promised the trail would end at the most beautiful spot in the area. Along the trail, the guide talked about the surroundings. The hike lasted two hours so we were hungry by the time we reached the end. I was expecting a river and a picnic spot but I found the most spectacular waterfalls. The water flowed into a large pool of crystal clear water. It was so clear I could see smooth pebbles, tiny fish and frogs. The surrounding plants and trees were not only thick but also different shades of green. We quickly found a picnic spot with the best view of the waterfalls. After we had a picnic lunch, we decided to explore. My mother and brother went into the water while my father and I climbed to the top of the waterfalls. An hour later, we gathered at the picnic spot again for a short rest. After that, we took many photos and looked for fish in the pool. Soon it was time to hike back to the village. This time we took a little longer to get back because we were very tired. Once we reached the village, we thanked the guide and my father drove us home. Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24. 74 75 Travelling to Paradise To most people Tanjung Simpang Mengayau is a cape located in the northernmost tip of the island of Borneo. But to me, it is a piece of paradise. Not long ago, my family and I flew to Kota Kinabalu to begin our trip to the cape. We met our friendly guide there and he took us on a four-hour road trip. It wasn’t a smooth journey because there were potholes as well as uneven paths. As we approached the cape, our guide pointed out a bronze globe. He stopped the vehicle to let us explore the area. He told us about the history of the place and how it got its name. Then, came the most exciting part. We went down some steps and stood at the northernmost tip of the island. The fresh sea air blew against my face and I watched the waves crashing into land. The guide pointed to an island in the distance and I spotted a lighthouse there. After spending some time there, our guide drove us to our hotel. The next morning, my family and I spent the day on the white sand beach in front of our hotel. I swam and then, snorkelled. The clear water made it easy to see the colourful coral and fish. Everything was so beautiful. The following day, our guide drove us to a nearby village. A fisherman invited us onboard his boat to explore the coast. Then, he went out to sea to teach us how to fish. We only caught a few. Since they were tiny, we released them back into the sea. We returned to our hotel after 2 p.m. and had a late lunch. On the last day, our guide took us to some stalls selling souvenirs. There were so many beautiful local handicrafts. My parents bought a lot for family and friends. I bought a few for my friends. After shopping, we returned to Kota Kinabalu to get a flight back to Kuala Lumpur. I would never forget how I felt when I was there. I felt relaxed and contented just enjoying nature’s beauty. Read the text and answer questions 25 to 34. 76 77 Questions 35 to 40 You are going to read an article about travelling with a friend. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet. Travelling with a Friend One way to have fun and feel safe when you travel long-distances is to go with a friend. A good friend or travelling companion can make a holiday more adventurous and exciting. 35 If you don’t know your companion’s expectations and vice versa, you may have disagreements, feel anxious and dissatisfied during the trip. The trip will be a disaster and your friendship will suffer. The first thing to do is to talk to your friend at length about the goals and expectations for the trip. 36 Talk about how much money you have put aside for the trip and how and where you want to spend it. 37 Discuss the places you want to visit, how long you want to stay in each place, activities you want to do and expected time to get from one place to another. Remember to talk about how much time you want to spend together and separately. 38 After that, create a new itinerary that takes both your needs and wants into consideration. 39 Is your friend a morning person like you? Does your friend like to do a lot of shopping? If your friend needs more time to shop and you don’t, use that time to do things separately. After taking all these steps, you will have all the information you need to plan a holiday that meets both your requirements. 40 And both of you must agree to them. Only then you and your friends can start the holiday without any doubts about each other’s expectations. A Next, share a tentative itinerary with your friend. B However, choosing the right companion is very important. C The same applies if you choose to travel in a big group. D Lay out all the suggestions and ideas. E After that, talk about your travel styles. F As a result, both of you will have a worry-free holiday. G Compromise and make changes to the itinerary. H This includes discussing the budget. Let’s spent this Sunday at the mall to browse the shops. We can make a list of all the available jobs and then, decide which is the best for us. Please write soon. Bye! A4 A5 Practice 2 Suggested answer Dear cousin, I’m pleased to hear about your plan. Since there are several centres, you can choose one that meets all your requirements. Let me tell you how I picked my leisure centre. Firstly, choose a centre that offers a variety of interesting activities. Secondly, make sure the fees are affordable. Thirdly, pick a centre that is near your house. Finally, make sure the equipment and facilities are in good condition. All the best! Bye, Shin Zer [email protected] [email protected] Leisure centre Practice 3 Suggested answer Dear Karim, Taking a taxi, bus or trishaw are the usual ways to get around the city. If I were you, I’d do something different like joining a cycling tour. You can rent a bicycle for a small fee and cycle to various attractions. Moreover, most of the attractions are located close to one another so you don’t have to be on the road or in the sun for long. Have a wonderful holiday. Bye, Danish Practice 4 Suggested answer Dear Jenny, I’m very excited to hear that you’re going camping. Shelter, food and clothes are the important essentials and you’ve probably packed these items already. One other item you need is a first-aid kit. Make sure it has a wide range of items such as medications, bandages and sting and bite kits. The items included should be able to treat many injuries, wounds or stings that you may suffer. That’s all for now. Bye, Mira Practice 5 Suggested answer Dear Arash, Wow! I must say both trips are really amazing and I can understand your dilemma. If I were you though, I would go for the horse caravan trip in Ireland. Hot-air balloon is amazing but it only lasts a short while. Meanwhile, you get to travel on a horse caravan for almost the entire duration of your trip! You will also get to visit places along the route and not just observe them from a distance. I hope this helps. Bye, Jun Practice 6 Suggested answer Dear Evan, I love camping trips! About what you said regarding your grandma’s advice though, I think it is just a superstition. Some cultures do believe that certain numbers bring bad luck. Those superstitions have their origins from ancient beliefs. Personally, I do not believe in any of these superstitions as they are not based on scientific facts. If I were you, I would join both camping trips regardless of what dates they are planned on. Have fun and write soon. Bye, Jason Practice 7 Suggested answer Dear Elaine, Your decision to keep yourself fit and healthy is a good one. Zumba and yoga are both helpful to stay in good shape. I myself have never tried Zumba but I do yoga Answers Praktis Top Eng F2.indd 5 3/15/23 10:49:14 AM CONTOH

A6 A7 with my parents. I have to say I prefer yoga as it does not involve rigorous physical movements. It helps me stay calm and focus, especially before an examination. It can be done at home. I can choose my own time and set my own pace. Bye! Zuriah Practice 8 Suggested answer Dear Maria, Having an account on a social media is quite the norm nowadays. You can keep up with the latest news and stay in contact with friends and family. Both Facebook and Twitter are good social networking sites. They both have security measures that users can use to protect their personal information from getting released on the Internet. You can choose either one. Do learn about their security tools so you can keep your account private. All the best. Maureen TOPIC 7 Practice 1 Suggested answer Extra-curricular activities such as sports, clubs and special interest groups are fun. They also help students occupy their time wisely. There are many advantages of participating in extra-curricular activities. Firstly, they relieve stress. These activities give students an adrenaline rush and this helps soothe their mind and body. Secondly, they help develop team spirit. When students participate in group activities, they learn about sportsmanship, loyalty and empathy. Thirdly, students get to apply classroom learning to real-life situations outside the classroom. This promotes thinking skills. Finally, students get to meet like-minded individuals. They meet many people, make friends and at the same time strengthen their social skills. There is no doubt that extra-curricular activities enriches students’ life. They help create well-rounded and contented individuals. Practice 2 Suggested answer A good diet is one of the best ways to look after your health. This means eating the right type of food and the correct amounts. To begin with, plan your meals. Refer to the food pyramid to know what types of food and how much of it to eat. Next, choose food rich in nutrients. Eat enough carbohydrate so you have the energy to carry out your daily activities. Add food such as lean meat, poultry and fish because your body needs protein to grow and build muscles. Finally, have plenty of vegetables and fruits. They contain vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function properly. Choosing the right types of food for each meal is important. When you eat right, you stay healthy. Practice 3 Suggested answer Cyberbullying happens over electronic gadgets. Bullies send or share negative, false and harmful messages and photos to cause hurt. There are several ways to deal with cyberbullying. To begin with, don’t respond immediately to a nasty comment. A bully wants to upset you. Don’t give them what they want. Instead, stay calm and don’t make the situation worst by sending a nasty response. Next, take screenshots of the comments and photos as evidence if you later want to report the bully. In addition, use safety tools on social media sites to report and block the person. Cyberbullying is a serious issues. It can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression and issues with selfesteem. Therefore, use the above tips to stay safe online. Practice 4 Suggested answer A part-time job means flexible working arrangements. Part-timer workers work fewer days and hours per week than full-time workers. Answers Praktis Top Eng F2.indd 6 3/15/23 10:49:14 AM CONTOH

A6 A7 that certain things can bring good luck such as a horse shoe and a four-leaf clover. In my opinion, we should not believe in these superstitions because they are not based on any scientific facts. Being obssessed with them might even hinder our advancement towards modernisation as a community. Practice 7 Suggested answer Practice 8 Suggested answer Recreational activities are activities we do in our free time to enjoy, relax and stay healthy. My favourite recreational activity is going cycling in the countryside. I usually go cycling in the countryside at weekends. I go cycling with my family as we all like to cycle. We especially love to cycle in the countryside because the air is fresher and it is less hectic than the city. The slower pace of life there is relaxing and calming. We even get to make friends with some of the villagers. The benefits of cycling in the countryside is vast, There are many benefits of working part-time. The most important reason is students get to earn extra money. It allows them to save for their future and learn the value of money, therefore spending wisely. They also get to learn how to manage money. In addition, students get on-the-job training. They get to learn how to multitask, improve their time management skills and how to juggle added responsibility. Popular places that employ students on a part-time basis include gift shops, grocery stores, bookshops, cafes or pet stores. These are great places for students to gain valuable job experience. Practice 5 Suggested answer Everyone has their own dream holiday destination. My dream holiday destination is Nepal, the land of mountains. I would like to go there because I want to see Mount Everest. I like mountains very much and it would be a dream come true to see the highest mountain in the world. I would like to join an expedition to hike to the base camp. I would also like to experience the local culture and cuisine. Shopping for souvenirs would, of course, be one of my to-do list. I think I would really have a great time in Nepal. If I get to join an expedition to the base camp, it would be a great personal achievement and a moment I would treasure forever. Practice 6 Suggested answer Superstitions are beliefs that are not based on human reason or scientific knowledge but are connected with old ideas about magic and supernatural beings. There are many examples of common superstitions. Believing that certain numbers bring bad luck is one of the most common ones. The fear of black cats is another. This stems from ancient beliefs that black cats were favoured by witches. Some people also believe Hi Ruben, I heard you have been studying non-stop these few days. However, you need to give yourself some time to relax. Short breaks are important to help you rejuvenate and destress. It will also help you to be more focused in your next study session. There are some easy things to do during your short breaks. You can take a short walk or listen to some music. Take an hour or two to watch a movie at home or use that time to read some comics. You can even make calls to friends and family. Trust me, after taking short breaks, you will feel more energised and motivated. There are many benefits of taking the train. First, train stations are in the town or city centre. You can catch one easily. You don’t need to spend time and money to travel out of the city to the airport. Moreover, the rail network is large so it connects cities and small towns. There is also no restrictions on luggage.
