Cyberbullying
This digital era has brought us so much (0) convenience and ease. However, it also gave rise to a
new form (1) of bullying known as cyberbullying. Also called cyberharassment, it is a type
of bullying which occurs online and by using electronic means. It is not an issue to be taken lightly. If
you (2) receive rude comments or nasty messages, you are a victim of cyberbullying. It might
sound petty but if cyberbullying prolongs, the particular victim (3) might feel depressed and
resort to suicide. One classic example is Sulli, a Korean celebrity, who committed suicide in October 2019
(4) due to severe depression from being cyberbullied. As such, something needs to be done to
stop cyberbullying.
So how do we (5) deal with cyberbullying? Firstly, do not respond. Bullies are
(6) thrilled when they get a reaction as it gives them reason to strike again. Therefore, show no
sign of stress. After all, ignorance is bliss. If the bullying recurs even without response, you can block
those messages. Next, (7) seek help if you cannot manage on your own. Talk to an adult for
solutions or comfort if you are emotionally affected. If and when (8) necessary , you can also report
those bullies. There is usually an address or a link at the end of each website, which allows you to do
so. A police report can also be (9) lodged if things get out of hand. In order to report cyberbullying,
you will need evidence. Therefore, save any proof of offensive images or messages to assist investigation and
enable proper action to be taken.
Since cyberbullying is showing no sign of (10) slowing down with the ever
increasing amount of internet users, we need to be wise and know the steps to be
taken if we were to become a victim of such crime.

Malaysian Rainforests
Malaysian rainforests are among the (0) oldest rainforests in the world. An
example of rainforests is the Taman Negara Rainforest, which is (1) estimated
to have been around for more than 130 million years, implying that dinosaurs
probably roamed the place before. Our rainforests have so much to offer
(2) besides keeping our planet healthy. With great diversity in plant species, scientists have discovered
many plants with medicinal values and that can be used as herbs. Some examples are such as camphor,
cinnamon and nutmeg, to name a few. In addition, Malaysian rainforests (3) are home to hundreds
of animal species and thousands of insect species. Some of those creatures found in our rainforests are
(4) unique and not found anywhere else in the world. The rainforests are also the natural habitat
of endangered wildlife such as the Malayan tiger and the Sumatran rhinoceros. Even the largest flower
(5) in the world, Rafflesia, can be found in our rainforests. How fascinating is that!
Being aware that our rainforests are precious, there is a need to preserve them. Stricter laws should be
enforced by the government or local authorities to (6) curb deforestation and poaching of wildlife
as both these human activities adversely (7) affect the natural flora and fauna species. Not only that,
(8) more rainforests should be gazetted as national parks or forest reserves where neither logging
nor hunting is allowed. As (9) individuals , we can play our role by reducing the consumption of paper
and wood. Whenever possible, recycle paper and cardboard boxes to (10) cut down on the use of raw
material needed and the emission of greenhouse gases, which take place when producing new paper.
So, let’s do our part today to save our rainforests from further destruction.

English Form 5 Topic 4 Gapped Text
Topic 4
1 In Part 4 of Paper 1, there are gapped text questions.
2 Gapped text questions evaluate students’ ability to connect ideas in a comprehension.
3 There are six sentences removed from the paragraphs. Test takers are required to choose from the
eight sentences given in the box.
4 Choose the correct sentences to match the gaps in the text/ article/ passage.
5 Write the correct letter (A — H) in the answer sheet.
Gapped Text Strategies
The gapped text questions require careful attention. The first thing to do is to read the entire passage/
article from start to finish carefully. Think about what information might be missing and make a short
note in each gap.
CONTOH
Read all the sentences (A — H) that have been pulled out from the passage/ article. Underline any
reference word(s).
Then, go back to the passage/ article and read the sentences that come before and after the missing
sentences. These sentences will help you figure out what ideas come before and after.
Pay special attention to pronouns and subject-verb agreement when choosing a sentence for the
missing gap. For example, if the sentence before a gap has the word ‘he’ in it, then you know that
the next sentence shouldn’t refer to an ‘it’ or a ‘they’. Check that any reference words and other
language connections fit in the context.
In the missing sentences, identify contrasting statements. Go back to the passage/ article and find
sentences that indicate a transition is coming.
After you have placed all of the sentences into the gaps, go back and read the passage/ article to
see if it sounds right. If not, locate which paragraphs sound out of place.
You don’t have to start with the first gap. Start with the easiest gap first and work your way up to the
hardest one.
Read the whole passage/ article to check that if it makes sense. If you are not sure, make a sensible
guess. Don’t leave any gaps empty.

Model Guided Writing Unit 5: The Environment
Theme: Health & Environment
Your class has been discussing what they can do to help the world and your English language teacher has
asked you to write an essay about what you can do to help the world.
In your essay, you should write about:
• what are the issues or problems the world is facing
• what can you do for the world
• reasons for your choice
Write your essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.
Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style.
There are so many things that I would like to do to help the world.
I would like to help save our environment. Man in the name of development has created a mess of our
environment that has led to frightening climate change. If we do not act fast, we would soon not have a world
to live in. We do not need wars to destroy the world, but the acts of irresponsible people would be enough
to create chaos and devastate the world. Therefore, I aim to join organisations that are working to create a
better environment. I would help them campaign to save our earth by using less plastics, recycling paper
and aluminium cans, and reusing various discarded things in the attempt to reduce waste. I would go online
and educate people on the dangers of global warming.
Deforestation is another issue that should be tackled. By cutting down forests, we are depriving animals
and plants of their natural habitat, driving them to the brink of extinction. The extinction of numerous
animal species and plants will affect the balance of nature, which in turn will affect mankind. Without
forests, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will increase, giving rise to the greenhouse effect. I would do my
part by planting trees and other plants around my neighbourhood and in my garden. This will bridge the
gap between humans and Nature.
I would urge all my friends and classmates to help create a garden school. Our school would not be a
concrete jungle but a cool welcoming learning environment.
As the saying goes, ‘Charity begins at home’. If we do a bit at home and at school, we will be taking the
first step to save the world.

Extended Writing
1 Part 3 of Paper 2 consists of text stimuli, and three text stimuli are provided.
2 Test takers are required to write a 200- to 250-word response based on any one of the text stimuli.
3 It can be in the form of an article, a review, a story or a report.
4 Test takers will be assessed on their ability to carry out the detailed instructions given.
5 Test takers will also be expected to analyse the questions given in the stimulus and develop the ideas
to come up with relevant points of their own, which may be in the form of opinions, details, reasons,
examples, comparisons, etc.
6 Marks will be awarded for mentioning the questions supplied in the stimulus.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Tackling Part 3 of Paper 2 Effectively
Select the best points
While planning your response to the stimulus, pull out as many ideas as possible from your memory.
Then, sift through all those ideas and choose the most effective and relevant ones that answer the
questions given in the stimulus. Brainstorming always helps.
CONTOH
Select the best structure or approach
A good essay should be well-organised. Decide the order in which you want to present each idea. Try
to engage more interesting and creative approaches to your selected question.
Free yourself to write expressively and fluently
Once you have selected the stimuli that you are going to write about, you are free to focus on your
writing style. Make sure you have included all the questions required or you will lose marks.
Pace yourself
Pace yourself according to the time and points given.
Lower the stress factor
Imagine yourself in the examination hall. You are trying your very best to complete your essay when
the invigilator says, ‘Ten more minutes…’ Well, if you didn’t have a plan, you might panic so much that
you couldn’t think of anything anymore. With a plan, you can just calmly focus on your last task or
point.
Check for errors
Always check your answer and make corrections if necessary. This would include the use of tenses,
subject-verb agreement, prepositions, gerunds, to-infinitives, articles, etc. Punctuation marks and
spelling should also be corrected. Marks can be lost if the examiner cannot read your handwriting.
