72 73 Bird-watching In Your Spare Time My uncle is a nature guide (0) whose is also an avid birdwatcher. Last Sunday, I joined a group he (9) were leading on a bird-watching outing. All the participants (10) have their bird handbook and binoculars. My uncle lead them through the jungle. He reminded everyone to listen closely to the (11) sound of the birds. We kept our eyes focused (12) up the tree tops. When we heard chirping, my uncle (13) scanning the branches to locate a bird. Group members tried to identify the bird based on the colour of the feathers. (14) Unless they could not identify the bird, my uncle would tell (15) theirs which page to look in the book. Sometimes, he would mimic the sounds to (16) attracting birds in the area. I was amazed to see my uncle in action but I also enjoyed watching the birds in their natural habitat. How to Increase School Club Memberships As the future president of the English Language Club, there are many activities you can organise to increase the number of student members. I have several ideas for you. Games are not only fun but also able to help students learn new things easily. We can have many language games that are geared to help students practise grammar and vocabulary skills. Students feel more confident to speak in groups when they know how to use grammar and vocabulary correctly. Let’s organise language-based games regularly. Another way to increase our club membership is to have competitions. Of course, we can have board games such as Scrabble or Boggle. But we can also have spelling challenges. And we can start with simple words and slowly progress to more challenging words. These competitions are not only about winning prizes, of course. Students can expand their vocabulary, learn the meaning of a wide range of words as well as practise how to pronounce new words correctly. We can consider organising poetry and short-story writing competitions. We can offer prizes for these competitions and print the winning entries in our school newsletter. Finally, we can organise excursions to public libraries, galleries or museums. We can also take students for poetry recitations or meet-the-author sessions. There are creative writing talks and language workshops to think about. Types of games: 17. 18. 19. Possible field trips destination: 22. 23. 24. 74 75 Read the text and answer questions 25 to 34. PART 4 Visiting Interesting National Parks There are national parks around the world. They are parts of a land that are protected by governments in order to conserve the flora and fauna living in the area. National parks are important places to visit for several reasons. We can learn a lot about the environment and wildlife at national parks. As you know, national parks are home to species of plant and animal life that can only be found in a certain place and nowhere else. Therefore, we can get a glimpse of nature’s natural beauty up close. Furthermore, some indigenous tribes have been living in areas that are now designated as national parks, for centuries. Visiting national parks allows people to learn about their history as well as discover how they live their daily lives. There are many national parks that are well-known for their unique landscape and features. In Malaysia, why not visit the youngest and smallest park located in Penang. Set up in 2003, the Penang National Park has hiking trails that offer views of the lush greenery and sea. Other than trails, there is a 250-m long canopy walkway. If you are in Thailand, go to Khao Yai National Park. This 2100 sq km park was founded in 1962 making it the first national park in the country. There are hiking trails through the thick forest that take visitors to a waterfall. Look out for endangered animals such as bears, elephants and pythons too. Halong Bay is located in Vietnam. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular places to visit in the country. Besides caves and trails to explore, the bay has a coastline dotted with more than 1000 islands. Visitors can hike to different viewing points along the bay to look at the islands or watch the sunset. The Hallasan National Park in South Korea is well-known for its unique geological features. There are several beautiful caves as well as the world’s largest lava tube. As lava tube is a natural tunnel, that was formerly filled with molten lava but now has solidified lava flow. Other than that, visitors can hike to Mount Halla, the highest peak in South Korea, to enjoy the surrounding beauty. In Taiwan, there is Taroko National Park. It has picturesque waterfalls, stunning peaks and hiking trails. Interestingly, most part of this 900 sq km park can be explored via a train. Other attractions include gouges, cliff-side temples and limestone cliffs. In conclusion, no matter which national park you visit, explore it leisurely so you can enjoy its beauty as well as the peace and quiet of the natural outdoors. 76 77 You are going to read a text about the joy of having hobbies. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet. A Group activities can be a lot of fun. B Firstly, healthy hobbies can boost mental alertness. C Hobbies can help you to reduce stress in your life. D Any type of sports also requires physical activity. E There are many categories of hobbies. F Most people enjoy outdoor activities. G Hobbies also help prevent boredom from setting in. H This means your mind is continuously stimulated. PART 5 Questions 35 – 40 [6 marks] The Joy of Having Hobbies Hobbies are activities or interests that you do in your free time. They are carried out for pleasure or to relax. 35 General hobbies include outdoor and sports activities. The other categories include competitive, educational, observational and collection hobbies. All the activities in these categories can be further divided into outdoor and indoor activities. It is good to have hobbies because they offer many benefits. 36 Participating in these types of activities allows you to learn new things. Moreover, it helps you recall and retain information previously known. It also forces you to think creatively. 37 Besides learning new thing to keep your mind active, enjoying what you do can boost your mood. Hence, hobbies keeps you in a good mood. 38 When you fill your time doing something exciting, you will not only have a fun time but also live a healthy lifestyle. For instance, participating in extreme sports allows you to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You can challenge yourself to do something scary or difficult to boost your confidence or overcome fears. 39 Therefore, doing sports regularly helps you maintain good health and fitness. Finally, doing any type of group hobbies can help expand your social circle. 40 Furthermore, you not only learn new skills better but also can make new friends when you participate in group activities. Moreover, participating in activities with existing friends can help strengthen friendships. All in all, hobbies bring joy into our lives. I believe everyone should have at least one hobby to enrich their lives. PraPT3 Eng T3 Model Test Paper.indd 76 28/03/2023 3:34 PM CONTOH

Both of you will have fun cooking together and you’ll get to eat some delicious food after that. Bye! Harini [email protected] [email protected] Cousin’s visit Practice 2 Suggested answer Hello! You can learn a lot about the environment when you participate in the activities you suggested. However, I think you’ll learn more if you join a nature club. Check out your community or leisure centre. A nature club organises activities on a regular basis and it offers a wide range of activities such as field trips, recycling and cleanup campaigns and guided activities. You’ll learn about the flora and fauna and different ways to protect the environment. All the best! A4 A5 Practice 3 Suggested answer Hi! I think it’s a great idea to start preparing for our exams early. I agree with you that we should do regular revision every week. We can meet either on Saturday or Sunday. During our study session, we can discuss topics we don’t understand, do practice questions together and then, check our answers and even quiz each other. I think this strategy will instill good habits such as discipline, being organised and working hard. Write soon! Rohan [email protected] [email protected] How to prepare for your exams Practice 4 Suggested answer Hello Chloe! I’m sure you’re going to have a great time! A village has a lot to offer. When you aren’t spending time with your grandparents, you can explore the village. You can ask your grandparents to introduce you to some neighbourhood children who are around your age. You’ll not only make new friends but also learn about the village. Why not ask your grandparents about community activities? You can participate in those too. Have fun! Patia Practice 5 Suggested answer Hi! I’m sure you’ll enjoy any outdoor sport you decide to do. If I were you, I’d pick a sport that interests you the most first. Lavinia Practice 6 Suggested answer Dear Derrick, We shouldn’t stop eating sweet food or drink soft drinks altogether. We already have very little of these types of food. Why don’t we take up a new sport? We can join a sport together so it won’t be scary to try something new. Let’s choose a sport we both like which is also high intensity. We’ll get a good workout and sweat a lot. Write soon! Your pal, Alex Practice 7 Suggested answer Dear Shreeya, I’ve a suggestion that will surprise your sister. I know she loves to spend her free time wisely so sign her up for an activity at a recreational centre. Choose one that you know she really wants to learn. Then, sign up for it on her behalf. All the best! Navinna [email protected] [email protected] Birthday gift PraPT3 Eng T3 Answers.indd 5 28/03/2023 3:37 PM CONTOH
A6 A7 Practice 8 Suggested answer Dear Ai Ling, Yes, I know how much you love music. I’ve a few suggestions that won’t burst your budget. You can attend a concert, a play, a musical festival or watch a musical performance. You should buy a ticket for matinee shows as the ticket price is very affordable. Surf the internet for fairs and events that offer free concerts or performances. I hope I’ve given you some useful ideas. Your cousin, Jessie [email protected] [email protected] Music-related activities TOPIC 7 Practice 1 Suggested answer Good friends possess many admirable qualities that allow them to support and love the people around them. What are these qualities? First, good friends should be honest. Though they do not need to tell you everything, they must present a true picture of themselves when they are with you. Being supportive is another quality. Good friends support your goals and do not judge your decisions. In addition, good friends are respectful of your feelings and views. They do not force you to do something that goes against your views. Finally, they are trustworthy. They can keep your secrets and speak up for you when you are in trouble. To sum up, good friends shoulder many responsibilities. Not many people can bear these responsibilities therefore, choose your friends wisely. Practice 2 Suggested answer Our Nature Society had a recycling campaign last week. This is how the members planned for it. First, we identified what recyclables to collect. We choose paper, glass and aluminium items. Next, we identified a centre to collect the recyclables at the end of the campaign. We found a nearby centre that agreed to collect and pay us for the recyclables. Then, we organised a collection system in our school. We placed bins at the canteen and school entrance because they were easily accessible. Finally, we organised activities to raise awareness. We made announcements, put up posters and organised talks and competitions. All in all, the campaign was a success. It created a lot of interest and awareness about recycling among the students. Practice 3 Suggested answer Recently, I went to Redang Island to participate in a clean-up programme. I spent most of my time diving and cleaning the reefs. On the first day, I joined the other volunteers to clean up the beach. There was so much rubbish that we spent the entire day cleaning the beach. The next day, we gathered at the beach to go diving. Once I got into the water, I started collecting rubbish stuck in the reefs. I had to be very careful because I did not want to damage the corals. The next day, we went out to clean the reef again. I had a good time learning about reefs and helping to protect them. I cannot wait to participate in the next clean-up. Practice 4 Suggested answer Last Saturday, I had my first water ski lesson. It was at a lake in Putrajaya. I was nervous about my first lesson. Thankfully, the instructor was friendly and patient. First, I did some warm-up exercises. Then, I learnt how to hold a rope properly and practised different standing positions. Next, I learnt hand signals to help me communicate with the person in the boat. Then, I wore a life jacket and got into the water. For my attempt, I held a learner bar attached to the boat. After a few rounds, I got used to balancing in the water so I used a rope. What a thrilling experience! My first lesson was wonderful. I am so glad I decided to try a new sport. PraPT3 Eng T3 Answers.indd 6 28/03/2023 3:38 PM CONTOH
A6 A7 Practice 7 Suggested answer I am open to trying new types of food. Recently, I ate a sandwich using a baguette. A baguette is a type of French bread that is thin and long. I loved its texture and taste so I decided to find out more about it. It is crisp and hard on the outside and soft on the inside. The trick to choose a good baguette is to look for a crisp, golden brown crust with slits. When you tap on the crust, listen for a hollow sound. Then, take a whiff of it. A freshly-baked baguette has a sweet, toasty and slight yeast smell. Inside, the bread should be off-white and have uneven holes. Baguette is great eaten as a sandwich. Why not try one today? Practice 8 Suggested answer Mobile phones is a modern-day convenience. They speed up communication and allows access to facilities and services easily. Mobiles phones have many disadvantages too. First, they can be addictive. People spend a lot of time interacting with people they hardly know instead of making meaningful face-to-face connections. Moreover, people who are on their phones all the time are more exposed to cyberbullying. Bullies can send hurtful messages directly to their phones. Furthermore, they can affect your health. Radiation emitted from mobile phones can cause headaches or earaches. Finally, keeping up with the latest phone models is a costly habit. Companies offer new models regularly and they are not cheap. Though there are many disadvantages, mobile phones are important. I believe people can enjoy their benefits when used in moderation. Practice 5 Suggested answer Houses and apartments are two types of dwellings that people call home. Houses are spacious. They have more rooms and a garden. People choose houses mainly for the space. Apartments are compact. Every room is smaller and there is no garden. It can get claustrophobic especially for big families. As houses are bigger than apartments, renting or buying houses are more expensive than apartments. On the other hand, apartments offer amenities such as a swimming pool, gym and playground in the building itself. This saves time and makes life convenient for people living in apartments. People choose to live in a house or an apartment based on their needs. I believe it is important to choose a dwelling that makes me feel comfortable and happy. Practice 6 Suggested answer Dear cousin, Early Sunday morning, my friends and I participated in a mini bird race. A guide accompanied each team along the race trail. My friends and I were in a team. We used our binoculars to look for special features and colours of the birds on the tree tops to help us identify the birds specified in the race list. Once any of us spotted a listed bird, we wrote it down in our log book. We showed the book to the judges at each checkpoint. I felt proud each time a judge checked and stamped it. Five hours later, all the teams arrived at the final checkpoint. Though my team did not win, we learnt a lot about birds. That’s all for now! You can paint the walls, repaint your study tables or bookshelf and rearrange the furniture. The new layout will be a refreshing change that will lift your spirits. I think you and your sister will enjoy designing and redecorating together. If you do this project, I’d like a photo of your bedroom after you’ve redecorated it. Bye, Trisha [email protected] [email protected] Home improvement idea Part 2 Suggested answer Extreme sports are considered dangerous. They include elements of speed, great height, physical strength and specialized gear. The only extreme sport I have tried is bungee jumping. I had butterflies in my stomach before the jump. I watched intently as the safety assistants attach two harnesses to my body. I listened carefully to their instructions too. I felt my heart beat fast just before I jumped. After I leaped, I screamed as I felt the adrenaline rush. I forced my eyes open as I was free falling towards the river down below. I felt joy and relief after that because I overcame my earlier fears. In conclusion, extreme sports are risky but thrilling. I believe people should try it at least once to challenge themselves.
