72 73 Visiting My First Tea Plantation Last month, my family and I (0) visits the Sabah Tea Garden. Established in 1978, it is the only organic tea plantation as well as the (9) larger commercial tea plantation (10) at Borneo. Located 692 metres above the sea, the garden offers a cool escape (11) for the heat and scenic views of Mount Kinabalu in the background. We (12) spends one night at the plantation in an English cottage so we could enjoy the ‘Tea Adventure’ tour. (13) They offers visitors the chance to harvest, process and drink some tea too. I (14) wear a traditional hat and basket as I picked the leaves. After that, I participated in activities to learn (15) when tea is processed. Other activities available at the plantation (16) includes night walks and bird-watching. We spotted insects and small animals during the walk and colourful birds the following morning. 72 73 A Family Holiday Dear Romesh, Thank you for the birthday gift; I’ve never had a parcel couriered for me before. What a wonderful surprise! Let me tell you about my holiday. I was in Kuantan, Pahang from 3 to 8 August. We stayed in a hotel near the beach. You know how much I love the sea so a seaside hotel was the logical choice of accommodation. I woke up early each morning and jogged along the beach before breakfast. On the third day, my family and relatives went to Chendor Beach to visit the Turtle Sanctuary and Information Centre. This beach is located in Terengganu. My uncle had told me earlier that the best time to visit the centre is between April and early September as it is the turtle nesting period. Since the turtles come ashore to lay eggs at night, we decided to spend the night near the area. Late in the evening, we waited on the beach until a green turtle came ashore. We watched it lay eggs and then, return to the sea. The following day, we went to the centre again to visit the hatchery and then, look at one-day old hatchlings. You should visit the centre if you get the chance. The centre is open every day except Mondays. Their visiting hours are from 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. on Tuesdays to Sundays. I got to go now. Please write when you are free. Bye! Suresh Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24. PART 3 Questions 17 – 24 Questions 17 to 24 Complete the following table. 74 75 Nature’s Beauty at Sungai Tekala Sungai Tekala Recreational Forest, located 43 km from Kuala Lumpur, is part of the Sungai Lalang Forest Reserve. This reserve lies in a state park forest known as the Taman Warisan Negeri Selangor. It is an unspoiled lowland forest that attracts nature lovers and hikers. Besides the rainforest, there is a river with crystal clear waters and waterfalls. Entry fee to the recreational park is RM2 for adults and RM1 for children. At the entrance, you will see a trail - the only main concrete path - that will lead you to a two-tiered waterfall. The waterfall is along a 3-km hiking trail. It is not a difficult trail so it is popular among novice hikers. Along the way, there are places to sit and rest too. Other than having a picnic at the waterfalls, there is a campsite nearby for visitors who want to spend a night at the park. The river in the park has rapids but it is very shallow. This means it isn’t suitable for swimming but it is another great location to picnics or take pictures. The park has signs advising visitors to maintain the park’s cleanliness. There are many rubbish bins but there are several spots, especially at the picnic areas, that are littered. Other facilities provided include public toilets and changing areas. The park is a haven for beautiful and unique flora and fauna. There are many insects to look at but if you are lucky, you may spot the Portia, a jumping spider, a type of spider that feeds on other spiders. But one animal you will see a lot of is monkeys. You can spot them as you enter the park entrance. They are used to humans and some will approach you to grab your food. Therefore, guard your food especially at the picnic sites. 76 77 Questions 35 to 40 You are going to read an article about living in a boarding school. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (1 – 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet. Boarding School Life in a boarding school is not only exciting but also hard work. Students attend classes, participate in extra-curricular activities and take part in enrichment classes as well as follow daily routines based on a fixed schedules. Many students want to study in a boarding school. 35 Students also have to spend months away from their family and home. However, these reasons aren’t enough to stop many students, who recognise the benefits of a boarding school, from studying there. To begin with, the environment at a boarding school is competitive. 36 There are many activities and programmes geared to help students excel in their studies and co-curricular activities. Doing well academically is one way to boost students’ resume. Boarding schools offer opportunities for students to take part in seminars, workshops and educational events. 37 All these extra credit help increase students’ chances to enter university or get a scholarship. Another reason is the opportunities presented to students. They get to participate in many educational programmes and national-level competitions. 38 Moreover, they have the opportunity to expand their horizons. 39 Students have to follow strict schedules. They have to manage their time well too. They must know how to balance all their duties; homework, self study, sports, extra curricular activities and school duties. In addition, they have to do all this on their own. It can be frightening, at least, for the first year. 40 Students learn about discipline, independence and responsibility at a young age. I believe these benefits outweigh any downside of studying in a boarding school. A Life at a boarding school can be tough. B It motivates students to work hard. C On the other hand, boarding school life is not easy. D There are strict rules to follow at a boarding school. E Many students suffer from homesickness for a few months. F Students get to challenge themselves with new activities. G The dedicated teachers focus on their students’ education. H These activities can further boost their resume. A4 A5 Practice 2 Suggested answer Hello Samantha, You must be very excited about her visit. I agree that you should organise the activities you mentioned. I know your pen pal will enjoy herself. If I were you, I’d also include a nature-based activity. Your hometown has beautiful parks, gardens, a lake and waterfall. You can take her on a family walk, hike or picnic to enjoy nature’s beauty. She’ll be able to explore the area and see flora unique to our country. Bye! Navina [email protected] [email protected] Fun activities Practice 3 Suggested answer Dear Jariah, It’s good to hear that your family is planning to go on a holiday. I think I’ve a solution to your problem. Why don’t you come to Penang? There is something for everyone here. There are lovely beaches so your Dad will be happy. There are many historical monuments for you to explore too. In addition, it is a bustling city so your Mum will not be disappointed either. Please let me know what your family decides. Bye! Your loving cousin, Najwa Practice 4 Suggested answer Dear Fawwah, I’m glad you asked me what I thought because I’ve been thinking about including an educational activity during the holidays too. I think we should go to the Science museum and sign-up for some activities. They have many activities and Science-based shows for our age group. The reviews for them are good and I think we can learn Science concepts and facts easily when presented in a fun and exciting way. I hope we can do this together. Write soon. Bye! Aris Practice 5 Suggested answer Hello Vishal, You must be very excited to have your pen pal visit you in your hometown. Your suggestions are good but I believe that you should take him sightseeing. Since it is his first visit here, take him to historical landmarks and popular tourist attractions. He can learn about the country’s history by visiting landmarks. He can discover the beauty and charm of your hometown when he explores famous tourist attractions. I hope my advice is useful. That’s all for now. Bye! Becky Practice 6 Suggested answer Hi Robert, Like you, I believe that we should save for the things we want to buy. I have another suggestion to help you save for the iPad. You are very good in Maths and have won prizes for being the best student in the subject. Why don’t you tutor students in Maths? I am confident you will get many students. You can teach at weekends and during holidays to earn extra money. I wish you all the best. Bye for now! Bernie We can participate in extreme activities such as white-water rafting, caving, jungle trekking and rock climbing. There’ll be instructors to guide us so we can carry out the activities safely. We don’t have to pay extra to rent the safety equipment because we only have to pay a one-time camp fee. What do you think? Bye for now! A6 A7 Practice 7 Suggested answer Hello Faizal, Camping is enjoyable but I can understand why you and your siblings want to try something new. Have you heard of a village homestay? You can suggest this idea to your father. You will stay in a village and experience the village lifestyle. You will do many outdoor activities such as fishing, farming or feeding the farm animals. You will learn to cook traditional food too. Write soon! I would like to know where you decide to go on holiday. Zizan Practice 8 Suggested answer Hi Ritika, I am happy to hear from you! The competition is held once every two years. It will probably receive many competitors. I believe you should do an experiment to stand out and also create interest among the judges and visitors. An experiment which causes smoke or a loud sound to be emitted or a liquid to bubble over will create interest. Make sure you explain what causes this to happen in clear, simple language. I hope my suggestion is helpful. Write soon! Danusha TOPIC 7 Practice 1 Suggested answer I was recently in a community play organised by the Youth Drama Society. It was a modern-day version of a popular Malaysian folktale. It was a long journey from the day I auditioned to the evening the play opened. The selection process was competitive as many talented people auditioned. I was extremely happy when I got a part in it. As the weeks of rehearsals went by, everyone in the troupe and crew grew closer. I made many new friends and listened to wonderful stories from seasoned actors. The play opened to an auditorium-full of people. It went very well and we even received a standing ovation. Due to many positive reviews, we are going to stage more shows next month. Practice 2 Suggested answer I spent the long school holidays at home. Therefore, I had a lot of time to pursue my interest of writing. I already had some ideas written in my notebook. I wrote one story and at the back of mind hoped to enter it in an online writing competition. I spent three hours daily on my story. When I finished my first draft, I reviewed it. I wrote many drafts because I wanted to craft a short that would hold my readers’ attention. I finally submitted my story after my fifth draft. I learnt that the hardest part was getting started. Most of all, I rediscovered my love for writing and I will not keep my ideas locked away in my desk drawer. Practice 3 Suggested answer My friend, Farina, is one of my best friends. I met her many years ago while cycling in my neighbourhood. Our friendship grew after that. We usually spend time at weekends. Most of the time, we listen to music, watch TV and play sports. Sometimes, we go to mall. I enjoy spending time with her because she is witty and interesting to talk to. Farina has taught me what a good friendship should look like. She is a good listener, trustworthy and supportive. We don’t have everything in common but she is willing to spend time doing what I like. When she disagrees with me, she is always respectful and explains her point of view calmly. Practice 4 Suggested answer My favourite camping trip took place during the last school holidays. A6 A7 that, I would like tickets to enter the latest theme park. My friends and I will have fun trying all the rides and activities. After a short rest at home, I will get ready for dinner. I would like to go to my favourite seafood restaurant so I can enjoy a delicious meal with my family. Practice 7 Suggested answer My hometown is Kuantan. It is located in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia. It is the capital of Pahang, the biggest state in Peninsula Malaysia. Kuantan has rainy and dry seasons. It rains continuously during the rainy season. The sea is also rough so people don’t go to the beaches. It is warm and sunny during the dry season so people head to the strip of beautiful beaches along the coast. There are many other places to visit in Kuantan and the surrounding areas. There is a fishing village, a tin mining museum, waterfalls and a water and safari park. People can buy an abundant of seafood and visit a factory producing a favourite snack among the locals called keropok lekor. Practice 8 Suggested answer I would love to live on a hill station. It is a town located on an area of land which is higher than the surrounding plains. It is usually located between 1 000 m and 2 500 m above sea level. A hill station is not crowded like the city. The pace of life is slow so I have the time to appreciate the simple things in life. I would have less stress in my life too. Even if I do experience stress, the scenic countryside and cool, fresh air will help me relax. If I live on a hill station, I will wake up to a scenic countryside daily. Nowhere else can I have streams, lush forest and waterfalls in my own backyard. my cousins. The four day, three night outing was supervised by my uncle and aunt. We pitched our tents in clear view of the waterfalls so we could enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds. To keep us busy on our trip, my uncle and aunt organised scavenger hunts and nature-based games. We went fishing, swimming, did animal spotting and birdwatching too. I enjoyed learning how to fish, build a raft and campfire, cook outdoors and navigate in the jungle. I really enjoyed the trip because it was fun and I learnt a lot of useful skills. Practice 5 Suggested answer An interesting place I visited was the Upside-down House or Rumah Terbalik. It is the first upside down house in the country. The house is in Tamparuli, Tuaran in Sabah. The house is open to visitors every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is a traditional village house. It has a living room, bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, veranda and also a garden. The whole house and everything inside including all the household appliances and decorative items are upside down. When I went inside the house, I was walking on the ceiling. It was an odd feeling standing beside the ceiling fan. At times, I felt that a piece of furniture might fall on me. It was truly an interesting place to visit. Practice 6 Suggested answer My ideal birthday present is an entire day of activities. I don’t want the usual birthday cake, gifts or cards which my family usually gives me. I would like a fun outing with my family and friends. First, I would like to have breakfast with my family at our favourite breakfast spot. It serves the best curry noodles in town which is also my favourite food. After Answers Praktis Top Eng F1.indd 7 3/15/23 10:14:43 AM CONTOH

Use the money you saved to sign-up for either a 6-month or one month subscription. The monthly subscription fee is very low so I’m sure you can afford it. There are thousands of books and magazines available so your mother can read something new every week. Bye! Hazirah [email protected] [email protected] Birthday gift Part 2 Suggested answer Last Sunday, I went to a fair to celebrate Earth Day. It was held in a large open field in Rimba Gardens. There were many booths but I spent most of my time at two booths. First, I went to the organic food booth. I watched a chef use organic ingredients to cook dishes. I tasted the food and it was delicious. After more than an hour there, I visited a Youth Nature Society. I read many posters about past and future campaigns. I was especially interested in the volunteer programme so I signed-up to be a member. After lunch, I went home. I was glad I went to the fair because I not only had fun but also learnt a lot about the environment. Answers Praktis Top Eng F1.indd 8 3/15/23 10:14:43 AM CONTOH
