There are faux vents in the rear pillars of

fitted to the ID. Buzz, including a multi-

will be an option to trim the interior in the
same two-tone palette as the exterior.

Versions of the ID. Buzz for European
markets will initially be offered with a single
electric motor driving the rear wheels -
similar to that used on other ID models
already released by Volkswagen.

synchronous electric motor is fuelled by a
77kWh lithium-ion battery that’s located in
the floor to provide a low centre of gravity.
The battery can be charged off a
household outlet, as well as AC and DC
rapid chargers, ranging from 11kW to
170kW charging power, with a DC charger
delivering 5 to 80 per cent charge in just 30

FEATURE – 1963 MERCEDES-BENZ 220S
WORDS Mike Ryan | PHOTOS Classic Motor Studio
A Teutonic Classic with an American touch, this Mercedes has a long Australian history.
20 /justcars
he late 1950s and early
1960s were interesting
times for Mercedes-
TBenz, not only generally,
but also in Australia,
leading to a major growth in the
German brand’s presence here,
including a short-lived local
assembly operation.
It could be argued that the modernisation
of Mercedes-Benz’s passenger car range
started with the W111 series, which had
been introduced in 1959 to replace the
previous W180/ W128 ‘Ponton’ series. While
aiming to improve on what had come before,
Mercedes-Benz also sought to economise
with the new W111 series.
At the time, Mercedes’s 180, 190, 220 and
300 models had a variety of wheelbases,
adding to costs and production line
complexity. The W111 series aimed to
address this, with one basic platform for
all, but differing wheelbases, depending
on whether a six-cylinder of four-cylinder
engine was fitted. Although the W111 series
was of a monocoque design, a separate
subframe for the engine, transmission and
front suspension meant differing wheelbases
were easy to accomplish.
This approach, although it undoubtedly
improved profitability and enabled better
quality control, meant that sedans, coupes
and convertibles on this platform all tended
to look similar. Four-cylinder models

the same size and weight as the the six-
cylinder cars, while those six-cylinder cars
offered no more passenger room or luggage
space than their four-cylinder equivalent.
Coupes and convertible versions of the
W111 arrived in 1961, along with a more
luxurious W112 subseries. A long wheelbase
variant of that subseries followed, essentially
undoing much of what Mercedes had tried
to achieve with the W111 series in the first
place.
Ultimately, Mercedes switched to two
distinct bodies for their sedans and large
coupes, introducing the W114 and W115
series in 1967, but not before the W111 was
replaced with the similar, but larger engined
and restyled W108/W109 in 1965.

AUSTRALIAN MADE
As mentioned earlier, Mercedes-Benz was
growing its presence in Australia in the late
1950s. Despite some residual resentment
against anything German after World War
II, the demand for Mercedes cars and
trucks was strong enough that it led to the
foundation of Mercedes-Benz Australia

usually get whatever car you
want, too, even if it’s one that
officially doesn’t exist.
One-off cars specially built for car
company CEOs and other senior auto
industry personnel are sometimes
perceived as unicorns, but they do exist
and occasionally surface for sale and at
auction. Recent examples include a Fiat 130
station wagon built for Gianni Agnelli and
a custom-trimmed Mustang convertible
for Henry Ford II to use in France when he
attended the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
Former General Motors design chief,
Harley Earl, used the famous Buick ‘Y-Job’
styling study as his personal car for years
and received a one-off Corvette convertible
in 1963, while his successor Bill Mitchell
commissioned a similarly unique Corvette
coupe a year later.
In Australia, perhaps the most famous
one-off built on a corporate whim was the
“Bill Bourke Special” XW Falcon GT that
previewed what was to come with the GT-
HO.
Other cars for the white-collar set at Ford,
Holden and Chrysler locally were heavily-
optioned or finished in colours and interior
trims unavailable to Joe Public.
Sometimes, those corporate desires for
something special went beyond loading
up the factory options or commissioning
a special colour, as evidenced by the car
featured, which was one of three specially
built for former GM-H Managing Director,
Max Wilson.
