Movie Review: The Hunger Games
A fight to the death. 24 go in, only 1 victor comes out. A boy and a girl from each of the
twelve districts between the age of 12 and 18 are chosen every year to compete in Panem’s
Hunger Games. District 12 is always overlooked until Katniss Everdeen is in the games. She is a
survivor. An illegal hunter. She does whatever she can to save her family, and now all she wants
is to be back with them. 24 go in but only 1 comes out. But what happens when 2 of those people
refuse to kill each other? Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen are the star-crossed lovers from
District 12, but they weren’t always. Katniss and Peeta get off to a rough part at the start of the
games. Death after death, cannon after cannon. On and on, lives being lost. When it only down to
a few tributes, a special announcement is made. Two people can win, as long as they are from
the same district. That’s when Katniss knows she needs to find Peeta. She had heard that earlier
he had been injured by another tribute so she tracked him down. That’s when the romance starts.
Katniss is getting signals from her mentor that she soon figured out meant more romance, more
gifts. Katniss plays along, trying to get more gifts to help them survive, but gifts can’t fix Peeta’s
wound. His cut is deep and he could die soon without medicine. That’s when the gamemakers
decide to hold a feast. In the feast, there are supplies that people need to continue. There will also
be other tributes, ready to kill. Katniss knows that Peeta’s medicine will be there. She wouldn’t
be able to live with herself if she knew she could’ve saved him.
24 go in, only 1 comes out. But what happens when 2 of them are in love?
The Hunger Games is a thrilling, action-packed movie, perfect for teens. It is personally one of
my favorite movies and I strongly recommend it!

Every summer, my mom makes my brother, sister, and I each make a lunch for the family
once a week. At first, I had no idea what to make. I thought of what food I like to eat outside of
the house, and I immediately thought of sandwiches. I knew regular sandwiches on regular bread
would be no fun, and not very tasty, so I decided to make sub sandwiches. I made a list of
ingredients that would be good on the sub sandwich, and i had my mom get everything I needed.
I made the sandwiches and some ice cold lemonade. It was a perfectly warm summer day, so we
ate on the deck and enjoyed the lunch I prepared. It was very easy to make, but I was proud. My
brother and sister both thought it was delicious! I have made sub sandwiches at least once every
summer since then. It is a very simple recipe and anyone can make it!

Dandelion

The yellow in the green
The color in the scene
Some call it a weed
But I have disagreed

It is a flower
With its bright yellow power

It pops up everywhere
And brings life into the air

Technology Essay: Netflix
Netflix is a website and an app. It is an easy way to binge watch your favorite
shows, rewatch old series, or watch movies. There are many different genres of movies and t.v.
shows. There are recent movies and shows and there are old shows that don’t play on
television anymore. It is a great source of entertainment. Netflix can be accessed on phones,
tablets, computers, and some game systems such as a wii or PS3. On Netflix, you can start,
pause, or stop watching a movie or t.v. show at any time. Netflix saves where you stop on every
show. You can easily get back to the part you were on, instead of scrolling through and trying to
find your place. You can also add your favorite shows and movies to a section called “list.” You
can easily access your list and find your shows, rather than searching through the guide on
regular television. Netflix does require internet connection to work, but there is a way to use it
without internet connection. Netflix recently added a feature where you can download shows
and movies(wiki). For example, before a long plane ride, you can download the shows you want
to watch and once they are done downloading, you can watch them without internet. To have a
Netflix account, you have to pay a monthly amount.(Netflix). You can then have multiple profiles
in that account so a family’s different shows aren’t all mixed together(Netflix App). Netflix is a
great source for entertainment and a solution to boredom.

Flying
I was flying… or at least it felt like it.
Flying high in the air with the best view.
Even strapped to the parasail, I felt free.
The small island to the side, and the ocean down below.
The fresh air was blowing through my tangled hair.

I’ll never forget the feeling.
It was scary but so exciting.
I waved to my family on the boat down below.
I never wanted to come down, but the man signaled me to get ready to land.
I went down and down until I landed.
I’ll never forget what it feels like to fly.

The Banana Boat
In Aruba, my family decided to go on a boat ride. Not just any boat ride, a banana boat ride.
The banana boat has it's name because it looks like two yellow bananas attached side to side, with a
row of seats on each banana. My sister and I were the youngest and smallest of the group, so we
were at the front. My grandpa and dad were the tallest, so they were at the back, with everyone else
in between. The banana boat was attached to a boat that pulled us along. Being in the front caused
the water to spray right in my face, but it was still fun. Then, I heard someone behind me trying to
yell to the boat driver to stop. I looked back and found out why; my grandpa had started to fall
backwards off of the boat and his head was skidding on the water! The boat driver finally got the
message to stop, and we pulled my grandpa back up. Everyone was laughing about it, including him.
We still make fun of him today.

Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
It occurs when your immune system destroys cells in your pancreas called beta
cells(Mayoclinic). Beta cells make insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that
allows the body to use sugar from carbohydrates from food for energy or to store glucose for
future use(Mayoclinic). Insulin helps keep blood sugar from getting too high or too low. Type 1
diabetes can create several complications such as heart and blood vessel diseases, nerve
damage, kidney damage, eye damage, skin conditions, osteoporosis and more(Webmd). The
exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. Genetics and environmental factors are definitely
part of the cause. It is known that type 1 diabetes can result when something in the
environment, like a virus, tells your immune system to go after your pancreas(Mayoclinic).
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased thirst, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue,
irritability, blurred vision, and yeast infections(Webmd). Right now there’s no way to prevent type
1 diabetes. The treatment for type 1 diabetes aims at maintaining normal blood sugar levels
through regular monitoring, insulin therapy, diet, and exercise. Only about 5% of people with
diabetes have type 1(Mayoclinic). All people with type 1 diabetes must use insulin injections to
control their blood sugar. This disease is more common in caucasian people than in
African-Americans (Mayoclinic). It affects men and women equally. Although the disease usually
starts in people under 20, it can happen at any age(Webmd). Type 1 diabetes can happen along
with other autoimmune diseases, like Grave's disease or vitiligo(Mayoclinic) Type 1 diabetes
can cause life complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, heart disease and stroke,
causing life to be difficult or painful. Dealing with type 1 diabetes as a child or teen can be very
stressful and possibly embarrassing, but it shouldn’t be something to hide. It should be treated
as much as possible so life can become easier. If you don’t keep your type 1 diabetes well
controlled, you could set yourself up for serious or life-threatening problems.
