Elevator Equipment Plan 3 Proper Number of Passenger and Car service

Elevators have an important role as a mode of carriage as well as determining the capacity of a building.
The scale, usage and transient population of a given building should be considered when planning an elevator.

1 Type of Elevator In general, the following is recommended.

Type of elevator ① Passenger(load) : 17(1150kg), 20(1360kg) & 24(1600kg)
Passenger elevator ② Car opening type : Center opening, Entrance width : 900~1100mm

6 Dividing Serving Floors (Zoning) ⑥ Zoning Example

For skyscrapers or super high rise buildings, it is necessary to divide a building into groups of Transfer Floor
contiguous elevator serving floors, called zones, e.g. in low, middle and high zones, in order to
provide every passenger with as equal elevator service as possible. This theoretical building division Transfer Floor
into groups of floors for elevator service is called ‘zoning’.

The zoning will bring about the following benefits :
① Carrying passengers to their destination zone as fast as possible, express zones are provided to

run express or shuttle elevators between the lobby and each zone. This will also maximize high
speed elevator performance, reduce round trip time, increase passenger handling capacity, and
reduce the required number of elevators.

② Space above the low and middle zone elevator hoistways in the building is available for use as
offices and other purposes. The elevator hall space between express elevator serving floors is also
available for use as storage. Rentable space in the building will thus be increased.

Planning Guide
Each zone is recommended to have 7-10 service floors.

7 Planning elevators in a building 8 Handling Capacity

Handling capacity is estimated by taking into account elevator speed, passengers, units,
service floors and height of floor

① It is recommended that one tenant avoid occupying floors in different zones. In a single purpose Handling Capacity for 5 min = 5 x 60 x Total No of Passengers x Units x 100
building (in which the entire space or a substantial portion of the entire space is occupied by only Average operating time x No. of Passengers
one firm), it is also recommended that the firm’s functions be arranged on the floors so as to
minimize traffic demand between zones and that restaurants and conference rooms be arranged on Market Segment Handling Capacity (%)

Office Building for Multiple Purpose 16 ~ 20
② Elevators should be arranged so that building occupants and visitors can go straight to public space 14 ~ 18
floors such as the main lobby and cafeteria/restaurant floors from all other floors. Government Building 11 ~ 15
Rental Office Building 8 ~ 10
③ The top and bottom serving floors of a zone should be overlapped with the bottom and top serving
floors of its each adjoining zone respectively as elevator transfer floors. Hotel

④ If each elevator zone has too many serving floors, the required number of elevators will increase and 9 Average Departure Terms
the zoning benefits will be ruined as a result. In general, the recommended number of serving floors
in a zone is 7 to 10.

⑤ The number of elevators planned in a zone can be roughly found to be appropriate or not by the
formula “the number of serving floors in a zone divided by the number of elevators planned” as
indicated in the table of ‘Elevator Requirement Efficiency in a Zone’ below. The recommended
number of elevator units in a zone is 8 at the maximum.

No. of Serving Floors in a Zone 2-3 Good Average operating time divided by units is equal to ‘Average departure terms’.
Elevator Requirement Efficiency in a Zone = 3-4 Acceptable These terms become the basis for measuring average waiting time. Please refer to the

10 Positioning of Grouped Elevators 11 Elevator Arrangements in a Group

Positioning of grouped elevators is as important as elevator zoning and independent elevator ◆Two-Car Groupings
position in a building. Generally, it should be placed in a way so that a walking distance for users is
minimal. In addition to the number of elevators in a group, the following should be taken into ① Side-by-side arrangement
consideration.
For a two-car group, side-by-side arrangement is best. Passengers face both cars and react
① The car inside shall allow for the turning of a wheelchair immediately to a direction lantern for an arriving car, with minimum walking distance. Two cars

be facing an elevator.
② Lobby must be open at both ends Separation of the elevators should be avoided. When the separation is great, it is hard to see which
When one end of the lobby is closed (alcove arrangement), the elevator is coming and recognize them as a group.
Planning Guideentrance of the lobby is often crowded and elevators near the end
Planning Guide are less used, reducing operating efficiency. However, ancillary
lobbies can be closed at one end because its traffic is less and
congestion is less of an issue. ② The lobby in front of the elevators should, at a minimum, be
as wide as the elevators are deep. (main floor is even wider)
③ Columns must not stick out into lobby

to see and ride the elevator.
◆Three-Car Groupings
10 _ Planning Guide
The arrangement of three cars in a row is preferable
because passengers can react immediately to a direction
lantern or arriving car.

Two cars opposite one arrangement makes walking distance
shorter, but there is very little difference in walking time with
either of the three-car arrangements, as the turn-around reaction
time offsets the shorter distance. Moreover, three-car
arrangements are more aesthetically pleasing.

The lobby width should be about one and one-half times or
1.6m minimum.

Passengers should be able to stand back far enough to see the
entrances of all three cars, which requires more depth than two-
car arrangements. With the one-opposite-two arrangement, lobby
width should be from one and one-half to two times the car
depth, or a minimum 2.4m.

Planning Guide _ 11

◆Four-Car Groupings ◆Seven or Eight-Car Groupings

Two-Opposite-Two Arrangement Three-opposite-four, or four-opposite-four arrangements provide passengers the minimum walking
distance. All cars in a row arrangement makes the distance between elevators at both ends too
This arrangement is the most efficient with the minimum walking distance. The alternative long. If the two end cars arrive simultaneously, the passengers who could not board must run to the

The preferred two-opposite-two arrangement should have a lobby from one and one-half to two The lobby width should be about two times the depth of an individual elevator and never less than

◆Five or Six-Car Groups 12 Positioning of More Than One Group

The arrangement of two-opposite-three, or three-opposite-three are preferred When elevators are zoned in two or more groups, each group must be arranged with the following

Border of groups must be distinct.
A six-car in a row arrangement makes distance between elevators at both ends too long. If the two
end cars arrive simultaneously, the passengers who could not board must run to the other end and If the border is not distinct, passengers who intend to board low-zone elevators may ride in a high-
risk missing that car also. It is also hard to realize which elevator is coming, and may miss the car zone elevator. Specifically, the following arrangements are desirable :
without realizing that it has arrived. ① Set a passage between groups.
② In case of face-to-face arrangements, have a wider lobby.
The lobby width should be from one and three-fourths to two times the depth of an individual ③ Arrange distinct face-to-face groups next to each other in the fashion of drawing below.

passengers, its width should be no less than 3.6m.
